The time it takes to get up, shower, do make-up and hair, dress, get in the car and drive to work, then back home equals about two hours for me. I work a PT job along with a FT job at home. Plus money saved not needing to use a dry cleaners, keeping up the ward robe.

Working full time at home with small children is hard but part time works great
is almost impossible. You will either have to work when your spouse is home or for only a few hours during the day and then more when they are asleep. I work part time at home and my kids (2&5 now) have done very, very well. They are great kids, very well behaved, don't get into much. I stop working to check on them/give them some attention every hour or so while I work (5 hours each afternoon or so) and they get all my attention in the morning and at night. It has worked out beautifully for us.
I only have dial-up when working from home (most of the time).
I get my work as dss files as email attachments. Originally I did not think dial-up would work at all, so I set up an office at my mom's house where I have DSL. It does only take seconds to download with DSL, and takes several minutes for a huge file with dial-up. I can download a file while I am transcribing another one. It takes less than a minute for me to send the completed file back. This is certainly acceptable, although I hope they get DSL here soon. It takes longer to Google something.

My kids have suffered greatly from me working at home with them home. SM
I have been working at home as an MT since my two kids were born. They are now 4 and 5. In the first few years, I had no help whatsoever. Their father was a bum who didnt work or take care of them while I worked. Your children get neglected while you work basically. And babies and young children desperately need your attention while they are home with you.
My kids have so many behavioral problems right now because of their neglect. I would try to set them up with things to occupy themselves, like coloring or a movie, etc.
I finally put them in day care and things have improved, but there are still a lot of issues because of the damage that was done. They still try to seek attention by doing bad things and they dont listen to me because they are so used to me letting them get away with a lot of stuff because I was too busy typing to discipline them in their early years.
If I could do it all over again, I would definitely have put them into day care from the very beginning.
My advice would be to seek PT care for your baby. Maybe you can do some work around her schedule a little when she is home, like when she takes a nap, and then bang out a bunch of work while she is in day care.

working IN A HOSPITAL is different than working at home.
Someone can steal you identity from the internet if they want to. Why would you go to the time and trouble to jeopardize a job that requires some level of skill to steal someone's identity or medical records? You could get a job as a retail clerk and get info easier than going through the testing required to become an MT.
Somehow working at home translates into not really working
My in-laws are the worst. Whenever they plan something last minute and my husband says that I had to work, they say, "but she works at home!". When I one time mentioned I had a "schedule" and basically punch a clock and work full time, I don't think they believed me. They will sometimes call mid-day during the week if they are in the area to see if I want to go for lunch, etc! The best is, my husband doesn't make all that much money, so where is it coming from, the money fairy? I am ready to strangle someone! So I know how you feel and I'm sorry it upset you. You are not alone.

I have to say that is very impressive. I'm just wondering how you split up your days, i.e. do you work a few hours at a time or all at once or what. Hope you don't mind sharing, I'm just trying to put in more hours myself, and I find I need to take frequent breaks which seems to keep my production down.

I personally give her a lot of credit for working hard to earn a decent living and making that her priority instead of out looking for a boyfriend/husband or whatever. She sounds like a person of integrity. What does it matter to you what she does in her free time?

There are companies out there that will let you quit when you reach your designated lines for the day - I work for one now - they pay you on a tiered schedule also so it is beneficial for you to keep working, but your benefits are based on the amount of lines you type, not how long you type.
35K here working not a whole lot of hours.
I probably work 35 hours a week or less. I do work on weekends, but not much. 
Working Hours
I work as an employee 37-1/2 hours a week. They let me work from 9-12 and
2-4 (sometimes I'll work 1 or 1:30-4) and then I make up the other hours anytime I want at night. Basically as long as I work 7-1/2 hours a day it's okay with them. If I have to leave the house for a half an hour/hour or so to run an errand I can do that too as long as I deduct it from my daytime hours and add it onto the evening.
Definitely split. I'm working on 10 hours right now,
not because I want to, I have to. I have to leave town in the morning for the day so I need to finish my stuff that is due tomorrow afternoon tonight. My wrists are really tired. They don't bother me when I split it up. Only 20 more patients. I guess I best get back at it. Short and sweet notes though. I did the long stuff first.

