Take the time to make a list for a day of all the common editing tasks you do.

That should give you a good start for productive macros, then start making macros for those odd circumstances. BTW, Instant Text is great for handling these types of tasks. You can run your macros with a short form that makes sense to you or you can create "command" entries that make corrections--meaning that you can lump a whole bunch of keyboard shortcut commands into one entry. This is a great feature if you're queasy about creating macros.

Common Error List

Does anyone have a common error list that a new MT could use? I have been doing transcription for about 6 years now and am starting to edit a new MT's work. I know I had a common error list with another company I worked with, but I tossed it when I ended my contract (I know, never throw away a resource! I am kicking myself now). I just was curious if someone had one and was willing to share :0) Thanks in advance!

common error list
You might try a yahoo search for "common error list in MT." I am sure you will come up with something that could be helpful.
I found out a long time ago that there are two kinds of editing.. one is editing MTs work (like QA)
and the other is editing as in VR. I have done VR editing, but when I put down this as experience on a resume, I was asked by the HR person if this meant that I had "edited" other MTs work. I think there is a lot of confusion out there and I wish they would just keep that as QA instead of calling it editing. Just be clear in what you want to edit as most companies that expect you to "edit" other MTs in a QA position do require you have a lot of experience. If you just going for VR editing, which is what Transcend has available and there are a few companies out there doing VR, none of which I think really require much experience as it is easy to learn. Hope I made some sense and it can be pretty confusing on how companies use the term "editing" thus it effects their expectations as far as experience goes.
which is the most common that you use when flagging? do you include the time track?

Make a list
Make a list of what you love about him and what you hate and see which list is bigger.  You haven't mentioned a single reason for staying with this person.  Sometimes it's hard to make a break, but think ahead to days without stress and arguing.
I'd probably do it but you need to make a list - sm
of pros and cons to it versus your home IC job. Break it all down and then it should be clearer to you. I am currently thinking of getting out too, so I can have a life at home. All I do is sit at the computer, every day and night. My kids really hate it. I do break to help the kids out with homework and projects but sometimes it is hard to do so because I have a deadline to meet, and on those nights where I help them I end up staying up until 12 or 1, then getting up at 5:30 so I have an hour or so to work before getting them off to school. So I am generally always tired and then I work a lot slower. It sucks. So I am thinking of applying for an 8-5 job about 20 minutes away that is offering $30-42K that is right up my alley and which is a lot more than I make now. It will make things harder in terms of afterschool activities, Brownies, dance and twirling; but I guess if I am lucky enough to get a job offer I will have to see what I can work out at least for the Brownies (every other Monday at 3:15 at a location I have to drive them to); dance is not an issue as the school bus can take them there; and twirling is at their school; so not an issue except I'd have to leave work about 90 minutes early to pick them up unless my DH is around to do it (luckily this is only a temporary thing they are taking). So there are sacrifices to everything. In my case I would actually have more time with my kids and my stress factor would drop, my income would go up and I'd have some great benefits (state job). I am going to try for it as I have nothing to lose. If I get lucky enough to get this job I still plan to do MT, though only about 8-10,000 lines a month; gas money basically; but at least I can do it after the kids go to bed and still get to bed by 11. I am scared just to apply as things will change a lot here but again, I have nothing to lose by trying and can always say no.
Thank you so much. Will make a list of these.

Just make sure you are truly QA and not editing VR.

i buy almost all generic, make a list when i
go shopping and don't buy things that aren't on it (unless it's a necessity like t.p. or toothpaste.) plan ahead on meals and buy in bulk and freeze. it's just me and my 3 yo so we can get 2 almost 3 meals from one, that is if you can handle that much left overs. keep curtains closed in the rooms that get direct sun to keep them cooler-opposite in the winter. i don't buy extra 'goodies' like candy/chips/snacks. i'm really regretting that one today-i need a chocolat fix right now :)
only buy things on sale, if you must buy 'new' clothes wait until the end of the season and by then it's usually 60-70% off. buy gifts all year round when things go on sale, the person you're getting it for will never know plus if something comes up and you need something last minute, you've got it! the other things that i would consider a luxury i wait and use them as gift ideas for my family to get for myself and my son.
Does anybody make money VR editing?
I am considering taking a position doing this and I wonder if you can make a living at it. A poster below said that if you are a fast typist you will lose money, but if you are a 150-200 lph typist can you break even? I would like to hear from anyone who actually does VR editing either full-time or part-time. What's the scoop?
I make more editing or transcribing SM
depending on how the lines are being counted and how good the SR is at transcribing the dictator at a particular institution. Compensaton is particularly subjective and variable in editing, which offers opportunity for lowballing in a period when hospitals are pressuring hard to keep costs down.

