Could you please find a source that is more reliable than a bunch of loons espousing conspiracy theories? Then I'll listen.

While we're waiting, I'm going to save this site for when I need a little entertainment. Thanks! Really!

P.S. Keep a journal! sm

Your life is changing for the better by the minute! If you don't keep a journal, this would be a great time to start. Write down how you feel today, the day you took control. If you ever waver in the future, or if you ever want to look back and see where you were, you can go back to today, the day that things changed and you felt your power for maybe the first time in a long time. In a few years, you may find what you wrote about right now just amazes you.

Do you mean the Journal of AAMT? I believe it comes with sm
a yearly membership to AAMT.
AAMT Journal-Is is worth it to get it?

Does anyone get the AAMT Journal.  Is it worth the money?

I do. It's the "new way" I think. I've been doing it for years. SM

I have a macro that goes back and double checks for two spaces and changes them to one.

Then I have another (for an old-timey account) that goes back and finds period space space and exchanges it for period space.

That way I don't have to remember.

Nothing wrong with saying "new hires" sm
You "hire" a plumber, even though it's not your "employee," so I see no problem with someone saying an IC was a "new hire." The word hire means to engage for service under term of contract - that doesn't cross any line, IMHO.

Yes, the MTSO you contract with can be considered your client. All ICs are self employed, so yes, you are your own boss. However, the client is still your "boss," in the sense that they do have the control of your workflow. IOW, if you don't meet their expectations, they can choose not to use you anymore and find someone else who will. Be cautious how far you take that "not-my-boss" attitude because it can backfire on you is all I'm saying.

As far as stating your rates, absolutely. You can tell the MTSO what you charge as an IC. The MTSO also has the option of saying no thanks. Just like if a plumber charges more than what you are willing to pay, you can move on to the next plumber. If the MTSO tells you what they are willing to pay and it's not what you desire, you have the option to say no thanks, too. However, I do not think an MTSO is crossing any line by saying "this is what we are willing to pay." If you go to a physician's office, they are going to do the same and tell you what they are willing to pay. You absolutely have the right to say "Well, this is what I charge," and they can then decide if they want to continue to do business with you or find another service that is within their price range.
Did you try rebooting to see if it would recognize "new...sm
hardware?" Sometimes that will work if there is no driver to install. Hope this helps!
Here's the article from the Atlanta Journal posted today....
Boy, 3, struck and killed in Gwinnett

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 07/25/05

A three-year-old boy was struck by a vehicle and killed early Monday after wandering away from the Gwinnett County condominium where he was staying.

Gwinnett County police spokesman Darren Moloney said Anthony Lloyd Oscar Littrean was staying with family friends at Olde Mill Crossing complex off Graves Road while his mother was hospitalized giving birth to a sibling.

Officers responding to a 4:30 a.m. report of the missing child found Anthony on Graves Road, across from the complex, Moloney said. He had been hit by a southbound vehicle.

Anthony was taken to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite, where he later died, Moloney said.

"They child was staying with family friends while the parents were at Northside Hospital," Moloney said, adding that Anthony's mother gave birth early Sunday morning.

Moloney said investigators believe the child "defeated the locks at the apartment he was staying at."

"When the family friends became aware the child was missing, they immediately began to search and called 911," Moloney said. "At this time, there is on indication of criminal neglect on the part of the child's caretakers."

He said Gwinnett police were "asking for help from anyone who might have been traveling down Graves Road toward South Norcross Tucker Road, away from I-85."

Moloney asked that anyone with information on the accident call 770-513-5048.

