This is true for me BECAUSE of the timekeeping my company uses.

Posted By: MW on 2007-12-30
In Reply to: Ethical? - Hmm

Our software only records actual keyboard hours, not just signed-in hours. So unless you are actively typing in a record, you are not considered "working" and the timekeeping stops. If you pee, you're not working. if you're in a chart and stop for more than 5 mins (like researching), you're not working. It always, always takes way more than 8 hours to get in 8 hours of 'work.' It's completely bullsh**.

This may not hold true if the company is
I believe there was a ruling in the last few months that changed this for the state of New York but since no one answering you (including myself) so far is a tax accountant, you should ask a professional.
In true IC situations, the company CANNOT set your hours...
However, your contract can stipulate that you do a certain amount of work within a certain timeframe.  They also can ASK you for a general idea of when you will be working, but they cannot make you/tell you that you have to be working certain hours.  If they tell you when you have to work, you are not longer an INDEPENDENT contractor - "independent" being the keyword here.  If they set the hours, you are an employee.
That's sooo not true. The company can change
Nice try but you really don't understand what you are talking about.
Not true. I work for a company that offshores.
Good grief.

SO true! My company says they adhere strictly -
to the BOS, but then there are pages and pages of EXCEPTIONS to the rules for different accounts, and even different individual doctors. The docs are the ones who want their notes transcribed, so it just makes sense to do it the way THEY want it.
Not true. "If the company makes money"???
That's funny.

Bonuses are usually based upon production. If you reach a certain production, you receive a bonus.

Whatever criteria is set, one must meet - I agree.

However, if an MT meets that criteria, and the bonus is to be paid on a certain date, they are delinquent in pay if the company does not pay on that date. The company set the time...not the MT.

I'd still seek a legal remedy.
True. I was told this by a friend who is a computer tech at a company
here in town. He was going to do it for me. No way would I try to do it myself. Luckily, I was able to buy one with XP on it from Dell.
Spoken from the true heart of a company owner (inside)
we read all kinds of things on this site. Most of it terrible things that are done to us. Companies making gross amounts of money over our backs and to spend it buying other companies for gross amounts of money. This company knew what they were doing long before they did it, don't tell me or anyone they didn't. They never even considered this woman let alone knew she was having surgery. You guys don't think that way. You don't see our faces and feel whatever you do to make a profit justifies the means. I am not a religious person but I do know what goes around comes around. Chew that.

As far as "preparing ourselves," how do you do that when pay is low, you have to work umteen hours for a halfway decent line count, and then get let go at Christmas time?

As far as short-sightedness? What is astounding is you would even say such a thing as you are probably sitting by a Christmas tree done done by Neiman Marcus. It is hard to save any money with what is happening to the transcriptionists today.

Do not answer this with attacking me. I don't answer trivial, cruel people.
Thank you ghost! So true! So true! More than one person!

true, true - but what you see as arrogance...sm

I think a lot of people go the extreme -

so, if I had to be one way or the other (being a humble extremist myself...*LOL*), I'd rather have too much self-esteem than not enough (been there, done that the first 30 years!!! *L*).  And I am a truly humble person, been recognized for just that.....but because of *been there, done that* - and all sorts of therapies (not drug therapies), some end up the other way.  Oh well, this was a fun couple of posts - so I thought.

Gave me much to chew on :)  Have fun!

True but to say there are no good MTs not true.

What Company is This? I have been hired by a company that is sending a foot pedal.. Don't want t

The company cutting cpl, the company stopping paying for headers

Good of the company? As IC, I am my own company. Not my problem if she has problems as long as I do
:P
Accepted a job with a new company, gave two weeks notice to my old company..

Old company, let me go before two weeks was up.  New company, said they were having trouble getting me set up and my equipment ready, but they would pay me while I waited.  It's been a month, still no check from new company even though I was told it was "in the mail."  I have no income and am at a loss.

