Shock collars are cruel on animals.

You can teach dogs not to bark without using shock treatments.

Sometimes shock collars are what works.
If you aren't shocking your dog for the fun of it, you aren't abusing them. Would you rather the dog have to get its voice box removed? I've seen it for chronic barkers whose owners are cited for noice complaints when nothing else has worked.
I dont use shock collars but do use a citronella collar
I have a big dog and know that people use what they know will work. Personally I have had some well meaning yet not very knowledgeable person stop me as I walk my very large dog and rip me a new SS-hole for using a prong collar. Note prong collars are very humane when used correctly.
Personally I would not use a shock collar but I have not done any homework on them either. I would be afraid of one of my children getting a shock or something like that however I am sure you have done your homework. BUT I would like to share what I have found that works. My dog wears a Citronella collar and it works wonderfully and with no danger to anyone else or himself. I have attached a link with a write up on them as well as a site that has them on sale if you are interested.

Again not trying to say your choice is wrong just offering another option you might not have considered. Hope you and yours have a wonderful thanksgiving.
Agree totally. I'd like to see an end to rodeos, too. So cruel to animals. nm
x
Have you considered the fact that If collars were that inhumane they would be illegal??

That is so cruel! You must be having a bad day and I think you should sm
apologize to the above poster. She needs us right now and you are just being plain, well, evil!
If there is something you want to talk about we are here for you too, although it seems you are so hard-faced that you don't need anyone, I bet - or you think you are just too good for "internet help..." Like we women (and few men) don't really have true feelings or families, or whatever you probably think of all of us...That's a shame. There are probably people here who can really help in your bitterness.
Very cruel, not necessary IMO. nm
.
Cruel?
I don't mean to be cruel, but do you have the skills for this job? Did you take the required courses in transcription? Are you aware coding pays better?
Again, not to be cruel, but spelling is very important, and you misspelled inept, which is a little ironic, because your post is all we have to go on as far as whether you are ready for the huge challenge of getting your own accounts. I've been doing this for 17 years, and I've never considered trying to manage my own accounts.
So this is my honest reaction to your post, and I'm hoping you find it polite, as I intend it to be.
why are some of you women so cruel?
There comes a point where we all kind of need each other, when we realize that for the most part, men are big dumb animals who do not know how to "be" there, which is what we essentially need. You as a female should be understanding and supportive when another one says how she is struggling as a "single mom." Women are so hateful towards each other when we're the only ones who make any sense on this planet! I know I sound like a man hater, but men can only do so much, and for those things I have a plumber and a maintenance man! Come on what happened to sisterhood!
it is not cool to be cruel, so why do you do it? nm
nm
I'd rather be fat and nice than skinny and cruel. NM

