How long should it take to type a 36 minute dictated report?
I was just wondering as I talked to a woman that said it took her a really long time to type this report the other day.. I have never actually timed myself, but thought I'd see what you all thought or what it really should take to do a report that length?
Sweet! A report with a long normal in place! Finally!

OK, that was unfair of me to say.
Maybe it was just sour grapes or mother guilt on my part.  The first 10 years of my marriage were pretty tough.  I did not have a choice but to work and put my kid in daycare.  We agreed before we got married that I would be a stay at home Mom and not use daycare.  Life's plans don't always work out, though.  We had a lot, and I mean A LOT, of setbacks.  Life could have been worse, but it was dark for a long time.  Every time I thought we were crawling out of the muck, life would stomp me on the head and force me back down again.  It was always something.  Layoffs, company closings, car accidents with uninsured drivers (their fault), hit & run, injuries, medical bills.  The old daycare argument will never die, but it's not fair to judge people who need or want to use daycare.  We could be like other societies that use nannies and ship their kids off to boarding schools all year.  Using daycare has its pros and cons.
unfair .
Hello!
What's up with this warning and banned from visiting the website etc.. I am currently in US and have no idea as to why the administrator sent me a message saying I am banned from visiting the site.
Is this how professionals are treated for visiting the website and spending a lot of time reading their website.
Well I would rather look jobs somewhere where one is respected and qualifications valued than for MTStars.com
I am really upset with the mail they have sent to me.
I know it seems unfair, it really does.
The FASFA serves many purposes and so it cannot take those things into consideration.

That is where developing a good relationship with your FA advisor comes in. Your school can qualify you for other grants, scholarships, loans, and work-study programs.

that all seems so unfair
there has to be a way that can monitor a transcriptionist's workload. they should not be paid for eight hours if it is only taking them 6. they should be rewarded only if they go above their line count. when i went home to work, my benefits stopped. they stopped taking taxes out as well.
wow, how unfair!
For some of us it is an excellent choice. After 30 years I still like what I do. That to me is an excellent choice! Plus I managed to earn enough to put my kids through college without loans and pay for weddings without any help on top of it. So if you made a bad choice, change it, but don't make such a negative blanket statement. Don't make your problem someone else's.
Just as you probably feel that it's unfair...
to put someone  down for choosing to homeschool, it's also rather unfair to say that your parents "didn't care enough" to homeschool you. Maybe that wasn't in vogue when you were in school, or maybe they wouldn't have  had what it takes to do that.  Most people are not  capable of teaching THEMSELVES all the subjects taken in high school.  Even high school teachers major in ONE area and are not even credentialed, qualified, or allow to teach outside their earned credential.  It's rather bold of some parent,  in my opinion, to think they can adequately educate their older children themselves.
definitely UNFAIR. You are our 2nd set of ears and still MTs. NM
.
It was unfair of me to have lumped all
pain management specialists into a group of uncaring physicians, and I apologize, but I see stories like the OP all the time. I have done dictations concerning people who have become addicted by physicians prescribing whatever for whatever reason and then when the patient complains of addiction, the docs just dump them "permanent and stationary" and the patient is on their own. Some docs even make desparaging comments about the addicted individual in their dictations. They don't try to help. It is discouraging, to sat the least, and throws a bad light on all doctors then. But again, if your doctor is compassionate, maybe he should consult with the above OP, if within the area, which is a long shot, but a thought. She needs help, and not just Valium. Again, I apologize if I offended anyone.
You guys are mean, mean and unfair
Honestly, hopefully you two never make any mistakes because if you do you will have quite a ways to fall off of your pedestal.  Everybody has trouble the first day, I hate first days and even the first week.  But if they can't take the time to help out of the first day and point out where the errors were -- even if it was terminology or usage or whatever -- they are not worth working for.   Believe me it would have only gotten worse as the time goes by.  If they cannot give you help on your first day imagine what it would be like on the 5th, 10th or 25th or if after a month you made a mistake.  But to prejudge like you two have, like I said you have sure put yourself on a pretty high pedestal.   I agree a reason should be given because you can never correct a mistake unless you know you have made one and if I have made a typo during this message - forgive me but I am a little upset with the above two posters.
Unfair! WHY OH WHY will someone from AAMT or whatever they are now
PLEASE explain to we suffering and underpaid, unappreciated MTs WHY they are in India's back pocket and why they have abandoned us.  It used to be an association for US now it seems it's more for scummy foreigners.  So unfair.
This is totally unfair. sm.
I too have been saving and studying hard to take this test but now I don't feel that it means anything. You don't have to be CMT certified to find an MT job but HELLO. AMERICAN Association for Medical Transcriptionists.
THEFT? That's going a bit far and is unfair..sm

While I agree that cherry-picking is not fair, either, I wouldn't go as far as to call it "theft".  The MT is doing the same work, a day's or line's pay for a day's (or line's) pay.  If you were to go to a store sale, and someone else were to pick out the most desirable items first, would you also call that stealing?

