I can see the point of both sides but I think that you have to go with what you feel is the right thing to do and what you do really shouldn't have any bearing on what other people, the doctors or whoever are doing. Your decision should be based on what you know to be right and you'll come out way ahead in the long run by building a reputation of fairness and honesty and integrity. Congratulations on even wondering about it anyway and not just saying YEEHAW off to the bank I go!!

I didn't think HIPAA prohibited calling patient names in waiting room, patient log-in sheets (excluding reason for visit, etc.) in doctor's offices. If you're from a small city, which I've been, you're most likely going to know half of the people sitting in the waiting room, and, yes, sometimes that's uncomfortable if you don't feel like chatting about why you're there or why you're there with a member of your family, but don't know how a person would go about getting around that kind of thing. I know some of the offices I've been to in the past couple of years have removed the patient log-in sheet from the countertop and just check you off when you notify them when you come in and some of them have had information on the forms you fill out on how to notify you/listed contacts, by cell, home phone, if they can leave a message etc. and even that they may call your name in the waiting room. I saw somewhere that some offices have started using like the little buzzer thingies that you get at restaurants...

Then the OP goes on to say others are "negative"????? Do you find it offensive someone calls you a fool or you are acting foolish when you complain or joke about your work/manager/company? When posters respond, they are unpleasantly surprised that this would produce negativity against the OP?
Hot debate....I have been using disc for everything....
for over 10 months now and my main account does nothing but spine injections.....either a HUGE lack of communication (MQ?) or disc is just fine by them...not a word from QA or my accounts!! In fact, if you do a Google search for 'spinal disk' you come up with sites with both 'spinal disc' and 'spinal disk', every other one. Better ask you accounts.

Now that I'm on the other side of the QA debate
I can totally understand why so many people gripe about QA on these boards.
When I was doing QA, I tried really hard to be fair, and to not nitpick every little thing.
Now that I'm back to just doing MT, I am really starting to dislike some QA people. So I just wanted to say I'm sorry for all the stuff I said before, sticking up for QA in general because I see now that there are a lot of horrid QA people.
Having a high IQ definitely DOES NOT mean that you are superior or well adjusted or happy. Probably the opposite. Personally, I view myself as a (somewhat) total misfit. I say somewhat because I fool a lot of people (including my loved ones) into thinking I am totally normal, when, in fact, I have lots of hang-ups. Then again, maybe other people have similar or worse hang-ups and are not aware of them or have such a high ego they don't care! In other words, people with high IQs can be oversensitive and look for perfection while others with more normal IQs really don't care what everyone else thinks.
Some asked where we came up with our IQ score. I am in my 50s and, back then, the schools tested IQ scores. They would keep the score secret, but my teacher leaked my score out to my parents, he was so excited. It was 137 then. And, with the internet, you can now take a standard IQ test online. My score was still 137 at age 46, but was lower a couple of years ago.
My firstborn, also, has a high IQ at 139, but my two other children with more normal IQs as well as my husband have higher self-esteem. Also, I am an ABSOLUTE TOTAL IDIOT MECHANICALLY. WE ARE TALKING TOTAL NO LOGIC HERE. CAN NOT TURN ON THE TV(digital with black box), OR OPEN ANYTHING WITHOUT THINKING *LEFTY, LOOSY, RIGHTY TIGHTY.* And I only learned that recently. What a blessing.
Seriously, even Einstein couldn't remember the way to get home and forget to..like..put on his socks or bring his lunch. Help! No, I am not comparing myself or other posters to Einstein! Just stating that a high IQ does not, in any fashion, spell success or personal happiness. But, yes, it figures to me that MTs, in general, might have higher IQs and want to hide out at home typing technical reports.
Bologna. There wasn't a debate
until you started one. I questioned putting in a note that a patient smelled like manure. I have nothing against manure or farming or anything of the like, but I had a *gut reaction* it shouldn't be in here because it had NOTHING to do with the medical note. I asked, and the doc said leave it in. Point is...I don't question manure but I questioned whether it belonged in the note.
Digging a little deeper into the CMT debate -
- I think 'CMT preferred' is ALSO another way of saying, 'MT's over 45 need not apply'. Sounds like age-discrimination to me, since most MTs who don't feel the need for a CMT were transcribing as a profession when the CMTs were still wearing Pampers.
I don't understand this whole QA debate in the first place...
or why so many people dislike QA....I do both MT and QA...I just don't get it...

Oh, and yes, outsourcing will collapse in times to come when the financial divide reduces among nations, especially once major unions like the EU are formed. Moreover, research indicates that it's more of a hassle to manage and offers only marginal cost reduction.

