Unfortunately most docs don't care; they don't even read the reports most of the time.

Posted By: sm on 2007-02-06
In Reply to: No, as I said both times same context but qa'ed differently. - I doubt the docs care one way or other, either. n

It's OUR job to comply with quality standards.

Yer right... half the time the docs dont even read the reports. (nm)
.
If they don't read their reports how do they know what's wrong with patient next time he sees

The MR reports were being filed. Referring physicians/medical care providers reports were not.
This is a hospital radiology department with in-house MTs and a clerk who is in charge of the report distribution.
I have been printing my docs reports for six years - sm
I charge $4.50 per page for the original letters. I do not charge for copies because I am averaging about $120 for 30-60 minutes of work for each tape. If I started charging the copies with that, I would be making about $250-300 for 30-60 minutes of work, and my docs just will not pay that kind of money for transcription work that takes 1 hour of my time to do.

Now - trying to find someone to cover for me while I'm on vacation is a nightmare because NO ONE WANTS TO PRINT THE LETTERS. Go figure. How hard is it to print letters. The docs provide all the paper and envelopes and blank paper. I pay about $32/month for ink. But if I'm being paid $600-800/month for my transcription, $32 is practically nothing - a business expense.
IC Question: How long do you keep your reports for your docs?

ICs, I was curious to see how long do you keep your reports on your computer for the doctors?  Is there a usual time limit?

Thank you!

Let the docs use their reports transcribed in India as a defense! LOL
The doc can sit there while the personal injury lawyer shows the jury a grieving family and the messed up report.
US MTs should not accept sweat shop wages or conditions. We are providing a service to them! We are their first defense!:) :) :)
If US MTs stoped working for low wages, the physicians who value patient safety and their livelihood would pay a descent wage. The other ones can try to explain the report being done in India to the personal injury lawyer tearing him apart.

Most of these docs realize it and the sad thing is that most do not care --
nm
these are the docs that I don't think care about their patients. my opinion. nm

I think ASR may be able to read docs' minds!

ASR:  He will return to see us in 3 weeks unless he has no sense.

Actually dictated:  He will return to see us in 3 weeks unless he has any problems.

I think the ASR read my doctor's mind!  I would be good money that's what he was thinking!

Acute care vs. Clinic reports-

Being new to MT full time and coming from a hospital setting (specialty clinics) for most of my career.....How does acute care transcription differ from "speciality"clinics (i.e. ortho, GI, oncology, etc.) when applying for jobs?   Acute care is the same as emergency medicine right?

Aside from the differing terms, doesn't the basics of format apply to all H&Ps, clinic notes, etc. when transcribing notes regardless of specialty?  Therefore, even if you have mostly specialty 'experience' wouldn't you still be qualified to do acute care?  Just wondering....

Yes, 25 yrs exp in all acute care, including Op Reports, and no response. sm
Personally, I think the companies just get so many resumes and have to weed through them. First come first serve is probably how they handle it. So, my suggestion would be, if you are seriously looking, be one of the first ones to send you resume as soon as the jobs post. Maybe that will help.

To be honest, I have been applying to ads that are a few days to a week old. I think that is probably the key to no response.

I thought so.  Thanks!
sorry, supposed to read these docs need to know simple things like not talking with food in their mo

I read my reports before sending
I read my reports word-for-word before sending (not my posts though! LOL). I started off a little slow at first, but like anything, once I got used to the account my speed increased. Nothing was ever said to me about my counts (which were slightly below the requirement). When I mentioned it to my supervisors just to cover my behind, they told me that they much preferred my 99-100% accuracy on QA checks. I would never put my name on a report without making sure that it was as accurate as possible. These are patient's lives here. If I could not produce accurate reports fairly quickly, I would get out of this business. For me, accuracy comes first and speed second.
Who had time to read?LOL I only get a chance to read This Old House once in a while. (nm)

Docs have the right to document their time
as much as anyone else -- for insurance purposes and any other reason they want.
My docs seem to take vacation time...sm

every other week.  I have never seen doctors take off so much as these docs I type for.  I work for a national and assigned my own docs and these two are always taking weeks off.  I so need another part time job but do not want to waste my time on a horrid account where I will NOT make any money.

please read if you care about animals....

