I always use a number sign in front of single digit suture sizes to make it obvious what is meant. #0 Vicryl, #1 Vicryl. I think that "1 Vicryl suture" can easily be misread as one Vicryl suture. I never use a hyphen and don't know if it is acceptable or not, but looks better than not having anything.
