There is no contract besides on saying to say for six months. I have been there for almost 1 1/2 years. If I wanted to give notice, what is usual for doing so? Is it 1 week, 2 weeks....

Please allow me to vent here. I was the lead on 2 accounts at one of the nationals that is spoken of highly on this board. I gave my notice. I also agreed to train 3 people on both of my accounts before I left. I got very few lines my last week because I was busy training, answering questions, filling in blanks, etc. The company thanked me when I left and told me they would reimburse me for the training I provided. I sent an email to the head of transcription and told her how many hours I spent training.
Well, I just got my last paycheck for my last week of work. I did not do many lines that last week because I was busy training people. There was no training time on my final paycheck, and the total net check was $67.
Does it pay to be professional and help the company out as you are leaving - I tihnk not!! While the door is always open to this company, I will never go back after this slap in the face. I should have just walked off the job for all the thanks I got.
You give your notice TODAY ... OR ...
you just pack up the computer TODAY, call your supervisor TODAY and tell her you quit TODAY.
That is how you get out of this "screwy place".

You should always give at least two week's notice!!
explain to them that this "is not your cup of tea". If you're looking for another job, they may tell you you don't have to work two more weeks. I once gave a four week's notice because I KNEW it would be a huge strain on the small company I worked for. Good luck!!
ICs, how much notice do you give for vacation
If you are an IC for an MTSO, how much notice do you give for personal days, vacation days, etc.? This is not stated in my contract with my MTSO, and I do not think that the owner is extremely particular about these kinds of things, but I do want to be courteous. What is the standard? Thank you.

Never give anyone more information than is absolutely required in any situation. You owe them no explanation, either legally or morally.

dump you on the spot. Consider how long you want to keep the job, then tell them then, last minute.
I would give minimum of 2 weeks' notice
and would not want to burn any bridges so would let them know I would be willing to work a little after that if they got in a pinch but would not take the usual amount and only in an emergency type situation. Have been in this biz long enough not to burn any bridges and keep all contacts if possible - you NEVER EVER know when you might need work again. Good luck!
Yeppers, it is polite if they do give you notice...
but it not legally required unless you have it contained in a contract somewhere.
Just give the customary 2 week notice.

I just think it is tacky to not give notice even though you feel they have been worse than tacky to you. Professional behavior makes you look good and feel good. Feel free to flame me to a crisp!
You can give 2 weeks notice, but be ready to leave right then if they suggest it.

It's kind of bland, most people don't like the texture....
I usually marinate it in soy sauce and spices, then coat it in wheat germ or sesame seeds. Fry in extra virgin olive oil for about a half minute on each side then add to stir fry veggies. I really admire people that can make that kind of money
but knowing the hours she must work, and the days she must put in (probably all week plus the weekend), that's just not for me. Money isn't everything and I'd rather make my $40,000 and have my weekends free and work my 8 hours, five days a week and be done. Again, this is just me. Now if I could make that money working normal hours, I'd be happy. (I can dream can't I?)

that has kept my ENTIRE family from the church. We had neighbors who would just look down while walking to their car on their way to church. My mom would always frantically wave and they would just look terrified! She is so harmless. She really is. I don't deny the other posters above that there is something wrong with her, but she's always lived life to the fullest.
If you pray, remember Ann. She had major surgery today for tumors in her lymph nodes. This may be cancer coming back. Biopsies will return in a week. We are all so anxious. I wish I could be there for her. It breaks my heart. She lives over 2,000 miles away. I am her middle daughter. She has no one up there but my dad who just called and said she was in recovery with drains sticking out of her body. I just sent 2 bouquets of flowers via the internet which I know she will love (one from me and one from sis).....Thanks for your kind words towards my mom who really does love everyone!! She just has a "funny" way of showing it.
I know some people don't like to give money, but if everyone gave
money and they were wise with it, they would have their fairy tale wedding sooner maybe. Maybe she could list things she wanted for her big wedding like her gown and her flowers and you could get a gift certificate from there and then they wouldn't have spent the $$ on something else.

Give notice face to face and (sm)
briefly explain the circumstances. In the same conversation ask if it's ok to use the company as a reference and possibly provide a "To Whom It May Concern" letter of recommendation. Then follow up with a brief letter. A good reference goes a long way, even as an IC!
Give the SH people a chance to fix it before you spend more money.

What I think is so sad is that people may give up good jobs to go there to find out these things all
to late. The newbies can learn and use MQ and move on which they do but of course the clients suffer then with all the people learning on them but this is what MQ causes and when they lose clients with poor quality or people that just throw out work then they caused their own problems. You cant keep good MTs with no work I dont care what incentives you offer because they mean nothing with no work ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. I wish people would understand that when MQ hires them.

