you should shut down your computer. plug in the pedal, restart your computer, and it should recognize that the pedal is there. It won't recognize it if you just plug it in with the computer already running. give it a shot. good luck.
Software for foot pedals? sm
If I would purchase an Infinity foot pedal, would I be able to use it with any software, such as Expresscribe or my MP3 player? Or does it come with some type of software.
Still afraid to purchase a foot pedal as I bought one last year and it just sits here because I can't get it to work. Tried it with Expresscribe and get a message that the connection is not recognized (USB port).

Use your mouse and keep going back as another poster said. It is time consuming, but you'll be surprised at finding that something you thought you didn't understand will become crystal clear after listening to it over and over. :)

Also regarding foot pedals and antivirus software programs
You can also try to find foot pedals on ebay, there they are much cheaper, I know, everybody knows this.
I think every antivirus software 'works' with any platform.
Why should it make a difference?
I do not think that the companies mean that some antivirus softwares DO NOT WORK with their platforms, they just ask for the safest and believe tht these 2, Norton and McAfee are the safest.
I work with Escription/Editscript and it is strongly recommended by my employer that either Noton or McAfee is downloaded and paid for.
I have McAfee, because, be;ieve it or not, MTSOs see these 2 as sefest.

I provide the template, I don't provide the headings though.
but I do pay them for everything that they transcribe. So, the MT has the initial template, they fill in the demographic fields, the body of text, cc information, etc. and that's what they are paid for. The body of text that the MT transcribes would include headings such as Subjective, Objective, etc., however the actual template that includes the logo, wording such as Patient Name, Date of Service, Attending Physician, etc. are not paid for. The template consists of about 8 lines total.

If I were you, I'd hold off on purchasing anything sm
until you find a position with a company as many (if not most) companies will supply you with the pedal and software. All you would need to do is plug the pedal into your computer. The companies usually will install the software for you via your phone line or will send you a CD, whatever.
USB is the type of "plug." It's small, about a quarter-inch wide and has a little design on it with a circle, an arrow that points to the plug, and a little square.
The other type of pedal outlet has the little pins inside. You will need to count the little pins to find out what kind you have.

Be sure to have the person that sold it to you notify Textware Solutions that they are no longer using it and that you are now the license owner. This will allow you to take advantage of all the benefits of being the license owner such as discounted upgrades, free tech support, etc. 
Don't even THINK about purchasing Speedtype. There are absolutely no
medical words whatsoever and you have to add everything. Why in the world would the AAMT support this product and not any of the others? I spent over 160.00 on this product and my productivity has increased by ZERO.
I emailed for a refund and have heard nothing. I just hope that when I go to "resell" it they allow me with their licensing regulations!
Now I have to spend an extra 200.00 for InstantText which I should have purchased in the beginning - Can you imagine? 500.00 in the hole just to find which expander is best for you??/ I am highly livid right now.

Computer Purchasing Suggestions!
I have posted this before, but not for a while. To me, one of my biggest hurdles to leave MQ was the computer issue. I had another one of my own, but it was a dinosaur relic. I absolutely had zero money to pay for one in full, and my credit cards were melted. So, you have 2 very viable reliable options. QVC and HSN. QVC specializes in Dell, HSN Gateway. I have desktop PCs from both, and they all were great. I do not recommend laptops from either, though. They both offer easy monthly payments on select computers. Sometimes the selections change daily, other times weekly. If you browse on line and see a computer you like, below the ad it will even say when a show may be running, and on that day there will be lots more choices. You can shop online and see which ones are on Easy Pay with QVC or Flex Pay with HSN. They sell really nice models, and for usually around $600 to $800, you can get a fully-loaded great computer with flat screen monitor, printer/scanner, the works and they divide it into 6 to 8 payments for you. All you need is a debit card. Even a brand new customer qualifies for these payment plans. It saved me, literally, and enabled me to apply and get several IC jobs and get my life and happiness and freedom and money back again! Yet I could never have afforded to buy a computer any other way at that sad time in my life. Just in case some are thinking this is an obstacle, please check this out. With both Dell and Gateway, you get your own personalized service # as well, not the one regular customers get, and the service was great, the rare times I needed help. We've purchased computers for the whole family this way.

I am just a bit concerned that I would make this huge financial investment up front, but its a risk I guess worth taking, because I want to do this. Can I ask, what tax form do you file, and do you find that the business balances itself out; in other words, do you have to end up paying a lot in taxes, or do the expenses balance it out? Also, anyone: advice for a newbie: how do you recommend starting out, when it is so slow in the beginning due to programming macros, auto texting, and looking up every other word when you're first starting out??

If u need server software, try guild ftp. If just user software
then try cuteftp, coffeecupftp, or wsftp. They don't charge a line rate and I believe guildftp server software is still free.
How does MQ provide DQS to a
hospital and you not work for MQ?
If you can prove this is true (which I happen to believe you can), then please help us. Some of people are losing their health insurance and other benefits over loss of lines. To me, this is very serious.

So, you have no MQ experience just experience with DQS program. By the way, most MTs who work outside of the hospital DO NOT GET PAID for headers, footers, looking up patient names, etc.; so perhaps, you should just stick to DQS problems at your hospital and not lump MQ into this. No, I am not a MQ advocate, but if you don't work for MQ, you can't really speak about what they pay for and what they don't pay for.
P.S. I am a single mom, struggling MT for the past 15 years, so I am no threat if you think I am MQ management, you need to rethink that.

