people are not generalizing things that are not true. I visited a friend who lived in a trailer park and it was very bleak and depressing and that was without red neck loud neighbors.

I think it's the generalization that is so
offensive.
And see? There's the generalization.
"they either can't type or are trying to cook, clean, babysit and instead of making lines, they are making complaints"
Those of us who aren't fast either can't type or are cleaning house. Don't think so, honey. I have a separate office. I have an Expander and Dragon Naturally Speaking. I even know how to spell millennium and lots of other big words without using spellcheck. My kids are all in school fulltime. The problem isn't with me because I can make $30+ per hour on ONE of my accounts without using an expander. I also used to make production incentives at the hospital for going over and above. So please, spare us your sweeping generalizations about how we must be bad, distracted or lazy MTs because I'm really tired of speed demons spouting off nonsense against slowpokes when all we're trying to do is figure out how to make a decent income.
There are too many factors to even make a comparison. How long with company, how much experience, how long with software, how many different account specs in one day, how many different dictators in a month, how many faxes to find demographic information, how a line is counted, how much the expander can be used, etc.
What a generalization....
I have lung problems and am fine here. I went to Florida recently. I liked it, but missed home. My friend moved himself and his daughter out to the country a long time ago. He had more problems there with kids with drugs, etc., than he did in Houston and ended up moving back...not saying that is the norm, but it happens.
Also, sometimes there are things available to kids in cities that are not as available in the country. My kids are actively involved in gymnastics and they do not have the same facilities out in the country. I guess it all depends on what you are looking for, but Houston is not just a bunch of illegals, drugs and traffic. There is more to the city than that.
Besides, there are a ton of gorgeous places in Texas where one could live if commuting was not a problem. Texas is a very beautiful state with very nice people.
Sorry, but gross generalization.
I am married to a very well-educated, white collar guy and he does everything for me that you described your blue collar guy does for you and more. While DH is clean and well-groomed, he is far from vain and not at all the stereotype you described. Also, I've seen blue collar men who are disgusting pigs who just want to drink beer and watch TV.
Conclusion: There are both blue and white collar princes and both blue and white collar toads, so please do not generalize. :-)
Sweeping generalization -- please be more specific......sm
You don't say what type of violation this is. It may be that it is not a violation at all. There is a lot of misunderstanding when it comes to HIPAA.
exceptions
Well, there are exceptions to every rule, and as always, the few ruin it for the many.
I am a newbie, even less, I am still a student, an online student. And yes, I am hoping to work from home, and bring in any amount of money I can.
I am not trying to step on anyones toes, insult anyone, or the like. Don't think this is an easy profession, never did. I was a paralegal and a CNA before I stayed home with the kids.
Anyway, I agree with the negativity on here. On the other hand, I have also learned alot and got a lot of great info from some members of t his board.
Sorry y'all feel that way. Guess I can't really blame ya. :)
Cook it real slow at real low heat; simmer, don't boil.
nm
and there are so many exceptions to all those rule! lol
that's the english language for ya! I really don't know.
Maybe there are exceptions per client.
One client I has uses part of the BOS, other things they ignore.
Tell her NO exceptions, work has to be back. If she is not
able to do the work don't give it to her. You wouldn't tolerate it with the other MTs and I sure which I had an account that wouldn't drop me if work was that late. Send her (if you haven't already) a form where you state TAT and ask for her commitment on a monthly basis. You can state in the form that failure to meet TAT could/would result in termination. She is taking advantage of you but only because you allow her too.
Maybe only give her work 2 days a week and give her only an amount that she seems to be doing currently. If you give her less work maybe she will be able to meet TAT.
You probably have a lot of words in the autocorrect exceptions if
you backspace a lot. Click the exceptions button and go through all of the tabs in the dialog box and delete the words you don't want in there. Uncheck automatically add words on all of the tabs. That's the setting that will add words and change them to no proofing.
Exceptions to everything but majority parents

There are exceptions when Word won't cap after periods, like in numbers or after colons.

