Is Radiation/Oncology a difficult specialty? I am going to be starting..SM
on a new account doing this specialty. I was wondering if anyone has any helpful hints for this specialty. Any know of any references that would be good for me to use? Are there any websites that would be good as reference? Any help would be greatly appreciated. TIA.

I love my hematology/oncology account...
Yes, it isn't easy, but it is very, very interesting. Also, I have never really found it depressing. I "see" the same patients in followup over the years. Many never have recurrences and are cancer-free after 10-15 years. Sure, some do and undergo further treatment, but I always like to think I am helping in some small way by accurately transcribing their records. I feel like I know some of these patients personally, and I route for them all along the way.

Hi, I just recently went out on my own and am doing a bit of typing for my ophthalmologist. What I did was got an FTP site, which was very inexpensive and then bought a couple of older digital recorders. He dictates, his secretary downloads the recorder, sends it to my ftp site and then I just go into it, download the files, type them using Express scribe, which is free except for the cost of the foot pedal and then once the dictation is complete I upload it to the ftp site and they download and type. It is very easy and I think they like this. My only costs were the ftp site, which is cheap, a foot pedal I bought on ebay and headset, the ftp software, again inexpensive and a couple of older Olympus digital handhelds. I have even seen the most recent Olympus wav. recorder at Target for about $45. It is an investment, but I plan to branch out and then I will only be typing for myself and not the other company I type for as an IC

Just give yourself some time to get used to them. You will eventually start to build your speed.
I don't understand why everyone gets so uptight about ESL docs. My accounts are about 90% ESL and I actually prefer some of them to the English speaking docs.
It just took some time to get used to them. I have been on this account for awhile now and average over 2000 lines in an 8 hour day. Sometimes I get a lot more and sometimes a little less.
I should also mention that this is about 75% VR. Today I did about 2700 lines with a little more than 200 minutes of dictation.
The best advice I can offer you on the ESL doctors is to make yourself samples or request some samples to refer to until you don't need them anymore.
Any tips on becoming an MTSO and landing first account?
How much experience does the average MTSO have when they step out on their own?

Give her some organizational tips
Tell her to keep a schedule herself and check them off as they print of. If they don't print, they're not dictated. If they are losing and shredding notes, they need a new system for filing their dictation lol.
I need suggestions of something I can give my husband....sm

I've already bought him a very nice watch, necklace and bracelet over the time we've been dating/engaged and am having a hard time coming up with a great special gift for him. He's not into sports and we already have theatre tickets to see the musical Chicago a week after our wedding. I want to give him something that he can keep forever. Do any of you have any ideas?
I do when starting on a new account - it's amazing how helpful it can be in picking up silly (sm)
errors, but once I'm comfortable with the account I don't bother. When I do relisten, I jack the speed way up so it goes a little quicker.

Starting pay is 6 cents a line, fairly good account stability.
I had lots of ESLs. Benefits are okay. They have a new, stricter QA policy in place with new compensation, hard to get a 98 or above as it is by the BOS. It was okay, but couldn't make any decent money. Need to be a super high producer.
I just picked up a UK account. I need a spellcheck for british medical. Any suggestions?

I don't think anyone is saying give up a tape account but
I think what started this whole thing is a person asking about how to go about getting a new account, picking up tapes, how much to charge for paper or whatever. In that case, I think OP should research the options out there and start with the approach to go digital first, then accept a tape account only if you have to. Of course you don't give up an account. No way. Never. Ever.

Yes, the amount of lousy dictators seem to grow every day. The MTSO will focus on finding MT's that can and will type them, and keep the account vs cater to one good MT, IMO.

Radiation oncology vs. hematolog/oncology
I have experience with hematology/oncology but not radiation oncology. What exactly is the difference? Is it a difficult jump from one to the other? Broad learning curve? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I've never had a problem switching from account to account.
The problem I had was being switched too soon. If I don't get one account spec solidly in my memory with QA feedback on mistakes before starting another, I get confused. The other problem I had with former jobs was inconsistent QA. One person tells you one thing, another person tells you another.
Lately, I don't have a problem with it. Right now, my binder has 8 account specs (some I've never had to use) and I'm picking up a new weekend job for a while. The terminology and report formats stay basically the same. It's just all those little preferences. LOL

i have been through some rough times lately and had to apply for some help. there are signs, big signs, all over our offices saying "YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE LEGAL TO GET HELP". so we and our government do give them our benefits whether they are legal here or not. now that is messed up. i am helping to support them so they can take away my jobs and i can't even support my kids and yes i get benefits, wow $75 a month in food stamps which lasts not even a week in a household of 6. don't get me wrong, i am thankful for any help at the moment, but i get penalized for trying to work my tail off and still can't survive.
there was recently an article in our local newspaper where one of our local school districts tried to charge $1000 a year for each illegal student enrolled. it was bulked and the illegals got a lawyer to sue for discrimination. the school district merely stated that they had to HIRE extra teachers that could speak the foreign language just to teach these children and were trying to offset some of the expenses. ridicilous!! so again our taxpayers money is paying to educate illegals as well.

