Right now my office is in the family room...

we have a separate living room also...it is fine for now because I have an 8-year-old and a 15-month-old that need my attention so I can't be too far away...but we are planning on moving and I want an extra room for an office/playroom...maybe try some of those noise-reducing headphones if you can't escape the noise...

Have room just for my office
I have a really big house and not that many people so have my own comfy quarters. I have a television in the room and it is on all the time but not a distraction for me, rather just sound around and the news when I need it.
Have no office. Just the corner of the dining room. nm

My office is in a separate room, yet close enough
I can hear what is going on. I have a shock collar that I put on my dogs to keep them quiet when they are outside (I don't have to shock them but very rare occasion). I work late afternoon/early evening so that part of my schedule, pets and husband are in bed and I have total peace and quiet.
I started in the file room of the urology office I worked. And I was not
going to be a file clerk for the rest of my life. I only had 2 semesters of terminology, no other professional schooling. They had a fresh from a Mayo Fellowship peds urologist coming in and needed somebody to help with the typing. First it was half file-room and half transcription. Finally he was so busy, I became full time. I was there from 1990 until 2003. I then left to free-lance and start my own business. He has since moved to Arizona and I still type for him after all these years.
I started in the file room of a 6 doctor urology office....
The file room in any office is a nuclear dumping ground...any paper that nobody knows what to do with gets dumped there. Then and there I made up my mind that I was NOT going to be a file clerk for the rest of my life.

I actually started by filing part time and typing part time. When we got a new Peds Urologist in the office, fresh from a fellowship at Mayo, I was right there. We used tapes back then as that was in the early 1990's. As he could fill up a 2 sided tape with 8 hours of seeing patient's, the other girl in the office did not want any part of his work and left it for me. The rest, as they say, is history.

I had no professional training, just 2 semesters of medical terminology and a killer spelling ability.

After I had typed urology, I was then farmed out to our other offices and I learned GI/GU, family practice, sleep labs etc.

I now work for a major hospital on the west side of Michigan and still type for my Peds urologist. The only difference is that he now has his practice in AZ, not MI.

If you can find somebody willing to take a chance on you with no experience, jump on it with both feet. You will be glad you did.
Check with your tax person for certainty but I have a room solely used for my home office and I even
:)
I deduct all expenses that relate to my home office-% of utilities, taxes, repairs to that room, --s
mortgage (we do not plan to sell our house so this deduction will not affect us)as my office is used only for that purpose, internet, phone, I print out a daily schedule so paper/ink, computer repairs, pens, pencils, tape, staples, file cabinets, storge bins for tax recepts/tax returns, file folders. Anything/everything I use to do my job.

I was using mileage for another account where I pick up tapes every day, but found for me the time it took to keep track of the mileage, write it down, add it up was not worth the effort so I quit doing it this year.
I was sent a courtesy copy of the office notes for a family member once.
This was soon after I became an MT. I was so appalled at the sloppiness of the typing and the rampant use of inappropriate abbreviations that we switched doctors. At least I knew what the abbreviations were for, not sure the typical lay person would have.
A nice sunny room just for me in our finished lower level. Love my cocoon room.

I have never had my own room. I shared a room with my sister, went away to college sm
and had a roommate (whom I am still close to) for 4 years, moved back home and back to sharing a room with my sister while she went to a local college and then got married. In fact, after 17 years of marriage, this is the first time in my life that I have had my own dresser, not just the top two or bottom two drawers!

I could never live alone. Not for fear but for loneliness. I like my alone time but I love to have people around.

Have most people had good luck with their MQ office closing and moving to the regional office. Have
things gotten better or worse for you.
Yes, I lost mine. I upgraded the Office 2000 package to Office 2003. sm
I have over 2000 autocorrect entries and lost them all as well as my supplemental dictionary for my Stedman's spellcheck. Lots of grief!

