Sounds like any old pair of cut offs would be acceptable....

In Reply to: What to wear to a wedding-sm - Undecided
The description reminds me of my MUCH older brother's wedding circa 1973.... She was barefoot, he was in ripped jean cut off shorts, the preacher looked like something that crawled out from under a rock, and when he asked my brother if he had anything to say, he "grunted." Gawd, it was awful. I'm sure this wedding you're going to won't be that bad, but if the bride is barefoot and the groom is in khakis, then any decide informal summery outfit would probably be A-ok.

lay offs .. yep .. me too.
I was greeted at the door this morning and walked to the office. Received my sererance package and then was allowed to clean out my desk.
When one door closes, another door opens. I kinda felt like I would be in this cut, hoping I wouldn't, but felt like it.
Good thing DH tuns 65 in July. Guess I'll have to start checking out medical insurance now.
Soooo if it's alright with you guys, I'll just hang out with you for a while.
Lay Offs
Boy this must be the week. I myself was also told on Monday that I was laid off from my hospital job I just started 5 months ago. I think they just used me to clean up their mess of backlog. I was very sad the first day, but then realized they did me a favor. No more working 10-6:30 shift and on Sundays, which I hated. My husband was happy. I am going to get unemployment so I can enjoy the summer months for the first time in about 10 years. It is going to be great. As they say everything is for a reason. We may not see it now but we will later down the road. I think this is a blessing for me. They were always hounding me to get my line count. I never had acute care experience and only did clinic notes for 5 years but they hired me and I was always short 50-100 a day. I feel a huge pressure off my back. I felt like I worked in a factory. I never took a lunch and I feared if my doorbell rang or phone because I did not have a minute to spare or my line count would suffer. No one should have to work like this and I will never. My next transcription job is going to be like before on a 24 hour turnaround. I am not working set hours ever again.
Keep the faith- God always closes a door but opens a window and I have always believed this.
HUGS and love!!
Lay-offs
My job ended the end of December as a receptionist in a doctors, which lead me to going to MT school that starts the end of this month. And now you all are talking about getting layed-off from your mt jobs. scary, what is up ?
Lay-offs
Not what I wanted to hear, but thanks for the info.
write offs/deductions for IC's??
Just wanting some ideas on what everyone uses as deductions. Im going to get hit hard this year and just seeing what everyone else does.
TIA,
DirecWay Drop-offs
Thanks for the tip. It looks like Direcway has a new upgrade from the 6000 model...more money of course. I will need to do something, as 3 days at half-production is just too miserable.
I don't pay more taxes. I have write-offs.
You have to decide that for yourself. Write-offs,
x
I think either is acceptable.
I think either is acceptable. It depends on the account specifics, some accounts I have worked on request that it only be single space. I learned to double space while learning keyboarding and I think it is accepted either way. I think it makes the report easier to read if you double space, but that's just me.
Of course, the acceptable way to do it is the
x
You really think it's acceptable sm
to pass up the "hard jobs" or ESLs that an MT might not be able to do and leave them for someone else who might be better equipped to handle them?
I think the MT that needs to do that has not business being in that work pool in the first place even having the opportunity to pass those reports by. They shouldn't be employed.
Direcway satellite drop-offs all day...
Is anyone else having problems with their satellite connection this week? After 6 months of no problems I am now getting constant drop-offs until 5 p.m. I am on the west coast and no weather problems. I have called "customer service," but that was beyond frustrating. Dial-up is excruciating to work with after being used to the high-speed. Thanks in advance for any info.
After I do my write-offs it's more like 10% - I think 30% is on the "conservative" side of
you don't owe. They have practice sheets you can do that will help you figure it out. Do a dry run using those and that will give you a better idea.
Write offs make a big difference. nt
x
But you get tons of deductions and write-offs.

write offs when working out of the home
As an independent contractor, where can I go to get a list of what I can write off legally when working from home?
TIA.
KSM
Thanks! It's nice to know what is acceptable. nm