Hard to find when you're not sure what the name is even starting with. Even with a data base of 1,000 physicians, it's constant searching. I use the search option and try to search for just one tiny part of the name I can understands, but it takes forever!

This website is criticized by people for being overly negative and when people make such harsh comments without having anything to base it on, it makes the poster look suspicious. Specifically, what type of pedal and headset are you using, including whether each one plugs into a USB port (flat rectangular plug) or a gameport/audio jack (mini-phono type plug). Also, which operating system are you using (Windows 2000, XP, Vista, etc.)?
It sounds like you have a resource conflict, meaning that both devices are trying to use the same "channel", to put it in lay terms. Such conflicts can be resolved in Control Panel --> Device Manager, but it takes a little technical savvy to do this and such situations have become much more rare with Plug and Play technology.
As a rule, two USB devices will "play nicely" together without any intervention on your part although sometimes you have to install a bit of software from a disk that comes with the device. So, if only one of your devices is USB might be to pick up a USB version of whichever one is not. Hopefully, this would be your headset, because you can pick up some very good USB headsets pretty cheaply.
Usually, the company you IC for will provide you
with whatever software you need to work. You do need to have your own PC, pedal, high-speed internet, etc. The going rate for IC working for a specific company is usually 8 cpl to 10 cpl for transcription and 4 to 5 cpl for VR editing. And usually the companies make an offer and you either accept or don't.
If you are looking to get your own accounts, then you aren't an IC, you're self employed, you make the offer and decide the cpl you will charge and then what you charge depends on what part of the country you live in. Plus when you're self employed, you bill them usually monthly.
Wav pedals
No, wav pedals can be proprietary. Wav player software is divided into two catagories, OEM & Generic. The OEM solutions generally have wav pedals specifically for their solution. By a large, Generic solutions make use of the Infinity wav pedal. However, some modify the pedal so that the user must purchase the hardware from them $$$$$

I'm really confused and need some clarification. I have been transcribing for some local doctors the old-fashioned way with cassettes and microcassettes. They now want to get updated by going with wav files (they will be on CDs). What do I need to get? I've never had a pedal that plays wav files even when I tested for some different national accounts.
Could someone please recommend a brand of pedal? Is it something that plugs into the USB port? Thank you in advance for any advice.

Yes, it definitely matters which foot pedal you use. I'm in a situation where I need to replace my USB foot pedal and have found that there is NONE that is interchangeable with my software. I love my software but do not like my pedal so I need to decide which direction to go. Anyway, the software has to be compatible with the type of files you are transcribing from, i.e. .wav, .dss, .msv, etc. Be careful though. Even though it says it is compatible it may not be. I have the Sony FS-85USB which only works with Sony's Digital Voice Editor (MSV files). Other software says it is compatible with MSV but not those. ONLY the FS-85USB pedal works. If your company doesn't provide your kit for you make sure you research it real well and ask a lot of questions.

a kind word and encouragement. I know there are others much worse off and I know too I'll get through this. This time of year has always been tough for me since my parents died and I've really been working on putting on a happy face for my family despite how I feel, but just couldn't do it today.

As the sole Editor for 20+ MTs I can tell you your editor is being very thorough. Do not make assumptions. Those other MTs may not be following instructions either. You are responsible for your own work, not theirs. Take this QA and run with it, learn from it, put it in your autotext for goodness sake and let it do the work for you! I tell my MTs what the client wants the client gets...No two accounts will ever be the exact same. Right now our account wants ever single drug capitalized (generic or not)...yes that goes against the BOS, but they our paying us to provide a service and we shall provide that service according to their terms set out in their guidelines. Do not take this personally. If the QA does not do their job, how do you expect to do yours?

I had problems tyring to defend that I should have customer support if I did such a thing. They will help you load XP but they will not give you any customer support afterwards, I never loaded with XP but after telling them the sales person gave me the wrong info (I wanted to make sure I could still use this computer if a company was still with windows XP and the sales person said no problem) This was last summer. After fighting tooth and nail they credited my account. Tell them you want it for a business so that way you get someone who knows what they are talking about, hopefully.

When I was a C-phone user, I had to buy a couple replacements. It was too costly to have a repairperson repair them, and instead it was best to throw it out and buy a new one. It used to be we could open them up and clean the CONTACTS.
There are different types of USB pedals
There is Olympus, VEC, Infinity, many, many. Look at the bottom of your pedal to get the code. If it is an Infinity, you will see something like IN-USB1, or IN9B (for 9 pin) or IN-DVIUSB. All the Infinity foot pedals work with ExpressScribe EXCEPT the DVI because it is a higher technology than is compatable with ES. Run the foot control wizard on ExpressScribe to help it locate the foot pedal and recognize it so you can use it. You may have to try all the COM ports on the wizard before you hit the right COM port and the foot pedal is recognized. My Infinity foot pedal USB1 is recognized in ES as the _VEC_ if that helps you.
I have had to do the hand control thing and it is very frustrating and can make the test take 4 times longer than with a foot pedal.

If the footpedal setup wizard doesn't work it may be that your 9 pin port card has been setup to do other things (maybe games?). You need to get the driver for the card (perhaps the driver CD is lying around somewhere) or get a nerd to update the card's driver. Port settings can also be a problem. Sometimes it's just easier to switch to a USB footpedal!
You could also try Port 1, 2 etc in the settings, running through the wizard each time and see if that helps on one or the other of them. Another possibility is mechancal, the cable/socket may be damaged.

I have two Infinity foot pedals and just ordered a new one recently for my laptop, a USB from Jay Vance (who posts on another MT Forum).