More importantly, I would not blame your fellow MT.  (They are trying to put food on the table the same as everyone else.)  I would blame the crappy, thoughtless dictators, and those who have made outsourcing possible, thus leaving all the crap work for us "cherry-picking" MTs.

Exactly! It's just inconsiderate to your neighbors and unfair to do something like that!
People think they're being funny or cute but making your house look like a piece of crap is rude to the neighbors and DOES make their homes worth less than they should be. I agree that they should be forced by law to change it back.
This "list" you speak of is really unfair though (sm)
There are always two sides to any story. And, I'm sure I'm not the only one who has been through this in one way or another but....

I've been an MT for 18 years now. About 10 years ago my life was a mess and I was dealing with some substance abuse issues (alcohol). I was never fired from any job because I always quit before it came to that, but I did burn many bridges in the local area. The quality of my work was never called into question, it was always attendance issues.

I'm just saying some people do grow up and change. I did. But I understand weeding out good MTs from not so good ones isn't necessarily an easy job either.
Unfair labor practices
I'm an independent contractor and the company I work for is offering bonuses to some ICs, but not all.  I know I could choose not work for them, but this is a pretty shady practice.  I'm also routinely shorted on my pay, though they make it up the next month. I would like to do something about it if possible.  Has anyone ever filed a complaint with EEO or Labor Relations for something like this?  Thanks.
downright crappy and unfair!!! SM

MQ paid 30% less pay for ASR reports, and they took just as long to edit as they did to type sometimes, so was very frustrating.  I have heard some companies pay straight line rate difference, i.e. if you make 7 cpl typing, you'll make 4 cpl for ASR.  It is totally unfair, as like I said, it does take quite some time to edit ASR, some more/less than others.  Needless to say, I left MQ for KS, who does NOT do ASR!!!!

Unfair Workload Assignment
When looking at the workload assignment especially on weekends, I find it very unfair that people with exclusive privileges and trainees get to take all the good work when I have to do all the difficult dictations and ESLs before getting to do any good stuff. Work is always supposed to be taken according to date order (which is clearly not the case). I am so mad right now, I am literally screaming!
You do not need the 1099. You just need to report the income. Report the company/person ...sm
to the IRS for not sending out the 1099.
Just goes to show if true how UNFAIR MQ is. Those who have been with MQ for years..
MQ SUCKS!
That's unfair. Everyone has a B-Day, but Mother's Day is made up. Ditto for Valentine's Day
x
I charge the same amount for a "normal" report as for any other report.
You still have to listen to the dictation and change anything that's different.  I had one woman try to pull this on me.  She'd dictate, "Just pull up my normal, but change this, change that, switch that around, move that, add this, delete that, and change the other."  Then she'd only want to pay me what equated to $.03 per line.  She wanted 1:1 on her dictation to transcription ratios.  I told her to take her cheap account down the road because I'm worth more than that.
Oh, a report just came in. A report actually just slid in, can you believe it. Hip Hip Hooray. I

had better get that sucker typed before it gets out of ONE MINUTE TAT.

If you are careful with putting the correct report in the correct report shell and patient, you will
not have any problems. I only take away this option when someone is careless. There can be NO room for error on this. One mistake can be very serious. Many do it well though, so just double check and you will be fine.

I hate Instant Text. It is expensive, long long learning
curve, and too much distraction for me.
How long should I wait after applying for a position before I follow-up. It has been as long as two
without hearing from some.  Just wondering if I should send an e-mail to follow-up to see if they received my resume or not.  I don't want to offend anyone but feel two weeks should be long enough for someone to at least acknowledge my resume and that I have applied for a position.  Right now I would accept anything even a note saying no thanks.  Any advice would be appreciated.  I haven't had to apply for a job for the past 10 years so I am a bit rusty at this.  Thanks again for any advice.
I would move on. I think it is so unfair not to be paid for spaces! I think we should get paid

per keystroke, but that'll never happen.  I just think that these national companies are going to keep finding ways to cheat us.  I found a job working for a hospital as an employee, paid hourly plus incentive, and they let us expand everything!  Somebody's gonna have to kill me to make me give up this job.  I will never go back to the national's again.