I work I guess what would be considered nights as most nights I work 8 p.m. to 1 a.m., but on Fridays and Sundays I work long days, and have Saturdays off. I wouldn't consider working anything different until all my kids are in school. My husband works days and this works out well for us. I am home with the kids all day (save on daycare and get to be with them), and I don't start until after they are all in bed at night so no guilt that I am taking time away from them either. Fridays I work during the day and am done at 6 so I have Friday night and all day and night Saturday with them too, and Sunday mornings I am still able to go to church with my family, but I work noon to 9 p.m. on Sunday so that is my only "long" day. I tried working a split shift before, woke up super early and typed before the kids got up and then typed again at night after they went to bed. That was too hard for me, but I know others who do it and love it. Email me if you want to. :)

working early AM hours
I am considering changing my hours starting work around 4 am in order to finish up earlier. Are they any of you who do this and have young kids to get up and moving in the morning too. My goal is to finish early in the summer months. I will have interuptions from seven to about nine with getting the kids ready and off to summer camp for the morning. So I would like to start as early as possible in order to get as much done as possible before they even get up. I don't know if I can do the 4 am thing, tho. I don't get to bed all that early. To those of you that do this, how do you get yourself up and moving at such an early hour????
I don't mind working more than 8 hours a day; however,
I would rather be compensated hourly and not by salary.
Here is what is holding me back also ~ I make a bit more than than 52K a year as an IC and work 6 hours a day, 5 days a week.
I will continue to keep that job as an IC, but I am thinking "wouldn't I'd rather just put more time into that IC job and make more on production than be on a clock making less money?"
PTO includes holidays. So, if I want to take Christmas off, it goes against my PTO hours.
The health insurance benefits are really not that good, though I don't need them at this time. I may in the future and they are not great. No reimbursement if you opt out.
The 401K matches up to 4% - pretty much the same as others.
I don't know ~ There doesn't seem to be anything "special" to convince me to take this job. I was hoping someone would give me their opinion to change my mind!!!

This would be a way to break away some for your FT without actually giving it up and at the same time staying current in the outside world. Then if you had a PT or p.r.n. MT job at home, you could get a feel for how it would be.

--as long as the work is in my deadline my "employer" does not care when I work- WORST is when I procrastinate and then either have to work like a nut to get done, or stay up to ungodly hours to get the work done, or work all day instead of doing whatever project or thing I wanted to get done that day. ---I can deal with the taxes, yes its a pain, but my lack of schedule is well worth it to me.

I have worked for this company for over a year now. I love the account. I love the work. I am used to it and don't want to think about going elsewhere but I am not making squat I don't get paid by the hour I was just letting you know that is the amount of time I am getting to work due to the fact there is not enough work. I have never been able to get full time work here but more that this. I don't know whether to stick it out or look elsewhere. I only have 1-1/2 years exp so I don't have a lot of options with less than 2 years exp. I don't know what I should do. I have asked about a secondary account, but they said they don't need help on any of their other accounts. Anyone else in this boat? What to do?  
full-time in office/ part-time at home
I currently work full-time in a physician's office and have started part-time online. My hope is to eventually go full-time online; however that will be done the road for a single mom with a son in college. My suggestion would be try to type part-time for a MTSO and see how that goes i.e work and money with a decision down the road for ultimately being home all the time. A guaranteed paycheck is always a necessity for me. Hope this helps.

In-house your required to meet a productivity of nothing less here on the east coast of 135 to 155 lines per hour, not to mention the QA's done weekly!! Yes, weekly, random 10 reports per MT!! I never had a problem with the QA's always between 99.6% and 99.8%. But, you work straight, no talking, in your little box (I call it). Yes, the benefits are a perk, but not that much and I worked 2nd shift always, so it was 18% of my base wage. I am still making more at home productivity wise and take a break when I want to. But, like you said circumstances change. Good luck!!
At 53 working 2 jobs 80 hours a week is impossible. I tried it, it does not work!! (sm)
I have been at this business 30+ years and at one point worked 3 jobs and 2 were for hospital contracts with taxes taken out and the other IC. It gives you no life. My suggestion, if you need the extra $$ work your 40 during the week, then 1 or 2 nights 2 hours and then Sat/Sun 16 hours which would give you 20 hours. That is more than enough and will give you a chance to see if you want to make a job change. Have tried the 2 FT 80 hours and almost had a seizure over it. Remember if your not physically well you cannot do it all!
I time myself for 2 hours and
then I get on my ellipitical or do some other exercise that makes me sweat for 20 minutes. I find if I exercise, that helps me sit back down and work quietly for another couple of hours.

Full-time is 32-40 hours BUT
This is where full-time gets tricky. Say you work you full-time hours 32-40, depending on the company,but you haven't made your line quota, hence, you end up working more hours to make your quota. Also, if your company offers health insurance and you haven't made your line count, then your health insurance is in jeopardy. That is why it is important that you have "work" consistently so you don't have the added pressure of worrying about keeping your health insurance.

When I get all the nosey/rude comments about working from home, I gave up justifying it and only now say..."It works for me, I don't even have to get dressed and can make a ton of money working from by bedroom, using all the high tech equipment that allows me to do so"..leaves it up for interpretation and usually shut's them up

 I've been working from home since it was first allowed, can't really remember the exact year, but for sure no later than 1984. My family has always said, "get a real job", "why are you stuck at home, go work at an office where you can be around people", and on and on and on and on, ad infinitum!!! I don't really have "friends" anyway because I've always been a hermit. But guess what, now the only members of my family left alive are my brother and my sister and they STILL say I should get a real job!! I just give them a disgusted look and say "yeah....I really want to have to deal with traffic jams, proper clothing regulations, no smoking rules, break time rules, punching in an out....does that seem to fit my personality???" Of course they say, "well I can see your point". However that does not keep them from saying it again some time later. Guess it is never ending, so just ignore it and laugh at them. That is all it deserves is a good laugh!!! Quite honestly, I think they are jelous.