Personally, I think the books are a waste of money, with a few exceptions. sm
These days, I would get the CD instead of the book, if that option were available.
That said, I don't see the need for, nor can I justify the expense of, the standard reference series, like Stedman's. For the most part, anatomy doesn't change from year to year, and neither does the vast majority of the terminology. Of course, there are new procedures, new terms, etc., but chances are your book won't be up to date on those. So, a ratty old (cheap) used copy might be handy, but the Internet is much faster (provided you know how to use it properly and don't just accept any ol' c--p you find :-).
At most, I'd recommend (A) Stedman's Medical and Surgical Equipment Words (or whatever they're calling it in its latest incarnation), and perhaps the Stedman's word book pertaining to your speciality, if you have just one or two.
Otherwise, save your money.
those are exceptions to the rule and those are KING-PIN drug dealers, not the middle men who run
the drugs. If you have an EDUCATION and make enough money you don't have to deal drugs. The kids in ghettos running the drugs who are getting busted are doing this because they have no education and nothing else to do to make money. THEM's the proven statistics.
You are talking about apples and oranges. Yeah there is a temporarily rich meth guy living in a nice house but the majority of the rich guys are using punk kids with no education to sell the drugs. They aren't their on the corner in the ghetto dealing their own drugs.
The autocorrect dialog box has an exceptions button. Click that and delete what you want.

Have you ever checked the autocorrect exceptions list to see if you added those letters without

Getting the picture
NOW you're all getting the picture. You vote with your feet. Don't expect anybody else, especially government, to come to your rescue. I also tell anybody that I come across that asks (even if they don't, I'll still tell them) to find out where the heck their medical records are being shipped to. If doctors are getting questioned enough by various different people, maybe, just maybe, they'll get the hint.
So, just what is the whole picture on the

Thanks for the laugh.
My take on the big picture of VR
I really think the companies such as Dictaphone, have a very good sales staff, that talks a good talk to the powers that be at the hospitals, that they can save money, yada yada yada with the VR then the hospitals are justified in lowering the rate of pay for the VR ... so we are spending more time making sure these reports are correct, but getting less money for our time... WE LOSE OUT!
What is wrong with this picture?
You got $400 and I only got $25?????? I mean, WTF?????????????????
something is wrong with that picture

Did you see the latest picture of her (sm)

So very, very few good or talented actors these days. Give me Jerry Lewis or Bill Murray any day. And actresses? I can't even list any I like anymore besides Marily Monroe.
you are not seeing the big picture here for american MT's
Anyone can start a board, site.
What kept me here was their true dedication to US the American medical transcriptionists. Everyone is selling is out left and right.
If we dont stand up for ourselves we will be working for 4 cents a line.
All of the insulting offshoring companies in the GLOBAL NETWORKING COMMUNITY are now LAUGHING at us.
Do you think that is funny?
I don't think it is funny.
I think we've been sold out.
We are cheap labor. Nothing to bargain for.
All of your years of knowledge now count for NOTHING.
Good luck to you in the new global network.
I'm getting the full picture now. Not...
a pretty picture is it?
Oh DO share a picture with us all
We'd all just LUV to see him and please don't disappoint everyone with the old "Sorry, I don't have one" or "I don't know how to get the pic on the computer" because we just can't take no for an answer! We're sure you've got photos coming out of the woodwork on someone that cute but please, no substitutions with a pic of Brad Pitt all doctored up K?

Okay. Since you asked, here's his picture.
This was taken last week. He's the guy in large picture, dead center, () and I'm over on the right () in the smaller photo with pony tail. Sorry, they snapped our photos so fast neither one of us had the chance to take our glasses off! LOL!

