I have seen many application forms online that request the SS#. I do not care how good their offer might be, but I am not filling out an application form requesting that info. Since even big nationals do this and have lots of employees, they must find plenty of people having no problem with it, which I find surprising. Nobody should ever fill in a SS# on a job application. They should have the backbone and refuse to reveal that info!
