If you know he is drinking and the children are in the home, you can call the police and ask for a welfare check on the children. If the police find evidence that the children need to be removed from the home, child protective services is required by law to first consider any relatives to care for the children. There are resources to help with the cost of keeping the children while he decides if he wants to straighten out his life. If the children are out of the home for 15 of any 22 months, the state has to look at terminating his rights to them and find permanent placement.
If losing his kids doesn't motivate him (and sadly most with this disease, it doesn't), then the best interest of the children need to be addressed. You think you are at your wit's ends...how do you suppose the children feel?