How can you people be so cruel and nasty?
She is obviously trying to do the best for her son, and at this point is trying to figure out what it is. I'm sure she would discuss this option with the doctor or counselor before she made a decision. Cruel and selfish, right. Look in the mirror.
I don't think it is cruel to admit your remaining parent - sm
into a nursing home. Those that think its terrible are just concerned with appearances I think, that and guilt themselves if they ever thought about it. My mom put her mom in a nursing home after she could not care for herself. My grandma actually thrived there. They got her off all her medication and she was felt a lot better, even got engaged to get married again, but broke it off shortly before she died. We lived in PA and her mom in FL. My mom's (adopted) family thought she was such a terrible person for putting her "mom" in a nursing home. My mom's adopted parents did not treat her well at all, would never tell her much about the adoption when she eventually found out about it in the 1950s (smell of scandel somewhere, this was 1935) and my grandparents never really ever wanted children. Needless to say my mom has a less than ideal childhood but she took care and upheld her "responsibilities". Some people take in their parent(s) because they want to make sure the $$$ if there is any stays in the family (or goes to them). I know that is the wheel turning in my DHs brain about his parents, though he says they would never re-marry after the death of the other. His mom has told me she will not remarry, but you never know do you. I think he is wrong about his dad though, I think his dad would do the exact same thing my dad did, i.e. remarry within a year of the mom/wife passing and say bye-bye to any substantial inheritence on a re-marriage. In my case I will "lose" (my husband's thinking) out on about $140K which my husband deeply resents unfortunately. It has caused a lot of distention in the last 2 years between me and my DH that is. I am cool with my dad, it's his life and money; and I have pointed out to him a zillion times that inheritence is a gift, not a right. But yes, to be honest it is disappointing, but as my DH expects to get close to $1 mil from his parents I think we will survive (in a way I hope they disinherit him). Greed can cause all sorts of problems. Along with responsibility comes motive in some cases. I do not want to take in either of my DHs parents, but his fear/greed will induce him to have whichever one is left move in with us probably in the next 5-10 years (they are 76 and 71 right now). Sad.
Shock
is more like it. U can definitely tell who the "favorite" is. Just makes me SICK, (excuse me while I vomit). Okay, better now. Sure hope for a new job soon. Have sent out plenty of resumes, anything has got to be better than this.
Yeh, I was in shock, how could they?
I guess this is the last season? What an awful way to go out. blah!
This was a shock to me.....
My DH works in public education and some stupid kids have gotten hold of his cell phone number and have made prank calls over the past few months. They've blocked their number so we can't trace it. The cell phone company can see the number but won't divulge it due to privacy rights. Recently they've gotten our home phone number and have called a couple times. Nothing threatening, just stupid kid prank call stuff. Our home phone company doesn't record incoming calls, so no luck there either. Last night I got a very WEIRD phone call late at night which was a text relay call from a computer, much like the TTY calls that the deaf make. The relay operator just reads what it typed. This call was vulgar and sexual. We just hung up. After a little research I find out that these relay calls are not recorded in any fashion, so you can not find out who made them. The laws TOTALLY protect the privacy of the caller. Even the police cannot trace them. Can you believe that these operators have to relay ANYTHING under the umbrella of privacy, even death threats, not to mention sexual stuff. I am in shock. From what a read, it would take an act of congress to stop this. It just seems like the criminal has all the protections and the victim has nothing. Upside down world. Have you ever heard of these relay calls? I had not.
Yep, a big shock . . .
Should we take bets? Is he dead? I think not.
Wow!! I'm in shock...
I transcribed a Hospice note earlier today. The patient is a 99-year-old woman with end-stage coronary artery disease. She lives in adult foster care. The caregivers at the adult foster care have a problem with Hospice for some reason and are threatening to raise this woman's rent by $1000.00 per month if she goes on Hospice. UNREAL!!
Anyway, Hospice will contact the proper law enforcement agency if this happens as it is discrimination...but I just couldn't believe what I was hearing when I transcribed it.
Also in shock....sm
I thought it would be Chris as well, especially since he always seemed to have pretty good performances and reviews by the judges. He is definitely the best singer.
shock value? nn
x
It is not a shock that they want their
employees to work their scheduled hours.
That was a shock until I listened
to a video by MSN. Rumor has it that the show was fixed and Chris was going to win it - according to the judges, especially Simon. In order to prove the rumor was wrong - bye-bye Chris. Check on the video, it makes you wonder. Catherine should have been voted off.
using shock collar
Be careful using that shock collar as it is negative reinforcement. Dogs bark for a reason, learn to read their barks, could be warning of an intruder nearby, or something like a critter approaching their territory. Get books on clicker use & treats.....they can learn words like "quiet", "settle". Takes some time to train but worth it in long run. I have 3 German Shepherds 2 outdoors in kennel, always keep 1 inside....wonderful deterrent. They only bark when something is going on.
Test the shock on yourself first - here's why
My friend put a shock collar on her dog without testing it - and the dog surely was quiet -- WHILE he was strangling to death on a trapped lead.
Frankly, using a shock collar is cruel and selfish - but if you must inflict pain to control your animals (versus just TRAINING them to be quiet!) at least test the shock on yourself to be sure its not stronger than you intend.
Here's one way to train a dog to be quiet - as told to me by a professional dog trainer: When my dogs were in their crate for the night - they would whine/bark for my attention. This trainer had me run out to the crate and bang THE CRATE and yell 'quiet' at the crate - not the dog.
I asked why does this work?
Answer: Would YOU want to invite (with barking) that crazy person back to your crate? Dogs don't like this type of noise - and they learn to associate barking with someone banging on their crate.
I had to do it just twice in one night- and after that just the command "QUIET" worked.
OMG! I was in shock for about 10 minutes first time I saw that!
Weird, but funny
Shock is abusing whether you intend it or not
and as to the better MANNERS challenge, what does that have to do with anything? You can have a well-mannered dog *without* painfully shocking it into submission.
You CAN NOT defend your use of the shock collar
THAT's why you may choose not to respond again.
Your "defense" above is stunning. No doubt you love your dog and take good care of him/her. But you ARE still using pain to control your pet when there ARE OTHER METHODS that don't involve pain.
Dismiss our points all you want - at the end of the day you chose to take the easy way out with regard to solving the barking problem.
WE who don't use pain to teach make YOU sick? Give me a royal break.
I posted a simple way to teach your dog not to bark - did you even bother to read it?
not a shock - they were bought or joined up with Healthscribe
who has a huge office in India and does not make it a secret that they outsource. Healthscribe also got into a bit of trouble a couple of years ago for "altering" lines on US transcriptionists;
I heartily agree with the other poster. You have the shock of your life coming SM
anyway, why involve children in it?
Honestly, good luck to you. But you can't take care of your kids and be a good transcriptionist, let alone make any money, not at first.
For all the animals out there
Suffering, with this video they showed us what they're going through. I feel it won't be long before this information becomes mainstream and I think the majority of people who see it won't stand for it, people who have more power than us who can take strong action. I'm glad there are so many of us out there who care this much here on this board!
Different for animals?
Is ophthalmology different for animals? How many Veterinary Ophthalmogists are there around? Do dogs wear contacts? Just curious.
heat and animals
Thank you for keeping your animals inside. I do too. I have three dogs, four cats and two birds and they are right by my side. I do take the dogs out in the morning and hose them down, then they come into the house (what a mess..no biggie, I can clean it up, ya know?).
Animals need help in New Orleans

