it naturally hasn't been easy today - especially getting up this morning and feeding the other cat and dog and knowing that I didn't have to put food in her bowl. My niece came over today and brought a flower for her grave. I have sent in a post for Rainbow Bridge but it hasn't shown up yet. I'm presuming that the owner probably screens post requests?

Thanks for the supportive words - sm
What really is getting to me lately is that I am an IC. Technically I can work whenever I want to work. My plan for the summer was to work early mornings. My kiddos like to sleep in. But, as it turns out, there usually is next to nothing to work on in the early morning. The work builds up throughout the morning and usually is full-blown by late afternoon, so that plan is not working. Looks like my only option is late night transcription, but that won't always work either, as far as availability of work. My "sweet" little guys are sleeping soundly right now and I am starting to breathe normally again!
Ya'll have been so supportive and wonderful. Can I be honest? sm
This is absolutely a dream job for me. I was also told yesterday (although I was hesitant to share this info) that they also would like me to write for the company! They gave me a list of topics for the next year (24 of them - 2 per issue) and I can choose whatever topics I feel comfortable with and just write! I'm an avid journaler with a dream all of my life to write a book. So, this whole thing is just blowing me away. I can't believe it.
There are so many writing/freelance writers websites out there with thousands of potential writers and aspiring writers who are dying for a chance like this. I am just humbled.
Talked to hubby last night. He doesn't think I can afford to quit QAing/MTing right now. So, I am going to ask to be very part time and see what they say! I also have to change my schedule around to accommodate this new position.
Thank you, each and every one of you, for your very positive response. You know, I didn't receive one negative response and I am just so surprised! Thanks again.

You'll need a lab words book and maybe the Derm and Immunology Words..nm

Well, I'll eat my words then....
Glad that it is a help to all who need it. Who knows, I may need it some day myself. I'm still typing on the standard keyboard. I have noticed over the many years of typing, that the height of the keyboard is very important for me. If it's the wrong height, my shoulders suffer. I guess we're all anatomically different.
talk about a few choice words, I'll bet they had some then.....
Stedman's Ortho and Rehab words. You'll keep researching screws & pins as long as you do

Lots of 'em, but use a Lab Words, Sted's Ortho/Rehab Words, & Tessier's Surgical Words most

how very supportive of you
I guess you are trying to be funny, but this is not a very helpful post. I also don't get the Bob or Joseph part. Huh?
Do you have any suggestions or advise just giving up, so I don't become as cynical as you are?
How very supportive of you
Maybe this is why you can't find a job. Don't jump all over me, I haven't worked since Sept. so don't come on here blasting me for not feeling sorry for you.
Where has all the work gone, or the majority of it? Answer that question and you may be able to get over feeling sorry for yourself long enough to figure it out.
I guess you have not had the pleasure of calling one of the infamous call centers that have all ouotsourced to India. It is always Bob or Joseph that answers the phone, get it now?
The best way to help is to be supportive by putting
You didn't get pregnant. You sound very self rightous and with I told you so attitude. A decision to carry the pregnancy, terminate it or give up for adoption is not one to be made lightly or out of guilt because someone forced their own opinions down the throat of someone who obviously needs help. Being condescending doesn't bolster her self image to find the courage to live with whatever decision she makes. She needs support, not degradation, not put downs, not made to feel worse than she already does. This is a decision she will live with every day...not one you will have on your mind every day of your life.
Knowledge knows when to speak. Wisdowm knows when to listen.
The tone was not supportive
I am sorry, but the message was completely overbearing and rude. There would have been many more ways to go about giving the message with being so mean about it. Why be rude to someone who is already upset. That just isn't right.
I'd love to see how supportive you'd be of this person
Because people like this don't make "a mistake," they make a lifetime of messing around in other people's lives and then looking for support and pity before going on to do it again and again.
Yes, and his team members were supportive, which will help. sm
I've been trying to think of where I saw Kelly LeBrock before -- wasn't she the one who did those commercials for the shampoo, saying "Don't hate me because I'm beautiful?" I might be thinking of someone else. I guess I'm showing my age, just by mentioning that commercial ... oops.
Excellent, supportive comment, Fly. :) nm

Just wanted to say "Thanks" for all the supportive posts...
I will let you know how the mammogram turns out. All prayers appreciated!
Your tone makes it very difficult to be supportive. nm