A friend of mine gave me a video about 4 years ago about factory farming and the fur trade and where our meat supply comes from. Please to to Farm Sanctuary on the web for videos, books, more info. But that video turned me into a vegetarian that moment! I have always loved animals, but some reason never made the connection. They feel pain like we do. They are thinking beings as well and know when they are going to slaughter. Each vegetarian saves 80 ANIMALS A YEAR. It is appalling the way these animals are treated not to mention the chemicals and food they are fattened up with during their short lives... this is going into YOUR food chain. Sorry to get on my soap box... but I feel very passionately about this cause. If you are interested, please  research it further. The videos are extremely hard to watch, but that's the point --- it wakes you up! Harm no thing. Thanks for reading. Please don't bother blasting me if you disagree. It is my opinion. It will not change. You do not have to agree.

Acute care work is operative reports, consultations, H&Ps, emergency room, DS basically the type of
dictation found in a hospital setting as opposed to a clinic setting in which you just type office notes and minor procedures.
do you care? why? i don't want to read one extra e-mail from MQ i don't have to. EVER.
and the revolving door of supervisors, managers, CEOs makes me even more adamant against introductory e-mails or more propaganda from the latest CEO/manager/director/supervisor
Its so amazing to me to read your huge post defending day care!
All the positives you post are "family", "family", "family". Its just like family, everyone is so close its just like family, etc. EXACTLY - its your kids real family, cause that's who they are with for the most part, that's who they are BONDING with. The day care is THEIR FAMILY, and you could be the family.  The only family, cause you apparently work at home! You just don't get it! So, you put them in day care, and feel so relieved because its a "good" day care, cause its JUST LIKE FAMILY!!  Its so ironic that you can't see the travesty of your own words.  Well, at least their DAY CARE family wants them:  1. the adults sure do, cause you're paying them $$ to be "family", and 2. the peer group (other kids) sure want them, cause their "real" family has stuck them in day care, too!!  I just so wish that some of you would realize the logic of NOT sticking your kids in day care when you COULD have them home with you. Its so sad.
The last time I did reports per page...
was about 3 to 4 years ago, and I was getting $2.50 per page then.  I did about 10 pages an hour, so I was making $25 an hour.
I shouldn't have RETYPE the reports all the time because the MT
doesn't do their job. They don't read over their work. They add and leave out words. They misspell words as if they don't have any spellchecker whatsoever. They completely SKIP dictations in the middle of a 30 min tape. NO IT IS NOT MY JOB TO TYPE IT. IT IS MY JOB TO EDIT IT. I would rather spend my day EDITING because I am an editor.
Find my reports changed all the time.
In ChartScript you can view and edit previous reports.   Anyway, I have found tons of my work which I know is not the way I typed it.   I just let it go and so far have they have not said anything.  If, however, I was told about these mistakes I would say something even though I know QA would be right.  Agree, they think they know it all and some really don't know jack.
Long reports, dead air time

Does anyone have any good tricks for dealing with the long reports with huge segments of "nothing"?  On top of that, the people I am dealing with are ESLs so that's slowing me down enough already.

At this point, all I do is speed up and fast forward but am wondering if there are other ways to compensate for this issue.

Seems like someone would teach them how to pause when they stop dictating!

Do the majority of MTs reread or relisten to all the reports you do and how much time does this take
or I suppose rather which is more effective and takes less time. Do you do this for every report you do. Do the big nationals require this. I suppose it depends on your QA score if you need to do this.
well, it IS work related. I edit those reports all the time.
nm
One more time - THEY DON'T CARE!

whatever else - this isn't rocket science. I can't believe the level of self-importance of some people. It's really amazing!

I do reports all the time where patients have asthma, COPD, emphysema, and

even cancer and continue to smoke.  In our local paper they are following a woman in her battle with cancer.  She continues to smoke, as does her husband.  They were broke before the cancer diagnosis, having to borrow daughter's babysitting money to pay bills.  Just think how much money they've blown on cigarettes.

I've even known one man with a trach who smoked through his trach.

LOVE teaching hospitals and long-winded reports. Less ADT time which I'm not paid for.
Hate filling in ADT screens w/ searches just to do a one minute report.
You can't take care of an infant all day and work full time.

if u have time to read this
you have time to stop in and say hello. take 5 minutes, you might meet a new friend.
Don't have time to read
it right now, but people have a horror of so-called socialized medicine even though we already have it in the VA system. And from all accounts it works well.

