Siren, I find googling key words fastest and most helpful. SM

In Reply to: Reference Books versus software - Siren

After that, my medication software, then my dictionary software rarely but valuable when needed. For books, I still use my Stedman's equipment book and Sloan's abbreviations/eponyms (invaluable when needed). As a new MT, I purchased most of the Stedmans books, plus many other books, and found them invaluable then, but now as a skilled MT they mostly just gather dust as doing a quick search with hands on the keyboard is much, much faster.

I find a lot of these little words are part of
very common English phrases. Maybe you are forgetting to make shortcuts for common English phrases. I have all my common English phrases as shortcuts, and I almost never proofread reports after they are done. Since I worked in-house doing radiology until recently, I was seeing my reports after the fact all the time. I never drop little words since I put English phrases into shortcuts.
I took shorthand too. But it sure comes in helpful for my expanders. I view words in shorthand for
i did use shorthand once in a job but i was so nervous the "boss" took pity and dictated the report on dictaphone.
Lots of 'em, but use a Lab Words, Sted's Ortho/Rehab Words, & Tessier's Surgical Words most

Siren? Any way you can talk to the doc? nm

SIREN - do it to spite him!!!!
BTDT and I went from a size 12 to a size 3 just to spite the B*st*rd. Unfortunately, and fortunately LOL, I am no longer married to him and I am back where I started except with a very supportive husband who loves me. I have decided in the last few months though that I am going to get back on track, I'm 43 now so a size 3 is completely out of the question :)! But I'm going to do it for me. You need to do it for YOU and having a side order of "I'll show you" really doesn't hurt LOL. Feel free to e-mail me privately if you need to vent.
I have only had the fastest DSL, but my ISP
has a speed test on-line that will supposedly show the difference in the various high-speed services.   I don't do VR, so can't say how that would be affected.
N is the fastest, but it isn't

widely available ye.  Most are backdoor compatible with each other, so that if you got an N it would be compatible with b and g.    I don't know that all are backdoor compatible so check to be sure.    I definitely wouldn't get anything less than a g.

The FAQ's on this thing say the fastest
Don't think so.
Ops and ERs -- my fastest money-makers. NM

Easiest and fastest way is to Google sm
once found, click on the manufacturer's website. That way you will always have the correct spelling, etc.
Fastest typist in the World
Transcribing speed and typing speed are two different numbers.
Interesting link below.
Which companies fastest to pay 1st check? (sm)

Someone said Proscript was fast (invoice period ends Saturday, direct deposit the following Weds/Thurs), but they're not hiring.

NEMT pays weekly, but a friend said it is several weeks until the first check, and they pay with paper checks.

Anybody else know a company that pays fast?  I'm good!

fastest/cheapest way if you already have MT stuff
Set the mini handheld recorder to play in front of your computer mic and record it digitally to a file  - play the voice file back on your MT equipment/foot pedal and transcribe - done this a few times for a PRN tape for a local doctor, works great!  (no kids home, no barking dogs though!)  Otherwise you have to get a mini-player with footpedal (about $250 for a cheap Sony at Office Depot).
Fastest/safest way via Excel
Assuming:
- your physician names in a table / list with firstname, lastname, specialty, address1, address2, etc. in their own columns?
- you are able to sort / modify the data
- you are interested in having a better way to find the ESL / "difficult" spellings

a. Which tool to use for list management?
I strongly recommend you keep the raw data in an Excel table for safety and speed of sorting. I just ran a test with just over 14,000 rows in a Word table - for sorting by specialty/last/first name. In Word, it crashed once and took more than 3 minutes to sort the second try. Same function in Excel is stable and takes only seconds.