Could they mean that a wireless USB is not acceptable
xx
is it acceptable in our guidelines, if so I will
do it too.
SH's a lot more widely acceptable than not. SM
If I were interested in browsing the want ads, I'd contact ShortHand itself to chat about what platforms don't work well with Shorthand even after their finetuning. That way choices wouldn't be unnecessarily limited and no dependence would be placed on possibly questionable info from Personnel personnel. Best wishes.
My question - why is this acceptable? SM
When did it become OK to have a doctor with a thick accent dictating so badly that we can't understand simple diagnoses, lab values, and to submit reports full of blanks? Why is it OK that docs without thick accents are mumbling, holding the phone so close we can't understand? Why is the staff at hospitals so afraid of the doctors that they can't ask them to please slow down, speak clearly, etc.? I am absolutely convinced that the staff and hospitals just don't care anymore.
How do I find the things that could count as write-offs? nm
x
I know it says it once and once is all it takes. We are moving away from it but still acceptable.nm

Is no raise after 7 years acceptable?
I work as an independent contractor. I have been with my office (had two doctors to begin with, took on a third two years ago), and I have never raised my rates. I went in and talked to my docs about a raise today (after emailing a couple weeks ago to set up a meeting about it). Not only did they say that's NOT happening, but the doc actually told me he expected my line count to go DOWN with the new system they are implementing. He was upset that he had been paying me for a line count that included macros of a few paragraphs and it only took me a few key strokes to get there. Also, they checked around and someone under-bid me for 2 cents less, so they were acting like they are doing me a favor by paying me my same line rate. Am I crazy to be super upset about this?
Honestly, I've done both and QA is easier. If the pay is acceptable, TAKE IT! sm
I learned MORE doing QA than doing MT, and it's still easier. You have the benefit of the rest of the chart to help you fill in blanks. Trust, it's not a scary job. If I could make a decent wage at my company I'd absolutely go back to QA.
Speaking of rip-offs, anyone have any advise on how to get back money paid for a product you never
received? I needed a Dictaphone C-phone for my job (was using a loaner) and put a note on the equipment board pertaining to this back in May. A woman contacted me stating she had one for $100 (I only needed the phone, power supply and phone cord). She said she was going away for 3 weeks and to Western Union the money to her that night and she'd send it out the next day. I did not like the high pressure and was still shopping around anyway so I told her I'd wait the 3 weeks and contact her then. About a week later she emailed me stating she cut her trip short but was going away again that Friday (It was Tuesday), I had by this time decided to buy her phone. I mailed out that day via Priority mail a M.O. for $100. She was very anxious for the money, and thought I'd sent it Express Mail, which I of course informed her I did not. She stated that it should be there by Friday and if she did not see her mail that day that she'd have her mom check the mail and then mail the C-phone to me. After 2 weeks I emailed her as I had no phone as yet, no response. A week later still no phone, emailed again, no response. Then I called her (looked it up) and she claimed her email was "broken" and she had not received my emails but would email me back as she was on her way out the door to a baseball game. I asked her how can she email me back if it was broken??? So then she backpedaled and said she'd call me.... I held my breath at that point. So the next day by some miracle I get an email from her stating her mother had mailed it regular mail, no way to track it, etc. So supposedly it is lost. I emailed her back which it appeared she did not get as she did not respond to my questions but she did email me again saying she'd return my money.....again I am holding my breath. That was 8 days ago. She is in OK, I am in VA. If she sent me a refund promptly it would have been here by now. Now when I call her, she does not pick up, and no answering machine either. I am planning now to mail her a copy of her email and my response to getting my money back. I am assuming at this point that I was taken for a sucker and was obviously too trusting. Right