People think the adults take the paper routes away from the kids. It's not like that anymore. Papers need to be delivered by 6:00 a.m. PERIOD and customers want their paper delivered in a certain location, i.e., between the front or back door. Some meet you outside at 5:00 a.m. and ask why the paper is "late!" A kid can't ride a bike at 6:00 a.m. and toss papers in the driveway like the old days. It's complicated, frustrating and difficult to do papers.
Routes go from small walking routes (like mine) with 75 papers, to big driving routes with over 200 papers. My sister does 285 papers that she puts into tubes. She has to drive to the distribution center and pick up her papers at 2:30 a.m. She makes over $1000 a month, but it is not a route that can be done on foot or by bike.
I'm still fortunate enough to have my paper bundles dropped in my driveway and it's only an hour walking at the most right in my own quiet neighborhood.
The day of the "paper boy" is long gone. It is paper "carrier" now because it is no longer a job for a kid.