Outsourcing is what caused the demise of the United States economy, in my opinion. The rest of the world depends on the U.S. economy; listen to the news. Multilingual for the U.S.? Realize we are from different backgrounds, but in the U.S. English is the official, unofficial language. In the U.S., learn the language. Reap the benefits but can't speak the language? Automate Spanish and French for our bordering countries but beyond that? I have had very bad experience dealing with customer service reps from another country. You can't even understand each other some of the time. Ask them where they are from and they mispronounce the name of the city and state. Ask them their name. Fake one given. Very misleading. Our country in the last few years has gone downhill economically--lost jobs, lost homes, medicines unavailable for those who need it, because they cannot afford it, etc. Keep people in jobs in the U.S., and the U.S. will do better economically, hence the world would do better economically. Worldwide recession did not start until after U.S. failed--the trickle effect. 24/7 coverage? Pay people enough, and they will work. Heck, at this point, pay them anything and they will work the off shifts. Some people want the graveyard shifts. Americans working in America who aren't bilingual in certain areas (Texas, for example) can't even get a job at Wal-Mart. Think about it. Outsourcing was our demise.

I agree that stopping the outsourcing would be better for the economy since Japan blamed its problems on outsourcing and temp agencies 2008.

In our big publishing company, help desk and infrastructure support have been consolidated and outsourced several years ago, with disastrous results. Since then, we have had to deal with extended production-critical outages, with CSRs who don't understand simple technical words that everyone in U.S. knows, and with CSRs whose heavy English accent is no good for any kind of customer support.

It is of course expected that someone from Nuance Communications, which makes IVR software, would be in favor of automated response systems, which drive their revenue. And of course Nick Sharma would prefer outsourcing to India. What are needed are neutral viewpoints. If customers could get a choice of country (Press 1 for U.S., Press 2 for India), when they call their support line, this would make clear what customers prefer.
My issue with outsourcing has nothing to do with the call center agents themselves. My issue is with the executives who implement this solution without thinking it all the way through. They are puppet masters, walking off with all the money on the backs of their employees. Their only concern is the bottom line, the shareholders, and their yearly bonuses. Customer satisfaction seems to have taken a back seat to greed long ago, and outsourcing is merely one facet of this big picture. Don't blame the tech in India who's busting his ass for next to no money to feed his family, just like us "high-and-mighty" Americans do. Blame the executive who hasn't spent enough time and money on training these people, sending them to English class to speak and write clearly, and not paying them enough to get the high quality people that they need to man the call center.

Man, this is surely a hot topic! Everyone certainly has their own opinion. In the end, you just have to do for your child what you feel is right. Each child is so different, and you are the only one who REALLY knows YOUR child. Some children flourish in the public school system. Some do not for whatever reason. My first two childen went to public school.
My third (ADHD) WANTED to go to public school, but just couldn't handle it, no matter how much medication and how much counseling, and ended up being homeschooled through the internet for 6,7,8, and begged to try the 2,000 kid high school, so she did. Total disaster. Constant phone calls from the school (same as in grade school) and a 1.6 GPA. She then went back to homeschool through the local alternative school, got a 4.0 GPA. Begged to try the high school again for Junior year. Even worst disaster. 0.6 GPA. She flunked everything she couldn't bring HOME to do. Flunked floral design, basketball, swimming, ceramics, band. Passed all the academics, English, history, science. She is now back to homeschooling through the alternative school, but is allowed to go to the high school dances and walk down the isle for graduation, so she is not too unhappy with that. Good luck to you, whatever you choose.

you were rude, crude, and obnoxious, I could see where you might feel defensive and take it personally. I think the harshest thing I've said to you so far is that you were "stretching the truth" and that you were "misleading people" when you failed to divulge that you work 12 hour days and count gross lines.

Uh yeah, in a debate there's usually defense and an offense. Hence someone is always "on the
defensive." I simply posted my opinion about non-compete clauses and my experience with an untrustworthy service and how I handled it and then I'm called unethical and unprofessional. That kind of puts me on the defensive, dontcha think? Kind of begs me to defend my actions... I second that.. That's what makes America so great... vibrant, spirited, even heated debate.

Well, isn't this interesting
A job ad on another board caught my eye. It stated they pay on a 65 character line plus numbers and punctutation. If they are stating they DO pay for numbers and punctuation, would that not mean that some companies are not paying for those items??? OMG, it just gets worse and worse the way MTSO's are finding new ways to screw the workers. Gee, no wonder we were told to not spell out numbers any longer.
I think it's interesting as well....
While MTs often think it's fine for them to throw out every negative they can think of about a company, they tend to freak to think a company might tell the negatives they experienced about the MT. Why is that? I understand the need for MTs to support each other, it's good for us. Yet surely we arent' so naive as to think every MT is good, skilled, and has a work ethic that should demand the kind of respect they seem to feel entitled to. In my experience, it's not always the company who is at fault, thus I take everything with a grain of salt and make my own judgements.

This is probably similar to what I have heard about, called EMR (electronic medical records). I work for a very large orthopaedic clinic (as my part-time job) and I have been told that they are going to implement this in the next two years, but they expect with all the docs and everything that it will take three to five years to totally run with it. It upsets me because it will eliminate the need for Transcriptionist as well as billers. Apparently this EMR does it all. I'm trying to get my finances in order so that I can go to nursing school because I don't feel secure in the field anymore. I am a single mother and I have over 20 years experience. It's just a shame.

Your comments are so interesting to me. I have had the same experience with MQ and it has been really difficult. I've gone into debt working for them. What I don't get is why they wouldn't want us to produce. When we produce, they make money. It's a no brainer. What's the deal?

