Frustrated with line counts
I just started with a national a few weeks ago. I am struggling to get my line counts plus get used to the different dictators. It is a large account but I do find the dictation interesting. I also have a part-time job typing for a small company. There are a lot of ESL with the national, but not all are that bad. I am not sure if I went with the right company or not. I had researched for quite a while and found this national to be very flexible, which is what I needed for now. I just would like to know if any others have had the same experience and how long it took to get better and get a decent line count. The people at the company so far are great to deal with, but I am just wondering if after a while it will really get any better as far as pay, etc. Any suggestions appreciated.

This is my own personal opinion, but I do believe that God gave men and women specific roles, both equal in value, neither less in importance. Had I married a man who would have been content in his God given role as provider and allowed me to perform mine as a mother and homemaker, I know I would have been a much happier, content individual. I'm 100% certain that my C-spine wouldn't be in the degenerative condition it's in (I see a pain management specialist on Tuesday) due to 17 years of transcription. Instead, I have had to work everyday, have one child instead of the 2 or 3 I craved, have dealt with depression and have even been in counseling.
Look at kids today. Mom's leaving their children to be raised by strangers (IMO) has been one of the major downfalls of western civilization. God had a plan. We changed it and now we are paying the price in our children.
anyone grind their teeth?
I've done it for so long I know have extra growth of bone on upper and lower buccal mucosa. It looks unsightly, and I'm going to try to find an oral surgeon who can remove this. I'm also constantly burning it with food because it naturally drops there. I'm seeing a dentist to finally get fitted with a mouth piece, but I have my doubts about stopping the grinding! I take muscle relaxers, and Xanax, massage my jaws with warm clothes, and also sleep on a heating pad (burned myself a few weeks ago and woke up with welts and blisters) I just dont see an end to this. Anyone at all have success in stopping grinding??

I am a former dental assistant. I worked for a dentist for seven years, and we made sure that people knew that nerve damage could occur. I have seen a couple of these cases, and they all regained the feeling eventually. As far as time frame, unfortunately everyone is different.

I noticed that during the initial audition. They are getting better, he has been having dental work done for at least the last two shows. He has such a nice voice, I am sure before the grand finale his teeth will look real nice.
A word about teeth--sm
keep your natural teeth for as long as you possibly can. swallow your fears about dentists and take care of what you have. Those pretty white straight dentures are torture chambers in disquise, and you will never again enjoy corn on the cob or dill pickels because when you try to bite them with dentures, they come loose. Your gums shrink over time and they never quite fit right, even the expensive jobs! It is just not worth it! Your own teeth can never be replaced by plastic and yours can be pretty and white too. These are just my experiences and thoughts. ks
Wisdom teeth (sm)
I'm not sure about ulcers becoming cancerous, although I would think so. But wisdom teeth can become a chronic problem with infection, bite problems, etc. Go to an oral surgeon.He can put you under and you won't even know it's happening. The next thing you know you'll be in the recovery area and it will be all over.

I stop the coffee 4 hours into my shift, it didn't help. Now, I fix a mug of ice water, have snacks similar to what has been suggested. I like salty snacks. I wash my face and brush my teeth, and it usually gets me through my shift.
wisdom teeth question
My 20 year old daughter had her wisdom teeth out on Friday. She went to have the stitches out and told the dentist that she has no feeling in part of her lip. The dentist says it is rare but it may never come back. He said that you can go to Boston or New York to reconnect the nerve which is a lengthy process and has to be done in 2 months. She is in college (a little hard to do). I keep telling her to give it more time, it has only been 5 days maybe it will get better. She is hysterical over this. Has anyone else run into this with wisdom teeth.
Ant bait
Raid has an ant bait that is pretty good. It looks like a roach motel and you can put it on the counter, etc. Also you have to really scrub with bleach or a product like it. The ants actually leave a chemical trail behind them so their fellow minions can follow their trail. To really get rid of them you have to obliterate the trail.
Teeth can be changed. That voice is simply the best!

OSI bait and switch
I probably would have stayed with OSi but they did the same to me. I got the contract signed it with the accounts they were assigning me. Started working noone ever gave me the list of people in my group so I could chat with someone when I needed help etc., supervisor would never follow through with promises, was given accounts I had no information for and was not even in my contract. BREACH OF CONTRACT on their part. Keep looking there are some out there.

I hear you loud and clear. My take on this current trend is that when you state what you want (job types) you are showing weakness for what you don't want (unfamiliar ground). Employment is tight now so they want people that say "bring it all on as I have no favorites. I like the variety and challenge of new territory instead of same old, same old.
They are favoring people who can step up to the plate without whining and do it all and with a smile. They are sick of catering to some MTs who cherry pick their way to a paycheck and leave their left overs for whomever.
So bite the bullet and start learning something new and get good at it. If you don't someone else will come along and only be too happy to do it for you.
Yea, it's a little bit of a heads up I would say. It's happening across the boards now. You are not alone.

I'm fortunate in that I live in a small town and my vet is very good and very reasonable. Doesn't try to persuade you to have anything extra done but will do things if you want them done.
Terro bait traps
Terro is the best thing I have used indoors. It is especially good in places like the kitchen because I don't like to spray in there. We found the fireants coming in around the kitchen window one night a few weeks ago and I put some out, the next morning the ants were all dead. Just to be sure we found their nest outside just under the window and sprinkled it with Orthen powder.

