I should also mention that I recommended this headset to my team when I was supervising because the company-issued headsets were basically garbage. I had a lot of good reactions, but a few people didn't like "over-the-head" style because it smooshed their hair or it just wasn't the best one for them. Hearing is a very individual thing and what works for one might not work for another, but quite a few of my crew got these and most seemed to like them.
These Kensingtons fold for travel (a lot of people use them on airplanes), by the way, and you can use them with any other portable audio like a Walkman or iPod, so I think all my folks kept theirs even if they decided to use them for other things than transcribing due to the fact that it's so inexpensive.

LINE COUNT/MONEY CONTROL
Anyone work for a company that is totally controlling of every line you type? They let you go like hell when they need you (Mondays, Tuesdays, when the backlog is way out there) basically say giddy-up and away you go. You're doing well, but now it's time to hold down your earnings, they pull you back like a horse and now you lose all you earned for the week. Hey-Hey, they're happy, they got that TAT and backlog right where they want it, and your pay as well.
Would like to hear what kind of other games these companies are up to as this is my first time working from home, thought with many, many years' experience in this field, it does not take a rocket scientist to figure it out. How cruel they are. Maybe some horse will kick them in the ass.

line counts in Ft. Worth area
I am fairly new to transcription and have just moved to the Ft. Worth area from Florida. Can someone please tell me an average line rate for what ICs are making in this area?
Also, I have a friend that bills for blank line spaces (like when you double space.) Is this a correct way to bill? I don't think the doctors she works for know that they are paying her for blank lines.
Any info will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Someone might recommend a type of equalizer. Headphones with a sound control on the line help, too.

but that all depends on what company and VR platform you are talking about.
I second the massage
I got a gift certificate for a massage and really that was one of the best gifts ever. It is something you normally don't get for yourself. One bad thing, though, once you get one, you gotta get another.

I don't know how far along your carpal tunnel is, but massage can prevent it. maybe it can help it too, even though you have it. deep tissue/therapeutic massage. the muscles around the median nerve should be kept supple and loose and relaxed to not squeeze down on it. it saved me and many others. I maintain with once a month treatments. it can be expensive, but what are you willing to sacrifice, is the question. hope this helps. :)

I've been working in the office lately and the wellness department and employee health offer massages to employees and you can use payroll deduction to pay. It's something like $10 for a 15 minute chair massage and $30 for a 30 minute table massage. For the 15 minute massage, I could take a 15 minute break and run up and get a massage!
Maybe I'll give it a try. Maybe even worth a drive in once or twice a month for a massage when I'm back working at home!

Foot pedal control/knee control? (sm)
My sewing machine has a knee control built into the side of the cabinet and I find this very comfortable. I would like to somehow do the same with foot pedal I use for transcription. Can figure out how to mount it, but having trouble adjusting it so the 3 pedals are not an issue. ANyone done this or have any input?

Though I have not had experience with this type of modification, I have repaired numerous footpedals and have some information that may be helpful. Generally, the footpedal is comprised of the primary circuit board, the wiring to the computer, and the three switches for play, rewind, and fast forward. These switches are easily removed from the pedal with a screwdriver. With basic soldering, you can lengthen the wiring to each switch, or even replace them with different switches you can get at a local electronics store. With a little bit of creative engineering, you could mount some knee -controllable switches that could control the footpedal.

anyone not using one. You can make expansions for almost every phrase imaginable and cut your Keystrokes by at least half. Even whole paragraphs can be expanded for the docs who say the same thing all the time. You will get your money back on your investment in a month I'll bet.
I can image that once we train the VR reports by our expert
editing and corrections, the VR software will start producing more accurate reports. Unfortunately, when that time does arrive, there will not be a need for as many medical editors/transcriptionists as there are now. I suspect at that point we will be competing for MT jobs, and our rates will go even lower than they are now. I hate to paint a somber picture here, but this is what the hospitals have been striving to accomplish since the mid-1980s, when they decided to outsource the transcription to MTSOs to avoid paying hourly rates and benefits.

A gross line is anything on a line is a line. A line set at 65 characters means it sm
has 1-inch margins on each side. The maximum number of characters on that line would be 65 and that includes spaces. If there is 1 character on that line it is a line.
A standard 65-character line usually consists of 65 characters with spaces unless, of course, the employer does not pay for spaces and then it would be 65-characters without spaces.

You can get an idea in the difference using documents you have already created, assuming you're working in Word. Simply open a document and check the properties. Click on the statistics tab and you will see the number of lines as well as characters with and without spaces. If you're currently getting paid by the line and a line is 65-characters with spaces, do the math and see how that number of lines compares with the number of lines in your stats.
One thing to keep in mind: if you have a blank line between paragraphs, instead of hitting the enter key twice, format your document to give the appearance of blank lines between paragraphs.

Confront him about his actions. Do not hold back. If it continues, then discuss the problem with all your family members. You are letting him run your life. Then let your mother et AL decide whether they want to see you on your terms or if they prefer to have no relationship.
All this animosity will eat your alive. Get it off your chest and you do not need a counselor to do it. Just be yourself and be honest and upfront with him.

Personally I would just stop having anything to do with her. I would tell your husband why and no one else. Just stop doing anything with her, talking to her, etc. If you have kids, unless the kids are asking to see her, carry on with your life. And don't say it isn't that easy. It is. And what she does is what she does. What you do is what you do. What you and your husband have together is outside of what she does. Keep it simple. Don't say anything negative about her. I know you have hurt but you said you worked though it. You can do that with this too. Be strong.

which allows the next keystroke to be entered as the command, in your case hit control B. When the box comes up, make sure the control box is checked, not shift or Alt, and then click okay. repeat at end of phrase.

Although working from home is great - I have always felt as if the company that I worked for was more in control of my life than I was. Telling me when I had to have something done - even though they never live up to their own standards. One very well-thought of company on this board is just that way - I have QA sitting out there from the weekend and it hasn't been checked yet, but once it is, they will expect me to have it done in 30 minutes and to the hospital - I'm ready to give up this profession or vocation or whatever anyone wants to call it.

Some EXText users have the ability to reveiw old jobs--say you want to look at a physical exam for the dictator you're working on or you want to verify a dosage for a drug on a patient you're working . You can Control/S, then in the screen that pops up you can chose by date, trans ID, provider name, patient name, etc. In the documents that come up based on the parameters that you entered, you can select one of those documents. It's also a way to review what QA filled for any blanks you might have had. When you are finished reviewing, you Control/T to get out of that document and your working document pops back up. Working documents you Control/N. Reviewing documents (read only), Control/T.

I don't know nor do I have control over the MT
community. What I can control is my own career. Other MTs have to take control of their careers, too. IMHO, to work for an MTSO/get paid by production as a newbie MT is career suicide. I never made less than, equal to or close to a housekeeper as a newbie. I started as a medical-legal word processor of sorts - self-taught - took classes here and there and the rest is history. My advice to new MTs is to get a job as a file clerk or other admin in a hospital or med group and work your way into a MT clerk and then MT position. You already have your foot in the door by the fact that you are an employee of the hospital or med group