Maybe you will be lucky and not lose anything. Good luck to you.
Might be able to rent one from an office supply or office machine repair shop

Office politics. That is why I enjoy working at home. In the office,
people are in other people business. Just mind your own business.

i live in MA and $1200-$1400 a month is what good health insurance costs, ie $20-$40 copays.  it was just passed into law that if you live in MA you have to have medical insurance so without being self-employed, you can go right to BCBS etc and get a plan directly from the major health insurace companies, but for a family plan and a decent income bracket, forget it.  the prices are outragous.  right now my husband pays $120 a week for family plan and this is after his employer pays 30% of the total cost.  we have $20 copays, but we have a $2000 individual deductable per year with a $4000 family deductible cap.  so when my daughther needed her tonsils out, $2000 and when my son broke his arm, $2000.  someone on this board has to be able to tell you what they pay for insurance through their company as an employee.  good luck.
Can anyone suggest an office in MQ that is not run like this Amherst office. They are absolutely
pathetic. I wonder how many other MTs are in that office in the same situation.
Just DQS from my office was transferred and the rest are getting on DQS before the office closes.

NO, THERE IS NOT ENOUGH ROOM
in the insane asylums for all us newbies !!!!!!
Seriously,I do turn the speed up one notch from the middle for one or two excellent dictators, but any more than that, and most dictators would sound like chipmunks!!
I have room -- do you?

Looking at all of those thousands of displaced, hardworking, honest people and families you have to know that their homes and jobs are simply gone.  They will need to start over elsewhere.

Can someone create an information bank of those of us willing to offer housing availablity (such as an extra bedroom) on a short-term basis.  Sort of a temporary arrangement for the family to have shelter and food while looking for a new job/home etc?

Is there an agency for this?

I'm a room mom too...I always sm

order from Oriental Trading Company.  Tons of inexpensive crafts for all ages.  Sometimes the teacher will take up a 50 cent or 1 dollar donation from each child to cover the cost, but generally I just pay for it myself and write it off as a donation.

I have my own room
used to be the third bedroom. Just recently budget decorated (yard sale finds, etc) it in a moderate retro look, black/gray computer, black accessories, peach wall and funky 1950s barkcloth curtains and bulletin boards (can't live without a place to tack up reminders, etc), black iron and oak bakers rack, painted a tall chest of drawers black to hold office supplies, black bookcase and two dark oak desks. Sounds kinda of dark with all the black, but it is realy quite light with the peach on the walls. Going for a more clean, streamlined look (Previously had country birdhouse decor). Even with my own office, I'm constantly fighting paperwork!! Ugh!
When I was room mom.....
I coordinated parties, helped out with field trips, that sort of thing. I had student names and their parents and telephone numbers so I could call around if I needed help with something (like a Christmas party). Also, to introduce yourself, send a note home with each child introducing yourself and letting them know if they have questions, they can call. I had parents call me just to find out my thoughts on different things going in the class. I loved being room mom. You get to know the kids. Also, let the teacher know that you are available to help her. Good luck!!
room mom

Oh boy, does that bring home memories! I was not a success....the first thing you do is take a Valium an hour before you go! Seriously though, talk to your co-mom, then the teacher, ask her about the dos and don'ts of parties, etc. I think the thing that got me the worst was the little chairs I had to sit on! Lot of trouble getting down on one, then getting up!

The little ones (I'm talking kindergarten) are excited to be there, they get noisy, and there are a lot of them! Also, there are always one or two that cry at first, one might go somewhere and cover up with a blanket and stay there the entire time, sucking his/her thumb! Of course, somebody always wets their pants or worse in the beginning. I thought I would lose my mind, but I kept smiling!

Best of luck! Remember, your offspring will be so happy and proud that you are there, so hold the banner high!

room mom sm

In addition to coordinating parties, etc., the room moms at my daughter's school usually have some kind of a get together so that all the moms can get to know each other.  Also, it gives the room mom a chance to go over things that will be happening in the class.

Last year, we had a little "party" at the room mom's house with snacks, etc.  That was a great way to get to know the other moms.  The teacher usually meets with the room mom before the get together at the beginning of the school year.

The room mom also asks for volunteers for any party, field trip, etc.  We always have plenty of volunteers which makes the room mom's job a lot easier!