I really did not mind it that much at all. Much easier to me than orthopedics and physical therapy notes. I did have Stedman's Oncology word book, as well as the internet. I agree with the other poster, the hardest was the chemotherapy protocols, but there many resources to help with this.
Oncology because there are new
drugs/protocols all the time. Psychiatry because it can be very depressing after a while.

Hi, I work at an oncology clinic. Our transcriptionists are paid hourly and make between 11.50 to 14.75 per hour. I've always heard radiology is the best pay because of the short length of the reports. Some oncology notes can run 10 minutes. It is an enjoyable specialty though.

I am actually intrigued by all of the neat things they have done to help with cancer, and people are not suffering or dieing from cancer like they used to. The oncology field has grown so much and I think it is interesting to learn the new changes that are coming out. It does get depressing at times, although it is more so encouraging. I like to keep up-to-date on the new technology and watching the people get better rather than worse. It definitely has its ups and downs, but it has also advanced so much. It beats the same old, same old of everyday repetition with colds and cuts

Hi for those of you that work in oncology I have a question. I just started working in oncology. I have worked in radiology, orthopedics and limited acute care doing discharge notes. How long do you think it will take for me to become proficient with oncology? I have been a Transcriptionist for about 10 years and have been exposed to hospital radiology, clinic ortho and limited discharge summaries.
ONCOLOGY
Oncology involves all the organ systems and it is a challenge. I find myself praying for the patients sometimes. It is interesting to me the choices patients make regarding their treatment; some stoic, some adventurous, some depressed, some more concerned about their families than themselves, etc. It definitely makes me appreciate my health and my faith.

Oncology is so experimental and thus we see all these protocols and new drugs popping up all over the place. If you can do that,you can certainly learn a more generalized field such as internal medicine which less specific than oncology. I would say a lot easier also.

She is responding to you and you are eating her alive. Why would she put herself out there to be treated like this if she didnt mean it.
I am really astonished at how people can act on here. Would you treat people like this in person? If you do, I cant imagine you having very many friends.

Once you know a field, it becomes a piece of cake. I do not agree that you need ANY books if you are transcribing ONLINE. There are many govt sites belonging to NIH and end in a dot gov which have all the current chemo drugs to date. We also have other rx websites to check out like drugs dot com and rx dot com to find drugs and proper spelling and when all else fails there's always Google dot com search engine.

Radiation oncology....
I normally type Radiology and love it but was asked to cover a radiation oncology account until my Radiology account is ready. Heres my dilemma....
I think I really like doing oncology! Can anyone tell me what the earning potential is for (full-time) oncology work? I normally get paid by report for radiiology (1.25/report + incentive).
Transcribe oncology now...sm
I transcribed ER notes at several other MT positions, in addition to most other basic 4 reports, and I usually had no trouble getting the required lines with ER work. I enjoyed it from a variety standpoint. You never know what you're going to get, just like Forrest Gump! I, too, am tired of the repetition of oncology, hematology, radiation oncology, etc., and it does seem to sometimes drone on with some physicians. However, it can be a good line count, too. I would think you would be able to adapt quickly to ER work if you are looking for a change. Hope this helps.

there is always different meds and procedures more than any other field I've done. I quit after about a year. Great experience but ya don't make the money.

Some other ideas to consider:
If you are transcribing for an oncology practice, find out where they are on staff and check the websites for those hospitals. Many hospitals feature their cancer programs.
Most states have at least one comprehensive cancer center. There is a list of them in the back of the Stedman's Oncology Words book that includes the web addresses. They do cutting edge research, and your patients may end up there or may be coming back from their to get their treatment locally. By all means, buy the Stedman's Oncology Words book if you don't have it already. New 5th edition just came out.
The National Cancer Institute has a massive list of oncology clinical trials. I find it a bit clunky to use, but it is a resource. Your tax dollars at work!
CenterWatch lists clinical trials and new drug approvals. These parts of the site are free, but other parts aren't (and those are expensive). This site is well regarded by those who work in clinical trials.

Generally the pay is the same for acute work of all specialties. I'd recommend having a copy of Stedman's Radiology and Oncology. If you haven't done this specialty before, as someone else mentioned, you'll spend time researching chemotherapy drugs/protocols, etc., so the better your reference resources, the more productive you'll be.
I have Oncology experience.
But not for $.065 cpl as has been offered by other companies. Perhaps a few more details in your job ad? Estimated lines per day, pay rate, TAT, company website, full-time or part-time, employee or IC?
