Smartype only works in specific Word versions.

You want an Expander that works in all programs and a lot of platforms, such as Instant Text or Shorthand.

Smartype only works in DOS WP5.1 and MS-Word
and if you are trying to use Smartype in a cottage program that has stripped out some of Word's features, Smartype will behavior improperly or not at all. It will also behavior improperly in MS-Word 2003 due to a change Word made that is not compatible with Smartype. Last time I talked to Joe, Stedman was not making this fix a priority so I reinstalled MS-Word 2000 to avoid the conflict.
Those versions don't even come close to how IT V Pro works.

MS Word versions
Well found out that with the update, it DOES work, instead of doing "typical install' you can do a custom install and tell the update to keep the original version of Word, which it does and will also import your Stedman's Quick Look, etc.
Even different versions of Word count the same, so it's not that either. nm

Sharing with older versions of Word.
There are some problems with sharing files with older versions of Word. Although there are ways to get around it, it sounds as if it might be a bit annoying. I am thinking about upgrading, and this came up in my research.
Two versions of Word on the same computer will only work
correctly if the oldest version is installed *first*.
There are updated macros in all versions of Word
except 2007. The macro for 2000 is called macros9.dot and can be downloaded from the Microsoft site. The AutoCorrect Utility in 2002 & 2003 is in the support.dot template that is included with Word. You can go to this site to get the macro for 2007:

Or you can simply locate your .acl file and back that up. It's easy to find if you add an entry and then do a search for it by the date modified. Just make sure you are searching hidden files and folders.
Depends on the versions of Word and WordPerfect. sm
Some WP versions can read Word .doc files, some don't. Some versions of WP will not accept copy/paste from Word. The advice to save the Word document as an .rtf file may be your only choice.
What version of Word? That can't be set in newer versions. I had to do a macro --sm
I hope this link works for you. It shows how to make the macro. I use alt + semicolon for it because it seemed those would be a convenient shortcut to use. H
Here's the link (you'll probably have to copy and paste it):

Upgrade to Word 2007 vs older versions
I just bought a new PC with Vista operating system. Now I must buy Word to install. I looked at the differences between Word 2007 and the older versions on the Microsoft website and it seems that there is a difference in the way Word 2007 is saved compared to the older versions - you have to download a "patch" to be able to "read" older version Word files and for my clinic to be able to "read" my Word 2007 they will have to download a "patch" as well to enable their PC to open this document. I need some advice if this is a good idea or if I should just stick with an older version of Word. I have a copy of about 3 years old that I have not used and can load on my system. I would like to upgrade to the latest version as I know in a year or two the doctor's office would have changed but am wondering if the new version is a pain to work with or a pleasure. Anybody out there that can tell me the pros and cons between upgrading to the latest or just sticking to the old and familiar. I am also not sure if the doctor's office will download the patch and how accomodating they will be...
Difference in Word 2007 from older versions
I have a trial version of Word 2007 on my computer, and I really like its layout. It's not a fully functional version, so I can only try it out so much. Has anyone made the switch from the older versions of Word and liked it better? Has it improved your productivity in any way? Any problems with it? All feedback appreciated.
Thanks!

Can you use the Word autocorrects or only Smartype? What about the Word auto text? tia nm

Full Word is in the Works "Suite," not plain Works.
Works saves files in a different format, but you can open them in Word if you have the correct filter installed.
Smartype/Word
I do too.
Smartype/Word
I use Alt A to jump to the {} field, if I understand you correctly. Don't know that that will help you.
Smartype in WP or MS Word?
Hi, again,
My husband (and Resident Tech Support) just asked if when you converted from ST to SH you were using ST in WP or MS Word.
Smartype with MS Word
Smartype is not compatible with MS Word 2003. I used it for a very short time and it would freeze constantly or spontaneously backspace and erase my entire document. This wasn't an infrequent problem, this happened every two minutes. If you just purchased this, Stedmans may give you a refund if you contact Customer Service.
Smartype and Word
go to www.productivitytalk.com. I too am a Smartype user, though have not tried it with Word 2003 as of yet. I just googled your question and others are having this same problem. Check out the forum.
Smartype/Word 2003
There are no new fixes for that problem. If you call or E-mail Stedman's they will refund your money when you return the software. They know this is a problem. I have noticed that it only happens to me if I hit a combination of two hot keys. You could try turning off or not using those keys. I have found it to be the best solution as I am just more comfortable using Smartype. I tried other expanders, but just like Smartype better even with this problem.
Smartype/Word 2003
Not sure how to do that when I cannot get anything for Smartyupe to open--properties, settings, help, etc. I bought Smartype many years ago, from a different company, so not sure what to do. Thank you!
Smartype & Blocks in MS Word?
I have just started using Smartype with MS Word 2002. I have created blocks and saved them. Some of them work but others are not pulling into my documents when I type in the name of the blocks. When I try to readd them ST tells me that they are there so why aren't they pulling into my reports? Thanks for any help with this.
Could this be used to export Smartype into another word expander?
I am looking for a way to export my thousands of Smartype entries into other word expanders.
Does anyone use SmarType and Word using text fields {}? When I F11..sm
to the next field {} it causes SmarType to lock up. Does anyone know how to fix this?
thanks so much
Smartype frozen--Word 2003
Aware of any new fixes for Smartype freezing in Word 2003? Thank you!
smartype attaches to your Word program - SM
so you cannot use it unless you open Word as well as the account's platform, and type there (then copy/pasting the reports into the facillity's system).
Shorthand works independently so works with pretty much all systems.
I've never had one that did not expand a shorcut with the space bar.
Anyone know how to transfer auto corrects from SmarType to word? please..nm