I have a signed offer letter from the new company, contracts, etc.  I applied for unemployment, but old company is saying I quit and technically I am currently employed with the new company!  New company is not returning calls or answering email.

What should I do!?!?!?!

I started sending my resume out today, but the process of getting a new job will take at least two weeks and I need money now to catch up on what I'm behind!

You don't want to work for this company. Call your current company and
tell them that you have decided against the new position and tell them that you would like to stay. It is cheaper for them to let you stay than to train someone new. A company who could be so tacky as the one you just spoke of is one you do not want to work for. You can rescind your resignation. If you are a good MT, they will be glad you did.
With my company, ICs use their own emails, employees have company email.

....3 months later my old company rehired me; can you return to your 1st company?

Local radiology company, not transcription company
who has only 5 transcriptionists and are not hiring at this moment. We all work at home and get great benefits, no insurance out of pocket and 22 days paid vacation in the first year, after that it goes up. I feel very fortunate to have found them, but again I chose them because they did not do production, so now that they are, I'm a little disappointed.
I think it varies greatly from company to company...sm
I was hired five months ago by a national straight out of school at 8 cpl. I think it just depends on your knowledge level and ability, and of course, what the company is willing to pay.
i think it varies from company to company and/or location

VR company? Not when the MT company owns its own VR equipment. n/m.

I have my own company email with my new company.
I can't answer your questions in your original post, I can tell you that with my new company, I have my own company email account, and I much prefer it. My old company had us use our personal email accounts, and they listed everyone who received emails in the cc line. They really never maintained those lists, and I received emails from them for a full five months after I quit - that despite my repeatedly asking to be removed from lists. Because the list had been passed from one person to the next in the company, I kept having to block sender after sender. Finally I replied to all, for each and every email I had gotten over a month's time. Well, that pretty much ended it.
I like to keep work and personal separate as much as possible.
It can vary from company to company.
If a company is on one coast and you on the other it can affect shift time, meaning usually if you want to start work 9-10 instead of 11 you could for 3rd shift, etc.
Buy your own... company computers are for that company only!

some of what you want to know varies from company to company,
client to client. The services each have their own QA grading system and you will get a copy at hire that tells you everything they deduct, and for how many points. This usually also includes formatting, such as wrong dates, right exam/wrong patient, etc.

You will need to know your punctuation and grammar first and foremost and use it properly, this is what you do. THEN if the client requests garbage in/garbage out (usually because they don't trust leaving anything up to us), you give it to them even though it hurts -- and should not be marked off QA for it.

Where do you study? Colleges with the 2 yr transcription course in my state make you take a year (or 2) of English grammar. No offense, but it's pretty much a 5th/6th grade review (is vs are, doctors' vs doctor's).

blanks will be limited, usually to 2, before you cannot send the report to client.

Wrong shortcuts - pay attendion to detail.
Varies from company to company
My first company I chose specifically because I knew they had a mentoring program and you had 12 weeks of "mentoring" to get up to speed. The training was very thorough. The first week was all training classes. There were very limited samples (1-2 per doc if at all). I worked there 6 months and never made their production quota, but they didn't care. When I asked my account manager about it, she said they knew the account was very difficult 95+% ESLs) and she wasn't worried about my production, that I was doing well.

I have also worked with companies that just did a training over the phone (usually about an hour) just to learn the platform. Then they did full QA for a day or two and then I was on my own. For both of these companies, I could review all the past reports of the doctors on the platform. That was really nice. I didn't have production requirements with these positions, just a daily schedule that I had to stick to. They just wanted to know when I would be working.

My recent company gave me a 10-minute training over the phone and gave me a couple of samples of a couple of the harder docs. I then had to submit 3 reports to the account manager to review, and then I was off on my own and was required to meet production immediately.

So it all depends. Each company is different. Good luck on the new job!