I feel for you though.  I know that for us MTs those good jobs are few and far between and some have little choice but to work for the nationals.  I just happened to luck into the job I have now.  I just applied at the right time.

Good luck to you whatever you decide.

Congrats! How long have you been a MLS and how long did you study for the test!

Please see message. I have three daughters with long, long hair.
I also have long hair down to my waist and my three girls have hair that long too. My daughter brought them home from school last year. I was devestated and grossed out!!!! I have never had to deal with lice. Anyway, we did the treatments and two of my girls broke out in a severe rash with the OTC stuff. Their little heads were so sore!! I thought I was being meticulous with eggs, only to find them hatching again down the road. A nurse at the pediatricians office suggested I try oil to suffocate them since my girls were allergic to the lice solution. I bought a huge bottle of veggie oil and dumped it on all three heads, plus my own. I then wrapped the heads in platic wrap and then a towel. I left this on for 30 minutes. It takes a while to wash out the oil, but we never, ever had the lice or eggs again!!! If you try this, make sure you put on an old shirt and put a towel around your shoulders. Obviously we were desperate, but we all have such long hair and very thick hair so I was willing to try anything. And I figured there was no chemicals involved so that was pretty safe. And it sure did help my littles ones since their scalps were pretty raw from the solution. Hope this helps and Good luck!
It's been a long, long time since I've used a C-phone, sm
but I do think jobs can be paused.
I had a problem with this for a long, long time sm
I have always worked days, like from 6-3. Over the last few years, it didn't matter how much sleep I got, I became real groggy between 7 and 11. Really shoots the day. Talked to my doctor and he said my blood pressure pills were the culprit but he refused to change me to another brand or dosage since I have multiple aneurysms (2 in the brain). My BP has been stable for a long time and he wants to "keep it on the low side". I tried taking them before I went to bed instead of early in the morning, but then I had headaches all day. So, I am changing to a night shift for a few months so I can sleep when those pills kick in and so far it is working pretty good. I stay mostly awake during my shift and die when I hit the bed from 6 am to 10 am, then I lay down again later in the afternoon for 2-3 hours. I still get 6-7 hours of sleep, it's just split up during the day, plus I am mostly awake now when I sit down to type. I don't have to deal with the heat in my office, either. It tends to warm up real fast in here with the south sun on the house and 2 pc's running all day, even with the air conditioner on.
Way back when, a long, long time
ago and in a galaxy far, far away, I had my own accounts also and some years cleared $75,000.  Yes it can be done, but you need to have your own accounts.  Also lots of delivery, and other duties involved.  I work for a large national now and make much less, but I got tired of accountants, having to deal with hardware problems, deadlines, driving deliveries, printing, printers, etc.  So I decided to simplify my taxes and stay home and just type.  Don't have to worry about computers either, because the company will just send me a new one.
Long, long files. Seemed like they'd never end! I'd never go back to VA again. nm

I've been doing this a long, long time...

I used to make $70,000 and up a year and did so for most of the late 80s and 90s (one girl used to make six figures a year working 7 days a week!)  Because we were making more money than the supervisors and Medical Records Directors in hospitals, they began to switch to transcription services which were sprouting up all over the place.  Plus AAMT came into existence and even though in the beginning it claimed it was to fight for transcriptionists (although assured us it was NOT a union), they eventually morphed into an organization that was more management friendly.  They developed the "guidelines" and the 65-char line.  That was the beginning of the end for those high-end wages.  Then all those mickey mouse transcription schools popped up, and now outsourcing overseas.  YES, we're complaining.

Been in this biz a long, long time, 30+ years and....sm
I love/loved MTing. However, things have changed so much during these years. The job definitely gets easier; don't have to look up much, can decipher ESLs much easier, in other words, you get pretty comfortable with things and you have confidence in yourself. The more experience you have the easier the job, but....

I actually made more money 10 years ago!! We didn't have speech recognition and you actually got paid for headers/footers, demographics, carbon copies, etc., you got paid for what you did fairly; today, I am not so sure.

You will feel burned out at times, but that passes and you find you like your job again.