b. How to most safely sort the list?
You can use VERY simple macros within Excel to select the entire list then sort by:
- last / first / specialty
- specialty / last / first
- etc.
Then, assign each macro to an on-screen button labeled according to how it sorts, e.g.:
[sort by specialty] [sort by lastname] [etc]

c. What about "difficult" last names?
You could add a column to the list for "sounds like" and as you encounter new physicians whose names don't look like they sound, enter what the physician says -- or what you would guess -- the name sounds like. You could enter a representation of the whole name, or just the first couple of syllables, e.g.
- for written Wojcicki use a sounds like of voychits or voychitski

If you are interested in getting these (or some variant) into practice, reply here or contact me off list, I'd be glad to help further.
MTSO just wants work done by fastest, most
x
the reason it is the fastest growing sm
industry is because of the schools out there selling MT training! The schools don't know what they are doing, they are just ripping prospective MTs off.

This profession will NEVER be something that can be learned totally in a classroom setting. If you go to school then you have to be willing to work in a facility for several years. you ahve to be willing to learn to transcribe any and everything and the worst of the worst before you EVER EVER go home to work especially on a production basis.

I don't care who it ticks off but at least it can't be said I didn't tell you the way it was.

The poster "hot pink" is telling it EXACTLY how it is but she words it better than I do. Im sorry for the folks who are losing their jobs (especially the MQ folks) to VR and India etc. But I think alot of the MQ employees used MQ as their very first job and didn't get the experience they really need. MQ should have been after you have worked for several years in a facility. With the training in every kind of work type and every foreign accent, etc. etc you wouldn't have a hard time finding a job now. They are still out there.
Googling

Google is my home page, so whenever I go online, that is the first page I see....easy!

try googling it...........nm
x
You might try googling..
as I strongly doubt that any of us live in Cancun.
googling

just googled and found some interesting info - pretty much all the bigger companies are offshoring - most not telling client.  There have already been incidents where a pakistani and indian transcriptionists have threatened to post medical information on the Internet - legislators aware.  the current administration thinks that the jobs the Mexicans are taking here are jobs that Americans don't want.  Are we about to let them think the same thing?  We need to be proactive - if we are really 100,000 or more - think of the jobs lost, taxes lost, houses lost.  Also found an interesting article about offshoring in which the owner of this site is quoted as being against (YEAH) offshoring.

You'll need a lab words book and maybe the Derm and Immunology Words..nm
s
Rely more on googling then (nm)

Not off the top of my head, but googling

Not talking about Googling
There are tons of reputable sites that I use daily. There is even a Stedman's site. I purchased books in the beginning but never use them. I only use internet resources and my downloaded version of the BOS. I do not waste time flipping pages of books. You have obviously not taken the time to explore the plethora of internet sites. rxlist.com and drugs.com are my favorites for medications.
try googling "achalasia scan." nm
??
Try Googling him with his old address or name in the town he was from - also
I think there is an on-line site called privateeye.com, or something like that you pay a one time fee that could probably dig up all you want to know and more. If you have kids, kick him out (change locks), stay in the house if you have one, document any bruises, cuts, etc, with pictures, tell people, mom, dad, friends about it. My husband ask me before we married if I would ever leave/divorce him and I told my husband only if he hit me (1 x would be all it would take) or cheated on me that I was gone (he cheated on his ex-wife-- not with me, did not know him then and he'd be out on the street, and about $100K poorer at this point)--Good luck and I hope you land on your feet (running).
Try Googling 'herbs uses.' Worked for me.
x
Try googling surfcam or oceancam.
Some have live beach cams where you can actually watch people surfing, boating, etc.
This is sentence I responded to about googling

Try googling "book for tax deductions" or

lol! She didn't mean googling the letters MT. lol!
x
I've kept Googling this term, but....sm
I can't relate just how it would affect opening your own small transcription service. But I'm way behind the times, and maybe someone with current info can be of help. I'm surprised your post has not yet been answered.
Try googling copy autotext in Word
You should get a link that gives instructions.  Hope this helps.  I copied mine recently on a disc with no problem.
Stedmans Med $ Surgical Equip words, Path and Lab words, and Tessiers Surgical Word book (3rd
edition).  I never buy drug books anymore.  Waist of money in my opinion.  New drugs come out so often, it's best to use the web.
The Sted's Ortho & Rehab Words is probably my most used book and then the Lab Words book. GL! nm

go to chat room on web site and find out. i'm working but if you find out, let me know.
creepy dude.
I find most of my abbreviations here. Scroll all the way down until you find the abbreviation box.