now I don't have $100 to burn (who does?) with my drives to the hospital (60 miles round trip) for my daughter's chemo, doctor visits, etc, on top of only making about 1/2 what I used to make due to the changes in my life right now. In the meantime I got kicked off the account for which I needed the C-phone for (add insult to injury here) due to problems at the company I was working for, so that does not sweeten my disposition any. So does anyone have any idea how I can squeeze her and get my money back? Contact the police there for fraud? Small claims court in OK? I am a persistent pain in the butt and will keep at her until I get my money back, if it is fraud then she picked the wrong person to screw with, if it is on the up and up then it is unfortunate but she should have insured it to cover her own (and mine) butt, and sent in with a delivery confirmation too....but you know what they say about hindsight. Any ideas???
In BOS, pg 172, follow-up is still acceptable for noun/adj (see page 172 in parenthesis) nm
nm
excuse sees acceptable to me since it's a mandatory call.
Life is too short and this seems small to me. Maybe it wouldn't be if I were in your shoes, but it does to me right now, for sure.
Enjoy life, one day at a time.
Never said that typos were acceptable, what I said was is 100% accuracy expected 100% of the time.
Yes, I used to work in a docs office doing this as well as other things and but never had this problem. That is why I am frustrated. My question was whether or not there was a curve for MT'ing or not. I guess I just was not clear on exactly what editors/QA were really meant for. I thought they were more of a saftey net for a TX company to ensure that everythign that goes out is what it should be. But I guess I was mistaken.
Anyway, I was thinking that maybe there was something else similar in this field that would be an option for me to do. Since I actually like this line of work, I don't see why I should give up so easily.
Lastly, its just me, but I actually think staying at home with my kids is a perfect reason to do this for a living. I mean seeing as though I actually do want to earn a honest living doing something that I have experience doing ...why not? It's better than relying the government for money to support my family isn't it?
I don't own a pair, at least not yet, but I
walked around the shoe department with a pair on and I'm not sure I liked them. I have no arch at all in my feet and thus have wide feet. I think I must have tried on Cayman's which are supposedly more narrow than the beach Crocs. I had on socks when I tried them on and they were snug, and I don't think the provide enough support for my feet. I hate wearing shoes and I'm outside barefoot even in 30 degree weather because I hate to put on shoes. My DH is always fussing at me. I thought I could keep a pair by the back door to slip on. I also garden extensively so thought these would be great for that, just hose off when they get dirty.
I haven't found them discounted on e-bay and in fact they sell for about $10 more on e-bay than I can get locally. I think it is Payless shoes that has a knock-off version. Theirs are tie-dyed and half the price. I found another knock-off on-line, but can't remember the name now, that are supposedly even better than Crocs, but I think it is just the clog without the holes.
Gotta a question... When you have an offer from a company, is it acceptable to basically..SM
give the company a set of terms. Here's my issue. I have 15+ years experience as an MT and I am finding after I've accepted the job, that I am placed on the crappiest account they have because of my years of wonderful "experience". Then I'm told that they are paying me the higher cpl rate not because of years of experience but because I'm working on the crappy account that no one else can do.
I find it very difficult to earn a living this way and wonder if there are jobs out there where a seasoned MT can just sit down and type carefree 8 hours a day. I'm not saying I don't want to ever type ESL dictation, but can I get an account where the majority is not ESL?
I'm good at what I do. I love OP notes and don't mind challenging work, but it's simply not fair. I feel like I'm being penalized for my years of hard work more than rewarded and I resent it.
It is good to know it is acceptable to wear slippers to the store, I have been wondering about
:}
Makes you wonder how they passed grade school grammar. No it is not acceptable.
I agree 100%.
Thanks for the tip. I just bought a pair! nm

