that's right but first you have to set it to backup so that you can restore

Only if you have a backup of your normal.dot file. System Restore will not
xx
You can use the AutoCorrect Utility that comes with Word to backup and restore ... sm
or just copy your .acl file to your flash drive. The name of the template with the AutoCorrect Utility macro depends on your version of Word. Word 97 is macros8.dot, Word 2000 is macros9.dot (has to be downloaded from the Microsoft site), and 2002/2003 is support.dot. You open the template and follow the instructions.
You can find your .acl file by adding an entry and searching for *.acl by the date you created the entry. You may have to check the option to search hidden files and folders and you may have to change your view in the search box to Details to see dates.
Formatted AutoCorrect entries are stored in the normal.dot. Those are entries you have added formatting such as bold or italics or multi-line entries.
backup files......sm
Maybe talk to them about backing up all files at the end of each week/month on discs. I certainly would never leave them on an FTP site. Maybe explain to them this would be a security risk. I would give them the discs, let them deal with keeping them, and they could pull up whatever they need. Your job is to provide transcription services as an IC, not keep their files.
You can backup some types of files but not programs.
You can probably set your computer to automatically back up critical files but you're not going to be able to completely back up everything, like OS or program, because that would be illegal.
You can set a restore point on your computer so that you can return your computer to that point should there be a problem. This is always a good idea to do before installing new software.
If you right mouse click on your hard drive (usually C:) and choose properties, it will tell you both how big your drive is, how much space you have used and how much you have free. Only you can decide how big of a USB or Zip drive you will need based on that info.
lost files. I worship the god of system restore.
That said, once a week i copy everything I value onto CD and make 2 copies. One goes to my parents house and one I keep on hand. My parents live 30 miles away and I consider that a small price to pay for peace of mind. I had a major computer malfunction once and I was down for almost 3 weeks. It was a nightmare. I have since learned...back up, back up, back up. Good luck with retrieving or finding your lost informaiton.
System Restore does not affect documents, only program files.
xx
System restore does not affect documents, only program files.
You will not lose any documents you've created. Restore does nothing to the normal.dot or other templates.
backup, backup, backup!! Always, make this a habit even with your auto corrects. (sm)

Temp files disappear when you shut down Word. System restore does not recover documents .

Time to get a backup!
Well actually more like a primary. This would be my third job, really, if that. As an IC you should try to have more than one job, really. Never put all your eggs in one basket. That way, if one falls off, you have your other. When one slows up, I ask for more work at the other to make up income.
Maybe in the recycling bin? Or you could restore your computer to an earlier time?

Date with keyboard on Friday to have time for
My twin granddaughters, the dynamic duo, (17 months) who will be spending the rest of the weekend with Gram and "Aunnie" (my 11-year-old). Can't wait to play and spoil, spoil, spoil!
I probably will be in bed and sound asleep after they leave Sunday at 7:00. :)
You might have to do a system restore to the time before she sent file. Vista is still too buggy
s
nevermind. I found it, I thought the date/time
button was for actual date and time, not the settings of the footpedal to rewind, play and fastforward. The achives of MTstars helped me figure that out!
Previous owners were jerks....dog got hit by a car, by the time they took it - sm
to the vet it had gangrene. They told the vet to put the dog down (a year old)...vet called a Husky rescue organization who "rescued" him and had the necessary surgery done. My family adopted him about 2 years ago....great dog, keeps our lab company too. He can run like the wind which is pretty amazing.
You may have gotten it back from the recycle bin, but system restore does not restore documents.