True!

that's so true nm

this is sad, but true
search engines are great, but they pick up all the WRONG information also...so be careful
That may be true for No. Cal. (sm)

in Southern Cal (Orange County), the accounts have become quite scarce and most doctors will not pay over 11 cents per line, that is, if you can find your own accounts at all anymore.  They get a lot of solicitations and do not have to pay over 11 cents.  There is a lot of EMR taking over out here or all the accounts have been taken by large services.

Sad but true
.
Of course, what you say is all true; however...
my compassion and tolerance dries up pretty quickly when someone expects special treatment (plays the ____ card, if you will) because of situations they are in a result of their own decisions.

This comes across as harsh, but it's a fact of life that decisions do have consequences, and when people try to minimize the consequences of their actions and/or expect other people to pick up their slack, I get mighty testy indeed.
Hey, what I said is true - I do it --
I don't cherrypick. I probably work longer hours (about 9-1/2 to 10 a day)than most but I can get 3000 lines in a day and if I worked longer, say 15-16 hours, I have no doubt I could get 4800 lines.

No one is cutting ANYONE's line count. I just stick with it, man. I keep typing while others are up running around doing their laundry, or tending to a kid, or playing on this board. I just keep typing steadily along.

Hey, man, I'm sorry if you have problems getting more lines but that doesn't mean I or anyone else am taking them from you. They are there. Sit down and type 'em.

And NO, I don't work for this company. Every company has CPs and it is not fair. But just because YOU can't do someone else's line count doesn't mean they didn't get it -- without doing something unfairly.
That's not true (sm)
I confirmed this with my office when I started DQS. I also tested it by importing text into another program and all characters and spaces, including the red headers were counted.

Is this true?

A girl at work today told me that Keanu Reeves is the (late) Christopher Reeves son.

I never heard this before, and so far I am unable to document via the internet.  Anyone have any input?  Much thanks.

It is true

Dont doubt it, it is true.

UN-true
Beth, face the fact that we aren't buying your bunch of hooey.  Shame on you for trying to sell it to us.  Go away.  Go troll somewhere else.
SO TRUE
I couldn't believe what was happening. I knew that I was producing much, much more work, but couldn't understand why I was not getting near the lines that I was getting before the switch. Then, one day, I found out. I've hated MQ every since.
It's true
In DQS hit F9 and to a detailed summary of your lines. Then click on a report. Two types of reports will be shown. One is the way the reports shows up after corrections are made and the other is for payroll which is the way you transcribed the report. Choose the payroll one and then scroll to the bottom. It is not hard to figure out. And, YES, you can look at what you have transcribed this way. The head honchos want us to look at our work after it has been corrected so we will know what mistakes not to make any more. I have been transcribing for 23 years and if I leave a blank it is usually because I cannot hear what the dictator is saying. Typically when I recheck a report, the ME or QA person could not figure it out either. Sometimes they leave the blank and sometimes they just take it out and put something odd in its place. Now, how is that right? Everyone should be checking their reports.
It is so true
Where I worked previously, we were able to add a "weighted factor" for difficult dictators and for certain types of reports as some in the office thought those reports took more time to transcribe or were just more difficult - OP and CONSULTS. If you look at the bottom of the payroll report you will see all kinds of figures where items are counted, not counted, possibly could be adjusted in the future, etc. Look at it, and figure out for yourself what the future holds!!!
It is so true
Mtheaded - I think we worked for the same company before.  Would you care to e-mail me?
Tis true...
We're swamped!
This is not true!
I am a Quality Assurance specialist with a large national transcription company and I beg to differ with your statement.  We send our overflow work to India and let me tell you, their quality is NOT "superior" to the American MT - In fact, we have to do 100% QA on each and every job - your hair would curl at some of the mistakes I have seen just because they don't understand basic English colloquialisms.  When all work has to be 100% QA'd by a salaried individual, where is the savings?  Unless you send unedited, unproofed work to your clients, in which case I don't think it matters where the good MTs are...you will be out of business soon.  Don't dare compare the quality of American and Indian MTs.