Good luck to you!!
A long, long time ago, I was going thru
a really bad time emotionally and physically. I was suffering, and my transcribing suffered. I assure you - if you are to the point of not paying your rent, literally, and needing food stamps, there is something else going on in your life than current transcription rates. We are all in this industry and many are thriving, most getting along comfortably. If you are literally to the point of food stamps, you honestly would be a fool to continue. I blamed it on my job, on my line rate, on everything but the honest truth that I was ill and was NOT working as I should or could. It is a really sad thing that you keep spreading this propaganda that MTs in our culture are doomed and now destined for food stamps. Food stamps are not something to toss around lightly, as you would know if you ever had to use them. Please let's not be quite so dramatic. Again, if you are really in those dire straits, you really need to face that MTing is not the fit for you, personally, and do something about it rather than blame our industry. You dwell on the past, but we can't do that. While you may have made other wages 20 years ago, may I remind you that we were pounding away on IBM Selectrics using layers of paper and bottles of white out, going crazy trying to rewind tapes over and over to get that dang word, with no idea what an Expander was. Technology is fantastic. Things have changed, but things are still great in this industry, and in this world. Those who change and can adapt will be fine, but you need to recognize that most of us are not ready for food stamps.
Sure did...you been around for a long, long year

Yes...Every Report
I have to admit, I proofread EVERY SINGLE REPORT. But I always have gone for overkill, and I am new. My one and only QA score was 98%. While I am proofreading (long reports), I sometimes stand up and stretch, or run and grab a snack or lunch so I don't feel like it is so much a waste of time. I suppose I will have to get to the point where I don't proofread every report, or I will never make any money! I may have to rethink my strategy if and when MQ increases their line quota for part time employees. Rumor has it at 8,000 lines per pay period, and I am only managing 6,000 and working long hours just to do that. Got to figure SOME way to speed up!
report
I get paid per report, $1.30, includes all accessions/requisitions -
for instance in one report if doc says this is an MRI of the Head, neck and 3d multiplanar I get 1.3 for each. I use Shorthand and I have eight years experience. I do anywhere from 80-120 reports a day.
There was a report in AL, I think, that there was

a live alligator swimming around the flood waters there in one area. The newscaster kept saying it was live and nobody would come out and was avoiding that area until it disappeared. It's probably waiting somewhere quietly for its next dinner to walk by.

Two of my accounts are in New Orleans and I have typed hundreds of patients with abscesses that tested positive for MRSA over the last few months. The way the city is now cannot be helping this at all. A few of the docs I do are automatically  treating for MRSA now w/o getting the culture report just because they've seen so many cases.

right! Fox would report a

That would be real news there.

No, the woman bought a LOUIS VUITTON with the money she got

(debit card).

ONE report probably
so they will need to add more MT's...LOL! I feel for all of you.
Per Report
The highest I have heard of anyone paying per report is $2 with most paying less than that. Hope that helps.
Pay by report?

Hi, all:  I've been getting my own small clients here and there, and I've had a request for a proposal to radiology reports for a small radiology group.  Their current vendor is charging them by report, not line.  Anyone have any idea what to charge by report?  I've done some calculating with regard to average lines per report, and I'm thinking of offering to do it for $3 per report.  Any idea if this is too high or too low???  Any input is appreciated........

Per report

Working as an IC you should be charging $2 per report, that is what I charge my clients.  Good Luck!!!

I saw a report that said . . .
Heart rate 80 permanent. Do ya think he said per minute?
Report changes
Has anyone ever had someone go in and change your reports?  I don't mean change a small word or the wording of a sentence.  I am talking about taking out information and putting in information that the doctor did not dictate, making the report incorrect for the patient's records?  I found this happening to my work and need information on the legal ramifications, as well as how to handle this.
report changes

I work at home for a service, but not as an IC.  I found work changed by having a temporary copy on file - then the QA changes/corrections - and then relistened and found changes made that affected the whole report, different medications, different procedures and PMH, etc.  Information that will probably one day go on to another physician that is incorrect and that I did not transcribe, but with my initials on the report.  Of course, I realize that once the physician signs it that the liability is on him, but it's just inconceivable that someone would do this.  I saw this happen one other time when I worked in house and one Transcriptionist didn't like another one and this was done in order to try and get the disliked employee fired.  However, it did not involve my work then.  I keep thinking that MTs all think ethically and with a legal obligation to the patient, but I know in reality that to some it is just a job.  I am tetering on talking to the company and/or the account manager, especially since I have everything in black and white - the first report - the QA corrections - the changes to the report after it came back to me, etc.  I'm just looking for some guidance on how to handle the situation.
