and regulations when they go into the work force? Or will you always be there to keep them away from the "bad guys". I'm not so sure it is fair to your children to not send them to school so that they can learn "from their mistakes" and bad choices. This is how we learn to adapt in our adult life. We learn the hard way and unfortunately not everything is positive.
My children attend public schools. We are all human. We cannot protect our children forever from the "negative influences" in life, so why not subject it to them while they are young so we can prepare them to make better choices when they are older.
My daughter has already stated she does not want to work at home. Good for her. I am applauding her decision to be social and make a difference, which I'm sure she will because of course she wants to be a teacher, and I'm an MT!!!!

If you are an IC nothing has to get ignored. There is a time for kids and a time for work. Get real, it happens!
Why would you take offense? It is the real world and it exists.
It is not meant to be offending to anyone, just an honest statement made by someone. Everyone grew up differently with different values and "prejudices" handed down to them, or "on them", and we as adults see that and try to correct it. Prejudice is learned, and I for one am learning how not to be prejudice!
Some people have no friends in the real world and seem to see
their social circle. Quite sad. They need to get out more.
WE ARE RICH compared to REAL third world nations
like those hit in the tsunami. Do you live with three generations in a dirt floor hut? Are you a farmer, fisherman, or hard laborer? Do our people have malnutrition and low fetal birth weights? Do you worry about where your next meal is coming from? No, we're the fattest nation in the world. We have a lot to be grateful for but people still want more. You can sit there behind your computer screen in your heated house while drinking lemonade and tell us all how poor you are, but I don't believe it for a minute. Your life could be a lot worse.
IMO, in the real world common sense is better to have than a high IQ. nm

I enjoy being alone at home, but I've got one home sick from school already.
One on one with a kid is nice, too.
This summer has been absolutely crazy. I haven't had a moment to myself for three months because all of my kids were home traipsing their friends through the house and yard. My husband switched his work schedule, too, so he's around more than usual. However, I like not having to do two loads of dishes and four loads of laundry a day. There are no toys or clutter dragged out everywhere. I can clean the house first thing in the morning, and it stays clean until everyone gets home at night.
I even got to relax with a cup of coffee and watch TV for half an hour this morning, something I liked for a change instead of cartoons or kids' movies. I signed up for an online class that I've been wanting to take. I can exercise without being interrupted. Yesterday, I went to the mall and spent all my saved up gift cards. I got some clothes, books, bath stuff, and a new coffee mug. My work gets done a lot faster, too. Call me nuts, but I've never had the luxury of being alone in the house for 14 years. It's kinda nice. I love my family with all my heart, but I love having a few hours to myself each week, too.
Except now the cat and dogs have been acting weird since the kids went back to school. They must think that I need someone or something to clean up after and correct behavior on. They're getting into everything and racing around the house behind me.
working at home not a real job?
Have any of you ever experienced someone thinking that because you work at home, you do not have a "real job"? My husband (who is a doctor), seems to think that I have made a mistake by giving up a job as a cancer registrar that paid me 41,000 to do medical transcription. His biggest complaint is the long hours I work trying to make money. I tried to explain to him the learning curve for newbies, but he does not seem to understand. I was taking my MT course during his residency and have wanted to be in this profession for a long time. I will admit, I was not happy about the drop in pay, but I am working towards regaining my salary through increasing production and know that it can be done. It does not seem to matter that he has always had my full support during the beginning of his career, but he cannot seem to do the same for me. He may be right, but the fact is that I love medical transcription and want it to be my career. Who do doctors think they are dictating to? In most cases it is a work at home transcriptionist! I do wish that I could make more money with it, but feel that it will come in time. I love the flexibilty it gives me and I take it very seriously, as my work is directly related to patient care, even though it may not be as hands on as his work is as a doctor.
I would really like some feedback on this, as I am really frustrated by his attitude on my career choice.

I can so sympathize with you! My husband is also a doctor and he can work 15 hour days but let me be working in the evening and it's "you're always on the computer". Yeah, I am, trying to make money since your profession does not offer near what it used to! I absolutely love what I do and I went into this because of HIS hours. I knew that someone needed to be here for our kids (4) and that working a 9-5 job outside the home was not going to be possible. I also gave up my first love/job as a vet tech so that I could do this and be here for the kids. But, it never seems to be enough. If you ever need to vent to me or with me, please do.