I prefer editing, though.
As said, it's significantly easier on the wrists, you're a lot more productive, it's somewhat higher-level work and (if the job survives at all) likely to become more so, in part because only a high-skilled Editor can figure out the leavings of these very clever transcriptionist-computers. The days when a content slob with flying fingers was a valued MT are fast departing.
Every day I make a chore list. Nothing major, just...
one kid has to empty the dishwasher and take out the trash.  The other has to pick up the family room and vacuum it.  I make the list each day and leave it on the counter.  They aren't allowed to turn the television on until it is done.
I would list but make sure you put "do not contact."

And put your reasoning.  I looked around for another job and listed my present employer without instructing them not to contact and my supervisor had a fit.  She called and confronted me about it and wanted to know why I was looking.  I tried to explain I was looking for a part-time job to supplement, she told me it was against company policy for me to work anywhere else while I worked for them.  Then she refused to even give a reference for me.  She basically told me she wouldn't return the call to the HR rep who had called for a reference.  I was shocked at how personal my supervisor took it.

Just tread lightly and best of luck to you!

Do you find editing VR monotonous? Do you or can you make as much
money editing VR as you can doing straight transcription?   I've been offered an editing position doing 100% edit for a company that offshores and declined it, but needing a break from typing and wondering about VR.
Make a pros and cons list for each "position" -sm
Also, can your husband get a job where he carries the benefits so you don't have to kill yourself to ensure them. I am sure there will be weeks you won't meet your quota and say bye-bye benefits for a while. Also do you absolutely depend on the salary you make now? The odds are you will make less than you make now and have to pay SE taxes on that to boot. What was/is your cpl? How many hours of working did it take you to meet your daily requirement? Factor 80% ESL into that amount too if you are going to work for a national. Factor in interruptions from family since you would be at home, getting kids ready for school, meeting them at the bus (if you would do that), people calling, etc. Just remember you might be physically home but not available to "see" your family. I know my kids aren't thrilled that I always seem to be working, but part of that is my lack of discipline (which I am getting better bit by bit) and getting side-tracked because I don't want to work or I hate who I am transcribing so it takes me twice as long to do so I procrastinate (I type 10-20 minutes of dictation an hour normally depending on the doc). Yes, there are a lot of pluses to working at home, no gas (big+), no dressing up if you don't want to, possibly flexible hours (I don't work on a schedule), though you may have to work a schedule and STICK to it depends on who you are working for of course, my downside is getting side-tracked by this site, surfing the web, taking care of the animals (we have a 2 dogs, cat, hamster and 10 chickens), laundry, trying to clean, phone calls from the DH, trying to execise if I ever get motivated, burnout and not wanting to work. I am glad that I work at home, and we don't have to have the money I make so that makes it hard for me to stay motivated but I do like the work and keeping my brain active. I really think a list is the best way to go and be honest on it and think of every scenario you can of good and bad. Good luck.
You spending 3K in gasoline to make 4K plus all that time on the road? That doesn't make sense Pat

Administrative tasks are there

tapes.  I'm sorry to have to disagree, but the time spent picking up tapes is equivalent to the time spent uploading and downloading files.  Printing takes only a few minutes and the ink is a deduction.  Furthermore, just because you offer a digital service does not mean that you will never have to go into the office.  There are times when a digital account requires you as the MTSO to go in and be a "techie".  With a tape, you rewind it, and then you type it.  With digital, you must maintain an FTP, which also costs money and is probably the equivalent of gas.

Not only is "socializing" a great way to not become a "homely" MT in this business, but it is also a great way to network.  I know for a fact that a new office will probably move in where the office is that I transcribe for, and don't think for a minute in passing I may just drop off my business card.  Word of mouth and being "visible" is a good thing.  How many times do you hear on this board that MTs feel so lonely!  Completing the work from home is great, but also getting out in the public is a great way to build up your clientele.  I do agree that not all practices can afford the Nationals or want to bother.  They like to see "you" and give "you" feedback and know who is behind those reports at any given time.

These are administrative tasks that

I'm so tired of hearing the "poor MTSO."  Cut me a break!  Yeah, I have a big attitude, when most of these MTSOs are paying peanuts and demanding that ICs follow a schedule and also commit to a certain amount of lines.  I am so sick of it!  Don't worry yourself about MTSOs, they get their compensation or the wouldn't stay in the business!

