other MT message boards
I was just wondering how many of you go to other MT message boards and if this is your favorite.  I have lots of them posted on my favorites but this is the only one I check every day.  Once in a while I might check the others but I'm usually bored after a few minutes.  How about the rest of you? 
staying away from message boards
Two years into MT I found message boards.  I had some small complaints about my job and was kind of in a love/hate stage of my relationship with MT.  Reading the boards with people complaining so much really put me more in that frame of mind to the point where I started hating my company and hating transcription in general.  When I left the job I had at the time and started a new one I vowed no more message boards because I felt they had poisoned my attitude, which was easily influenced at that time.  I stayed completely off message boards for the next five years and now am back (obviously), but that gave me enough time to get more established with my company and actually know and like my career enough that reading a lot of MT complaints doesn't bother me now.
I think it's because most of the ones who post to the message boards

FYI on links from message boards
Please be careful when opening links from anyone on the MT boards. I had a word question and posted it to XXXXX (this is the board that the company I work for prefers us to use). Instead of answering my question, someone posted to look at the link that they listed. This link had the answer to my question, but it also transmitted spyware/problem to my computer. Just a warning, especially for new MTs - I had to learn the hard way - and am going back to my books instead of searching the internet or message boards for answers to my questions.
Shorthand works for me on message boards. nm

I've transcribed for some, and generally they couldn't dictate properly if someone held a loaded gun to their head.  As I was transcribing, I told myself, "I wouldn't let my worst enemy be seen by these clowns!"  Some of them are very scary, indeed!


 


Message for those who aren't mothers...sm

I hope you made it through the day yesterday without it  bothering you that  you're not a mom.  For many years I'd try to avoid going to the stores around Mother's Day and having clerks say "Happy Mother's Day" and avoid church because of the Mother's Day recognition because it emotionally stung that I wasn't married or a mom.   My heart breaks for a good friend who had a miscarriage 2 years ago and is now infertile as she hates the "happy mother's day" wishes as it brings up the sad emotions.    I can't even begin to imagine how painful that must be for her and others who have shared the same misfortunes.


 I'm now 43 and am now a foster mom so while I don't have any biological children  I do have a precious child living with me.    I'm sure that her mom was sad yesterday that she chose drugs over raising her child and lost custody because of drugs, but I am grateful that  I'm able to use my motherly ways with her.


Message for those who aren't mothers...
I have 2 goldens, 1 Shelties, and 3 cats. Do they count? I love them and they love me! I buy them food and fix their meals. In the evening they get a pseudo raw diet and marrow bones. I take the dogs to obedience, agility, and handling classes. I bring them to the vet. I make sure they have plenty of tennies (tennis balls) and woobies (toy they can rip the stuffing out of) give them unwanted baths, cut toenails, scoop up the yard, play with them, give ear scrunches, belly rubs, give out meds to Taz Duh Golden (dumber than a box of rocks) who has severe heart disease (subaortic stenosis and cor pulmonale), and my heart is torn when any of them make their journey to the Bridge.

So, in a way, I am a mom. Only difference.....mine have 4 legs and not 2.

but I have personally seen the benefit of talking to store managers. At one store I shopped (yes, a chain) I explained that I wanted to buy Silk soy milk. He was offering 3 other brands, but not Silk. I explained that he didn't need those 3 brands; he could replace them all with Silk and his sales would go up. HE DID IT! And I was right because sometimes he'd run out and we Silk buyers would start lining up, looking for our Silk!

Another time I complained to a store that that their floors were sticky every Sunday and they weren't culling their soft fruits adequately. Problem solved. So NEVER think communicating your expectations with a store doesn't work. A smart manager or company realizes that responding to consumer feedback can keep customers!

So how dare you tell people that writing letters doesn't work. It can, and you won't know until you try.


regarding MQ wanting e-mail from supervisors, etc. Why? Who cares what supervisors want?
It's like little kids wanting recognition from their parents.  These supervisors for the most part are anonymous.  Who really cares about e-mails from them unless they are offering more money or a bonus?  There is nothing else I care to hear from them.  I do my work with or without them.  I figure everytime I get a supervisor e-mail, I am paying for it with my time and I am also paying that supervisor to state the obvious, either the account is behind or caught up.  Really, I am paying the supervisor's salary. 
Buy if from your husband. Have him write you a receipt. Write it off completely or
depreciate it over a few years.

Wrong! Not a Spheris employee. Blank is a deficiency no matter how you look at it. Supervisors are just that, almighty and then some. It was just strange that all of the sudden she totally stopped emailing any and all of us with the corrected report and went through the supeeee. All I can figure is someone didn't like what she did or had to say and reported her to the supeeeee. With that said, I can comment that in rec'g her corrected copies, I did notice some areas where it's that situation where you need to be flexible. She used, yes, believe it or not, a : (colon) for military time......not! She would actually change this on our reports. I don't think so. There is your way, my way, the correct way, and the flexible way. Military time does not have a colon, nor does it have a.m., p.m. or o'clock following that time. So yes, I did question that and of course, no response from the per say, QAer, but the super said most do not. Most? What do you mean most? No colons whatsoever. Am I wrong here or is this a preference?

I don't know you, you don't know me, I thought this board was about helping others.
I don't know what the big deal is. I guess people either get irritated if someone is making more than them? I don't mind at all, I want everyone to get what they deserve while also loving their job.
I don't want to get screwed, however, and have no one else to ask! and I didn't ask anyone else's salary, I just asked if mine was appropriate to ask for!!!