Best battery backup with a reasonable amount of time - just lost report when elec blinked Grrrr

Have to disable Norton Internet Sec & Del all Temp files every time, why???
I cannot get the links to stay but I know it has to be due to something in Norton because if I disable Norton Internet Security and then go to Tools, Internet Options, choose General tab, then Temporary Files, Delete Files, Delete all off line content, and hit okay, then I get them back, but they don't stay consistently. :(
Can anyone tell me what needs to be changed/added in Norton's Internet Security to keep the links/forums available in the blue/on the left side??? I have tried everything I can think of. I sure would appreciate your help.
TIA.
Doc trying to go digital and having a heck of a time/can't open files. Please see message.
I am working with a doctor's office who has an Olympus recorder (I think it's the W-10). She has been trying to send me a sound file. She sent a sound file that was left in the recorder from about a year ago to see if it would work and it opened up just fine for me with my transcription player (Philips Executive SpeechMike kit).
Since that time, she has tried to send many more test dictations that she just recorded herself to try and I am unable to open up any of them. She says that when she downloads the sound file from the recorder to her computer it is a WAV file, but as soon as she tries to email it to me, it changes to a VAL file extension.
This is quite frustrating for both of us and I am trying to find any reason at all that this is not working (since it did work on the first dictation that someone else had recorded previously but won't work since on anything else). This makes me think it might be something she is doing while recording? Is anyone able to tell me anything she might be doing wrong that might be causing this problem? Or any suggestions on anything else we can do?
I did download the voice software that came with her recorder. I am able to play the files there, but not on my Philips transcription player, which I need to do to transcribe the files. As I said before, the first file she sent did play on my transcription player, but none of the files she sent since then will work. I would greatly appreciate any help or suggestions you might have at all. Thank you.
I would not; most of the time those type files, although not usually hard medical terms, take lots l
to type and are very difficult as it is hard to hear with background noise, different speakers, usually no macros, etc. I think they are worth more pay, not less. I also get paid by the word at 0.008 and had figured mine to be about 0.09/line as well in the past. stick with where you are.
Filezilla is the software used to transfer files to an FTP server where the files "reside".