Anybody want to help the animals in New Orleans, just go to the below link and check out what you can do, many many displaced animals there that need your help.

Leave the animals alone
And what would happen if man wasnt on the earth to keep the population of animals under control? Nature would take care of itself..Man puts its hands into things and screws up time and time again..Leave the animals alone, they will handle the population. There is enough meat in every grocery store..more than enough..leave the living, breathing, beautiful animals alone..They were not put here for us to kill or amuse ourselves with..they are sharing the earth with us.they want to live just like we want to live..Leave the animals alone.
LEAVE THE ANIMALS ALONE
Very well said, abc, I totally agree with you. Leave the animals alone.
NO !! they do NOT test on animals.
x
please read if you care about animals....
A friend of mine gave me a video about 4 years ago about factory farming and the fur trade and where our meat supply comes from. Please to to Farm Sanctuary on the web for videos, books, more info. But that video turned me into a vegetarian that moment! I have always loved animals, but some reason never made the connection. They feel pain like we do. They are thinking beings as well and know when they are going to slaughter. Each vegetarian saves 80 ANIMALS A YEAR. It is appalling the way these animals are treated not to mention the chemicals and food they are fattened up with during their short lives... this is going into YOUR food chain. Sorry to get on my soap box... but I feel very passionately about this cause. If you are interested, please research it further. The videos are extremely hard to watch, but that's the point --- it wakes you up! Harm no thing. Thanks for reading. Please don't bother blasting me if you disagree. It is my opinion. It will not change. You do not have to agree.
Shoot, my animals are all cute.
My dog will jump on her hind legs and "box" with you by smacking your hands with her front paws.
My cat likes to go berserk inside cardboard boxes. He also perches on my desk and dips his paws in my betta bowl. Then he climbs all the way up the screen door and yowls if I'm outside. Typical cat behavior, I guess, but this is my first kitty so it's funny. He's a loverboy, too. He crawls up on me, sticks his head under my hair, chews my hair, bites my neck, purrs and goes to sleep.
I cannot use Mary Kay because they test on animals - sm
But I do use Estee Lauder and Oil of Olay. I consulted three dermatologists on getting Botox and they all said no way for me because I have no WRINKLES around my eyes or forehead ... at 39 years of age!
Animals have more rights than babies do!

