a link in their ads about where to go to test. You'll get a feel then about how good your education are. You'll certainly have blanks and you'll probably get a bad dictator or an ESL, which is the norm these days, but it will still give you a sense of things. I've had nearly 20 years' experience I still have an occasional blank and I have to spend some time researching a new drug, equipment, or procedure at least a couple of times a month, so you never stop learning.
You'll find when you start out you keep your reference books piled up beside you and Google is your best friend. You'll probably look something up twice for every report and then you'll only to have look something up twice a day, etc. The thing to do is make lists when you have a new word/drug so that you have it posted somewhere where it is handy if it should come up again and you don't spend a lot of time looking it up.
You also need to have a good reference library. I know some only use google, but at least 1/4 of what is on goggle is incorrect and unreliable, and you need the proper tools for the job. A community college course, if taken in person and not on-line, can be completed in less time than a course that is all on-line/correspondance generally.

I really hate it when I answer a blind ad and afterwards I have to tell the person that they are not offering enough compensation for me to work on their account.
If they need weekend coverage, maybe that should be handled by a weekend-only IC. And if the MTSO has to hire 3 MTs to jump in the work pool (usually with a prn hanging in the eves) on Saturday and clean it up, then the work gets done. The M-F gals are happy, and the weekend MT looking for extra work (because some accounts don't have weekend work - especially clinic accounts) on the weekend is happy, too.
I work the weekend sometimes, both days. But I typically steer completely away from account ads that have the shifts delineated Tues-Sat 1st, 2nd, or 3rd shift.
This is a labor-management issue that needs to be worked out amicably. Too many times MTSOs are bad-mouthing ICs and ICs/SEs/Es are bad-mouthing MTSOs. We aren't at odds. The MT is benefitted by hitting TATs with hopefully job security, and surely we all understand that we are all together on contract performance. This is supposed to be a symbiotic relationship and if you do get an MT who flakes, then have an extra to cover it. Management shouldn't browbeat the MTs who are dependable.

MT companies without line count req.
Does anyone know of any MT companies that do not require a specific weekly line count and lets you set your own hours (part-time)? I need something about 10 to 15 hours a week. Thanks.

Been doing this for 10 years for a company - now am an editor, but the pay is worse than an MT typically makes. Thinking of going back to typing if I can make more money - which would mean making at least 9 cents a line (like I used to). Anybody know any good companies?
many companies using a "gross line" have the maximum
line length at 94 to 106 characters to get a line, which is almost the equivalent of 2 full lines of 65 counted character text. You have to check out the font they use, the margins, etc., and then determine what is better.
Whatis the averge line per day for big companies?
What is the AVERAGE line per day for radiology or line per hour for radiology? Average being the key word. I know this has been discussed but after 10 years I finally know what my average is.

that want to send their work overseas and train them to transcribe it. I want to know why the moderators feel it is okay to post jobs from spheris and healthscribe and others that were mentioned in the article when they undoubtedly hire us in the US until they can train more transcriptionists overseas and then leave us high and dry.
You can't post the names of companies. The powers that
be always delete them. I know I had to answer some questions concerning a Pell grant I got at a local technical school once. I don't think this is so far fetched.

It absolutely is a way to cut an MT's line count since most companies don't pay for headers,
footers, and anything in the template. This one of the BIG reasons why I decided to give up working for the nationals. I bit the bullet and went back to work in the office for a while and then finally I found a job with a hospital that allows me to work at home, pays me hourly plus incentive, and doesn't try to cheat me out of my line count.
I just always felt like I was working my rear end off lining the pockets of the MTSO's while they nickeled and dimed me to death!
That's my 0.02 cents worth!

also lodge complaint with BBB in their state, their state's atty. general, PayPal, and any other internet consumer watchdog you can find (there are a lot) Be sure the company knows you are doing it. Your bank should be able to supply you with information about their company if they have already taken your money.

I've been screwed over by the big phone companies too, but once you switch to a business line,
a lot more options are opened up to you. Talk America has an unlimited long distance business line for $49.95. I've been with them for over a year now. I also tried calling cards, which are an even bigger rip off.
Two companies, both 65 char lines including spaces, one pays 0.10/l and the other 8.5/gross line. n

I'm suddenly a "mom" again at the age of 45 when my daughter got tired of playing mommy and I don't know where she is now. I was one month in with a new company, who has been very supportive of what I'm doing, but it is a lot different since I didn't have 9 months to prepare for it. I'm getting into a routine of working before she gets up, when she naps and at night she does get her Barney and other videos where she is actually learning things BUT, I am losing sleep, I don't feel comfortable letting the TV babysit and I don't have a support network. I'm single, no family.
She will start in a mother's day out program 3 days a week next week and I think I can put together a reasonable schedule until August when she can go 5 days a week, 5 hours a day.
I don't feel guilty for my decision and don't feel "strangers" at daycare will be giving kisses that I should be giving. Why is it that in Europe several generations of a family raise the new ones and everyone in the villages know everyone and help out but not here in the US and then people demean those who use daycare. The support network is different and lacking in this country.
Sorry, I'm weary...going to bed if I can get princess to agree...

and what company to help turn things around in this industry, meaning, the 4,5,6,7,8 9 etc per line which is grossly under paying if one takes the time to figure, how many lines, how many lines per hour, per minute, per second to make HOW MUCH PER HOUR. This is the key, how much per hour you make.
With a list of where to refer to, it helps curb this slave labor mentality.
THE MTs NEED A SECTION ON THIS BOARD to list going rates so the industry becomes more competitive and not at our expense with all this " supply 3 phones, supply long distance TO THEM. BUY THIS AND PROVIDE THIS TO THEIR COMPANY. Buy this license, this software.