People are supportive in different ways. My style offends, I can see that. SM
All I am trying to say to CS (the original poster) is that her career self-esteem shouldn't be based on passing or failing the CMT exam and definitely career advancement has nothing to do with passing or failing the CMT examination. And nothing the AAMT has to offer is worth the price of admission to their association.
CS needs to have confidence in her skill level without looking for validation from an organization that has invalidated us all by endorsing the outsourcing of American jobs overseas.
She needs to realize her mistake now and not give any more of her money or time to the AAMT.
Stedmans Med $ Surgical Equip words, Path and Lab words, and Tessiers Surgical Word book (3rd
edition). I never buy drug books anymore. Waist of money in my opinion. New drugs come out so often, it's best to use the web.
The Sted's Ortho & Rehab Words is probably my most used book and then the Lab Words book. GL! nm

I broke my right ankle slipping on ice and was lucky to have gloves on because the palm of the glove was totally torn up and my hand was okay.
Good luck and be sure to do your exercises when it is time.
It'll happen. You'll find your fit.

I have two IC contracts right now. I recently went back to a job I had quit earlier in the year to work for the other company I am still working for.
The newer job has 80% ESLs. I transcribe OP notes primarily and I can fill in other work types as the opportunity arises. I am frustrated with this particular situation. After 6 months, I am making less money and working longer hours. I am past the learning curve and I should be doing better, at least in the number of hours I am spending doing the job. We have run out of work for 24 hrs at a time at least 5 or 6 times since December 1, and in November it was more than that. I have a friend who worked for this company as well and she was having similar difficulties. The only thing that we can figure is that they are shorting us line count some way, because after 6 months at it, it should be easier/faster/more money, but it is less and less every single pay period. It is not a nice thing to accuse a company of doing, but it SEEMS that way to us. I am fed up with being expected to type every single OP note that comes in 24/7 and meeting the 6 hr TAT for them on weekends, evenings, holidays, wee hours of the morning...
I took back a job I held for 2-1/2 yrs. The team leader has changed and this gal thinks that I should be on call 24/7 for whenever she has work. I might have some at 7 a.m., or perhaps not until 6 p.m. or later. I can't plan my personal life and between these two IC situations, I find that I am not eating on a daily basis, not showering on a daily basis and not sleeping more than 3 or 4 hours at a time. I have lost weight and I don't feel very well. I woke up today with a rip roaring head cold (my first in nearly 8 yrs) and it has already moved to bronchitis and I am expecting pneumonia by the weekend because I develop it very easily. I already have deep pain in my back.
Yes, I should call in sick tomorrow, but I really can't take the fallout. The job I took back I am covering for another gal who wanted vacation over the holidays and if I have to call in sick, the team leader will call me and pitch a fit about how this is my responsibility. It IS my responsibility, I did say I would do it, and I will do it, despite being quite ill. In the past, when I worked for this company, they would not allow me to call in sick for a "cold" without a doctor's note. I worked through many illnesses with them and only called in sick when I developed West Nile Fever and while I was sick for over a month, I only called for my last 12 reports one day when I could no longer see the computer screen because my head hurt.
The problem is that yes, many MTs lack work ethic. They don't take their responsibility seriously. This is not a work as you please career, not even for an IC. I can see the MTSO's point of view, I truly can. Like finding experienced, reliable and capable MTs, for the MTs who are these things, finding a company will treat you like a human being is equally difficult. I sit here, feeling lousy and like I am an utter slave labor with no consideration whatsoever. I know that my work needs to be done, but when I am this sick it is better that someone else do it for the sake of the work, for accuracy and for speed of getting it out. I know that I am needed, but to be the MT these companies need me to be, I also need to look after my own health.
I will also mention that when I have asked for vacation, I have been approved for the time, but the MTSO queues up my work and calls me then I am not on the system getting it done. I have told them I had been approved for time off, but the MTSO didn't schedule anyone to cover for me and I am told to get on work, vacation or no, if I want to keep my job.
Thus, I work 24/7/365 and have for years. I work sick, I work when I am in pain (I have an AI disorder), I work exhausted from staying up all night covering for others who are allowed to call in sick and have vacations when I can't have either. I work having no health insurance and not being able to afford the $125 a month to buy some with a high copay so I can see a doctor. I work without breaks for breakfast, lunch or dinner and I sometimes come close to having an accident because if I leave my desk to go to the little girls' room I get nasty calls about where I am at and what I am doing.
Many MTs are mistreated, and I am one of them.

