MTs/factory workers
I'm sure many younger and maybe even older MTs might not agree with this, so if you do, I'll be pleasantly surprised. The "how many lines per hour can you do?" mentality so prevalent in medical transcription today is not a good thing for this profession. This belittles the professionalism of the job we do, a profession which requires immense medical knowledge and skill, a fact which, sadly, no one in hospital administration or other positions of management have a clue about and really don't want to know about, else they would have to monetarily compensate us for the professionals we really are. The sad fact is that like a frog being killed by slowly upping the temperature of the water in which he is immersed, without his being aware of the change in temperature, we have by an analagous method slowly but surely become no more than skilled factory workers. X-ray techs, nurses, physical therapists, and other professionals are not evaluated on the basis of the number of patients they take care of each day but on how well they take care of these patients, so why are we evaluated on the basis of how many lines of transcription we can do per hour or day rather than the quality and accuracy of the reports we transcribe? It used to be our responsibility as MTs to put the patient first, to give the appropriate time to research any questions we have regarding the physician's dictation on a particular patient and to make sure we get it right for the sake of the patient, but now it has become the focus of our profession to see many lines per hour we can transcribe. This mentality leads to just trying to produce lines rather than trying to transcribe accurate medical reports. It is my firm opinion that we should not be paid by the line but by the hour, and unfortuantely, AAMT has not been there to represent us in this very relevant issue. If we are so professional as they espouse, then why don't they try to get on track and reverse this trend? In my opinion, AAMT has failed us. They have been so focused on style issues, which are of far less significance than medical accuracy and have caused many of us to boil inside because of the attention given to these really mostly irrelevant issues, that the crux of our problems has escaped them. They have been in absentia and have not been focusing on the issue of getting health care facilities and transcription companies to recognize us for the professionals we are and elevating our pay scale to the level it should be. I have been an MT for over 20 years, so I've seen the negative changes as they've slowly but surely transpired through the years. Perhaps it's time for me to leave the profession altogether because I just can't deal with this "factory productivity" mentality.
MTs/factory workers

There are many ways of sifting the chaff from the wheat.  It doesn't take long to figure out those who are goofing off versus the ones who are researching to transcribe accurate medical reports.  There also other means of monitoring MTs at home if one feels the necessity to be monitored.  Also, there are ways to clock in and out on a pay-per-hour basis. One is via dial-up method and entering one's ID number into a designated system.

As for being paid for the amount one does versus being paid hourly I would only ask, would you want someone rushing through your H&P, your child's H&P,  or the H&P or other report of any loved one just to get a certain number of lines a day, possibly listing an allergy to the wrong medication or listing the wrong extremity or wrong eye designated for a surgical procedure?  I have transcribed for many, many years and there have been innumerable times that I have had to correct mistakes by physicians who have dictated the wrong extremity, the wrong eye, the wrong medication, the wrong drug allergies, etc., etc.  I for one wouldn't want someone transcribing that I'm allergic to Namenda when I'm really allergic to Augmentin, and it's easy to see how these two medications could be misunderstood if the physician dictating isn't articulate enough, if the quality of the dictation system is poor, or if one is in just too big a hurry to produce lines to care.  I do pray if I am ever a patient in a hospital that the MT who does my report gets it right.  With such emphasis on line counts, it's no wonder we have patients who have had their only "good eye" or "good extremity" removed surgically.

horrors of factory farming
Not naive, just grossly misinformed.  It is in the best interest of factory farming to keep the public in the dark about the gross injustices of torture and inhumane killing of these sentient beings.  I am working right now, but I have lots of information to back this up, if you could just give me until this evening, I will find it for you.  Thanks so much for being willing to listen and see what is truly going on, cudos to you.  All for the animals.
Just like trying to buy original factory parts for a -(sm)
Ford truck that is more than 5 or 6 years old! The dealership's reasoning: 'Most people replace their trucks every 2 or 3 years.' Why tout them as being 'Ford tough' and as lasting for decades, if you can't buy parts for them after 5 years? Geezz.......

I agree 100% with your conspiracy/survivalist/money-making tactic for AAMT. No BOS was ever needed 'til they came along and said it was.........
DQS already has an expander built in (sm)
so you can build upon that. It's the only one I use, can't get into those other ones! Good luck, it isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be!
If we built and continue...

