Wow... you vacuum every day? Dang, I'd never even get 50 lines done a day if I did that. I maintain and clean seriously on my one day off, but... hats off to you, sister!

How long to get consistency in lines?
I have been trying to use an Expander for 2 years. My speed is between 150-200 lines per hour, 1100 to 1500 per shift, depending on the docs and type of report. None of the docs seem to say the same thing every time so I've been having a hard time. I have a slew of normals but must change them all the time.
I have hundreds of words and phrases in my expander, but I can't remember half of them or how they are abbreviated. The advisory gives me enough suggestions but I have to stop and chose one if I don't remember the number immediately.
I have the book Saving Keystrokes but part of my problem is that I'm not consistent on using abbreviations. My goal is 250-300 lph consistently. How can I achieve this without jepordizing the quality of my reports?
Don't say use macros. I have no idea how. I've been reading up on everything I can find about them, but it goes in one ear and out the other. I just can't figure them out anymore (used to a decade ago).
Any ideas or help here?
Long lines . . . better to charge
lines at the pumps, 2-3 cars long.
How long does it take you to type 1200 lines?
On a normal good day it takes me about 5 hours, somedays I just can't stay focused so it takes longer. I'm still debating about getting an Expander so just wanted to see how long it took people on average.
I'll bet she meant that's how long the lines are before it returns. nm

SELF-EMPLOYMENT FANTASY
Am I living in a dream world thinking that I can actually find clients that will allow me to establish the rules by which I will run MY business? Or, does being successfully self-employed in this industry mean that I must allow the clients to walk all over me? I am flexible to a degree, but just want to be able to set limits while still being able to make a living. Maybe I should find some other industry?
A mere fantasy
Perfect voice recognition?
Ranks right up there with perpetual motion.
It will never happen. But you go ahead and believe that if you want. I can only assume you have been sold the illusion of voice recognition.
Too many words in medicine sound the same and are spelled differently, which requires a human brain to decipher.
My take on that is that alot of it is pure FANTASY.
Just to make my minimum lines, I'm working 10-11 hours days, plus at least part of Sat., and am making about $23,000/year. And I'm not a newbie, either - been at it for over 30 years.
Definately ruins any fantasy I ever had about cowboys!

Got so excited about my fantasy, the name did not make it...Andy Garcia! nm

While I was sleeping
You could not possibly work for MDI-FL. I was in the hospital in March and the girls at work refer to it "when Liz was sleeping".. I sent out a mass email when I came back in July. I am really sorry you did not get it.
You are very bitter and this is very sad.
If you truly worked for MDI you would have gotten the mass email thanking everyone for their prayers and support.
I don't think cherrypicking can ever be stopped at any company, but we do try our best.
Thanks,
Liz
Sleeping sm
I live in a noisy summer community. I have put my CD player on with earphones, although I worry about whether there would be a major disaster such as a fire, etc., I would not hear. I have told my neighbors of my plight and told them to pound on my door should they have to. I like Kenny G, Beethoven, beach sounds, rain sounds, etc., I put on my CD player, plug in my earphones, take a Benadryl or whatever and shut the blinds. Make a comfortable bed and wear comfortable clothing such as a workout suit if you don't want PJ's. At first I was uncomfortable but then you realize it's the only way. You have to get some sleep, been there, done that. Sometimes a sleepy, no-caffeine hot tea after you make up your bed will help. No caffeine, no worry, no phone, just put your trust in the fact that should something awful happen, your doorbell will ring, the neighbor, or God forbid, the police, will find you, just go to sleep! Good luck and God bless. If someone needs you bad enough, you'll hear it, just relax!
Sleeping......no two ways about it! NM

Not lately. The sleeping issue has always
been one we've disagreed on, even when he was working, so it's kind of got too many old fights behind it, kwim? That's what makes me frustrated probably as I don't feel like these are things we can ever agree on. His "compromise" is not sleeping until 11 and only letting the kids watch 1 hour - not a compromise at all to me, but I apparently don't appreciate that it is. I appreciate your thoughts though.
trouble sleeping
Anyone have any suggestiongs, except for Tylemol PM or Advil PM. I am just afraid that these can cause liver problems. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks
trouble sleeping
Valerian is a all natural sleep aid which helps some people very much. However, be prepared for the smell open the lid and close quickly. There is NO bad taste. Hope this helps.
try herbs for sleeping
I don't work 3rd shift but do have insomnia. I've found that herbs work nearly as well as prescribed meds for sleeping, and I don't wake up feeling groggy. Valerian is good, as is skullcap, but it seems that combinations work best. There's one called Sleep Like a Baby from a mail order company, HCBL, that works really well.