If they want quality work and someone who is reliable, then pay more!

Macros are better suited to repetitive tasks like formatting.
I have a macro to create a different second page of a letter with header info., another one that will update formatting from documents created using a different Normal template so they conform with mine, another one for highlighting, etc. They really can be timesavers.
I need step-by-step instructions to make a macro in word that aligns automatic numbered list to the

I don't know if you'd make the trip in time. When my
mother was dying she died within 24 hours of her kidneys shutting down - by this I mean she quit producing urine.  She had cancer that has spready rapidly throughout her body so there may have been contributing factors involved.
So how much do you make for the time you spend
*Enquiring minds*, and all....
I make about 35 K part-time to

I have one of my own accounts and sub for a local contractor at a high rate.  I also work for one online company that is flexible but the work is low.  I'd feel better not giving the name because I feel that is personal.

to OP:  you might want to try asking about specific companies or asking about companies that offer what you are looking for.

You may be getting flack because salary is a personal thing with tons of variables.  Even though the posters seem like they are coming off hard the truth of the matter is that everyone is different and everyone has a different work situation.

Sure, I have bills to pay and I am expected to bring in an income, but my husband is the breadwinner and he also has the health insurance.  I still feel pressure to do as much as possible but my main goal is to make sure the kids are taken care of and their appointments, etc.  If I was at home all day with no worries regarding two school-aged kids, I'm sure I'd easily make 60 K or more and need subs if I were to market myself as an MTSO.  But I prefer to stay an IC and not use subs.

I don't know if this helps at all, but it is my answer.

Editing is the higher skill. I earn more editing SM
because I'm able to produce more--if the company doesn't adjust the way production's figured down and down again to keep the account from going elsewhere (when that happened to me on EditScript with no explanation of why my income was dropping, I went elsewhere also).
Don't it stink? LOL. MT blooper in there - the same one I make EVERY TIME. nm

I make lunch ahead of time and

my child has never complained about the bread being hard.  Maybe because we use 100% whole wheat and it is already kind of dry?  I have just never heard that complaint from anyone

I make lunch right after clearing up dinner and that way if we all oversleep by accident, at least its one less thing to have to worry about.  We have enough stress in the morning.

I guess it is time to make a stand...
I just received my first subscription via E-mail to Advance Health Magazine.

CAN YOU BELIEVE THEY ACTUALLY HAD TWO ADVERTISEMENTS IN IT FOR HIRING INDIA MTs?

These are about 1/4 of a page size. One is from CBAY, which is Spheris, which is their 100% India company. Bragging a 30% decrease in costs to hospitals.

This not only threatens American MTs with losing jobs outright, but it also UNDERCUTS us. This is why we are making less money, less benefits, and needing to work harder.

I sent an E and cancelled immediately. Actually, I had been considering it for a while because of a bit percentage of their Medical Transcription articles are pro- undercutting American MTs, anyway, just like AAMT.

In my opinion, WE ARE BEING SOLD-OUT, AND BEING SOLD-OUT BY AAMT as they push harder and harder to make money any way they can, even by supporting Indian MTs, who are probably being told they "have" to join their organization...

They have been trying to force American MTs to become certified to fill their pockets and position themselves for the future as a monopoly. However, it seems American MTs are not as easily led as in India, so they flip-flopped. If you can't beat them, join them, right?

I am so disgusted. Last month they had an article from someone encouraging companies to hire American MTs and I was so hopeful, but this made me sick, to get it in my E-mail.

Time for me to make a stand. My job is worth fighting for and I need it...
Anybody make less than $12,000/year, part time - sm
I know at just part time (minimum 25 hrs a week) I won't be pulling in a ton of $, but I thought it would be a little more than that.  Am I alone?
I make $2-3/hr (we are ICs paid for talk time only)
We are ranked. If you aren't in the top ran you do not get as many calls.
I wrote out a longer message but for some reason it didn't post.
Maybe it's time to push for legislation to make
.
If I worked full time I would make
at least $40,000 per year at my job. I only work part because just tired of working all the hours I have in the past. The majority of my work is VR (about 95%) and straight but am fast. I don't have a lot put in Expanders but do well over 3000 lines per day total.
If I worked full time I would make
almost $35,000 a year, made more than that in the 80s, just do not want to work full anymore.
Many sites make additions to better their site all the time without

doing anything out of the ordinary.  MTStars always strives to provide better service.