I don't believe in putting kids on antidepressants if there's a problem that can be addressed without medication. With his medical problems that you mentioned he's probably having some kids at school harrass him.... and when he gets older he'll be able to select situations to get into that will limit this type of social trauma.
With home schooling growing in popularity you can easily plug him in with others who are around his age and home schooling. Here in Georgia they've even gotten some home schooling football teams and bands up because so many kids are home schooled now to help them feel more like the "regular" kids.
I have a child now that unless the public middle school is significantly cleaned up by the time she gets that age that I'll be home schooling her as there's no way in heck I'm sending her to that pit. A lot of parents in my area home school their middle school kids because the middle school here is horrendous between the crappy teachers who don't give a toot, the bullying and overall poor attitude by a lot of people at that school. Fortunately the demographics in our area are changing so hopefully as more expensive homes are built our county will put more emphasis on cleaning up this particularly bad school. We'll see.

No, usually it's just winding up as all the kids bring home crud from school.
The 4th of July is slow. Christmas is never slow for me.
My sons are born again too and their wives can't leave the house, home school the kids, no tv,
and if my DIL wanted to work, it is out of the question. One of my sons just believes in having babies and having babies. They now have 5. I divorced his dad and apparently his dad taught them this is the American way. I just feel so bad for both my sons' wives. They both are born again and both live their life that way.

Needless to say, I am an old dog here who has been doing this more than 25 years now.

Why do you think public schools are so run down and can't find good teachers? Because the government and people to not put forth the effort or $$$$ to improve the educational system.

My kids have suffered greatly from me working at home with them home. SM
I have been working at home as an MT since my two kids were born. They are now 4 and 5. In the first few years, I had no help whatsoever. Their father was a bum who didnt work or take care of them while I worked. Your children get neglected while you work basically. And babies and young children desperately need your attention while they are home with you.
My kids have so many behavioral problems right now because of their neglect. I would try to set them up with things to occupy themselves, like coloring or a movie, etc.
I finally put them in day care and things have improved, but there are still a lot of issues because of the damage that was done. They still try to seek attention by doing bad things and they dont listen to me because they are so used to me letting them get away with a lot of stuff because I was too busy typing to discipline them in their early years.
If I could do it all over again, I would definitely have put them into day care from the very beginning.
My advice would be to seek PT care for your baby. Maybe you can do some work around her schedule a little when she is home, like when she takes a nap, and then bang out a bunch of work while she is in day care.

Forget "per line." Your take-home pay should be taking home SM
roughly what it was before. If it is not, is it because your current pay rate for editing (which in many companies keeps changing as the VR system is developed) is too low or is it because your talents and skills are more for speed typing than speed editing?
If the first, discuss it with higherups, and go get a new job if you don't get the response you need. My last MTSO was secretly refiguring how production was counted to pay us less. I can accept hard reality, it was the secrecy that burned. Sometimes, though, it's just that the learning curves of individual editors and that of the system aren't in sync, and you end up temporarily making less.
If the second, though, recognize it as soon as possible and change to straight transcription work, in your company or a new one, for as long as you can find it.
As for why we aren't paid more for a higher skill, that's just the way the labor supply ball bounces. Best wishes.

hospital at-home -vs- national at home
I have an interview today with a hospital...work in-house for 3 months, then go home, paid on production. I don't know as of yet what they pay production, so my question is to anyone who works for a hospital at home AND has also worked for a national at home...
Which would be the best to choose? The hospital offers great benefits, but the national I work for now also has benefits, not as good as the hospital, though. Any input would be most appreciated!
We met in high school. My high school sweetheart
introduced us in a discussion over Ford versus Chevy versus Dodge. I used to race my Dodge Coronet with oldstyle 318 V-8 engine against the guys on the back roads and old highways. High school boyfriend had a Chevy truck. DH had a Ford Fairlane and later an AMC Javelin that just made me swoon. We didn't actually start dating until three years later, and my old high school boyfriend was a bit surprised at that since he introduced us.