Aside from coffee and sleeping, how do you keep yourself awake?
I'm so very, very tired and sleep deprived this week from everything that's going on. My eyelids keep drooping and I can't get motivated, but I have to get this work done. I know if I try a little catnap, I'll be out like a light for the rest of the day. Any tips?
WANTED: SUGGESTIONS TO HELP WITH DAY SLEEPING
I like working the graveyard shift, but am having trouble getting consistently good sleep during the day. So far, I have a dark mask, ear plugs, and have tried both diphenhydramine and melatonin as sleep aids. The sleep aids have not really been effective. I also find that playing soft music in the background is helpful in blunting the sound of traffic outside my window, which I can hear despite the ear plugs. Does anyone have any other helpful suggestions, tips, tricks, OTC pharmaceutical remedies of which I'm not yet aware? TIA..
7 or even 7.5 cpl is slave labor
I had a company offer me 7.5 cents recently and I said no, perservered it out, and found a great company that pays 10 cents a line and they actually care about their MTs, not treat them like a number. Hold out for what you deserve to be paid and don't compromise. A company paying 7 cents is looking for slave labor.
Slave labor
... sounds like someone is on their high horse in a third world country and expects American MTs to get with the slave labor mentality!
Slave Wages
I dont know who you work for but I make about $25-30 per hour. I work two jobs and 10-12 hours a day and on weekends and I make between $6000 and $7000 per month. I know that is excessive for hours but I am trying to pay off my house, car, etc and I am spoiling my 3 kids rotten!!
I type radiology, which I believe is the easiest and fastest to learn and type.
I'm getting tired of sleeping on the couch. We bought a (sm)
fairly expensive mattress and my husband and I both do not like it at all. I have resorted to sleeping on the couch sometimes because it is more comfortable. Thanks for the input. I'm looking at the 5000 Queen. Which do you have?
Slave labor, I agree
His $10 bid was probably from China (or the company which MT's are not allowed to talk about here anymore).
Yep, it IS just one little detail, the fact that you are slave to them, but when they

If you think you are working for slave wages now...
Medical transcription is not your field. We work for slave wages and have to compete with offshore transcriptionists who work for next to nothing.
You will need to have an extensive medical knowledge, be willing to constantly purchase new equipment and reference books, and for all of that you get paid worse than a Wal-Mart greeter. Wages consistently have been going down, not up.
If you have a bachelor's degree, I would look into other fields if I were you.
The only way I would recommend this field to someone is if they are handicapped or have an ill child or something that forces them to work from home. Aside from that, I wouldn't recommend it.
Again, if you make yourself a slave to them they will never respect you.
and that will give her a nudge towards "independence" instead of being dependent on you and not appreciating it.
Your heart is in the right place but sometimes good-intentioned people like yourself unknowingly make themselves appear to be a doormat and can't figure out why they get treated as such.
Reply: THere are not enough MTs willing to work for slave

This stuff causes allergies in some people, too, and problems sleeping! nm

gotta love your ID "MQ Slave" says it all.
Tooooo funny. My daughter stopped in the other day and headed right to my office. She said, "OH MY GAWD! MOM'S IN THE KITCHEN!"
I just answered the insurance post. I don't know if they have slave labor or not. nm

6 cents a line is not competitive imo. More like slave wages.

yes, pay by production reminds me of slave labor on an assembly line, with pitiful
payback. Apparently, these nationals get away with this because we're willing to sell ourselves so cheaply to work at home. It's like having a constant monkey on your back to make production, with so many variables thrown in each day that it's just nothing but stress. And, what if you are having a bad day, not feeling up to snuff? NO CAN DO, or your paycheck reflects it. I mean, everyone has off/slow days now and then, but we're expected to work in constant high gear for fear of the loss in income. I live in a rural area, with in-house MT jobs scarce, which is why I'm doing this, but if there WERE an opening in a hospital, I'd run for it.
can you stand on your feet all day, be abused by better than thou customers, work for slave wages?
Well what is slave labor? Unpaid? Do these people willing report to work unpaid?
Sounds like they may work for a certain national MT company with a private board on MT Stars. Now that's slave labor. Walmart is a walk in the park compared to the national MT company with the private board.
Aaahhhh, now I get it. Gross lines vs. Character lines. I guess I've just been conditioned to
think in terms of character lines. One of the perils of working as an IC for somebody who defines what a line is versus owning your own company and defining it yourself. After working for someone else for 15 years, maybe it's time to bust out on my own.
That is a lot of work/lines for 2 people. I do 3000 lines per day sm
if you times that by 30 days that only comes to 90K lines a month, that is working 7 days a week including weekends. I don't think 2 people can handle that.
900 lines is below 1100 lines, where the bonus starts.