Has anyone heard of a company called words, etc. from California and their rep, etc? Been offered position and just double checking. Thanks!
looking up words
Somebody recently mentioned a site where you can go and put a * in the part of the word that you can't get. Example:
ap*ectomy = appendectomy.
Can you tell me again where this site is? It's sooooooooo helpful!!
Thanks!
These were not my words. I merely
copied the paragraphs from a previous post, because the original poster was looking for the item about the "golden handcuffs". I don't necessarily agree with it. Just trying to help the original poster find what she/he was looking for.
But they were my words. How many of the
companies mentioned on this board call you within 3 weeks and give you a raise because you are producing high quality work and producing well? (Not a 1/4 cpl, but a 2 cpl raise.) How many tell you about new accounts and give you the opportunity to change if you want? How many have primarily non-ESL accounts with good dictators? How many have a tech support group that does not have an automatic response that everything is your fault and that can be reached almost immediately so you are not sitting waiting, or have a very productive and easy platform to work on? How many times have you gotten a nice letter telling you you are doing a great job? How many actually talk to the owner of the company or something above the level of a team leader? How many get very clear instructions for the accounts? How many provide good samples of the dictators? And yes, I get benefits as well plus bonuses for high production without asking.
The person who referred me for this job told me this is what the company was like, but I was so hesitant because I had worked for too many of the bigger companies and gotten the bait and switch, the cherry picker routine, no raise, horrible accounts, late pay.
Oh, Words...
I am afraid that's one of my problems--thinking I'll wait until the end but then forgotting. I am trying really hard to pay attention to every detail and then just be confident and let it go!

I have only said these same words for the last
whiney MTSO owners who want good MTs and only pay 8 cpl. Baloney, salami, rat's patootie, whatever. Deliver the work and the pay, and you'll get your reports and maybe even some help when you really need it the most. PAY MORE SMALL MTSOs, and you'll certainly get more in return!
Bad words
Years ago the doc quoted the patient using the F word. I WA so surprised. I pressed both hands over my ears, as if I hadn't heard it correctly and played it again. I typed it as said. I also remember my spell check did not recognize the F word. The doc also reported the mother to social services.

So in other words...
That is the correct price being offered on the exam there. However, we also offer that very same rate here in the US when we run promotions like our current Credentialing Cup.
So are you saying you got -150 words
aren't getting paid for what you DID type? 100 words minus 250 words? That comes out to -150 words. Is that what you are saying? If you got paid for what you typed, I don't see a problem with that...
Looking up words. I see sm
many posts asking for help with words or phrases that are clearly in reference books that most MTs should have. Don't MTs buy their own reference material anymore or do they rely strictly on the internet. Most the words and phrases asked about on the Word Board could be found just by buying the medical phrase index or the Surgical Word Book or some of these other word books and building up a reference library.
What happened to building up the library and searching and learning? I just looked at some of the Word Help stuff tonight and a lot of it is ridiculous stuff that an MT could very easily find.
Any opinions? Im not talking about blanks where you just can't understand what they are saying. I am talking about specific instruments and phrases. Seems like it happens an awful lot and MTs don't want to search or maybe don't know where to search or don't know what reference material is out there to buy?
Lots of this stuff could be found in just the two books I mentioned above. Just curious
in other words, the perfect job!
sorry to burst your bubble! I have, however, been on the same acct for over four years, but it runs scant these days, so I am on another acct, but I'm finally getting used to it. Can't use many macros though, cause very rarely have the same doc. How 'bout when you find "that" job, let us all know where it's at!!! Have a good day! Hey, what happened to winky!!!
thanks for the kind words - it does help...:)
I know lots of places are hiring, but I don't have enough experience for most of them and am afraid to jump from the frying pan into the fire....
Lab studies words
YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME! If you couldn't figure out that one, give it up!
Thanks for the engouraging words...
I've sent in my resume with several companies that have posted on this board, but no one has responded.
I realize they're probably bombarded with responses, but you'd think they could send out an automated generic email stating "we received your resume," or "we've filled all openings," or something...
I haven't posted my resume, but I will.
Also, I'm going to get out and look for my own accounts as soon as I can. Right now, I've just moved my parents in with me, and there are a lot of doc appointment for them, so I'm sort of stuck for the time being.
Thanks for the advice. :)
Thanks so much for the words of encouragement!!
I am going to take the job. I don't feel comfortable saying how much per line, but I am very excited to start.
