earning ENOUGH as an IC

Hello all ... I'm considering leaving my hospital job to work from home f/t.  But if i work for a national, as an IC, it seems I'll be luck to make $20 an hour.  I'd have to work like a dog, all day long, to earn $150 bucks.   And of course that has no benefits in that wage !

My ques is - how do you guys who work f/t from home for transcription services - do it ?  How do you make enough $$ to pay all the bills, and then some?  do you work p/t and do this as a supplement ?

It just seems it will be very, very hard to make what I earn now at the hospital.  Thanks! JoJo - New Jersey

earning enough
You won't earn enough - look at these boards and see how many people can't pay their bills and how many people have left MT.

Stay at the hospital! I just recently - 3 weeks ago - went back to a hospital job after 10 years as an IC and/or MTSO employee. There is no comparison between the two.

ALso, the trend now is for hospitals to start hiring their own MTs, at least for part of the work. They are reversing the outsourcing trend that started back in the 1980s.

I think you'll be sorry if you leave your hospital job.
CMT/earning potential
50, 52K?  That sounds great to me---as someone who doesn't transcribe anymore, am thinking I'm in the wrong end of the biz.  I have two hourly jobs, one FT and one PT as QA/editor from home and making 54.  Would much rather work one job...hmmm...I would certainly go back to transcription w/the right employer and the only obstacle to my earning potential being myself.  More info on types of companies you work for...??
How about earning via writing

See link below titled "Sample page." Sign up for free and start writing and earning. Read the FAQ on that site to learn about how. Also, visit the forums section and see how others are earning just expressing their thoughts, writing on topics they like.

If they make it that difficult to figure out what you are earning, then I would tell them NO.
These companies that cannot seem to want you to know what you are earning are hiding something. Say no. If they can figure out how to use a 65-character line with spaces, tell them to call you.
Too, the MTSO is not earning extra from the client
The gains come from their paying out less to QA.
Not talking taxes but fact you will be earning

Of course it's a business! Anything that's run for the purpose of earning a profit is a busine

What galaxy are you on?

Great. Now more will flock to CS in hopes of earning $40,000+ a year.
http://www.careerstep.com/blog/?p=31

Why do they keep perpetuating this myth of making this kind of money with MT? New grads of CS are getting offers of 4-6 cpl for straight transcription and 1-3 cpl for VR. There is no way anyone is making $32 an hour at those rates.
I've never come close to earning $20 in years of doing this. Troubles with every company, usually

Longevity as an MT doesn't mean a higher wage. Lots of us out here still earning less

This is a good one compared to what I get
I get all the ESLs who can't speak English and the words are just garbage words strung together and they make absolutely no sense at all. Words appear that are not even spoken and when they are, they are not there. I would rather just delete the whole thing and type it myself. However, they have a limit on how many times a month you can do this and if you go over, you are in trouble. I think this is just a way to get our pay even lower than it was so that we match up with the Indians. I could type the whole report in less than half the time and do it correctly instead of dealing with this garbage that takes me twice as long-- for less than half the pay, of course.
I also am not a "computer whiz" and all these commands with "control shift this and control shift that" and jumping all over the keyboard drives me crazy. I would rather just type the whole report myself. I am very fast and could do it much quicker on my own.

I really used to enjoy transcription but it has turned into a dead profession and I don't see it getting any better any time soon.
Fantasia was fabulous compared to others...nm

