What's to be embarrassed about?
They are having fun...plain old fun...have you forgotten what that is?  It should not embarrass anyone.  You need to lighten up a little, you take yourself way to seriously dear.
I'm embarrassed to, but sure.

I buy a box of frozen breaded eggplant and fry each side (still frozen) in extra virgin olive oil for about 2 to 3 minutes, until crisp.  Pat it dry and sprinkle with parmesan cheese.  Put it in a baking dish and spread a couple tablespoons of spaghetti sauce on each piece and then cover with a couple slices of mozzarella cheese.  Then just serve the tortellini with the leftover sauce or with a little olive oil and garlic.

You can use fresh eggplant too, but I haven't done that in so long I forgot how.  I think I remember soaking it in milk for a few minutes before breading it.

Now I'm embarrassed because SM

I don't have any that I know of.  I just figured it was a website of theirs that I would log into.  So, do I need to have an FTP account and access their work via their host name, id name, and password?

Thank you for offering to help! I sooo appreciate it and will check back soon.

I'm too embarrassed to say (sm)
how much I am making and how long it takes me to make it. I work much longer hours to get less than I used to make at an outside job with benefits. Price for being at home for me though. You'd best believe you won't hear me broadcasting my salary though.
embarrassed ... not embarresed ... :)
.
I know perfectly well that some of them are embarrassed about this sm
I can't tell you how many times I will get an ESL and they practically whisper into the phone when they speak to me, but seem normal volume if they break to talk to those around them.

I have to think that some of them are told...okay so you pick up the phone and some gal is listening on the other end...she'll help clean up your English for you, don't worry about it.

They are talking to a STRANGER who will help them out with their English...okay so a stranger is listening and will judge their English skills. I would be really embarrassed to be in another foreign country and think that someone I didn't know was listening and fixing me up to be acceptable. I think I'd mumble too.

I have had a couple of ESLs in a situation where I could ask my office manager to call over to the practice and ask that the ESL speak louder, not more clearly, just up the volume. If I can hear them, I can understand them better. The last time, I told the office manager to make it clear that I could not HEAR this fellow and NOT that I could not understand him. That would have been an insult to say that. Well, he started to speak up and was very pleased (he called in) to say that his reports suddenly started being so perfect. Yup, I could not hear you, but I could understand you.

This is not the only mumbler.

The only other thing that think we as MTs need to understand, and our employers with us, is that not all of us can do every ESL type. I can do an East Indian of most dialects, Arabs, English, German, Spanish, Mexican, but I don't do Asians well. Not all ESLs are created equal and not all of us ears for the same things. I think in the future there will have to more ways to route jobs with ESLs to MTs with the right ear for each of them.
QAing
Yes it is pretty much a thankless job but then so is every other job.  Im fortunate to work with a great bunch of MTs.  I send feedback, if they want it and want to learn thats great.  If they don't want it and could care less, thats fine also, its their choice.  I don't hear too many thank you's but when I see improvement in their work or things they have learned that they didn't know previously thats enough thanks for me.  When you see the group as a whole score 98% or better on QA, then you know you've done your job.  Thats what its all about, whatever makes you happy, not what makes other people happy or basing job satisfaction on thank you's.  There are limits to my typing abilities these days due to doing so much of it for so long, at times working 2 jobs, so this has been a great alternative.
QAing

You know what?

If the dictations were not so crappy, maybe the whole OAing would be obsolete.  This would save a lot of money and the MTs would be paid better.

Ooops!

QAing...
'Oh, sorry, grammar police,....but you did call people stupid.'
In 1 sentence THREE punctuation errors, what do you call this?
Unqualified.
so, if your employer is QAing
production and quality are high, why wouldn't they  be able to judge your ability without being certified by AAMT who has sold their soul to large transcription companies like Medquist who offshore?
I have been QAing for about 18 months (sm)
and I average about 500 lines per hour - BUT - it's mostly clinic work, easy docs, same MTs, and super, SUPER slick software.  I also use a foot pedal and move through document with a mouse.    I sometimes read from the bottom up and group my docs and do all one doctor at one time if possible.  I also do my more difficult doctors in the morning and the easy ones in the late afternoon or evening - if I have this option.  I keep notes on common errors certain MTs make.  I also don't struggle with blanks - I figure the MT has given it her best effort so I listen 2-3 more times and then just leave it if I cannot figure it out.   It took me almost a year to get to this point but it was well worth it.  Best of luck to you!
But QAing requires much more knowledge
and experience than VR editing. They can hire newbies to do VR editing, but not QA.
QAing isn't just about medical terminology. QAs have
years of experience in the MT industry & have to know the BOS inside and out, years of experience with all different accents, etc. This is no different than when nurses assume just because they know medical terminology that they can do our jobs. There's a lot more to it than that.
You aren't alone. I am frequently mortified and embarrassed by commercials.
Pepto-Bismol's little song, Charmin, that Tampax commercial..ugh!