Welcome to my world...
This explains my summer exactly. My kids have never argued so much. I have three boys and two girls. The girls are the oldest and have been fighting almost daily. We got to the point where we forced them to sit together and hold hands in silence for a certain period of time because we knew they'd hate that at the age of 10 and 9. It actually did work. They don't fight as much as they did a few weeks ago, and when I threaten them with holding hands they stop.

I work 2 part-time positions and feel pretty stretched most of the time. I cannot imagine doing 2 full-time positions.

I have the best job in the world
Have worked hourly for the past decade. Love it. Now at around 30/hr with 9 weeks paid vacation a year. Would not trade it for anything. Nice getting paid when work is slow or when you have "off" days.
It is a whole new world
There are so many more words and medications to deal with but you should pick it up quick, just like any other field. A lot depends on what particular field you are working in. (Breast, heme-malignancies, thoracic, GI, Gu....) If you want I will send you some sites I used when starting and still use.

I agree that oncology is a new world, but it is very interesting and I just love when I have oncolgoy work. The hardest part for me was the radiation drugs, but I have a good website for those. It was about a month before I felt in the zone. :)

I know that we would all like to believe that, but it gets tougher and tougher all the time. I just did a quick search, as I knew that either last night or the night before I had heard or read about our ranking among the 191 or 193 countries included in the WHO ranking. The results I came across put us 37th back in 2000, and that number fell from the 1997 ranking of 24th (I believe it was).
I don't know about you, but I do not consider 37th place the best, nor do I consider best to be a country where a woman dies on the ER floor while a janitor mops around her and both her boyfriend and another person in the ER have to call 911 -- Imagine, having to call 911 from the ER . . . pitiful.

Does a grown woman swallow two loop earrings? Yep. Did reports on a woman (whom I know as I live in a small community) who swallowed two loop earrings and had to have EGD to retrieve them! I have typed plenty of swallowed foreign body reports on children but a grown educated woman?

a significant dent in paycheck if you are paid production.
Just like you, I did the typewriter/correction tape thing. I typed about 50 radiology reports/day back then, and that was considered very high. I was paid hourly, working on-site, had benefits and all that, so it didn't matter if I typed 50 or 10 reports, I got paid the same.
Most of us are now paid production. With word Expanders and spell check, my current average is 125-150 radiology reports/day depending on which one of my accounts I work the most on. As another poster said, when you are typing 90 mph you make typos. If I am paid production, I will not take the time to look up spelling via Google, a dictionary, or whatever or sit here and read over every report I type when there are programs available to do that for you. Time is money when you are on production pay. Our pay has gone down over the years, and keeping production up is the only way to compensate. Without spell check or word expanders, speed slows significantly down as you proof read and double check each report, therefore the paycheck takes a hit.
To say we are 'spoiled' I think is the wrong term. I for one am grateful! Those tools are what we need to make a survivable wage in 2008. In typewriter days, we weren't paying $3+ for gas and oil. A gallon of milk was not $4. It's all relative.
To the OP, there is no way I would take a job without Word Expanders AND a spell check unless it was hourly pay. If they do not provide you with them, see if they will allow you to install your own personal copy. You will offset the cost of that software within a month if you are paid production and you can deduct it on your tax return.

This has been going on for as long as I have been doing this, 10 years now. What is really annoying is when you get some dictators that are consistent, and you get them down pat, they will vanish off the face of the earth. You could try ESR (speech recognition)editing, but it pays real low, and it is very very tedious work, very boring. I can say, I will quit this business all together before I get stuck doing that all day long, which might come sooner than later. Good luck!!

Boy.. do I totally agree with you.. isolation, four walls closing in, stress, big time weight gain.. crappy hours.. neck pain, arm pain, shoulder pain.. I thought I was all alone on this one ... helps to hear I might be in the "norm".. 
Who in the world do you think would do the
point and click work? The physicians? other dictators? I am not worried about transcription because I see it as not going completely away, might have VR but even that has to be edited by people who know what they are doing, example a transcriptionist. Don’t worry about what you cannot control anyway.