....to build corporations in Mexico, they why in the world do they keep coming over here for work?

I totally understand where you're coming from.  I have had many family members and friends lose jobs they have worked at for 25+ years.  It's a shame this continues to go on.  Maybe our political postions should be outsourced to the American people, not the high-rollers who are put there because of WHO they know and NOT because they care about us!

My son built my new computer for me
last year. He is very knowledgeable in this field and he recommended the AMD 64-bit processor as opposed to the Pentiums. He said they were more reliable. I love my new computer. We purchased a "build your own" bundle through Tiger Direct, where you choose what you want in it. Mine was slightly over $500 with the DVD burner DVD player, mother board with 64-bit processor, and 512 mb of ram. plus some other features, that I don't remember, but my son could probably tell you. He said the 63-bit processors are the wave of the future technology. Hope it helps.
Have you built up your speed yet? How did you
deal with the learning curve and still get your line count in?  Thanks for posting this link!
You can have one built special for you
at any computer tech store. I ended up getting a refurbished laptop on ebay that had XP on it and got Word 2003 for only $39. I did buy a 2-year warranty on teh laptop, but even with that it was cheaper than buying a new one and having to have Vista deleated and adding XP and all the new drivers.
Yes-- I have an Adesso with a built-in touch pad
It works very well for me-- you don't have to move your hand that far to use it. It is strange at first, but once you get used to it, you will love it.
Do they still make keyboards with a built-in
nm
I agree with a custom-built....sm

The problem with Gateway as well as IBM and probably a few others is they are proprietary, no one else can upgrade them. And unless you live in a large city with a Dell service center, for example, you are going to have to ship it whenever there's a problem or changes needed. It's a pain if you decide you need more memory, etc.

I bought a used custom built that a local computer shop had stripped down to the basics, and they have been able to upgrade consistently for me. As a result I've had this computer for 5 years through numerous platforms, etc. and it's still exactly what I need it to be. Also when I have a problem they can service it without a lot of questions because they know it's history to a T. I would have had to buy a whole new computer during this time...great if you've got the money to do it every few years, but I don't. So for me, this is the only way to go.  .

he may have built it as an IC software developer, but I ...
do not believe it was ever Sheri's intention to have him take it over and represent overseas MTs and overseas MT companies. Whatever the situation, we'll never know for sure. The point is, the new administrator should advertise the website in an honest manner. For starters, he should remove the American Flag from the homepage and post the facts on the homepage that this is a website for International MTs from all countries and services being advertised are from both U.S. companies and overseas companies (having a base in one of our US States and conducting business overseas in no way makes a company American operated (maybe they have an office based in the U.S). Our U.S. citizens deserve to know where their medical records are going, and the doctor dictating their patient records deserves the same. What is the big deal about being up front and honest with straight forward advertising in an obvious area of the website for all to see?
The wireless company has built their own s/m
towers in many areas or lease buildings in strategic spots.  For instance, they have one on our local water tower, the farmer down the road from me has one on his silo, just in different locales.  They invested a lot of money in this because it is the only alternative out here.  They do not rely on the cell phone companies at all.  I know that things like trees and stuff impede it as well, as there are some people out here that can't get either unless they build their own tower that goes above the trees to put the receiver on.  The company spent a lot of time scouting out locations on hills, etc. to make this work.  I'm lucky that the silo is within my range.
Our regular Walmart was fine. Then they built the SM
Super Walmart. It is disgusting. The toiletries department is small, smaller than the other one in the original store. Lots of absolutely horrible clothes and I am not a snob. The quzlity of the clothes has gone done, if that is possible.

The worst part is the food section. I don't buy food there, but it is dirty, broken boxes of FOOD lying around. Few name brand items, it is truly awful. The produce section is about 2 feet wide. Damn shame.
Well that stinks, my vet just built an addition onto the "house" she was using - sm
It is now basically 2 houses connected with a wide hallway. She has 1 partner, who she has had for the last few years, and has not changed her services/prices at all. She now does have a $25 visit fee but you only have to pay it once a year, if you are regular customer she won't charge you for it everytime you come in. She does not charge for putting an pet to sleep either, as long as you are a regular (She knows us pretty well, I was there a lot with my old dog). She is very helpful to me, recently boarded our 16-y/o schipperke though she has not had her shots this year (my normal kennel would not take her since she was not current on her shots -- was due in 9/05) but as she is on her last legs I see no point in getting her vaccines. The dog is deaf and blind, having kidney failure very slowly but seems happy and my DH can't bring himself to put her to sleep yet. Our vet agrees with us on this point too.
built in shelves, cute as a button!

