Rename your normal.dot file to something else then restart Word. It will create a new file.

You can either go to File, New to create your own
dictionary; or you can go to File, Open to open one that you've downloaded. There are tons of free dictionaries out there, but it might be best to make your own with your own shortcut naming technique to be able to remember it better.
The full manual is also in the Help file.

Dictionaries and expanders, sm
I have a few questions on dictionaries and expanders. I have been working for MQ for the past two years. I have added a lot of words to the spell checker dictionary, and I have a lot of shortcuts, does anyone know if there is a program that I can use with MS Word that will allow me to import these. The files are .tlx, .aco and .ocx. I am going IC and will be using my own computer. I was just trying to find a program to get set up on (even if I cannot use what I have already saved), that will be the most benefit for me in the future. I also have a laptop, so I would like a program I can use on both computers without having to pay a fortune to do so.
TIA
Help! My dictionaries ae disabled!
I recently upgraded to MS Word Pro and now my dictionaries are disabled. I'm almost positive that I worked in Word after the upgrade and they were fine, but this morning they are gone. When I look (Spelling>Options>Custom Dictionaries) I see my Stedman's listed and also a Custom listed which I think may be the words I have okayed (not really sure if that was there before). They are both checked. The custom was default so I changed Stedman's to default, but still Word is not recognizing any medical terms and is marking them all - good gravy! Hoping someone with a bit more tech expertise than me can help me figure out what could be wrong? TIA!
These are Directories, not dictionaries,

Do you have a favorite on-line dictionary? I'm looking for both medical and non-medical. Thanks.
All you do is on your other computer with your dictionaries....inside
copy whatever you named your SPF file, like I have a main SPF file and another for dictation macros for the account I am on. Just copy them to a flash drive or whatever medium you use to backup your SPF file, plug your flash drive (which is what I use)and then when it comes up on your computer where you need your SPF file, copy it and put it in your ShortHand file. You could have copied your whole Shorthand file and then put it on your new computer or new hard drive (that is what I do because I don't like the new Shorthand versions). Hope I explained this clearly.
If you go to this site they share dictionaries - sm
If you go to productivity talk they have a forum on there where people share their dictionaries. I picked up one for ShortHand on there that was full of drug shortcuts and another for sutures. Not a spell check per say but at least its something.
It's found in a few dictionaries off the onelook.com site. Use it. :) nm

Dumb question, but why are there med dictionaries for each state? nm

3 additional?
Not too bad. I've seen the help wanted postings and wondered about them. I'd love to do the VR but have a bad back and can't sit 8 solid hours.

well, and I was having red flags pop up in my mind as well because on their website www.unitedtran.com, there isn't even a physical address if someone wanted to inquire through an alternate route, they leave no phone numbers to contact, only general email addresses. So, I really appreciate all the input tonight! Thanks!