Feeling a little sad for you "as they are about animals"
Instead of at least quietly agreeing (or disagreeing) that this action was awful you chose to attack the poster. Don't understand why you felt you had to do it. I too am sickened by abortion, child abuse and neglect. I am also saddened that man's best friend could by the thousands be killed like that. I am not saying that it rates up there with abortion in my mind, but gosh, that was an undeniably cruel thing and it certainly causes me to give pause.

I think keeping animals caged
or "boxed in" and this includes, birds, snakes, turtles, and yes, keeping cats inside a house for their entire life cheats them of being able to live in their natural environment and doing what comes naturally to their species. Their exercise is greatly reduced and so is their instinctive behavior to feed, hunt or whatever it is they do. How would you like to live inside a box for your entire life? Just my opinion, you are entitled to yours.
Yes, they're all indoor animals...sm
The 4 cats they brought when we got married stay downstairs in the basement and my stepdaughter's room down there, and the rest of the animals are upstairs. Needless to say, we'll be looking for a larger house soon!
General liabilty and E&O are two different animals.
I used to sell insurance. General liability protects your companies assets when something you do causes harm to either a person or property. E&O, aka professional liability, aka Errors & Omissions comes into play when you make a mistake and/or omit something and thereby cause financial harm to your client. I can't see the need for an independent MT to carry either of these - unless you're like the one who has the government contracts. You can get a small GL only policy from Hartford for about $400 a year and they are the only ones who will write those. The E&O is closer to the $5k a year range (or more) and there is no need to do that - not when all of our work is sent through the MTSO's QA people. The MTSO holds the burden for that.
Oh my Gosh - WEGMANS has cruelty to animals??
That is the only place I will do my grocery shopping - I haven't seen the video yet, but please say it isn't soooo. There are only a few Wegmans - Where will I goooooo??!!!?!?
anyone have animals cute/quirky habits?
I live next to a manufactured lake, and there are dozens of ducks and birds hanging around there. My dog usually likes to go up to them or chase them. He also loves people, runs up to them too, very friendly and can be generally laid back. Although, when he comes across a stray feather lying on the ground, he will literally approach it like a mouse would a mouse trap, and then jump back about two or three feet, and then veer as far away around it as possible. This has been going on for a couple months, no idea why. Today, I picked up a feather and set him on my lap and brought it close to him and said "its okay" and right when I touched him with it, he squirmed, almost flipped completely in the air, and tore himself loose from his collar and ran far away from me (never does that anytime, sticks to me like glue), so now he walks around the lake like its a mine field, jumps and wimpers even if he touches a feather. The strangest thing in the world to me.
And where exactly do you think that the meat in the grocery store comes from?? ANIMALS!
nm
One of my daughter's soft stuffed animals....
when she's not looking!! It's a soft little pink elephant, not scratchy at all.
I already do pray. But why not spirits? Animals are more sensitive, you know
nm
Being a mother, I couldn't tolerate animals
walking around infected with rabies that would be a threat to my family, because as much as I love animals, my family is still my priority. On the other hand though, no they shouldn't be clubbed to death and killed even if not infected. This is China though, and they have no respect for most people...much less animals. It's sad, but unfortunately the way it is. :(
God gave us dominion over animals for beginners. sm
Good or bad snake, if it's in my house, it's a goner. If you don't like it, then sue me lady. Your statements are foolish and uneducated. And you're the one who probably believes that snakes have feelings. Give me a break. Good Lord!