"Our investigators want to stress that it is possible that a [driver] struck the child without knowing exactly what they did," Moloney said. "It's possible a person struck the child without even causing damage to their car."

some people think it means "new message" and
go ahead though
Good point about their "new tools".
By the way, I'm emailing and don't have to print them.  Thanks everyone!
According to the latest Plexus journal entitled "Planning Your exit" ....
even editing may soon be a thing of the past. I don't have the journal, but I have heard about at least one article making the point that, even though the unedited reports produced by physicians using VR are atrocious, the quality (or lack thereof) is beginning to be acceptable anyway with seemingly no concern about the how the poor quality of these reports might impact patient safety or quality of health care. The article makes the observation that this trend may be the harbinger of the death of our profession, hence the title, "Planning Your Exit." Anyone have the journal and, if so, can you share more of what it has to say?
On job board "New World Trans" ...I am wondering
firstly what kind of company they are when they cannot spell the word "pedal"  correctly and also 7 cents CAD??? What is the CAD?  Something fishy about his ad.
inquiry
can you help me?how did you start working as an mt? how did you get a client? Im a newly grad. and want to have an idea on how to get a client for mt?Or maybe you can help me to refer to some of your clients. thanks.
Inquiry to A Little Less
I am a bit curious. I have been in this business for a very long time and I have never found a company or service that would pay any where near $30 an hour nor let anyone achieve the lines for that rate of pay. Willing to share? Thanks.
I saw that ad also. Sent an inquiry. Never got a response.

Another Cobra inquiry
Does anyone know how long you have to be on the insurance to qualify for cobra. I did have a lapse in my prior coverage but have no pre-existing conditions so wasn't worried. Have now had the insurance at my employment about 30 days but am thinking about leaving, does anyone know if I will be eligible for Cobra?
Account inquiry. sm
I know that I should not probably ask this on this forum here, but was wondering if anyone knew which transcription service now has the Palmetto Hospital accounts out of South Carolina.  All I was told was that it went to a company that has solely ICs.  Not sure if that is true.  If you can tell me, I would appreciate it, but yet I understand why you might not be able to divulge info.  If somebody could just shoot some hints my way, maybe I could figure it out.
You answered somebody's inquiry

a few weeks ago about my company and it sounded as though you were a current employee.

Hey, it's okay to vent.  I know it must be frustrating.

I'm glad I have not had to buy a BOS 3.  That would make me mad.  They are waaaay too expensive.

USB flash drive inquiry....sm

Would someone enlighten me?  My teenager came home with a printout for a school project and the teacher wants the projects turned in one one of these keychain things.  I have no idea how to do this and if I need to buy anything extra for my PC.   How does this work?  Do you just plug it into your PC and are able to save data right onto it or are special programs needed?  The more I searched on the internet the more I couldn't figure it out.   I've already e-mailed the teacher asking that she be allowed to bring the project in on CD as we're pros at that one and I really don't want to spend a dime for some goofy teacher's request...but just in case.....   Thank you

Cost of living inquiry $1800/mo. (sm)

That's only electric, heat, cable, and mortgage.

Add in insurances, life, health, car etc. and you're talking  another $1200 more. Hubby drives a 12 year old PU truck and I drive a 13 year old car. BUT, 4 more years for our mortage...yippee....but it should have been paid off in 1991. Remortgaged so we could build a larger place. Still not finished with the house and it's been 11 years. No time, no money left over to finish. That's okay. I can deal with that.

Prior wedding inquiry update...sm

Previously I had posted on this board  as my fiance and I were trying to figure out how to handle letting people know that we don't want any wedding gifts (we each have a house and don't need material things as we're giving away tons of stuff with merging the home) but had chosen a charity for anyone who would like to make a donation in our honor.

My maid of honor and a couple of friends decided to host a party for us and on the invitations put on there that in lieu of gifts that we were requesting donations to a children's charity that we chose because of the reputation of spending the money wisely  and being well known for its work.

This has gone over very well with the invitees.  I've had many of them call and e-mail me or my fiance saying that they thought this was a wonderful way for us to help others less fortunate and yet celebrate our upcoming marriage.   The charity  agreed prior to our announcement to not pester these people afterwards with mailings and is simply sending those that send a donation a thank you card, and then they're sending me a weekly list showing who made a donation and their address, but not the dollar amount as I don't care to know what they gave.

So... for future brides that don't want gifts  I suggest doing what we did - it's a win for the charity and lets the family/friends that wanted to do something special do this in a way that we chose (and we aren't stuck with household items we don't want or need!)