It's okay to provide our reps in government with the best health care but feel that we don't deserve it?

Strange that "socialized" is such a scary word for so many. We have a socalized fire department and police department. They don't check for coverage to help you do they?

We are the only industrial country in the world that does not provide health care to all of its ciitzens, It is something of which this country should be ashamed.
And all this time I thought the bottom line was patient care. nm

Just experiencing acute care dictation, for the first time in years
the dictation seems lacking of a change in the tone of the dictation, inflections put on syllabyls or sentence structure are both missing. It makes the job boring with the sighs and "ummmm"s of which there are many, loss of train of thought. In my day, the doctor's dictated with some emotion which helped to enjoy the job even more, in fact, that is my fav part, typing a good job for the person dictating - that has always been my goal. It is very depressing since I see another 10 or so years in this field unless I sprout a new talent that can pay the bills.
You cannot believe what you read all the time on these boards.
Best to ask the company if you have a question.
How sad. I read one time in Ann Landers, I think it was

Rather than ask them if they need anything, just do something, like bring food over (not right away, they will have enough) but maybe every week or so for several months, not on a regular basis, more "spontaneously."  Volunteer to sit with their other children if they have any, so that they can do whatever.   Things like that.  Just so they know you are there for them.

Who has time to read books?

I'm too busy trying to juggle 3 jobs, and spending time reading a book has become a luxury I just can't afford.  Can really relate to the OP.

I keep hearing how great the economy is, and I'm starting to wonder if that's simply just not true.

I'm like this all of the time! And now that I've read this
and became aware of my chair position, I have to adjust again!  I think it's just one of those little MT quirks we all have.
Please take some time to read up on the subject and....
...we can bring the discussion back up to a higher level. It's hard to discuss when the basic fund of knowledge isn't shared by all involved.
Does anyone actually take the time to read the posts BEFORE replying?
been "mentoring" with them for 9-months.....so Yes, she has already been taken for the $$$, and obviously being shot down saying she is not quite good enough yet to "work" for them. ---Ever now and then someone will come on and say they "work" for them and how great they are, but its a bunch of bunk, look at the archives, 99% negative, total scam all the way. Sorry you got taken.
You have not taken the time to carefully read the posts then
Don't come into the middle of something and start accusing the wrong people of stirring up trouble.  I think you need to take a chill and read the posts below.  If you take the time and stop looking at it with a prejudiced eye, you will also be able to see the thread.  You are defending the wrong person here.
EVERYONE SHOULD TAKE THE TIME TO READ THE POST ABOVE FROM RutgersFanMT.
This is an example of how at least one company manipulates both the Transcriptionist and their own clients to their detriment and to the company's gain. And it is all true.
I was going to say to trust yourself and not re-read everything you type, but within the time
it took me to read your post and then go check my mail, I received my monthly QA report and had two errors where I didn't pay attention and put "female" instead of "male".  Talk about feeling like a complete airhead!  Just goes to show you that you're going to make dumb mistakes no matter how long you've been at this or how much you trust yourself.
Read this all the time here, simple solution
why gripe and get all hung up on something that is the way it is and apparently the people complaining do not see any change, disappointed with their lives, money, children, whatever. Life is much too short to just sit back and complain. I have free speech, it is guaranteed and I will use it. I have never in my life seen so much "woe is me" type posters. People find it much easier to sit on their duff and complain about what they perceive their lives to be rather than trying to rectify the situation.
I've never seen mixed acute care & clinic at the same time. That's a production killer for sur

Best post I've read in a long time.
I tend to go back and forth with my feelings about this profession. In the mornings I am glad I do not have to get up, get ready and go to an office. Many times in the evening, after I have during the day and still have work to do, I feel like stuffing it all. Many times I am disheartened when I get my paycheck, but I am glad to be getting one, while my sister worries about getting laid off from her manufacturing job. MT has advantages and disadvantages.
I haven't read any of the other replies regarding Time Warner
so forgive me if this was already noted. I have the all in one package phone, internet and cable and haven't heard anything about this at all. Nothing's been in our paper or on the news. I guess I'll just have to wait and see and worry about it then.
I work and do not have time to read such long posts, do you?..nm