Ihave to tell you that in order to do MT work you have to really LOVE the job because of the long hours and the amount of research that you need to do on the reports. I am not trying to discourage you, as I was in your position not that long ago, but 'ya gotta love this job. Otherwise, there is no way to succeed. You won't make millions, and chances are you will make a pittance, but if you are enjoying it, then that is the best way to go into this.

To make at least $15.00 an hour at home, a person would need to transcribe 150 lines per hour and be paid .10 cpl. This comes with experience but you have to find the right company.
I am in a small rural hospital and I know our Transcriptionist does not get $15.00 an hour.

Definitely pros and cons to working at home. I consider myself a sociable person and feel hemmed in sometimes as well, even tho I have hubby, 3 kids and 2 dogs. I have done MT on the outside and it's nice to go and be with others doing the same thing, (it's great to have someone there to do "a listen" when stuck on something difficult) PLUS I also miss company potlucks, birthday celebrations, gossip (he he) and other "officey" stuff. Now that I'm working at home, I try to go out on at least one "date" a week with a friend, either for coffee or lunch or happy hour. Also I volunteer for church and school stuff. Come to think of it, though, I do find myself striking up conversations with complete strangers while shopping in Wal-Mart -- so maybe I DO need to get a life and get out more!!!

Would like "k" to say if she works for a national, etc. I am "downsizing" to home and petrified, don't want people in and out of my home while I'm working, etc., also afraid of getting involved with the "wrong" national. I also would like a flexible schedule. Just a little scared after working 20+ years out of the house.

Seems to me if they told you 9-5, and yes, I remember your post asked about going home after you finish your work so I presume you do work in their office.....you have to be there from 9 to 5 I would presume. R U being paid hourly or salaried? Either/or, if they told you *work from 9-5* I presume that's exactly what they mean. When you work in an office for someone else, you have no flexibility for the things you were able to be flexible with when you worked from home.

I am expecting my 3rd child this winter and work at home. I am nervous about being able to work and tend to the baby. My 2 older kids are in school. Any tips or advice would be appreciated. I really do not want to put this child in daycare as it is expensive and I would rather have my child with me if possible.

I used to work in clinic a 40 mile drive one way. I did this for almost 10 years. I starting figuring out how long I was on the road and it added up to almost a day a week. No wonder I had weekends to myself, but it did not seem like it as M-F I had lost that extra day, doing nothing but sitting and driving. Not very productive. Have been at home working for the past 6 years. There are pluses and minuses to everything. Sometimes the grass is not always greener on the other side. Weigh the pluses and minuses:)

She is working at home for them as an IC. I agree that she should charge for her time but she has to let them know. She needs to draw up a short contract stating what she services she will provide for what price, TAT, etc. Does not have to be a long drawn out 4 page contract just a simple one pager stating what she provides and what is expected of the account.
However I do not agree with the above poster on not letting your accounts know when you will be unavailable or out of town. You may not have to tell them where you are going but you have a responsibility to let them know you are not available and not simply do not show up. If I did that, my accounts would be looking for someone else fast. They all work with me when I take time off but again, to simply not acceptable. That is like waiting for the cable guy all day long.

Hello all!
I work out of my home for a physcial therapy office - I go every day and pick up tapes and return the paperwork I have completed along with the blank tapes back to the office. I don't have time to chat with the people who work there much, I have known some of them for a few years, but not close. I am not necessarily looking to make friends with any of them, but wondered what others do about connecting with people for social time. I am single, so no husband, kids, etc to fill that void. I love working out of my home very much, but am missing people contact and wondered what others do. I used to have many friends around here (rural Iowa), but most have moved away or gotten married and got busy with their families. Not a lot of choices of places to go to meet new friends - wish there was a way to create a work-at-home group in my area and maybe meet other transcritpionists or just find people who are experiencing the same things of isolation and what comes with working out of ones home. Any ideas or advice from any and all would be appreciated!! Thanks!!

Well, in word only am I free as a bird - but I have responsibilities, almost like having children of my own since I am the only one of my siblings who watches over my elderly parents - I check on them most every day and if they need help with things or have to be driven to a doctor's appt or other places, I do all that. I have asked other people to help when it was impossible for me to do so, but it is not something I can ask someone else to do on a full time basis. It is my responsibility and since they have always been there for me I feel it only fair I am there for them.
Believe me, I have entertained the idea more than once. Thanks!!