Survey - inquiry minds want to know - how many lines...sm
can you normally type in a 6 hour day?  Not your highest, your average please.  I know there will be specifics, but base it on your average day, average dictator, average workload.  I am very curious to see what everyone else can do.  TIA
TENS unit inquiry minds want to know:

Just wondering if anyone has a personal experience using a TENS unit they could share.  How long do you use yours for, if you find relief that you forgot you could have, etc.  As a chronic low back pain sufferer, I’m looking forward to getting mine on Tuesday!

Thanks

social anxiety
Maybe we're loners.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/partyofone/
Social anxiety, yes!!
So good to know I am not alone.  Just last night I was at karate class watching my kids and watching all the other moms interact.  This is how it always is for me.  Watching everyone else chat and laugh and have a good time.  I am very uncomfortable in social situations, and it seems like everyone else is not at all uncomfortable.  Feels like I am the only one in the world with this. I don't really want to rely on a med, but I don't know how to get past this.  All my neighbors are very close knit, I am the only one who never interacts or joins in on the get-togethers.  They must think I'm stuck up.  The truth is, I would rather take a beating than go to a block party!  Any ideas on how to get past this?
social recluse
Why would anyone become an MT if they needed a lot of socializing? One of the main reasons I became an MT is lack of need for interaction with others.
I was a social recluse before this job.
...which I guess is why I have adapted so well to it.  I could never handle gossip or having to walk around pretending to be a happy "team member" in an office setting.  I watch "The Office" as a reminder as to how pukey that whole workin' in an office situation really is...but it is extremely funny when you aren't a part of that atmosphere anymore though.  I once worked with a female version of Dwight and it was so not funny.  Dwight=funny.
Social graces?
Been there done that. I have a Jewish doctor who mumbles and has a very strong New York accent - - and he has no social graces whatsoever - - burps, sneezes, coughs, sucks snot, eats with his mouth full -- YUK!!! The worst part is you have to listen again because you couldn't understand what he said the first or second time.
As an IC MT do you pay into Social Security? SM

I am an IC MT in California.  Does anyone know if we can pay into SS so that we get compensated for retirement?  As of yet, I have not but would like to in the future, if it is possible.

TIA

Social Security
If I understand it right, assuming you are paying your federal taxes, you are paying Social Security.  It's something like 15.3% of your reported income, half of which you get to deduct if your income is under $102,000.  Gee, think I just barely fall under that tax bracket!  Google "self-employed social security" or something along those lines for a full explanation.
I need the social interaction too -
I have been applying for jobs in town everywhere, not necessarily in the medical field, but I am also spoiled - I get to thinking about it and wonder whether I really want to work 20 hours a week for 6 dollars when I could make that in 3 hours at home...

So, I decided I was going to go back to college part time and get a degree in something that would pay me what I make in transcription and give me the option of getting out of my house and meeting people and becoming human again.

I loved my job for a long time, but lately it is taking a toll on my health and emotional welfare. I have a degenerative joint problem in which the doctor told me I would be better off as the door greeter at Walmart than sitting in this darn chair all the time... I am becoming withdrawn from the world, I have gained lots of weight, and just feel down and depressed all the time.

It's time for me to "get a life" before I get too old and have these same problems with age discrimination.
I don't have much of a social life myself, but working on it
But being in my mid 30s I don't know if i'm going to click with anyone.  I just know I cannot do the online dating anymore!  Its so disppointing meeting the person after they've built themselves up AND have used the best picture ever taken of them in their entire lives on their profile.  Some people swear theyve had good luck, its about 50/50.  Its just not for me, very awkward and weird.  Thats why a reality TV show on it will be fabulous!  I'm just hoping its on tonight, supposedly ABC or something.
There is a balance though, people who are too social
People who tend to spend a lot of time alone seem to be a little sad.  Just mix it up a little and find your balance.  For me, if i'm around people too much, I feel absolutely drained, but if i'm totally isolated, I feel trapped and sad.  So I socialize a couple times a week by taking classes, seeing family members, talking to neighbors, meeting up with a friend, and thats enough.  Just not everyday, maybe not even every two days!
They are. Many of them get social security checks for
mental illness or other issues. Some of them spend their social security checks the day they get them on booze and gambling. Some people CHOOSE to be homeless, if you can believe that. There are programs out there for them if they apply. I got to know the homeless population of our city pretty well at one of my former job. I could tell you some stories about some of those characters. One guy is homeless, but he could have his house and bank account, his military retirement, and his social security. Instead, he pushes a cart around town and sleeps on park benches. One woman runs down the street in nothing but polyester pants pulled up to her armpits in the bitter cold of winter. She has shoes and a coat, plus welfare and social security benefits.
As far as the social situation is concerned, get