I don't mean to sound unkind, but if you are working for an MTSO, then no account belongs to you. The accounts you transcribe for belong to the MTSO and not you the transcriptionist. The only time an account belongs to you is if you contract the physician him or herself and give your rates. Once in a while you'll find a physician or facility to employee you as an MT, but they usually expect you to work on-site. Good luck in your endeavors.
Most of the time, an MTSO is not out for the MT, but for the client and making money for themselves. They don't really concern themselves too much with whether the MT can make any money or not. It's just not high on their list.
Bait and Switch, tired of it!
Oh, I just had to come here and vent. So, thanks in advance for listening!
I have had 1 employee job and 2 IC jobs since Christmas-time and have been bait and switched up and down in all 3! Applied for certain types of work type, certain types of benefits (the employee job), and got zip. Then, went IC and again, applied for certain work types, certain accounts, hired and promised the world, and then never ever got the work types, instead got all the ESL and all the resident's ESL discharge summaries and that is it.
What is the deal? These places think that when we don't get the benefits promised, the paycheck promised, the work promised (I will do all work types mind you and am very flexible, just hired for certain kinds of work and then only put on the very worst ESL discharges at all jobs), we will be broken down because we are afraid of not having a job, or not having the ability to get another?
I am truly burnt out at this. I worked for years at one hospital, and when they cut incentive and sent work to outsource, since I have been in the world of MTSOs, bait and switch up and down. And this includes the very well thought of and highly rated companies here from last fall (you probably can guess the ones).
Of course, perhaps they think the MT needs to be quiet and be happy to have a job (which by the way, all 3 ran out of work and slim pickings recently) since everything is going to India. Is this some kind of scare tactic? Shut up and put up? Really. I am interviewing as an employee again, and hoping to stay because I just cannot take this bait and switch, no promises kept, demeaning treatment anymore... Thanks again for listening, and hope there are people on here who do not have the same sob story, who actually get the pay, benefits and work types they were hired for and promised! Have a nice day.

Evil Co-Worker
Anyone else have an evil co-worker or two? I work at home but there's always one that still manages to find me. I would ilke to slap this current one if I could reach her through my computer. She thinks she's my supervisor. I try to be respectful and polite, but that's not working. All my other co-workers are wonderful. I can't find anything in the company handbook about slapping not being appropriate, so that's my next plan of action. I just have to figure out a way to do that through cyberspace.

I agree! Give her enough rope and evenutally she will hang herself. You are so not alone. I had to deal with one of these types for nearly 2 years. I would be trying to get my work done on my account and her IMs were poping up left and right. I even had my "Busy Working" sign up! She never did her work -- waited until the last minute. Most times I ended up doing her share because of it. Unfortunately, no one in charge seemed to notice or just did not care since I was picking up what she lacked. The money was good because I was getting a ton of extra lines, but it was killing me and destroying my marriage. She would go on and on about her family all the time. Like I cared! Her kids were sick every other day. She always had an excuse why she didn't get her work done. The kicker? Once I had to do her work last minute about an hour or so before it was all due -- I am pounding away on my keyboard she Knows I am doing her work! The IMs pop up telling me how she is helping her sister write a resume! Hello! She should have been doing her own work or at the very least leaving me alone so I could do it for her. I would type my buttock off to have an evening free -- guess what? She would suddenly have some sort of problem as soon as she saw my work was finished and she would then be unable to do her own. Guess what came next? Yep -- I got stuck working while she got away with it. I swear it was like she was stalking me on-line. Don't know how she knew, but seemed like the second I got up to use the bathroom or went to the kitchen for a soda the IMs would bing. Just the memories still drive me crazy. I can relate. It's not a fun club to belong to.

How darn hard it is to quit. I have tried everything. Patches, gum, Wellbutrin, Zyban, cold turkey, etc.
Don't buy them by the pack anymore. We (my husband and I) roll our own. Buy a can of tobacco and have a little machine and thought that would deter us, but noooooooooo. $8 a week compared to over $8 a DAY.
We do keep trying so there is hope that someday, hopefully within the next 6 months, we can say see ya! Yeah right.

Taking the evil out of the world is one thing.
Sending a teenager (18) just out of high school to a country with acknowledged lower drinking age (18) is perhaps contributing to the vulnerability and adding a little evil into that life teens life. No one thinks straight when they are drinking. New drinkers + naive teens equals disaster. Mix in a foreign country with different customs and laws. What were these parents thinking?

I'm trying but I'm getting really frustrated!
I know work slows down but they should at least have a backup account to give me so I can get SOME work. I'm going to give it a few more weeks, but if this is any indication of how they do business, I really don't think it's going to work out. I think they are just over hiring to get the TAT quick.
Very frustrated
Does the QA (not the people, just the QA itself) make anyone else feel inadequate?? I try and try to do a good job, consider myself to be good at it, have been told by numerous doctors and employers that I do a great job, but somehow, I just can't seem to cut it working for a small MTSO. For 30 years, I've transcribed things by what is correct. Now working for a "verbatim" account, I can't even make a sentence correction to read better without it coming back. Some of this is truly ridiculous. It comes back whether it changes the meaning or not. I have been trained to "fix" things, but now trying to "undo" 30 years of training is hard. It's hard to type what you know is incorrect. How are some of the ESLs every suppose to learn it right, if we constantly type what they say wrong? Everything from wrong pronunciations to grammatical errors?? And it is NOT just ESLs. It's Americans who should know proper English and grammar. I think this job is easier for someone just starting out to learn it this way, rather than trying to change. I guess you CAN'T teach a dog new tricks... this ole dog, anyway!
Frustrated
Does anyone make money transcribing/editing???? What If so, how, where do you work. Maybe I have not found my niche. I was hoping this would be it. What companies are good? I spent two years going to school and have been transcribing for 2 years and editing for almost a year. I prefer to be an IC and have had many, many people tell me they want to become a Transcriptionist and work from home. I tell them don't bother it is not worth the time and lack of money. I am probably just too slow. The problem is that I really enjoy doing this and love the freedom and working from home. So, I plug away. I am ready to quit and just scrapbook and quilt. Forget work.
