Make sure button in back is set to DD. Make sure your volume button is not turned all the way down. Very top jack is the foot pedal. Once you get the dictation to play, just unplug your headset and this will bring up the speaker to play out loud. I'm going through the same thing - thought I was buying a Dictaphone.
