I have it but it is slow too. Probably as slow as satellite. It is supposed to be DSL speed, but I dont think it is. I have never had DSL to know for sure. It is faster than dial up but it is slower than cable. I am able to work, but you can forget about fast downloads. Small jobs are fine. The only thing that takes so long is the actual sending/receiving dictation.

I was just at the hospital Friday evening attending a death, and one of the family members said, "Oh, we can't use the cell phones," and a nurse said, "Sure you can. It's okay." Things have changed. There may be some places in a hospital where they are still not allowed, but they are becoming accepted in more and more parts of the hospitals.

The candidates running in our state (LA) are calling cell phones. It was on the news a little bit ago that the phone numbers are the ones that were wrote on the voter registration and if you don't want the calls, to write the voter registrar.

It seems to mean i read it was against the HIPAA (?) for doctors to dictate on cell phones. I've heard stories, though, of many doctors who do. What about dictating from home--are they taking medical records at home to do this. Seems like that is a violation, too. But who is going to say anything to doctors about diddly squat stuff like rules or slowing down a little so we can understand what the heck you are saying?

on ice while dictating, or I have a few suggestions where to keep it. My nerves aren't frazzled enough with this industry, now we have these clowns keep their cell phones ON while dictating. This morning I had to sit through dictation from one of the worst, and he knows it, all the while having his shrill, loud cell phone ringing in my ear. I know they have to stay available as physicians, but what's wrong with voice mail, text messaging, until he/she is able to take the call in an appropriate, courteous manner. No, they have to let it keep ringing. My ears are still buzzing.

No cell phones allowed in hospitals. Nothing new. I recently saw a newscast on cell phones in hospitals and what they can do. Turn off respirators, mess with EKG readings, mess with infusion pumps, etc. Not only should cell phones not be used in hospitals but they should be turned off. I can't tell you how many times a day my computer jumps around when I have my cell phone anywhere close by. If this is so, I come doctors carry cell phones around the hospital. I have a dictator that constantly gets phone calls and when we went to a new dictating system, I had to shut him down because if it rang when he was dictating, well, he had to redictate because nothing was there. My son was once having a heart procedure done and while we were in the waiting room a lady was on her cell phone. A nurse noticed her and told her she had to turn it off, she kept talking and he waited until she was off. As soon as he was out of sight, she got back on. I almost got up and told her myself to get off because she was risking my son's life!

Nope, it is their cell phones, beepers, etc.
I agree with the poster because when they go off you can tell they are being reached for and checked to see who is calling as the dictator usually pausing and trying to find their words while still trying to check just who that is. They sit cell phones and beepers so close to the dictating units that you have screeches going off throughout the dictations. Hard on your ears. Sometimes I have to hold away and then I cannot type what is being said, oh well.
Also got rid of our house phone because we all had cell phones and that saves me about 75.00 a month

If you would ever hear the quality of some of the dictation I heard on cell phones, buses, trains,
cars, etc. I dont care how good you are you cant do this work without blanks nor can QA. Some of them dictate with millions of people talking and laughing behind them and they are unable to be heard. PERIOD. No amount of skill and excellence will get you out of sending this stuff back without going to QA.
I agree. I work for an exceptionally difficult university and those people dictate on cell phones in
trains, in cars, everywhere and they cut out and they just have an exceptional amount of residents dictating on anything imaginable. My blanks are never for words I dont know they are for crappy dictators or those that simply dont know what they are talking about.

I haven't heard of any other way to get wireless broadband other than through the cell phone companies.
Does anyone use laptop & cell phone/Internet Card for work?
I am not real computer literate but am wondering if I couldn't get unlimited Internet with a cell phone plan and use that for my on-line job/Internet connection exclusively. I have found plans for around $70/month.
If so, I was thinking too I could possibly give up my land line phone, Callwave, my dial-up ISP (as that is all we have available where live) and actually save a little money by doing so. I don't make/receive a lot of land line calls and I have a TracFone cell phone that I don't use much now. I get excellent reception with that where I live. We have a huge tower within walking distance of where I live but we live out in the "sticks". :D I know my connection would be dependent on the reception where I live and the cell phone service I would use. I am not sure which one truly has the best coverage and/or who may be using the tower by our home but TracFone apparently does. :)

