We talk about experienced or seasoned MTs, but when you think about that, those terms are very difficult to define. One MT's 10 years is not the same as another. Recruiters see this clearly on resumes, but we don't post those here.
I have been an MT for 15 years. I do acute care only. I am a Cardio Queen and that is my specialty. What do I make a line? 8.5 cents. That 8.5 cents gets my company 99% or better accuracy, at least 1500 lines in an 8-hour shift and I am there during a set shift day in and day out.
I have a friend who has 1/3 of my experience (5 years). She can do 2 clinic only specialties (rheumatology and neurology). She can do about 6000 lines every 2 weeks and will put in about 6 to 8 hours a day to get that much done. She REFUSES to work for less than 9 cpl because she has *paid her dues* but she is a far less qualified MT than I am, given that the only specialty I have NOT transcribed is pathology. The result is that she is often out of work due to being let go because she really cannot deliver and then has a hard time getting another situation because she grandstands on money issues.
When so many people come in here claiming to see 7 cpl or less on offer, I think 8 cents is good enough. If you have steady work all the better. At least you have not been outsourced to India or taken up entirely by VR. You have work.
Once when I asked for a raise at my last company, I was told that if I wanted more money, I should type more. I decided to work more on working smart, not hard and made a lot more money with that tactic.