I would quit. I work part time and only make about
$250 a week.  Just having become a grandma would influence my decision! I can't keep my hands off the little one!  1K a week would suite me just fine!  To bad I don't play the lottery.
Ask him next time to start a new file and not make it so large.

Happens all the time. Make phone calls for more definite action. nm

I *only* make $40K a year for full time work. Now I find that isn't decent is or fair?

Common phrases. LOTS of common phrases, just like ops. SM

pser = the patient was seen in the emergency room

wwd= the wound was dressed

Just two tiny examples. People need to learn to use their Expander programs. I'd be making like $10 per hour without mine. I also work in a job where I do the work type I do best. That's very important. I would imagine (don't know for sure) that H&Ps and DSs have the most lines (I work on a gross line count) but you have to think more, look up more, and type more to get those lines.

I have everything magicked in there. That's the way I like it, that's the only way I will work.

Question about Editing for those who do editing
What would you consider to be  the average amount of lines a day of editing based on a 65 space line in an 8 hour day.  If you can do an average of 1200 straight typing what would be the expectation for a day of editing?  What do you think is a fair rate of pay for that editing? Do you know of companies that offer a tiered incentive rate for editing rates to do most of them offer a flat rate for lph?   Do you find you make more money,  less money or about the same than straight typing?  Thanks to anyone who is willing to share this information.  Feel free to email if you would rather share by email.
VR editing versus MT editing pay

Greetings,

How does VR editing prod. pay compare to hourly pay ($15) regular QA and constantly being threatened to start being payed production.  Are there any special tricks to know to make good money on a VR program?  Any companies that have VR and are better than other ones would be appreciated as well.  Any and all assistance much appreciated-have to make a change shortly, so looking for a great company that offers ins. benefits.  Thanks for your time.

medical abbreviation list and medical drug list
Hi,

Anyone there who could help me out finding the latest abbreviations list.
I even want the latest drug list because my current program does not have many drugs.

So if anyone could suggest anything which is available online for informationd quick look purposes.

any help for medical abbreviation list and medical drug list would be very helpful.

You have a lot in common with him then
for what's making you so angry about your own poor life choices.
We have something in common
I also had a hysterectomy at 28, but my ovaries were gone at 27. It was hell for the first 6 weeks but I went on the hormone therapy...then came the first warnings  about taking them, so I stopped them.  I still have night sweats once in a while, but I can live with it. Now that I'm in my late 50s, seems my body wants to do it all over again. I'm getting hot flashes and all the other goodies that come with the change. Hey! What's going on here???

I mean, 18 YO girls having breast implants, nose jobs...come on, that's for looks and nothing more. But hey, if you can afford it, don't mind pain, and it makes you feel better about yourself, I say go for it...I'd love to have a boob lift... can they do that?

Not only is it not common.

it is very common that many MDs.....NM

Yes, very common that PAs are some of the
most horrible dictators. I also find they routinely murder drugs and dosages, diagnoses, etc. Really cringe when I get PA dictations, and, though I am of the same gender, usually the awful ones are women, and really do come across with an attitude - at least via audio!
Yep, it can be and is quite common!
I did my first year of transcription on a laptop with external keyboard and mouse.
Can be very common
I've been struggling to find the right fit for a very long time. I try not to put all eggs in one basket because even good MTSOs can lose their accounts - on the other hand finding two or more accounts to work with concurrently is a huge pain -While payment on time is paramount for me too (I have no parents to borrow from :( but so are: a decent platform, fair and competent management, and consistent work flow. You are lucky if you get 2 out of 4. But many will post a different experience (4 out of 4) so you must take all this with a large grain of salt.

You might want to consider supplementing a job as a teacher with a part-time opportunity as an MT - the best of both worlds. Of course, you could offer the MTSO you currently have the opportunity to remedy the paycheck problem before losing you (get your back up set up first though... :)

common

I applied at a hospital for a office job. The position had already been filled. They called me back and asked if I was interested in working in the kitchen washing dishes. Of course this was not my first choice as far as jobs go, but I really needed the job. I took it part time. The day after that I was offered a part time office job at an insurance company. I took that one too. The insurance company was wonderful, and I was able to work the two jobs around each other. In a few months a temp office job opened up at the hospital, because I was on the inside, I was one of the first people to know of the job opening. Hospitals usually hire from the inside first. If they do not fill the job, they advertise it to the public. I do not think that you were being insulted in any way. I guess how you look at it mostly depends on how bad you need a job. When you have to have one, any job looks good. Sometimes we are lucky enough to be in a position to be picky.