My first husband I met at a work party (I was a paramedic). He was a cop who volunteered part time. My second I met online in a chat room. He messaged and said "I'm looking for a wife" and I told him "well good luck to you" and shut him off. 9 years later here were are! I had to have a license when I had an "office" outside of home with employees, etc., but not now since working at home. Been home for 8 years now without one and my accountant says I don't need one. I know many, many IC's at home none required to have a license. I'm certainly not arguing with you, just think that is strange.

I have always considered myself a pretty good judge of character. For instance, the first time I saw Mr. Mason I said that he had nothing to do with the disappearance of his fiancee, who later came to be known as "The Runaway Bride".
Anyway, I really feel that in the case of Patsy Ramsey she is innocent. (I think too that her battle with ovarian cancer began before the murder took place . . . can't remember for sure.)
Another thing, I see the photos of Van der Sloot and the Kalpos, and I can just see the horns, tails, and pitchforks as though they were part of the picture . . . I did go to your link and found out it is KForce. I looked at their jobs and they do have positions for traveling transcriptionists (also for traveling coders). It looks like the MTs are needed in Pittsburgh and somewhere in Oregon. Also looks like the pay is $20/hour.
That would be fun to do.
But don't you think a hospital would send out work to a service rather than have a temp come in to do their work?

I am probably going to get bashed for this, but I have to say it is interesting how this thread has just totally spiraled and how it keeps going around and around with basically how hard this and that job is, and how great this or that job is, and how great this or that education is.
My experience with has been this... When I was a CNA, some of the LPNs at the nursing home would never miss a chance to gloat about how superior they were because they were LPNs and we were "just" CNAs. When I was an LPN at my first hospital job, there were those RNs who could never miss a chance to gloat at how superior they were because we were "just" LPNs. As an LPN I then worked at a medical equipment company and primarily dealt with insurance submissions, the enteral feeding line and incontinence line. At that job, I was viewed as lower on the totem pole by some because I didn't have maybe as glamorous job as someone who did marketing for wheelchairs or something like that. Now that I am doing transcription, I run into the you are "just" a typist.
I have to say that if I waited for everyone in the world to think that my job was important to feel satisfied doing it, well... it could be a long wait. I know that in each job I have had that I am making a difference to someone somewhere by doing my small part, and knowing that I am doing a good job is my own satisfaction in itself.
This whole situation reminds me of that Dr. Seuss book/movie about the star-bellied sneeches... any moms out there know what I am talking about?

I have been setting up one row the way I want and then doing just a Ctrl-C and pasting it into the next row. Once I get a few rows built up, I copy the block of rows and paste a block at a time.
Fortunately I have decided to let this account go so I won't have to do this much longer. If there are any radiology MTs out there looking for pretty much all the work you can handle and then some, click on the link below. It's a good account, but I have two other part-time accounts that provide enough income and I just don't need the stress.

Actually I used to drive truck before I did MT work. Believe it or not, I make more money now than I did then. If the wheels aren't turning you make no money, just like you don't if your fingers aren't typing.

I find it interesting to see how everyone reacts to a message like the one posted. Years do not give you a leg up in this business, knowledge and application of it do, however. I have worked in all aspects of this business and I have come to realize that certainly not every MT with years, with a CMT, with an HIM degree or that sort of qualification makes you a good transcriptionist. It is not about time in .. it is about what you know. It is not about the technology per se, it is about how willing are you to be flexible and learn the new stuff and it is very much about showing up to do your without an attitude. It is about not cherrypicking while at work because you respect your colleagues! It is about helping those around you be better at what they do that strengthens your own resolve.
How many companies fail because they cannot find dependable help, knowledgeable help who do not put a hang nail before showing up for work and doing their shift. How many need continuing education to stay current in this business but feel it is an intrusion.
Perhaps Dee was taken out of context .. she has been in business for years and has very good things to say about her MTs. Ever been in a room with MTSOs joking about the people who work for them? Most unsavory, let me tell you!! I am not defending Dee if the quote is what she said, but I might point out too that M-TEC's reputation is a good one amongst MTs primarily and that to me is the best advertisement for a program - how well the grads have done overall. My phone rings and I get stoked about some new atrocity every single day, but I have long come to realize that I can only watch my own back and I have settled down into doing just that and to preserving my very own ability to be employable. I find it works well! I am making good money and I have pulled the knives out of my back and am finally sort of having a life!

These are some interesting posts. I had the same thought, that maybe he thinks this career is not impressive enough, because he certainly was proud of me when I was a cancer registrar. This makes me wonder. But anyway, I am not out to impress anyone. If this is what he is feeling, then he will have to get over it. He is very academic and you may have touched on something here. but you must admit that some of the questions asked are very basic. I look at the word board all the time just to see if I can figure out what the poster is asking. For instance, the posts by AJ. If this person had an ENT reference book, it would be very easy to go by what she/he is hearing, look under fracture and they could have come up with zygomatic. Less time than it takes to post and wait for an answer. Same with the other 2 questions AJ asked. Very basic. that's interesting