Jealousy, bitterness over an anonymous MT poster who SAYS

they are going to be a friggin doctor but has time to post here?   Hardly.  Let's keep it real here.  How does one develop "doctor envy" for an MT who posts on MT Stars or who SAYS they are successful.  That's just plain BS and you know it doncha?  Who are you trying to kid.  Bwaaaaahaaaaaa


Picture this.  A doctor wannabe who obviously should be in pre med classes and at the very least making money for her education is on MT Stars posting.  Yeah right.  And I am jealous?   What planet do you spend most of your time on?

New supervisors at MQ
I had an email from my new supervisor asking me to call her at my convenience. I did, we talked 20 minutes or so. I was surprised. This has happened in a long time, but I personally haven't had changes in supervisors for a while now.

I know my job very well and the supervisors are coming to me for the correct information. The only time you see them is when they can't figure it out or to let you know they are still the boss.

It would be nice to have a supervisor I know a little bit about, but she just sends out job number updates and asks for extra help when we get close to out of turnaround.  When I do call for a question or something, her attitude is more or less "just get off the phone and get work done" and I just have no idea who she is.  Its scary knowing someone like that is in charge, someone who does not want to take the time to go over whatever problem you have and listen, its like we're disposable or something.  Used to be different before we all got dispersed by region, my main office I could call and chit chat and get favors and it wasn't all about me working my butt off for them, but give and take so both parties are happy.  I don't know, its just getting weird.

Good for you. Even though supervisors and/or
they DO NOT because there is a click among them.  If an MT is let go from hospital A and applies to hospital B (in the same state/area) you better believe that A and B supervisors are "girlfriends."  I personally am waiting to run into my old supervisor (hopefully with her husband or grown kids) so I can find out if she is still cheating on her husband.  Payback is a B**** and she was nothing but a W***E.

Your are right. All from India. Supervisors communicate via IM.
Communication is difficult at best. Pay is penalized for anything below 98%, which would be fine if your QA work was not done by people in India. You can only imagine what your checks look like. Not pretty.
Hateful notes from supervisors
Some of these supervisors and MTSOs must be the most unhappy people in the world and must hate themselves.  No way a normal person could send out horrible hateful notes to their staff.  Wish they would get some professional help, just for their own sake.
What traits do successful supervisors have?

I want to know what I can do to become the best supervisor possible. Personally, I have had only one great supervisor in all my years and what I found is that she displayed, fairness, objectivity, a sense of humor, consistency.  Can you tell me what your idea of the perfect supervisor is? 


You have no idea what the other MTs behave like! The supervisors have learned thru
experience by your fellow nut-case MTs to stay away - leave them alone.  Seriously, you would be amazed, absolutely AMAZED, at the rash of hate emails that would be generated back if some poor supervisor tried to be pleasant and dropped all MTs a Hello note! Its SICK, but true. I can totally relate, and am too afraid to contact anyone. Even MTs who seem friendly - they'll thank you for introducing yourself, and turn right around and rip you to a superior for harassment. ITS UNREAL OUT THERE!!  If I were you, I would really take the high road and just send your new supe an email and introduce yourself!!  He/she would probably really be touched. Again, nothing personal - no, you don't want them on your doorstep, but I assure you, there is a reason you're not getting any introductory emails! Its called the MTs have set the stage for this by their freakish behavior en masse in the past!

Yeah, an anonymous message board so they are a supervisor if they say so, just as I say I'm an editor.  Supervisors do what they are TOLD to do by their bosses.  Period. Any company - any industry - any planet.  Oh, yeah, a supervisor is gonna read here that a grand total of 2 anonymous MTs from unknown companies want to get friendly introductory emails.  This supervisor is gonna learn from this and go to his/her boss and say she should send friendly emails causing whining anonymous posters on MTStars said they want it?  You are too funny! And if you a supervisor who would do this, I guarantee you won't be one for long!! You'll be back down at the bottom of the food chain, probably at a new company, wondering why your new supervisor isn't sending you a friendly email!! And would the supervisor who read that 2 Mts wanted to hear from their supervisor also ignore that the masses then flamed supervisors and said they NEVER wanted to hear from their supes? The only thing a supervisor would glean from this board is how the fish in the bottom of the pond fight and bite and eat each other!  No one with an half ounce of intelligence in a supervisory position is gonna come here for YOUR help! Now that is funny!!  This board has a reputation for being the lowest of the low in the world of MT boards. Don't flatter yourselves!

the others think they are buttering up her good side, to get what they think they want and trying to make others look bad. That happens even on this board, as I had said earlier, before my post was removed. Supervisors fall on one side of the fence or the other, just as well as lay people. Personally, I wouldn't trust any of them. Just do your job and turn a deaf ear and blind eye to all the office politics. Things will be better down the road. Trust in that. Good luck to you.

If I work during the day I get junk dictation, if I get on later or after midnight the work is normal. These people you call "leads" have to type too and are at an advantage to get the best dictation. I guess they feel this is a bennie. They can't see our face so what do they care, we are like a number in Auschitz to them.

do I need their's.  We all just want to get paid if you are honest.  I don't have time to worry if I am appreciated by MQ.  I just want them to pay me for an honest day's work.  I guess that shows they like me, they really, really like me.  Talk is cheap.  I get it all the time from MQ CEO/management, how much I am appreciated.  I just want to paid for my time and don't want to hear all the talk.  I mean who really cares.  So if they appreciate me and don't pay me for my efforts, what do I do with this "appreciation"?  Bank it?