I understand your frustration. I think you just need to sit down and have a talk with your employer. Find out exactly what they want your status to be. As an employee, yes they do have the right to dictate your hours, where you work, etc., but they do not have the right to jerk you around. If they want you to work at home, then they need to provide for that, not you! Anyone who says otherwise is wrong! In any industry, if a company wants you to commute, they pay for gas/mileage. If they want you to have a cell phone/pager, they either pay for it, or they provide an allowance for it. If they want you to work at home, they provide equipment. It sounds to me like they want way too much and are giving very little. Just because a person/company is the employer, it does not give them the right to treat people like dirt, sending them on wild goose chases, interfering with their life, schedule, expenses, etc. I am sorry you have received such critical and insensitive comments. content to just get by, you by default become a part of a group. "people" have decided to group trailer people as trash. that is because there are enough people in that group to earn the title and even if you aren't trash, you are categorized by others. did i think i was trash in lower class neighborhood surrounded by people who drank and fought all weekend? no but i knew i wasn't staying and did not try to pretend that all the fools in the neighborhood were just nice folks who ended up where they were because high horse snobs deemed their neighborhood low class. people for the most part live exactly where they belong because they don't want to educate themselves, they don't mind "trash" around them and they don't want to be bothered trying just a bit hard to extract themselves from that world. they justify everything to themselves i guess saying everyone who doesn't like their lifestyle is a snob and the comedians (Jeff Foxworthy/Chris Rock, etc) who make fun of them are just ill-informed.
As for me, I fought hard to get out and don't even want to look back. It amazes me people stay for generations.

i have been through some rough times lately and had to apply for some help. there are signs, big signs, all over our offices saying "YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE LEGAL TO GET HELP". so we and our government do give them our benefits whether they are legal here or not. now that is messed up. i am helping to support them so they can take away my jobs and i can't even support my kids and yes i get benefits, wow $75 a month in food stamps which lasts not even a week in a household of 6. don't get me wrong, i am thankful for any help at the moment, but i get penalized for trying to work my tail off and still can't survive.
there was recently an article in our local newspaper where one of our local school districts tried to charge $1000 a year for each illegal student enrolled. it was bulked and the illegals got a lawyer to sue for discrimination. the school district merely stated that they had to HIRE extra teachers that could speak the foreign language just to teach these children and were trying to offset some of the expenses. ridicilous!! so again our taxpayers money is paying to educate illegals as well.

every time someone says they are struggling with lines that it is automatically assumed that they are "messing around on the internet" or doing anything other than working. The problem could not possibly be a difficult account or anything reasonable. I know yesterday, on one account, I typed 37 different dictators. The majority of which were residents, who don't know what they want to say and repeatedly says "uh" or "no go back and change that" or ESL doctors speaking broken English. I find it very difficult to adjust to an account where there is no consistency in the dictators. You cannot get familiar with them as you more than likely will not get the same one very often.

Clinic work in my area, SE region, it seems is about .12 gross line or about .16 65-character for what the dr. office pays. Subcontractors from the contract holder recieve between .06 and .09/gross line.
Nationals usually pay .07 to .09 for clinic work on a 65-character line. I think that acute care probably pay would start around .09 or .10 and go up depending on experience, etc.
Also, a lot of them will pay a little more for full-time (a very little).

It depends on what your contract calls for, but if no stipulation then most only give 30 days. That should be more than enough time for them to find someone else.

My contract stated 30 days. I gave a 30-day notice but I did not have any work in my pool after only 3-4 days after giving notice. I would have gladly worked for those 30 days.

These new "changes" take away quite a few characters for us? Not the hyphen thing; that's probably because they are tired of some people not "getting" when to use hyphens and they just said "screw it!" but the i.e., etc., Mr., Mrs., Dr., etc. How dumb does "John H Smith III" look? Throw some punctuation back in there! Although it wouldn't surprise me if the companies are the ones saying that they don't REALLY need all of those periods and commas, after all...
It's just like some new dictionaries; can't spell a word right, change it! (I've read where judgement is becoming more and more acceptable because a lot of people can't seem to drop the e.)

who claim that they are able to do key commands to make speed, so that they are making $20 an hour doing editing, also more than not are trainers in a position where they can pick their own work, knowing which doctors the VR actually does well with... And who have also been with the company itself over 10 years? Basically VR is designed so that the company gets more for the report and the editor/transcriptionist actually gets less. IF they want me to edit again, its only going to be for the same rate as the transcription work pays.
Yup, quit the company I worked for that used it about a month ago and I am still steaming out the ears from it.

Easy for me to say because I'm not in your shoes, but we've probably all been in a position at one time or another where we couldn't wait to move on to greener pastures. Ever notice that most of these platforms/programs that we work on make it very difficult to keep track of lines, view how many lines in a given time period etc...seems that is the last consideration... for us to see how much we make.
