think about it - we need doctors and they are the ones who have gone to college and earned the degree so of course they should benefit. If they weren't going to make more $ at it then who would go through all of those years of school and sacrifice to do it???? You also have to calculate in their expenses for help, the patients who never pay, the ones with insurance who don't have to pay much, their employees, their equipment, their office expense, college loans, malpractice insurance, which is sky high, plus all those hours that they are on call EVERYDAY that they don't get paid for. I worked in the office for a doctor and did hsi transcription and he was in private business and barely made as much as I did doing transcription. He charged high too but after all the expenses he just didn't see as much as everyone thought he did. There are others that are definitely benefiting more but not always how it appears on the outside and I say that for the most part they have earned it and deserve to make more after all of those years in school than someone like me who went to school for 9 months to get my transcription certificate.
ALL of the clinics I work on use SS #s as medical record numbers, and many of them cc to the
patient at their home address, which is conveniently typed at the bottom of the report. Seems pretty straight-forward to us, then why can't the govt figure this out and put a stop to it?

Where I used to work, 50% of the doctors never
I work with eScripting doctors and love it. sm
However, some of them are such conscientious dictators AND the machine has them down so pat that, if they were in charge of their own dictation--like independent practitioners--routing their reports through an editing service might turn out to be completely unnecessary. Office staff could give them a quick glance-over instead. I know nothing about the business end of this, just what I'm seeing on the screen.
And, yes, I was also really intrigued to see that some of the most horrible-sounding dictators quickly developed a very good working relationship with the machine. For sure, accents are totally irrelevant as the machine doesn't know they exist--if a practitioner can't get his tongue around h's and r's and always pronounces "heart" as "et" the machine thinks that's the way it's supposed to be pronounced--by that doctor.
I do much prefer editing over transcribing-fits my skill set better, but undoubtedly fewer editors than transcribers per report will be rquired in future.
I work for doctors directly, no QA, so I always proof.

The worst doctors are on VR where I work, all of them at the hospital
I do not get it when certain physicians are not on VR or the companies say they are not on VR. I disagree with what you say about VR not being able to handle them because I am grateful to have VR handle the ESLs.
Do you know any IC transcriptionists or friends who work in doctors' offices?
That is how I got started. A good friend worked for herself and had no coverage for vacations. I covered a vacation, then a day or two a week, which eventually worked into full time. I also did prn work for local offices.

I have an overabundance of work and would love a break. Too back I can't subcontract work (I'm an employee). I have had as many as 250 patients in one week. Today is a low day with just 26 patients coming in, but a lot of days it's upwards of 50 patients so I have 50 reports to type in a given day.

True IC work
To take up where someone else left off - are there any true "IC" jobs out there where the MTs work hours are truly flexible? I work now as an IC but my shift is dictated which is completely against the 20 rules that the IRS states - and of course I do not always have work. With 15 years of experience, I would think that I could find the "perfect" job, but have struggled over the last few years to find anything like what I worked a mere 10 years ago. I stay where I am because I have not been offered anything more than what I have where I am - and am actually pretty satisfied, other than the hours not being flexible - I am just wondering what has happened (other than outsourcing) to have changed this field to what is is now. Do any of you other MTs have a hard time suggesting this as a field of study for people who ask about it? I do know that with the price of gasoline more and more companies (other than MT) are offering their workers the opportunity to work from home, but it is so hard to leave the field that you have loved for so long.

A few platforms seem to be down this week, and other companies are slow. Of course, it is spring break, so it may be there is not much work, but still people get sick. Wondering if the MTSOs know more than we do on all of this. Just wondering about job postings here too and even on other boards...etc.

purposes your best best is something like Vonage of digital phone through cable company. It is truly unlimited. Other companies say they have unlimited, but they have a cap of 5000 minutes and that isn't enough if you work FT.

My girlfriend who works out of the Ohio office left me a message saying that she had gotten a message over the week end from the Ohio office with the following incentive: For every 10 reports that you typed, you would receive 25 dollars--IS THIS POSSIBLE with all the rest of us out of work in Amherst--if there is so much work in Ohio, why are we not helping???
This is true. I work for the Q -rarely run out
of work (live in CA). And by the way, I would get paid my benefit rate (which is at least twice the CA min wage. I always thought this was why I never got NJA. But at the same time, I know they would love it if I quit.