Wow, I'm getting a huge break compared to others...sm
Through Cincinnati Bell, I have to have their broadband, which is also the ISP.  As part of the bundle, I get Complete Connections which includes call waiting, caller ID, call block, etc.  This whole package comes to around $44 and gives you 200 minutes of long distance.  I recently asked to have unlimited added to my phone line, but it automatically goes on both lines.  The additional charge for unlimited is $10.  So I basically pay $10 for unlimited!
Used to, but compared electric bills
I used to never turn my computer off. Then my grandchildren visited me for 3 wks. Because I did not want them playing on my computer (they had their own laptop), I kept mine off when I was not working. When the electric bill came it, it was almost $60 less, so from that point on, I began turning it off between the hours of 5 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. plus my days off (and I get more done around the house as well) -- continued with the same savings. Figured I can buy a new tower for $720 a year in savings.
compared to what most places offer
This is very good. I would just clarify that time isn't rounded down to the nearest minute on each dictation. This is a good rate even if ESL as long as it is not one of those impossible-to-hear people. :)
I have a life and compared to my years in this
you are a newbie. First of all, people are not making the same money you made 20 years ago- most are making LESS. I have almost 40 years doing this type of work so no one can tell me about what they used to make. If you feel slighted, unloved, uncared for, as you say working your tail off, depressed, stressed, why in the world do you continue in such a dead-end job? A single mom to me means nothing more than 1 person working. If they need to make more money to live, maybe they should get another job as I did years ago when I was a divorced mother.
Very nice features, compared and love it.

I lost money doing VR compared to straight
Before VR my line count was about 375 to 400 lph.  After VR, my lines were about 400 to 450 lph.  The lines produced went up slightly, but the rate in pay was decreased by 40% and the platform was so bad it took me longer to produce the 400 to 450 lines than it did straight typing.  Total loss of income was about 38% to 40% working 8 hours a day instead of 7 to 7-1/2.
That is great! My best so far is about 1600 but I am a snail compared to most - nm

WE ARE RICH compared to REAL third world nations
like those hit in the tsunami.  Do you live with three generations in a dirt floor hut?  Are you a farmer, fisherman, or hard laborer?  Do our people have malnutrition and low fetal birth weights?  Do you worry about where your next meal is coming from?  No, we're the fattest nation in the world.  We have a lot to be grateful for but people still want more.  You can sit there behind your computer screen in your heated house while drinking lemonade and tell us all how poor you are, but I don't believe it for a minute.  Your life could be a lot worse.
It'll be tough with so many new drugs, etc. out there. Figure out what you used to do compared to
,
Yes. It's expensive compared to a single visit for electrolysis but
I have found it very effective. For me it is more painful than electrolysis, but the visits are over much more quickly (takes me about 5 minutes for upper lip, chin, and cheeks). Because hair must be within the growth stage to work, it takes at least 3 visits to finish, spaced about 6 weeks apart, and you can't tweeze, depilate, or bleach while you are having it done. That includes for a few weeks before you start, or the first visit will be a waste. You can shave, which sounds odd to most people, but works just fine during the process. (You will be shaved before the treatments anyway, because the hair melts onto the skin otherwise.) No matter what the ads say, it does still work best on darker hair and light skin, because the melanin affects how the laser works. Another thing you won't hear about before hand is when used over areas of dental work there is an additional zing of discomfort. I put my tongue over the teeth in those areas, which helps some. My technician stopped providing anesthetic cream because of possible allergic reactions, but you can order it over the counter at a drug store or online. I have just toughed it out each time. My face is red for a few hours after treatment, but no burning. There will be a few strays, which they will handle as needed at a lower rate after the agreed upon series of treatments.
Celine, although excellent, will always be a pretender to the throne compared to Ms Streisand. :) nm

The animals need to be hunted or they would overpopulate areas. It has to be done.

Ummm, sorry
This is the main board where everyting but MT related topics are discussed (haven't you noticed?). Good luck on getting a response. Try asking a dumb question...like, how many of you guys work while wearing pink rollers in your hair while wearing sky blue jammys...and you will get TONS of responses. Kinda odd isn't it?

"Do you give up your life to take care of an aging parent..." hello, what did your parents give up to take care of you.  If you're a parent, then you know first hand what they gave up...a whole heck of a lot! How selfish!
Ummm....
Of course it is the company who is to blame.

I was an MT for a long time before becoming a QA person and I know what it is like. But I also know that I did my research and only sent to QA when absolutely necessary.