Our Wal Mart moved. Built a Superstore behind Kmart!

Suprisingly, Kmart is still hanging in there and that's where I did most of my Christmas shopping. Great toy department! Much better than Wal Mart.

No lines and no waiting either and you can park pretty close to the store.

I built my own using the auto-correct function in Word. (sm)
I removed most of the words that came with auto-correct, and replaced them with my own short macros, which consist of words, phrases, & short sentences. Little or no memorizing involved, because I made them up as I went along whenever I kept getting the same things over and over again, and got tired of typing them. For longer macros I just put them in a document file that I can copy and paste. Simple. And CHEAP!
Site was foreign built from the beginning..just listed at top only for US

They are newbies! They can built a Medical Phrase book
buy entering the answers given on the word help board into the
'Medical Phrase Index.'

They will learn.

Isn't it the goal, last not least to facilitate the job?

Why do we use calculators, computers, kitchen appliances that facilitate out work?

This is called evolution!
My "techies" come to the house and most of the time get it fixed here. They built the computer

That's what I thought too, but I was told the built in thing was compatible with my router. nm

I believe most of the software written for MTing have a built in "cannot edit"

mechanism,so that once a document has been signed; electronically or otherwise, it cannot be altered.

Regarding Addundums, if you were not the original Transcriptionist who typed the document, most companies prefer that you bypass it in the pool, which will then be reassigned to the original transcriptionist.  It's not good company policy reading and/or making an addenda to anyone else's report other than your own.

Anyone from Georgia?

Looking for some info about Gainseville GA in Hall County. What kind of community? Nice place to live, etc... Thanks!

Thanks Georgia Gal!

That was some peachy-fine info you gave out.

Thanks from a Florida Gal!!

To Georgia Gal
Amen.. I agree with you totally. Heck, if I could work for cash, I would too. More power to them. Anyway, who is going to report a person to the IRS for paying cash to someone? I sure wouldn't. Great Post!!
I'm in Georgia, too.
They're pressuring our kids because the schools around here are so bad, and they're trying to move up the ladder within the 50 states in terms of test scores. My local superintendent of schools is constantly making excuses about why our scores are lower, i.e. absences on test days, higher standards, etc. It's a bunch of junk. The teachers are being pressured to get the students to score higher on two tests per year rather than teaching like the old days. In addition, the AR (accelerated reader) program has turned my son away from wanting to read just for the sake of doing so. He used to actually enjoy the stories and didn't worry about how many points the books were worth.

people are now suing owners of pit bulls when their dogs kill or attack themselves, their kids, animals, etc. The state had legislation last year to ban these vicious mutts but it didn't pass.

Asking rate in Georgia for MTs?sm

Just curious as to what other Georgia MTs with their own accounts are getting per line.  I have been an MT for about 12 years and don't think I am being paid enough, but would like to know what everyone else is asking before I raise my rates. Thanks!!

I'm in northwest Georgia ....
specifically, Cedartown.
Not so hillbilly to me-from Georgia!

Hi, Renee. Welcome to Georgia. SM
I am in the far north portion of the state, where my husband and I and our pets are snuggled inside enjoying a very nice Saturday while the snow falls outside. Far more serene than your home with two little ones, no doubt, but missing out on all the fun too. Speaking of, I can't even read the paper when watching my tiny grandson, so I can't begin to imagine how you moms manage to get any work done.

Does anyone live in Adairsville (Georgia?) sm
If so, if you bank with Crescent Bank or know anyone who works there or does... tell them thank you.  I'm a foster parent and the bank sponsored my foster child for the holidays and today I received a lot of gifts for her for Christmas... more than I ever dreamed she'd get.  The people did a great job of making sure that this Christmas is unlike the past ones... where in the past the parents would take any gifts and sell/return them for drug money.  This year she gets to keep her presents since the parents are no longer involved in her life.
