in that hospital making $6 an hour who are still there. The opportunities are there for those who will put in work to excel at MT and make connections and move up. I couldn't see sitting there year after year hoping I'd get a raise and depending on someone else to decide whether I would get a raise, and how much of a raise. Yes, it was a risk to leave my hourly pay with excellent benefits include inexpensive insurance and five weeks of vacation a year, but I took a chance and it's paid off.
I just wish other MTs didn't have such a defeatist attitude about their jobs. I see some people who are still where I was 20 years ago. I see others who have far surpassed where I am and I know if I could have (and still can) be there too; I just need to do things a little differently than I've been doing. I am very grateful for the accounts I have and the connections I have, but it all started with really hard work and putting in the time to learn everything I possibly could and using it to my advantage. I used to be a medical records file clerk - FOR REAL, I was! And I worked my way up from there, learned transcription, went through every door that opened, took every opportunity that came my way, and right now I'm in the process of working my way up a little higher on the ladder.
I really appreciate the input from you three! I had to stop reading posts below earlier and not so sure I want to read them now...probably not.