Not sure about the driving yet. She said she had a computer guy that might can get me set up from home. She wants me to type into her computerized chart instead of just on paper if possible. I have 17 years experience, it's clinic notes for the most part, maybe some letters here and there. I was going to go with 65 count line including spaces and headers. I am in Tennessee in a rural area, just a small doc's office. I
Some additional thoughts SM
I'm curious about what you've decided and agree with Searching's excellent post; but for whoever else is reading, it's inspired me to emphasize a couple of things I'd have liked someone to point out to me.
One, the future of this field is editing, not transcribing, emphasizing a different set of talents and skills. Just what the differences are I don't know as it's not discussed nearly enough, but they're there. Fewer people will handle more reports, getting in and out of them very quickly. Anyone thinking of entering the field should try to assess as quickly as possible whether the abilities to read fast and edit grammar and punctuation on the fly are there. Don't transcribe for two years before finding out.
Second, some are going to disagree with me, no doubt, but school is much, much less valuable than the same weeks spent actually working full-time. This is definitely one of those learn-by-doing jobs, so examine why you're going to school. If it's to get a credential to show an employer you're ready to start learning, okay, just definitely don't turn down a chance to actually spend hours with headphones and a keyboard for it. Buy a set of med terminology flashcards.
Regarding what else one might look to school for, though, trainees should bring a pretty good understanding of grammar and punctuation to the table with them and not need school for that. If more than a quick brush-up of basic "rules" is needed, that could be an warning sign that talents lie elsewhere. Or maybe not, but be aware. Similarly, not reading very much could be another since reading imprints written language patterns in a way spoken language doesn't.
Last, more and more people are paid by production, not the hour. $0.0425 per line edited, or whatever. Do 300 lines per hour for a total of 3 hours actually spent working, be prepared to gross $38 that day. Do 850 lines per hour for 8 hours, gross $290. So although being a demon typist will always be extremely valuable, also be prepared to use every advantage technology offers to get as fast as possible. Get a word Expander and use it. A lot. Learn to write macros. And so on. Best wishes.
What the other reasons might be for some people tearing their hair out over low pay and others feeling basically satisfied with their incomes I also don't know, but the ones mentioned are very important.
Once again --- IC taxes - YOU only pay 7.5% SS additional
The only ADDITIONAL taxes you pay is the 7.5 for the SS tax. When you are an employee all OTHER taxes are withheld by your employer. As an IC you control the withholding of your taxes as you are the employer. You can find many deductions that you can take as an IC to make up that extra 7.5%. It just makes my teeth grind when someone says that now as an IC you must pay your own taxes, no employer pays your taxes except for half of the social security tax. All rest is deducted from your pay. My first and second year I did see a CPA but now I use Turbo Tax and do it myself. But keep track of any and all expenses related to your business so you get the NET income down as far as you can, going to the bank, buying of supplies, telephone, internet, mileage. I find that I have more usable income having my own business than if I were an employee. But again, everyone look at your paycheck stubs and see how much you made before your employer PAID your taxes and afterwards -- gee is someone seems that the taxes came out of YOUR check and they did not pay them out of theirs. It hurts to see that 15% taken away but just get your net income down as much as you can. So if at 10 cpl you were an employee you would need to add approximately .0075 cents or after deductions about 1/2 of a cent to pay for your 7.5 percent social security tax. Anyway that is my math for a Saturday.
Full Core means full CPR code.

Did your computer come with a packet of additional
software? I have an HP computer, about 4 years old, that came with several disks of extras, one of which was WORD 2000.
Thanks for the clarification and additional information.

Additional info on SS taxes
As above post says, you do have to pay the employer and employee portion of the SS taxes. BUT, you then deduct the employer portion of those taxes on your 1040 at the end of the year. It's a pain because you have to shell the money out up front, but you get the deduction for it.
So, really, there's no difference in the taxes. It's just a difference in how and when you pay them.
My computer has additional ports on the sm

It is too bad you have hooked up with a person who does not value family. I always put family first. I used to not do that, and I regret those years.

Help..I lost my word file. How can I retreive a file that has been changed? sm
I was working on a large file and had saved it in Word. I then went back to work on the file and hit a key that made the page go blank. When I went to close the document it asked me to save any changes on the document. I answered yes, and now when I click on that document it is all blank! Shouldnt the previous info saved be there, even if the current stuff is not? Please help me!! Thank you
Depends on the file format of the Short Cuts file.
ShortHand comes with a utility file that can import various formats. You can get that file with the trial download of SH.

