legitimate companies that hire for permanant at-home jobs. Most require you to train in-house before going home. The only legitimate big company I know of that has at-home workers is Unibase in Sandy, Utah (a suburb of Salt Lake City). It's more 10-key than typing though, or at least it used to be.
There are opportunities for freelance work, but you would want to go with one of the websites that verifies the employers ability to pay before they post their jobs. Most of the freelance websites require you to become a member of their site, since they have to verify the employers they post jobs from. Freelance work certainly won't be steady income and you'll need samples of work you've done, and/or really strong references to get in the door. There is not a lot of freelance "data entry" out there, but there is a lot of copywriting, proofreading, internet research, etc. I've never seen a legitimate ad for "online surveys" though and you'll notice that those clowns want you to pay them! That is not a good sign. Elance.com will let you view current offerings for free, but you do have to become a member of Elance before you can bid on a job. They have different levels of membership, but you can have a basic membership for free.