was that helpful? sm
what was the point in going off like that? She simply asked a question.  It's been a long week, huh?
Helpful QA
One of my QA people is very personable. She signs her name and adds helpful tips which have helped a lot. When I get snappy comments unsigned, I know its the other QA. Know your business. Don't overdo the punctuation. Concentrate on the medical report and its content. Nothing makes me madder than someone correcting what I know is right, especially if it is medical content that I know to be right.  I've gotten QA back so picky that I didn't even want to start work on my shift because they were SOOOOO picky, example breast-feed changed to breast feed and ; where a , works as good, etc. and send examples if you know someone is gonna need them! Bottom line to me... friendly, patient and helpful.. IMO
Helpful
Just wanted to say, as a newbie, how wonderful this site is. It is really helpful and thanks to the person who gave me the tip on how to break into the entry level MT position.
hopefully somewhat helpful
I work full time for a company in NJ, so I cannot answer as an MTSO. I live in Santa Clara, CA, which is in the South Bay and I notice ads for MTs will offer $19-$20 an hour whereas in the Sacramento area I have seen ads where they are only paying around $14.
This is VERY helpful!

This is also very interesting...Gives me a lot to think about! THANKS A MILLION!

You all have been so helpful!!

Thank you so much.  I have learned a lot from all of you, and I have plenty of ideas to try out.  I also got some great tips about the nickel allergy, which is wonderful as well.  That one has been around for a long time.

I will be making an appointment to take him to see a dermatologist, but in the mean time, I will be trying out some of these things and see what happens.

THANKS TO YOU ALL

Very Helpful
I believe I was one of the ones you helped. Thank you very much for the general information you gave me. I really appreciate it.
Thanks to both of you. Very helpful. (nm)
(nm)
Thank you all! Very helpful. It seems there are sm
downsides to being paid by line and by minute. I am hoping I do better paid by the minute, only time will tell though.
What I think would be helpful is
taking some classes in terminology. Like I said, I thought it would be a breeze. Yeh, right. What kind of work are you going to be doing, all 4s or speciality group? How many doctors will you be working for. Sometimes, and I am sure other MTs will agree on this, your English speaking doctors are about as bad as your ESL physicians. How fast do you type? Working for an agency, they can throw you (perhaps) into a group of dictators different each day, the money dwindles if you don’t know them. What kind of training will you get with the agency? I was just saying it is a lot of money to invest in and it is not that easy. A lot of the people on this chat board talk about possibly finding something else to do. I also had terminology class but then having that and actually typing the reports are a whole lot different. I consider the operative notes the easiest by the way, they are my favorite but I also have to type other things as well. Do you have any experience with listing lab reports, x-ray, medication dosages- would you be able to question and look up if you thought a dictator said 500 mg of Ativan when maybe it should be 5 that was typed. You need some knowledge about a variety of things in transcribing because I, and probably others, have to meet a strict accountability for our work - mine is 98% accuracy, not just type and make the money.
Very helpful, thank you all very much....but.....

I need very wide margins for the header, but if I change the margins for the body of the letter, it also changes the header.  How can you get separate margins for the header and the body of the letter?

Thanks again!

That's helpful, thank you...sm..

I didn't know the search key would pull up the desktop search.  Did you know Microsoft has a free update for their desktop search function?  It's nicer than the original, way faster with more features.  Not as many features as some others but it's fast and you can pull it up with one click, even though it pulls up the whole program instead of just the document.