You can save the SH file in a text file and import to IT that way. sm
You may have to do some cleanup in the SH text file, but it sure would be faster than re-entering them all manually.
File taxes under the name on file w Social Security....
Name on W2 doesn't have to match, but your tax return has to match SS records. They don't want your marriage license or anything else. Did that for 13 years as instructed by IRS. Didn't have to change it with SS until state changed rules requiring drivers license to match SS records. Still use my maiden name in some limited circumstances.
no I'm not first, he tells me so too
My fiance' has informed me many times that his kids will always be first: kids first, me second. He's been raising them alone for 2 years now so they really take a toll on him (therefore US) emotionally, financially, even physically because his son is mentally handicapped and his daughter is extremely lazy and spoiled...so he is constantly cleaning up messes, doing unneccessary laundry, dishes, etc. (Could start a whole topic on that alone.) I have no kids, never been married. I love his kids but I can't say I'd give my life for them or anything. In fact, the more I explore our relationship I seriously doubt I will marry this man. Already he speaks of providing for them with me providing for myself and marriage is a joint effort. I resent the idea of furnishing a spoiled lifestyle for two kids who are not biologically mine. He's already mentioned that he'd provide for the kids & money I make could be "our" money. Well that amounts to me supporting the family, in my opinion....for what he buys the kids could also be used for paying bills, groceries, etc. Sigh, I think I deserve better...a better life than this.
Exactly right. If no one tells you, you won't know.

I don't think there is anything that tells you
how much RAM any particular process uses. If you have less than 1056 you don't have enough to be leaving a lot of programs open.
You can run a defrag and that might free up some stuff if you haven't done it in a while. Running a defrag doesn't allow you to do anything else on your computer though. I run it when I'm through for the night.
You can do an Msconfig and see if you have hidden programs running in the background and you can disable them from loading on startup.
Something Tells Me That -
Who tells everyone how fantastic their employer is, yet refuses to divulge the name should anyone ask because you fear they'll take your job.
Am I right?
Thought so.
I don't worry about those types of things. I'm secure enough in my skill and knowledge that I'm willing to share info with and help any MT who needs it.
Life's too short for such paranoid delusions.
Maybe just a letter that tells her how much you
appreciate her and everything she's done for you, how much you love her, et cetera. I would much rather have something like that from my children than a gift. Gifts are nice, too, but sometimes something from the heart just means so much more.

Well, I know you did, trying to create
LOL
You could probably create your own
if they want you to do that, you need to charge them an initial setup fee because that is timeconsuming and you don't get paid by the hour.
You definitely need to have a sit-down meeting with them to find out what they need. I would *think* the forms could be scanned or at least recreated on your computer, but again, without knowing what they have in mind, it's hard to tell.
My first thought is that it sounds like a real pain, lol, and that they might expect you to do things more THEIR way. You should be the one telling them what you will do, to a certain extent, and negotiate the rest. Look at their preprinted forms and tell them what YOU would like to do with them. They can either agree or negotiate something else, but if they ask you to do anything above your comfort level, charge them extra for that!
One word of caution - if you decide to recreate their forms, be clear that this is ONLY initial setup and make a separate charge for that. Otherwise, they may come to you with every form they want typed up for their office. If you don't mind doing that, at least charge them hourly for any forms as forms usually take far more time than straight typing. :)
Yes, our drug book tells us this
nm
Do you believe that story. That is what they told her to say. MQ tells everyone what to say to get
what they want. You would not believe the lines I have heard from my office. I have asolutely no respect for these people. They lie through their teeth for MQ. MQ is hiring because they want to have a very short TAT and try to keep the accounts they have and then a lot of people quit because they dont have work and have tons of backups and make no money in them. Everything MQ does is for them and not the MT. You are just along for the ride.
Yes, but only if tells me to sleep all day or eat ice cream.

He tells me he loves me all the time, and not
only does he tell me, he shows me. He isn't romantic at all, but he does little things all the time that shows he is thinking of me.
He likes to share new experiences with me, he enjoys going to craft shows with. He isn't particularly fond of working in the yard, but he knows how much I enjoy it and he spends hours working in the yard, even when I'm not working with him.
He cooks and helps around the house (usually without grumbling). I could serve him burnt toast for supper and he would thank me for a good meal.
He overlooks my faults.
Read your "stuff" -- it tells you when.