transcriptiongear dot com - 10 pair for $11.00
they send 'em 10 pair to one package for $11.00........not that I need 10 pair but is how they sell them.......
not at all. that word and the double hocky sticks were ruled acceptable in the late 50s -
and no longer curse words.
Funny, the other board Hitlered it, but they allow the one where the typist pounds his head on the keyboard and blood spurts EVERWYERE until he is dead.
Guess violence, suicide is funny to them.
I guess you're quite a pair (sm)
That's too bad you both have such troubles. Good to hear (no pun intended) that your husband can hear now!! It probably seems like a small price to pay for him to be able to have his hearing but (but still soooo expensive, how can the company justify charging someone that much?) Can you benefit from laser eye surgery??
Get a pair of Sony earphones. sm
Like the ones kids plug into a portable disc player. I'm not talking about the "cheapies" that most kids use for the disc player with the little foam rubber spongy thingys. Get yourself a decent set that have "faux leather" with the big padding that cover both ears. You won't hear a thing outside of your earphones. Make sure the ear things cover both ears and have a lot of cushioning. A good pair might cost you 20 or 30 bucks, but is well worth it.
Good luck and godspeed MT comrade! :)
.
Just make sure the earphone attachment is the same size as your speakers.
Hmmm-I like that idea. I could pin a pair sm
of my husband's old underwear on him (the dog--LOL) backwards, make them a little snug but not tight. Poor thing is going crazy not being able to play with hardly anything and I think if I can get him mind onto something else, he would forget about the surgical site for awhile. Not only that, but it would keep our Golden from licking it, too. You know how dogs are, kinda gross. Have to try that tomorrow. Thanks! I'm still open for more ideas.
Rescued a pair from a shelter in Oct....sm
Black and tan. They are 1-1/2 and have been together since they were pups. She (Georgia) had his (Duke's) puppies not too long before we got them. I think the poor things were abused though. They are mini's. He's very timid, she's a little territorial. They are coming along nicely and enjoy their new home. However, they were never housetrained very well. Anyone have any ideas on how to get them housetrained. Not sure how much longer DH will let me keep them if I can't get that part under control. We all just love them to pieces, but the not being housetrained is getting old. Any suggestions?
How about a pair of her sexy underwear, SM
along with something that reminds him of home, something they can't get like chocolate. Just a silly idea.
I have a good pair from Aiwa. I use
them when I''m flying and when I'm on my treadmill. My home is quiet, but I've used them once or twice for transcription with no problems. Try Best Buy.
Cheap pair of Lanier
I have a cheap pair of Lanier that I have been using for over 10 years that work just great. Keep thinking about buying a new set but I never replace something that continues to work. Do replace the spongy ear pads once in a while. Think that they cost me $20 somewhere between 10 and 15 years ago.
Couldn't hurt to ask for a new pair
Couldn't hurt to ask right? That's my motto. Another motto of mine: Tis better to run over a pair of $14.97 headsets than a R100.00 pair... JMTOU (just made that one up). LOL
I have a pair of noise cancellations..
that I purchased at Wal-Mart for approx. 40.00 and they are okay. I only wish they had a volume control. But I plug it into my lanier and can adjust the volume. I have gone through several types. I have often wondered about the steth type but for some reason never invested. I also purchased a pair at big lots, wireless, that I really loved as they were also noise cancellation. I loved that pair because they were wireless. Then there was the pair from Radio Shack that I paid approx. 40.00, they were great. Wow, the only ones that I don't like are the ones that go into your ear (ear buds) can stand them but find myself having to use them sometimes....
I got a couple pair from ebay....
RCA's. They work great. The batteries do die often so I finally broke down and got rechargeable batteries. I already had a batter charger, just no batteries. I got 4 batteries. The headphones take 2. That way I always have a pair ready to go. Also, my charger only takes 15 mins to charge so if I'm using the other set of batts somewhere else, I'm not losing much time off work to recharge.
The bad thing about them, though, is that if you have your foot off the pedal for a certain amount of time, all of a sudden, out of the blue.......shhhhhhhhhhhh....real loud and suddenly in your ear. Startles the crap out of ya! It's happened to me so many times and I about pee my pants every time!!! lol. Even funnier if I'm writing when that happens. I then have a line going across the page! I try to either flip them off if I'm researching or push the pedal for a second every so often. But I definitely like them a lot better than that stupid cord. I tried everything with that thing from tying it up as short as I could to even putting it under the keyboard, etc. I still managed to get tangled up!
Thanks for the answers, everyone! I got a cheapie Maxell pair. I had

I have had a pair of noise-cancelling Bose for (sm)
around 3 years. I can tell a huge difference when I switch to the traditional stethoscope or Dictaphone brand headphones. The
sound quality is really enhanced by the Bose.
My office is in a loft above our living room. I bought mine because of family being downstairs with the TV on and kids playing, etc.
I have a pair of the earbuds (cheap ones) and they hurt my ears.
I couldn't wear them very long.