ICs are not required to work a specific schedule, true? SM
I had my meeting today with the HIM director of one of my accounts. My contract is to do all the clinic work and provide 24 to 48 TAT. Today, the director tells me she wants me to log in no later than 9:30 a.m. Monday through Friday.
I, of course, balked at this. I basically outlined the terms of our contract which states that I will give them 24 to 48 hour TAT, but that I am not required to adhere to a specific work schedule. I set my own hours. I don't necessarily have a problem logging in by 9:30 a.m. most days, but there are some days when I have morning appointments and commitments and let's face it, that's why I'm an IC, so I can have that flexibility!
I don't think this lady has any concept of what an IC is or what a contract is for that matter. She acts like I'm her employee. She tells me she has looked into some of the national companies and that they can guarantee her a set schedule. I'm sorry but I only charge her 0.12 cpl, I print up the work and deliver it three times a week. Plus I'm picking up tapes and transcribing them as well!
I think it's time for her to see what else is out there. What do you guys think?
Could maybe see clinics going over to
full EMR with doctors documenting, but it would be very hard in hospitals for physicians to do this considering how complicated some dictations are.
Try hospitals and/or clinics-
I don't know about other places but in at least 3 of the major hospitals in my area they have people work both in house and at home. Everyone works in house to begin with and has to prove themselves before going home. Some people (like me) just prefer working in house, so it works out.
Local Clinics
I would seriously try to find work at a local clinic if you're finding it hard to get hired with a National. I also went to a local community college. I didn't take me long to find a very small local MTSO to hire me, thank God they decided to take a chance on me. I now work for a local nephrology clinic. I definitely know though that if I tried to go out on my own, there would be no way I could have done it. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Or if you have a small local MTSO, they may be willing to give you a chance. That's how I started. I trained with the MTSO at her office for a couple of weeks and then I started working from home for a local nephrology group and I've been there for the past five years. Try not to get discouraged, although I know that's a hard thing to do.
That is great if you can get the same dictators. I have over 85 and all different clinics. (sm)
That is why I started my own business. It really depends on who you work for and if you get a great account your lucky. I unfortunately wasn't that lucky and after 15 years a GF and I do it locally for doctors. Much less stressful. Glad you can do that!!

what you have just described is the best and most cost-effective way to get quality transcription. At the hospital where I used to work, MTs are treated like the scum of the earth. The nationals want us, but pay peanuts. By eliminating the middleman and the overhead of having enough office space for MTs, a hospital/clinic can pay the MTs what they're worth, the MTs can afford to keep working for them and stay on for many years, gaining a better knowledge of the doctors and the institution. Both that and having decent pay and a more flexible schedule means happy MTs, and happy MTs will go the extra mile to produce top-level work. It sounds like your employer is ahead-of-the-curve in the way it deals with its transcription needs.
I think the MDs that care in their offices or clinics sm
keep their trans in-house. My personal MD does and overseas every last little detail and she is tough! The ones who dont want to mess with it go to a service and let the service take responsibility. So neither will care....IMHO

that still have in-house. My local hospital did this and the education/experience/hands-on help provided was golden. Then go home and work - you will be viewed as a step up if expierience is in-house.

I am an IC and my accounts are clinics and doctor's offices
So I have weekends off unless the docs dictate late on Friday, in which case I have the choice of working late on Friday or getting the work done over the weekend.
With clinic work, you don't have the constant flow that you have with a hospital. You can't work harder or longer hours to make more money. There is a specific amount of work, and when it's done, that's it. Your income will fluctuate. But if you're willing to put up with that - you can have your weekends off.
Is this Holiday a major one? Clinics and offices closed?
I guess I am out of it. How big of a holiday is this? All the kids home from school today? Post offices and banks closed? Seems rather quiet work-wise. Wondering if I should start cleaning the house or keep staring at the no jobs to do in my queue.

Yes, I always have the notes. One time, it was an entire day worth of clinics except for one!
How did they just get one note and not the rest? There have been a couple of times when the doctor just didn't dictate on that particular patient, but most of the time I typed the notes, printed and delivered the notes, and then they say they never go them! And I always have them on my PC and backed up on CD.

That's what I did. I first started out working for a very small MTSO and worked at their office for a couple of weeks and then they moved me home and I started working on a single speciality account. I'm still working for the office after 5 years (altough the MTSO closed her business).
Any hospitals/clinics hiring home-based employees on an hourly basis? TIA

I think a lot of people go the extreme -
so, if I had to be one way or the other (being a humble extremist myself...*LOL*), I'd rather have too much self-esteem than not enough (been there, done that the first 30 years!!! *L*). And I am a truly humble person, been recognized for just that.....but because of *been there, done that* - and all sorts of therapies (not drug therapies), some end up the other way. Oh well, this was a fun couple of posts - so I thought.

Legit place...hmmmm. There are a few out there. Whether they have clinic work is another story. I'm sure someone will have suggestions. But, isn't it cool that you'll probably already know the doctors no matter where you go!
Only 30 doctors?
Your line count sound great anyway! Maybe some day I will get there. I will keep working on the expander thing. But only 30 doctors? I am sure we work for the same national. I have only two accounts, but have 97 doctors! I have been meaning to ask my friend who works for the same company if she has as many. She has 4 or 5 accounts, but I don't know how many doctors. Sometimes, when I see the 'no jobs' screen, I am tempted to call and ask for another account, but I never do since I am afraid of what I will get. One of my accounts is my 'dream account' because there are few doctors, and they are WONDERFUL. The other account has about 90 doctors and I never know what I am going to get!

I used to type for a doc who said sh*t at least once in every sentence. He always told "the typist" to delete that but it was a laugh just listening to him!
You may be right that most doctors
do not read their reports, but a lot of other people do, including coders, nurses, insurance companies, attorneys, and possibly even the patients themselves.