When I was a child I used to wonder what Preparation H was for because the advertisements never really said. I wish that was still the case!
Just point out the errors and duck. No win situation QAing anyone. MTs hate correction.
Sad, but true, and sooooooooooooooooooooo depressing for those of us who QA. There is no nice way to point out errors - believe me, I've tried it all. Smiley faces - trying to be kind, humorous, self deprecating - nothing works if they are one of "those" MTs who just do not take correction at all.  MTs either own their mistakes, or they freak.
Well, that's because it is spelled out in
??? What's your point?
How's that spelled?????
x
He also spelled ...

... simvastatin and folic acid.

Why because this is spelled wrong.
Everybody else points everything out, why can't I?????? You are multiple personality disorder considering you can never stick with one name.

Wanna play?
Can be spelled either way. Has been for years. nm

I know we have all had things spelled for us that seemed a ---
bit silly, but I just had a doctor spell not once, but twice during the report guns - g-u-n-s.
Do you not transcribe as spelled?

I thought that was the definition of verbatim account. What is a verbatim account definition, pls?

I spelled it right in my head. Besides, this is

You spelled "grammatically" wrong

Grrr! I just had a doc who spelled the abbreviations!

Patient has been in drug recovery - that's R-E-C-O-V-E-R-Y

don't shoot me!!!

nm
Perhaps you could make more if you spelled POLL correctly. LOL
Thought it was funny.
Did you notice you spelled grammar - grammer? LOL sm
Seriously though, it is your account and you have every right to demand better quality, and if she cannot provide that for you, then maybe you need to reconsider her as an IC. You absolutely have to be very careful when hiring those who just cannot take criticism the right way. Those are the worst because they are prideful MTs and they will never get it right because they don't think they have an issue! Trust me, I LIVE with one of those.

Get some back bone and start demanding better work or tell her you will replace her. See if she doesn't slow down then! Good luck. Put the whip on her - that should do the trick.
WOOPEE!!!!! YAHOO!!!!!! The doc SPELLED the patient's name!!!!!!!...

Yippee!!!!!!! I am jumping around like a little kid!!  Did someone finally get the message through?? I CAN NOT SEARCH THIS ACCOUNT FOR PATIENT NAMES!!! (or is it just a fluke?)

Had to share.  TeeHee

After readign my OP again, I spelled the words incorrectly -sm
in rush to send post. I mainly use Stedman's Radiology Words and lunotriquetral interosseous ligament is listed--w/o hyphen since I do radiology but just looked in the Ortho book and it is also listed there.

Thanks for taking time to list your references
difference in abbr and word spelled out
Hi Debra,

I think the difference here is impacted by 2 things:

1. If you are spelling the word out fully, then it looks dumb to join them:
10milligrams
But if you are writing it in ShortHand as we generally do in medical documents, I think it is abundantly clear to write:
10mg

2. Also we're talking about medical/scientific measure. When I had my transcription business the editorial policy concerning such was this:
If you are transcribing a medical/scientific measurement you join the value and the unit of measure:
2g
If you are transcribing OTHER than medical measurement, you write it out:
She has two houses locally. Of her three children, two are grown.
And Never:
She has 2 houses locally. Of her 3 children, 2 are grown.
No. Measurements are in numerals, all others are written out. That was OUR editorial policy. Others have different policies, and whatever policy is established is how it needs to be done.

I received a note from QA that I'd spelled the patient's name wrong

THROUGHOUT the report.  Since I don't keep a copy of the chart on my computer anymore, I can't go back and look at it to see what I did.  I vaguely remember though, 2 days later, that I had a patient that was not on the patient list so I spelled phonetically, marked it for QA that this was throughouit the report and sent it on its way.  I questioned the person telling me about the mistake as to whether it was spelled right in the demographics and a couple more questions trying to clear my confusion about what could have happened.  This is certainly not something that is my norm, for sure.  She replied once, but after asking another question and telling her that I'm really not trying to give her a hard time over this, she has not responded again.  Is it possible that someone QA'd my report, fixed the patient's name in the demographics but didn't look at the report body.  Perhaps I should have flagged every place that it is mentioned as well?  "The patient" certainly would have been a sure thing here but not allowed.

So now that I've ranted a little more over this I'll let it go (hopefully) but I just can't believe I'd have done this.  I even use "uj" in my Expander and change it to the patient's name with every report, just so I don't make a mistake remembering how to spell some of the names.  I guess that's the biggest reason why I'm having a hard time with this one, because I do the same think on EVERY report, uj=whatever the patient's name is as per the demographics on the patient.  AAARRRGGGHHHH.  It sure does bug me.

people speak and you see the words spelled out in your mind...
s
I see I spelled *grammar* wrong in my post above. *sigh*
Let me say it before anyone else! LOL
at least they spelled 'remuneration' correctly. Wow, free food! nm
x
some doctors dont think that is trivial. They expect doctor's name to be spelled right
When you are working for someone across the world, it is hard to find the name of that particular doctor.

She is right to put a blank for this.

I had an account that demanded the physician's name to be spelled correctly. They think of it as an insult.
it's spelled right. Exo means outside and you know what phrenic means. nm