Hope that helps!

Too bad she's not in the same room with you
so you could ask her if there was something you could help her with so you could both get back to knocking out the reports.
got room in that bag for me too??? --nm

Agree! There's room for everyone. :) nm

chat room
On the main board, menu on the left says "chat". I have clicked on it several times and it always says no one in the room.
there is enough room on this board for a little bit of everything.

In AOL chat room.

Chat room
Just wondering why there is so few in chat room.  Whenever I go to chat, no one is there.
She is in our utility room, so she is out
of the rain.  We have a chest freezer in there which puts out heat.  We also have our hot water heater in there, which puts out heat and we also leave a light on for her, which generates some heat.  She has room to lay down and stretch a little, just not as much room as a big dog really needs.
Have radios in every room -- all do it. nm

Always room for improvement

I do agree that they have areas where they need to improve but I promise you that they are working hard at making changes for the better for the good of the MTs out there.  I'm sure I'm going to get slammed for coming to their defense (I can take it), but I just find it a bit hypocritical that so many people are so quick to bash them but yet don't hesitate to send folks to the organization when they need something such as the QA Document.

I probably shouldn't have jumped to conclusions (yes, I'm guilty), as I don't have any idea if those who posted above referring this person to AAMT are pro-AAMT or not.  But, still want to say hooray for seing SOMETHING positive being posted on this board about AAMT.  No, they are not perfect but they have achieved great things and greater things to come, I feel confident.

WAY better - now there's actually room on the stage...
for all the others!
Room mom anyone? I need some help/advice. sm
i have never been room mom but got elected somehow this year of being room mom.  Where do i start and what do i actually do other than help coordinate parties?  i got sent home a list today of all the students names that are in the class and my co-room mom's name.  do i contact the teacher and say what do i do or what?  HELP!!!!!  i have no clue............
Emergency Room
I type ER notes at my current job and I get the same thing.  I bet 90% of my reports are for sore throats.  I actually had one a few weeks ago for a cold!  Come on now people!  Everyone knows there is no cure for a cold!  That is why most of us cannot afford health insurance.  I had a couple bring a baby to the ER because it spit up during the night (just once).  Come on!  Babies do spit up.  Natural.  This happens.  Buy a baby book!
room where you transcribe
I am finding it difficult these past few days to focus. my computer is in my living room, off to a corner and I have a partitioner dividing my room as my living space downstairs is all open.  I live by myself so I really have no distraction.  I have a small dog who is really well behaved. My question is did anyone have any luck with moving their office to another room in trying to stay focus?  I have my upstairs where one room is empty but at the time I moved in I thought Imight feel too secluded being up there but now I am wondering maybe that is what I need.  Thanks. I am almost answering my own question as I am writing this!!
I use a separate room
I have a 2 bedroom place, hubby and I use the master room and I transcribe in the "office." This keeps me, for the most part, without distractions other than those I create myself. I set up a place for my cats to sleep so they don't sleep on the computer desk, and have found that this works the best for me...very short attention span when I tried it in the living room. Just don't move work into the bedroom you sleep in, might cause sleep problems.
chat room
anyone ever use MT stars chat room?  Just discovered it.
chat room

Hi,

Wondering if anyone wants to get together in the chat room.  LOL, that sounds a little scary.  No seriously, I am always looking to see if anyone is in the chat room and never a person there.  Anyone interested in meeting in there for some chatting?

Chat room
I would be interested, may be we could get a group together at a specific time and share experiences?

Chat room
Everyone agrees they want to chat, but no one sets a time/place. Rather than private e-mails, lets set a time here for all to see. Tonight would have been good for me, but no one else committed. Possibly if a time were posted here, as the time approached more would check in. Let's try it. Tomorrow night 01/01/2007, 7:00 EST?
Did't Know There Was a Chat Room!!

There's only so much room for the subject
Then you have to put it inside so it can be read.

In answer to your question, I think it depends on your bank. They actually have a timeframe before they HAVE to release it to your account. Could be a couple days. My bank's pretty good, and it's usually available right away.