I hate Instant Text. It is expensive, long long learning
curve, and too much distraction for me.
How long should I wait after applying for a position before I follow-up. It has been as long as two
without hearing from some. Just wondering if I should send an e-mail to follow-up to see if they received my resume or not. I don't want to offend anyone but feel two weeks should be long enough for someone to at least acknowledge my resume and that I have applied for a position. Right now I would accept anything even a note saying no thanks. Any advice would be appreciated. I haven't had to apply for a job for the past 10 years so I am a bit rusty at this. Thanks again for any advice.
Gross lines include all lines containing
printable characters, so a full line and a line with one word on it are charged equally. Straight lines are basically the same as gross lines, but with this method of counting the blank lines are counted as well (again, equally). I have only had one company pay this way, and they are a middle man. I would think the charge would be about the same as for gross lines, and that not too many offices will want their lines counted this way (the one I worked on was probably inherited from someone who had counted the lines that way, so just continued).
The norm is 1 minute = 10 lines; 10 min = 100 lines - sm
granted this varies per dictator. More lines if a fast talker, less if a slow talker.
I went from 2400 lines to 1800 lines
a day when I switched from clinic (through an MTSO) to hospital work. Not only was the clinic work easier with more macros (and less providers to learn, 12 vs 300+), but I was typing in straight Word (as opposed to Softmed/Chart Script). So you see, it really varies depending upon the type of work as well as the platform used. That said, I am so much happier typing the 1800 lines per day (I make over $15 per hour plus an incentive for any lines in excess of 1200 per day) plus a great health package/benefits, AND approximately 5 weeks of paid time off per year. In my opinion, hospitals really are the best employers WHEN they appreciate the work we do.
My advice for you is not to judge a job by any one criterion but rather the entire picture. The 'extra's can really add up.
Good luck in your job!
Which is the one where they are sc*&ing us the standard lines or the qualified lines? SM
Mine show up as STD when I pull up my transcription log. But I see now there is STD/QT.... So which is the one where they are ripping us off, standard or qualified? Need to know. I am about to switch companies and I will not do if they are actually taking lines from me. Thanks guys.
Congrats! How long have you been a MLS and how long did you study for the test!
Please see message. I have three daughters with long, long hair.
I also have long hair down to my waist and my three girls have hair that long too. My daughter brought them home from school last year. I was devestated and grossed out!!!! I have never had to deal with lice. Anyway, we did the treatments and two of my girls broke out in a severe rash with the OTC stuff. Their little heads were so sore!! I thought I was being meticulous with eggs, only to find them hatching again down the road. A nurse at the pediatricians office suggested I try oil to suffocate them since my girls were allergic to the lice solution. I bought a huge bottle of veggie oil and dumped it on all three heads, plus my own. I then wrapped the heads in platic wrap and then a towel. I left this on for 30 minutes. It takes a while to wash out the oil, but we never, ever had the lice or eggs again!!! If you try this, make sure you put on an old shirt and put a towel around your shoulders. Obviously we were desperate, but we all have such long hair and very thick hair so I was willing to try anything. And I figured there was no chemicals involved so that was pretty safe. And it sure did help my littles ones since their scalps were pretty raw from the solution. Hope this helps and Good luck!
It's been a long, long time since I've used a C-phone, sm
but I do think jobs can be paused.
I had a problem with this for a long, long time sm
I have always worked days, like from 6-3. Over the last few years, it didn't matter how much sleep I got, I became real groggy between 7 and 11. Really shoots the day. Talked to my doctor and he said my blood pressure pills were the culprit but he refused to change me to another brand or dosage since I have multiple aneurysms (2 in the brain). My BP has been stable for a long time and he wants to "keep it on the low side". I tried taking them before I went to bed instead of early in the morning, but then I had headaches all day. So, I am changing to a night shift for a few months so I can sleep when those pills kick in and so far it is working pretty good. I stay mostly awake during my shift and die when I hit the bed from 6 am to 10 am, then I lay down again later in the afternoon for 2-3 hours. I still get 6-7 hours of sleep, it's just split up during the day, plus I am mostly awake now when I sit down to type. I don't have to deal with the heat in my office, either. It tends to warm up real fast in here with the south sun on the house and 2 pc's running all day, even with the air conditioner on.
Way back when, a long, long time
ago and in a galaxy far, far away, I had my own accounts also and some years cleared $75,000. Yes it can be done, but you need to have your own accounts. Also lots of delivery, and other duties involved. I work for a large national now and make much less, but I got tired of accountants, having to deal with hardware problems, deadlines, driving deliveries, printing, printers, etc. So I decided to simplify my taxes and stay home and just type. Don't have to worry about computers either, because the company will just send me a new one.
Long, long files. Seemed like they'd never end! I'd never go back to VA again. nm