Converting voice files to digital files
I have a Voice Solutions dictation system that will happily convert DS4000 voice files to digital when they are downloaded (wave files). However, it will not recognize any other files for conversion. I had a physician download .WAM files from his DS-30 and my dictation system would not convert it. Anyone have any suggestions? I would greatly appreciate any input.
Thanks!!!
Did you save files in .rtf format? The files need to be
as a Word document or it won't count them. Could be the problem.
About system restore, sorry about that
nm
I wonder if you can use System Restore
to recover that document. That worked for me once.
Have you tried doing a system restore?
.
You can restore your system, but I'm not sure if that will do it (sm)
Could it be in your recycle bin? If you see anything in there that could be it, right click and restore. If that doesn't help, you can restore your whole system back to a certain date. I have done this before when I got a virus I couldn't delete. Start, Run, msconfig <enter>, launch system restore. You will be given the chance to pick a date to restore back to.
Restore your computer to the day before he came.sm
Start, all programs, accessories, system tools, system restore, then follow directions. Hope this helps.
do you have system restore?
If you use/have system restore set up, you can go back to the date prior to this problem, and things should go right back to normal....read about system restore on your system in the HELP (F1) area
System Restore
Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Restore.
You can also restore your system...
Go to Start, then All Programs, then Accessories, System Tools, then pick SYSTEM RESTORE.
Pick a date you're positive was before the virus was contracted, and restore to that date.
BTW, poster above about the malwarebytes site is correct...It works, and it's also pretty cool to watch it run and "quarantine" the viruses. My computer had 67 of them at one time, unbeknownst to me.
Good luck!!!
backup
if we all don't demand that we get a description of how they came up with this they're going to think that we're okay with this - I AM NOT!! We should not accept at face value what MQ does because they have never been up front with anyone. Have you ever noticed when you have a concern how they somehow either don't answer or talk around it so much that you just say f___ it and give up because you're so tired of sending emails and/or calling here and there to try to get a decent answer, which we all know by now MQ doesn't have a decent bone in their whole organization, especially upper management!!
I have tried asking to be taken off a backup
account which I absolutely despise, but to no avail, and I think that is part of why I feel like I do. I have a good supervisor, but on this point we obviously do not see eye to eye. thanks for the input though.
ESP backup
Go to C: then DocNet then Bin and find the ESP with your name, for example abc124567 and copy from there. Hope this helps.
as a backup.....
You need to find the program folder on your computer, the folder should be called ShortHand for Windows. It may be in the c:/Programs files. If you can't find it there, go to your START menu, click on the Search for files or folders and see where it is. Inside the Shorthand for Windows folder is another folder named SH8 or whatever version you are running (mine is version 8). That is the program as well as the dictionaries you have created. To back it up, you need to copy that entire folder to a CD or external drive, or where ever you want to put it. REMEMBER, copying this folder WILL NOT create an install disk, this is only a backup of the program with and dictionaries. To install shortand onto another computer, you have to go to the website and download and install the 30-day trial - but make sure you download the correct version for your license or it will not unlock your program, i.e. mine is SH8 and my license will not unlock version 9 or 10. If you have downloaded the correct version, then you copy the files with the extension of *.SPF (your dictionary files) and the file for your license, which should be SH__.LIC.
Hope this helps.
So you get a backup, like I have
I have several people I can call to fill in for me for vacations, etc. If it is just a day or so, I just catch it up when I return. If you don't know anyone who can back you up, then you advertise in the local paper or here, etc. There is always a Transcriptionist around who would not mind a few extra dollars for vacations, etc. That is the way it has been done for years. I don't see it as a problem at all. I certainly would not NOT take any time off!
Do you have the backup CD that came with
your computer? That is the only way I know how to do what you want to. Your computer should've come with a backup CD that has that registration number on it.
Usually just one with a backup or two..
I like having a backup when things are slow.
All hail System Restore! (sm)
The DSL went out in my complex the other day, and when it was restored, nothing I could do could restore connection on my work computer. The manager brought his laptop over and proved the connection was fine. My tech-savvy daughter and I checked and rechecked everything, then laughed when the Hardware Lord came home and rechecked all the same things we had tried.
Finally she reminded me about System Restore; I restored to the previous day, and all was well.
Don't know about System Restore on Windows XP systems? Go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore and make sure yours is turned on and sufficient memory allocated. In addition to the automatic restore points WinXP schedules, make certain you create a restore point before you change any significant settings on your system or install or uninstall software. Note that it only restores settings, not deleted files or programs.
There are some forms of Spyware which hide out in system restore. The only way to get rid of them is to turn it off and erase all previous restore points.
Thought I'd post this as this feature has saved me a lot of grief on several occasions.
I would try a system restore to before you started...sm
That should clear up any problems you've had since then. You can find it in your control panel, performance and maintenance and then system, where you'll find system restore. Choose a date to before you started work there. Or you can buy the programs out there that fixes problems like this, like Fix-It Ultimate 6. I know they have them at Walmart for $20. Good luck!
My system restore is not working so I cannot do this..nm
nm
If I am right I did not "set up" my system restore...sm
Your system restore as I understand it automatically makes its own restore dates. You can make your own restore dates also. I have not done any set up regarding system restore and have used it several times in the past. Check it out on your pc with any luck you may be able to use it...Good Luck...
do a system restore. see if that helps. nm

I just did a system restore and that seems to have helped. nm

Welcome! System restore is a lifesaver
I have used it many times. I always check for simpler solutions, but if there are none, this does just what it says and at least allows you to rule out certain things.
System restore won't work for this.
The icon on the toolbar is controlled by the normal.dot file and system restore does not affect that file. You can take the icon off the toolbar by holding down on the Alt key and dragging the button down to the document window with your mouse. You can also open the customize dialog box on the tools menu and drag it off that way.
Do you have a system restore option
on your computer where you can set it to how it was working on a past date?
Easy Fix...System Restore
I was able to ditch the XP Antivirus 2009 bug by rebooting, going back into Windows in safe mode, then doing a system restore to a couple of days prior (click Start, Help and Support, type in "system restore" and you'll get the system restore wizard). Pesky bug hit me earlier this week when I decided to work a late-nighter and didn't have the time or stamina for marathon troubleshooting!
I would uninstall SP3 and do a system restore.
I've read that SP3 can be problematic.