Wireless aircard for laptop - sm
Anyone ever use a wireless aircard for their laptop while transcribing away from home? I am in the process of acquiring a laptop and checking into this form of obtaining Internet access for use this summer. I'm totally confused after speaking to the wireless aircard company. Apparently it is a monthly fee, but not for "per minute" use. I was told that the fee would cover "5 GB or 5 KB" not sure what she said - apparently equivalent to downloading 3 movies or 1,000 songs. Does anyone have experience with this and would you tell me if this is feasible for using to work away from home? It would not be everyday, the occasional long weekend, and while I know it depends on how much work I do, what I would like to know is this amount sufficient for my needs? Any help, comments, advice, etc. would be greatly appreciated. (I will also be getting wireless hooked up at home too, but not sure if this works away from home...need words of wisdom on this also). So, anyone out there willing to enlighten me? TIA
Laptop w/ Cingular wireless connection
Hi,
I just bought my first laptop since we are getting ready to move across the USA. I researched into using a PC card that connects to cingular wireless (Or verizon) so that I can connect to internet, E-mail, etc. Kind of like a cell phone.
I was wondering if anyone has used this and how well it works in real life?

Wireless router setup/laptop
You don't say what kind of router your have but your wireless router DOES NOT need to be connected by ethernet cable to your computer--you only need to connect by cable when you initially install the router software. Next, if your router has WEP or WAP security enabled, your laptop wireless will not be able to just connect automatically. Copy your router settings from your main computer (the one you installed the router software to) onto a USB flash drive if you have one and load those settings on your laptop.
The easiest way to set up your network if you have Windows XP is to go to control panel, then go to the Wireless Network Setup Wizard. It will prompt your on how to set up a secure wireless network if your router has it and how to add other computers to your wireless network. It is very easy if you have a USB flash drive--otherwise you'll have to manually add in the settings. Good luck!!
I have all kids' computers and laptop on wireless router.
My work computer is directly wired into the router and is kept out of the wireless network for security reasons. Make sure if you do install a wireless network that you make it secure!

you could work anywhere. Being wireless has great benefits, say if you are in the hospital, dying, why you could make a few bucks to pay for the funeral.
To all of you Escriptionist out there...Laptop question. Have any of you found a laptop that you can
thing. I tried one of those adapter that goes from the 9-pin to the USB but when I plugged in the USB my foot pedal did not work right. I know supposedly there is a help section on the escription website that says the adapter may work and how to make them compatible etc but it never worked for me. Has any of you find a solution or a laptop that this foot pedal with work with. I'd like to work while traveling and get a laptop but it never worked on my old one. Ideas??
C-phones
Are C-phones worth the trouble and expense of getting one? I work for a small company and now the docs want to go back to them! I thought they were rather obsolete. Also, what kind of cost is involved in unlimited long distance plus do you have to have a separate phone line for these?

Aren't C-phones a little outdated or it is just my imagination? I was working on a contingent basis for a wonderful small company but now the owner says the docs like the C-phone better and have switched from that after using the voice-activated equipment for awhile. I enjoyed the work but not the expense of purchasing outdated equipment that I doubt I would use anywhere else. So for now, I have virtually NO work

Got them at Radio Shack. I got the less expensive ones, and am sorry I didn't get the fancier, more expensive ones. I think they would be worth it. Will be getting some better ones later.

I have no idea, honestly. I just don't like wearing a "leash," as well. Also, the ones MQ sent are about 10 feet long.
I know when I see teenagers blasting their music directly into their ears, it not only aggravates me because I can hear it, but it makes me think they'll probably become deaf or hard-of-hearing at an early age.

I also have C-phone and hate the chinset ear phones. They dig into my ears, and give me a headache. I got on ebay and searched on C-phone. I ran across a pair of ear buds (like an MP3 player has) that are 2-prong, and only for the Dictaphone system. Very excited to get them!