Now substitute the phrase "single mother" for "black person", so the sentence would read: "She has really messed things up for this black person."
Now tell me you wouldn't believe somebody was playing the race card if they wrote that? It's the same with the "single mother" crap. The difference is that a person can't choose what race they belong to, but a single mother DOES have a choice. They can choose to:
A) Keep their legs closed.
B) Use multiple forms of birth control simultaneously to avoid getting pregnant.
C) Get sterilized.
D) Be more selective about who they sleep with.
or
E) All of the above.
So, it's not a matter of interpretation; she was playing the "single mother card" the same way some people get accused of playing the "race card". A pity party is a pity party, no matter who it's coming from.
I can't believe how bad some of the tests are!
Some test where you put commas (for which there are few real-world rules) and other BOS nonsense. Some count off if you didn't transcribe the patient's name and other private information (that you'll send to them via e-mail). Few actually test the skills required to be successful at real-world MT. Many tests only answer one question: "Have you memorized all the personal preferences found in the BOS or not?"

I've taken them that take as little as half an hour to as much as 4 hours. I think they are a good idea.

Any company that doesn't test? There has to be a better way than wasting all this time.

Just have the employee perform the expected tasks. If the person cannot do so...then good-bye... It's very simple....

I agree on the tests. Right now I don't have a foot pedal because mine were always furnished before. I won't buy one until I know it is compatible with any given company. Ever try the test with the foot pedal. Takes hours. I just refuse to try it any mroe.

 Anyone testing/tested with Transolutions? Why is it that the first of four transcription tests are easy breezy? The remaining tests have me backed in a corner. If/when I actually get a job, I hope the transmission is better.
A gross line is anything on a line is a line. A line set at 65 characters means it sm
has 1-inch margins on each side. The maximum number of characters on that line would be 65 and that includes spaces. If there is 1 character on that line it is a line.
A standard 65-character line usually consists of 65 characters with spaces unless, of course, the employer does not pay for spaces and then it would be 65-characters without spaces.
also, most docs won't do certain tests (sm)
without your consent, if they are not considered standard and will probably have to be paid for by the patient out of pocket, unless the patient agrees to pay either up front or if the charge is denied. At least that's been my experience! Good luck, I hate insurance companies, too!

NCLB and tests.
I am in Alabama and my husband works for the school system. Not only is the school rated in many ways by how well the students do on the tests, but the individual teachers are as well. I agree that there should be a way to evaluate teachers/schools, but NCLB has really burdened the system. Also, teachers cannot simply teach. They have an ungodly amount of evaluation material they have to complete and report to the various agencies involved. This is on computer, and last I heard they are not supposed to take it home. I have actually seen some of this "paperwork" and it goes way past ridiculous. I know there are bad teachers out there, but considering what they make and what they have to deal with, there is on way I would be one. Consider also that there are students who simply refuse to be taught, and others who even the best teachers cannot reach. Their scores count just as much as the students who really want to learn. Do the teachers "teach the tests"? Of course they do. If your entire livelihood was based on how well you knew the Book of Style, what would MT schools be teaching?
I took tests with footpedal. If using
Windows Media Player, have to keep hitting the play and rewind buttons with the mouse. Very time consuming but doable. Good Luck on your test!!
Transcription Tests
Has anyone tested for any companies, passed their test and was never contacted after the initial email stating that you had passed their test? I wonder why we bother to take hours out of our day to take tests and then never get contacted. I recently took a test, which the company had informed me that I had passed. However, two emails later I am still waiting to be contacted by them. They keep telling me shortly. This was two weeks ago. Anyone else with this dilemma?

Here's the thing--there ARE other companies out there looking for transcriptionists, lots of them. I always try to followup ASAP on people who apply because they've usually applied other places too and if I don't grab them somebody else will. I wouldn't bother following up any more, find another company. There are lots of us who are looking for conscientious transcriptionists.

Blanks in tests
Hi!
I am looking for an opinion please. I have been taking my very first at-home test(hoping to come home and leave the politics behind). I was wondering if it would be counted against you if there was a blank in the one of the trascrption samples. My current employer prefers blanks to guesses but then again they are familiar with their employees' strenghts and weaknesses.
Any advice welcome.
Sometimes those giving the tests
deliberately give you a difficult dictator or bad-quality dictation to see what you will do. When in doubt, leave a blank. It's not such a big deal, as you will become familiar with the dictator/account & will have samples to go by. I'm always curious though if I leave a blank and will ask and either say, "oh that's what it was," or "I'd have never gotten than in a million years, what in the world?." Good luck on your test!
The problem w/ the digital tests is that...
you cannot read them manually, i.e., the faint line after you pop the stick off the reader. Those lines don't mean the same thing as the standard tests that shows lines for pregnant or not pregnant. I would take another test first thing in the morning and see what the results say.

I just finished a long total knee arthroplasty and it sounds like this doc had a few cocktails before he began dictating. Slurring his words and changing his mind several hundred times. Don't ya just hate that?
Just had to vent cause I have him again. I am ready for a cocktail or 2 myself now.
