In Reply to: the downward spiral of the MT - time to get out
Thank you for taking the time to write that. I have contemplated on doing something similar as I am fed up, too, but you said it far more eloquently and effectively than I could.
I remember the IBM typewriter and the correction tape, right on up to the current "new and improved" methods.
It is not just in transcription, but many companies AND employees do not understand loyalty. Companies do what they have to do to make a buck, and now so don't we.
I wouldn't mind going back to college to do something else, but I cannot for the life of me figure out what it is I would enjoy doing that also will pay the bills and make me happy. I am no longer happy doing this. I have a degree in a career that I worked at for a long time, also in health care, but that too has changed, and not for the better. I do not like the direction the MT field is taking. The harder I work, the less I get paid.
I cannot imagine being 55 and looking for a new career because this one doesn't exist any more due to VR or whatever else is coming this way to replace humans and save $$. I want to make the change NOW before I am truly up the creek without a paddle, without a job, without health insurance and without my dignity.
This used to be a great job, but now I see no future. If I remain an MT, I foresee jumping from job to job as VR takes hold along with outsourcing. I want to be with the same company forever, but that's a thing of the past. I believe the newest statistics are that on average people change jobs a little over every 7 years. There is no such thing as job security.
Well, what a downer this thread is going to be!