The MTs that I am referring to are not brand new MTs. They are not mentees by any means. They are "seasoned" MTs who have been at the company as long as I have. That's where my problem lies.

I have no problem teaching MTs and showing them where to look - it's when they don't listen and don't look anything up that is the problem. That's all.
Ummm, I should know this one.
....but I don't. Let me think... I have Windows Defender, which I guess is for anti-spyware and any other unwanted software; I have real-time protection with that and it performs a full scan each night. I run the Windows Live OneCare regularly, but not constantly; I'm not really sure what all that scans for, but it seems to find a lot of things and fixes them. I have PC Tools Registry Mechanic, but that only finds faulty files (and usually a lot of them) and fixes them.
Now that I put it all down like this and started really looking, I realize I don't actually have any anti-virus software installed on my computer, but no viruses have been detected on the other scans, either.
I have been having "sluggish" problems for quite some time, which is why I started looking for programs and how I ended up with Defender, OneCare, and Registry Mechanic, none of which took care of the problem (or made it any worse).

Looks like I have my work cut out for me. Like I said, I'll start with the list of ideas posted previously and see where that takes me. Thanks again.
Ummm.... let me see if I have this right -
You stated, 'I'm working twice as hard for a quarter of the pay I used to get.'

And you're concerned about something 'not being fair to your employers?' Why? They certainly aren't being fair to YOU.
Well, er, ummm, I can't stay away. Let's just say that.

Ummm...you need to talk to someone about this!
Why would anyone need this info? That is too strange. I would call a lawyer or another bank and find out about it. Did they SELL you the insurance or what?
Ummm...you know I would! Can I have the whole recipe?

Ummm, some MT's run their own businesses...

which was exactly the kind of advice she was asking for..

your life may be narrowed down to only MT but some of us do much, much more

Ummm, yeah!
Of course it is entered by doctors and nurses.  Yes, a lot of the information is not entered correctly.  I encounter this each day having access to EMR.  It does not surprise me.  No one seems to care.
Abacus is not free. It is $20 but worth it. You can download a trial version free which does not h
I have used this for years and have compared to Sylvan, Word, and MP Count, etc. When you have it set to count every character, bold, shift, tab, etc. It is great and always higher than the others. Now if you are wanting gross lines like in Word then no it won't be as high because Word counts blanks lines and Abacus counts a line only if there is a character on it. There is also two places to check for it to count the Headers/Footers. If you have the FREE version then it must be the trial or a very old version so you don't have all the features and functions.
Free? As in, free trial? Otherwise, I don't think you'll find a spellcheck software that's

Ummm..Am I missing the significance of something here? So, they get 20 cpl? Is there something
Good for them - good for all of them. I've dabbled in UMDNJ dictators, and you couldn't pay me 30 cpl to do it! Yuck.
Ummm... How about 3 months! And love it!

Ummm, go to the Medquist board.

ummm...I still say it depends on a lot of things..and yes, how much do you and can you do. sm
I am a parent of three. But I have the opportunity to have a break by getting a babysitter when my husband and I would like to have an evening out. My in laws are never able to do that. They pay a private nurse 900.00 a week for in home care while they are at work. They can not afford to have her come so they can take a night off or attend a family function. My kids, as well as my sister in laws kids adore their grandpa and grandma, but never get to spend time with them because they are nursing and taking care of her mother. Everyone needs a break once in awhile and they dont get one. Taking care of an ill or aging parent takes a lot of energy, time, money, et cetera. I know that is what they did for you..but isnt that a little different? They chose to have children and take care of them. You did not chose to take care of an aging sick parent and spend the next 10 years or more staring out the window while life is passing you by. No I am not selfish. I am just looking at both points of view. Nursing homes are a great value...if you can find one that has qualified loving staff--just as if you were to use a daycar for your children. My mother has worked at a nursing home for 35 years now. She loves her job and often goes in on her time off to be with some of the residents. There is nothing wrong with nursing homes so that families may have a life.