C-phones
A C-phone is a telephone with a foot pedal where you pick up your dictation. You dial into a number given by your employer/hospital. Used C-phones can run 100-150.00, and new ones are around 700.00-900.00. Try EBay, as I believe they have them under medical transcription. I have used one for years and really like it. Quality of the dictation is usually perfect.
What ear phones do you use?
I noticed a huge difference in my ability to hear when I switched from regular "transcription" ear phones to a really good quality Bose stereo headphone. It was a $$ investment, to be sure, but I figured it was worth it since it's tax deductible and I hear more without having to leave as many blanks.

phones through router
I have Vonage (see above) and I have a C-phone connected to my phone line on the Vonage router box, but I still have regular phone lines connecting my home phone, so basically 2 different phone numbers, 2 different services.
Head phones
I have never used noise reduction head phones, but the best head phones I have ever used are the ones that came with the Olympus 4000 transcription system. You can buy the head phones separately. I think they are about $50. This is a lot, but versus the others I have bought in the past (around $25) there is simply no comparison. I also use them to listen to music on my computer. They are great! I have a Soundblaster card on one computer, but even on my other computer the sound is much better than with regular head phones.

Think I'd better get a laptap in the future! Sitting outside typing sounds wonderful but since I am only doing this on a contingent basis, guess I'll stick with my big old computer. Thanks for your input!
interpreter phones in the ER
How does that work in the ER when they need an interpreter for a patient? I'm thinking there are on-call interpreters (or translators) for specific languages but I'm curious if anyone knows anything about this.

I think you should reconsider that. I believe you could be sued for transmitting HIPAA protected information over cell phones. There is no way to encrypt it. The MDs who dictate on cell phones should all be suspended for a month, as far as I'm concerned.
fax to cell #
Anyone know if there is way to receive a fax to a cell phone? I do not have a landline and have a client that wants to fax. Can they fax to a cell # and then I download to my computer and print?
Look for companies that still use C-phones or similar.
Then you'll most likely need unlimited long distance, but dial-up won't matter.

I don't mean companies that you work for, but some independent company that you could rent one from. I had one for a long time, but then the company I work for went to wav files, and foolishly, I got rid of my C-phone. Now I have an opportunity at another company that requires a C-phone, but they don't supply them or rent them. Before buying something and then finding out the company stinks, I thought it would be nice to rent one. Maybe this is a farfetched idea, but thought I'd ask.

I have a pay as you go cell phone
I got one for emergencies only that I pay as I go. There are several different kinds out there, you just have to keep your eyes open and watch what you get and for what price. I got mine at Radio Shack and re-up my minutes every other month for $30. They have discontinued that particular program for new people though. You can get Trac (sp) phones at places like K-Mart, Wal-Mart, and I think you can buy a year's worth of minutes on that one for about $99. Keep an eye on commercials, too. I saw one on MSNBC yesterday that I had never seen before.

If you are in a place where you cannot get a cell
phone signal, you will not be able to get an Air card signal. I travel quite frequently and you always have to have a backup plan. You need to have dial-up as a possibility or limit where you stay based on where you know you can get WiFi or use an air card. Sprint is supposed to have more service with their air card than Verizon, but I haven't used either so I can't say for sure. If you go to their website you should be able to find a map of their service area.
Getting internet access depends on how you will be traveling and where you are staying. If you are staying in a hotel, most of them have WiFi available, either free or for $$. You can check the websites and find if they do or not.
If you are going to be traveling/living in an RV lots of campgrounds now have some form of hook-up. Many are now getting WiFi, though most of them still charge for it. If you get a campground directory this info will be in there so you can plan your trip, though it is always good to call to verify.
Everywhere you go know the Panera Bread locations. They have free WiFi. I've had to use them on occasion, though I always purchase at least a cup of coffee, it not a meal. Starbucks has WiFi, but at least in my area you have to pay for it.
If you are on the road and you see a hotel advertising free WiFi you may be able to pick up a signal in their parking lot.
If having a signal is an absolute must and you'd like to go to out of the way places look into satellite. It can be pricey and the signal is not reliable, but as long as you can get a clear view of the southern sky you can get a signal. If you travel often, instead of staying in one place for a length of time a satellite is a pain, unless you spend upwards of $5,000 and get one that mounts on the top of an RV/truck.
Unless you only use your cell phone
and internet for work, you cannot take a full deduction, only a percentage.

I used one that belonged to a family member and they are pretty fast and reliable. But, when I called to try and get one, because of my "not so good" credit, they wanted like a $700 deposit.
Also, I am afraid if I go over the allowable amount....as I tend do a Lot of movies on my computer.
I will go with the Satellite, people in the area do not have problems with it, I will just have dial up for backup when the clouds do come in. LOL....
I am not going to worry myself over it much longer.....I tend to slowly wean away from MT once I move anyway. :)