I use SmarType with Microsoft Office with Word 2003
I have had this problem and have even lost documents and was told by Microsoft that this is a Microsoft bug that they have no fix for. I called them and e-mailed and they said they are working on a fix. Can't give me a solution and no time frame of when they will have a patch.
Smartype should work in any word based platform - sm
If Emdat is a web based platform, then it won't work. Fighting that (on Chartscript) myself right now and hate it!
WARNING...I wasn't so lucky trying to use Word 2003 and Smartype... SM
My system didn't just freeze up once in a while. I couldn't make it through one report without this happening. I finally researched the archives and found that there is actually a conflict between Word 2003 and the Smartype.
Anyway, I wanted to switch from Instant Text to Smartype so much that I actually uninstalled my entire Microsoft Office 2003 software package and purchased Word 2002. I haven't had a problem since.
Works is a dumbed down version of Word and Excel. You get the full version of Word in the Suite.
The Works Suite is a cheaper way of getting a full version of Word if you don't want or need the other applications in Office.
I was hired for a specific account/specific
work type. I've learned the dictators, done the macros, now they need to hire new MTs because the workload has increased, so they switch me to a very difficult account, doing everything but my normal work type. Does this make sense? I'm productive on my original account, not productive on new account, plus I'm majorly stressed. I do ESL 90% of the time but the new account is really horrible, not only ESL but they mumble and the quality of the dictation is bad. If you took a new hire and put them on this account and they stuck it out, maybe they wouldn't think these dictators would be so bad. I've talked with the MTSO and they say they'll switch me back and that lasts 2 weeks and then back to this horrible account. It would be different if they called and said we need you to do this account for a couple of weeks, but it doesn't pay enough for me to do from now on.
I understand this is the way the business is and my griping probably isn't going to help anything, but I just had to get it out.
Well, Word is easy to buy and easy to install. Word 97 works great. Cheap. SM
I still would not work anywhere I could not use a spell checker with grammar checker and a Steadman's Medical Spell Checker.
IF they want people to TRANSCRIBE MEDICAL REPORTS, then I guess they better get the programs they need.
It's like probably 110% easier to buy and install Word 97 than to try to program their own programming. And, yes, I do mean Microsoft Word 97. Why? Because you can install it unlimited times, in case you need to install the operating system again. And it has a few features that Microsoft, in its un-wisdom, took away in Word 2000 and 20003 and 2007. So, yes, I'd go with Word 97 for its cheapness and it works better than the later versions. Just my opinion, with 20 years experience being an MT. So what if they "don't have it" on their computer? It's easy to get.
Anything that works with Word..NM

Word comes with Works as an add-in.
Look in the discs that came with your computer. You should already have it.
It works within the Word
Program you already have on your computer. It pulls up and opens your word, so any Autotext, etc. you have, you can still use. Hope this helps!
If you got Works alone, you don't have Word, just the
Works word processor. It looks like Word but doesn't have all the features of the full version. Full versions of Word only come with the Works Suites and the latest version of the Suite only goes to Word 2002.
MS Works and MS Word are NOT compatible. SM
If you do a document in MS Works and try to open it as an MS Word document all you will get is machine code. So if you are transcribing for someone who wants the files and they have MS Word, they will not be able to do anything with them (except pull their hair out).
MS Word is included in MS Works now sm
What Dell probably met was that MsWorks includes a full version of MS Word. It's the less expensive way to get Word without having to buy Ms Office. The student version of MS Office cannot be upgraded, btw, so don't get that.
No, I do not have Word, Just Works that does not count spaces.
nm
Wanting to buy used Word,(is this legal? ) only have works.
.
I use CS and ST, works great. The CS that I use is actual Word -sm
I have heard that Chartscript net, which is the newer version, is different - more like a box that you type in instead of actual Word. I have worked for 2 places using CS now, and it implements the actual Word program. As long as it's not Chartscript net, you should be okay. When working, we're told to open our own version of Word first before we even log into CS because it will save anything there if the report you are working on is lost somehow. When I type in CS, which looks just like my Word, ST is up and running right in CS, just like when typing in my own Word program. No problems with it at all. I know what you mean.....I would haaate to work without ST too. Hope it works out for you!
I have Word 2003. works spiffy.
I do have the small office version.
google works wonders as does word board......nm
x
You'd be limiting yourself. It only works in MS Word 2000 & 2002.
Lots of people have had problems getting Smartype to work in Word 2003 and you can forget 2007. It doesn't work in different platforms either. You'd be much better off looking at ShortHand or Instant Text.
What Word program works best with Vista? Has to be less than 2007. nm
x
No, the Works "Suite" has a full version of Word... sm
that is compatible. It's the plain Works version that usually comes installed on new computers that uses a different file format and is not compatible. You just have to be careful that you are buying the Suite.
This is funny blaming it on Microsoft. SmartType only works in Word and they need to keep up with
nm
What is the version of word for windows that works best for you? Still working off 2000.
xx
No. EditScript works fine with my 2003 Word version. sm
It is ExText with Word 2000 that I am worried about interfering with my EditScript from eScription.
Sorry that happened to you. I have been running Word 2003 with eScription for about 4 years now. Everything works great!