If you have to work 3 jobs, something's gotta give. Lifestyle change, job change, something....life's too short to spend it all working.
A True Picture
Thank you for your post! Those of you that gave me an actual response instead of insults have given me a true picture of what MT is, and it is very different from what training companies would have you believe. It seems to be more work than I am willing to put forth.
Thanks!
I think a lot of people don't see the big picture.
For the most part MTs either had on-the-job training or have a certificate that required a year or so of schooling. If you only went to school for a year you probably wouldn't get getting paid anymore than what you can make as an MT. Those of us making upwards of $35,000/year it has taken us years to get to this point. Not necessarily because of wage increases, but because it takes a while to learn enough where you aren't looking up things constantly, takes a while to build your expander, increase typing speed, etc.
For MTs that have benefits they don't figure that into the line rate most of the time. For those who work at home they also don't figure in the clothes, the gas, car maintenance, etc.
I also feel like a lot of MTs complain (and rightly so) because these companies keep coming up with platforms that are not user friendly. If one company can have a platform that is super easy, the MT can be productive, why can't every company do that. It just doesn't make sense to me. If the MT is happy they are more likely to stay. These companies who have constant turnover have to employ several people just to deal with weeding out resumes, testing, training, etc. If they would take that $$ and put it into MT line rates and come up with a better platform they would still come out ahead.
A lot of new MTs buy into the $40,000/year that the TV commercials claim without ever investigating it and are in for a real shock.
There are lots of other reasons people complain. Some people will just not be happy period, doesn't matter if doing MT or not.
Some company, and again rightly so, that they get all the garbage reports while the good stuff gets offshored. I do 85% ESLs and don't mind doing my share, but I don't want to do garbage all day. If I get paid per line I need to be producing lines and if I can't do that then I'm not happy.
I see a bigger picture there than you do - sm
I see the state of US healthcare as a whole, which is going steadily downhill. It's a complicated mess and will take a lot of scrutinizing and picking apart to have any hope of cleaning up some of its dirtier secrets. Taking surveys in various sectors of that industry (especially in MT, a sector that for the most part is totally swept under the rug and ignored) is at least a step in the right direction. Not being interested in taking a survey is a personal decision, and if you feel threatened by it, then by all means steer clear if it makes you feel better. But your all-out attack on the idea, which seems to center around a PayPal button, seems skewed somehow, and makes me think you are MORE threatened by the thought that our profession's dirty laundry just might get aired.
Isn't that picture absurd??
I don't know what they were thinking! It's so ridiculous, it's laughable.

Don't tell me to wake up when you're the one who isn't seeing the big picture.
You don't even have a clue how much Canada buys from the U.S. I live right on the Canadian border. In fact, I even lived in Canada for several years. Canadians are far better for our economy than third world nations. They don't expect handouts and steal our work. They buy grain, beef, vegetables, commodities, health care, goods and services here. Canadians are good for our economy. Try taking a basic economics course before spouting off your invalid opinions.
And they can't "steal" our work anyways because their wages are the same as ours are.
Did anybody else see this poor kitty picture?
Copy and paste, you will be amazed and sad at the same time.

Something is terribly wrong with this picture.
The person/doctor dictating does not fill in or even dictate the required demographic fields. However, I am expected to do MR# searches, patient name searches, doctor searches, prior report searches, whatever it takes, to find out this information before I can even start transcribing the reports. It might not be so bad but I work for two very large accounts and the number of doctors I transcribe for are too numerous to count. It's no wonder I never make my quota. Oh, yeah, did I mention I have more mumblers than clear speaking doctors, also to add to the problem.
This is a joke. I'm an IC and make a whopping $0.07 line. Yippee. Think I'l go work at Walmart.
absolutely nothing wrong with the picture
Just your knowledge of the difference between an employee (statutory or regular) and an independent contractor.
Getting 7 cpl is strictly that. For every line, you will receive 7 cents compensation.
The client can "expect" all they want, but as an IC you have the legal right to bill for your time.
I wish more hospitals & clinics would get the picture that (sm)
what you have just described is the best and most cost-effective way to get quality transcription. At the hospital where I used to work, MTs are treated like the scum of the earth. The nationals want us, but pay peanuts. By eliminating the middleman and the overhead of having enough office space for MTs, a hospital/clinic can pay the MTs what they're worth, the MTs can afford to keep working for them and stay on for many years, gaining a better knowledge of the doctors and the institution. Both that and having decent pay and a more flexible schedule means happy MTs, and happy MTs will go the extra mile to produce top-level work. It sounds like your employer is ahead-of-the-curve in the way it deals with its transcription needs.
Hayseed, I just figured out that was a pig in your picture!
Regarding pay raises, I am paid hourly. I work for a fairly large multispecialty clinic. Last week we got a 3% COLA raise. I've been there four years and I've gotten a raise every year.
Moderator - can we have a picture board?
you know - family, kids, pets (the babies), etc?