him in cub scouts, community sports, etc.  This is really not an educational issue IMO and not the responsibility of the school system.

The school system in most cases will try to do as little as possible for your child, but if you have a diagnosis, you can write an IEP and they have a legal obligation to follow it, whether they like it or not.   They also have to provide testing, like it or not, but we always had ours done on our own as I didn't feel like I would get an honest evaluation from the school system.

the self-employment tax IS the 1/2 of your social security...
"On top of the self-employment tax, etc., you don't get the benefit of your company paying 1/2 of your social security so that is where most of your money at tax time goes to. "  please don't post if you don't know what you're talking about.
Anyone have social anxiety disorder?
nm
Social Security will take it from your Schedule C

Social Security will take your earnings from your Schedule C that goes onto your 1040.  Whatever amount you declare and pay your self employment taxes on (15.75%) is the amount that they will use for your yearly earnings.

My kids are far from being a social recluse...
I have some of the most social kids in the neighborhood.  Every day they are playing with other kids, and they are in karate as well.  My daughter has Tourette's syndrome and she said people at school were making fun of her tics.  I choose to protect her from those kids, but she is not at all socially isolated, only isolated from the kids who ridicule her...
If you are a social recluse, it won't make
you come out of your shell, but if your life has good balance, it should not hamper your social abilities at all. I definitely am a people person and have worked at home since early 90s.
How to get in touch with social security?
Went by the office this morning, unbelievable, just wanted to set up an appt but too many waiting. I tried to find the web site but had no luck therel. I have heard you can set up an appt that way, just need to know where to look. TIA.
Can somewhat please guide me as to how to pay Social Security, SM

federal and state taxes as an IC? I am new to this and dont know the first thing about it. How do I get vouchers for the taxes and how do I pay the SS...thank you!

yeh, we have to have a tight grip on our social graces

We'll start walking around wanting to backhand everyone who looks at us sideways.

My DD is a social worker and says that she dictates directly into VR
and the report is on her desk when she gets back to the office. She said everyone in her department loves it!
Kate's obviously been out of social circulation too long
and passes her solitary days by picking fights on message boards.

Time to find a job outside the home, Kate.
Aren't politics and religion social no-nos? sm
And I believe there is a very good reason for that.
For IC MTs, when you pay your quarterly taxes that you calculate do you also add in the 15% social s
First time doing this.
Do you find that this job makes you a social recluse?
I never get out socially with anyone.  It's just my husband and three kids.  People used to call, but since I both work full time transcription and home school, I never had time to do anything and people just quit calling.  Yesterday evening a neighbor had a party and invited women from the neighborhood, but not me.  That hurt my feelings, and made me see just how isolated I am from the world.  I am also pretty shy by nature, but being home all day and never getting out doesn't help.  Do any of you feel isolated with this job?  Does it bother you??
Do you pay quarterly taxes? Can you pay Social Security (sm)

I have always just filed at the end of the year.  Does everyone else (IC) file quarterly?

Also, if I want to pay into my social secirty on my own, can anyone tell me how to do that?

Thanks!!

Paying Social Security is not optional.

social security card needed for job?
I am looking for a second job for some extra money and just was called back about one, he said to bring my license and social security number and i said okay bye. cause i was so excited, but then I thought, wait a minute, what? I don't have my social security card with me... First is this true, second how do i get one?
That only covers the income tax, not the social security tax.
You will have to pay the social security tax on your IC pay.
