if you take the CMT exam then you're paying money into AAMT for the testing and future costs associated with keeping that credential. With AAMT supporting overseas workers you're basically supporting such measures.
Most hospitals/clinics/doctors I've come into contact with over the years don't know or care what a CMT is - they go by the quality of the reports transcribed. I've personally QA'd many CMTs who struggled to meet and keep the company I work for's standards and while many non-CMT MTs had scores in the 99-100% range on QA audits.
I say that you should only get your CMT if your employer is going to give you enough extra pay to make it worthwhile.
