Hi, everyone, and thanks for the good feedback!  I thought I should be as generous as everybody has been to me by sharing the feedback in a summary:

According to the consensus of most replies here is what I am getting:

GOOD - Amphion, MDI-MD (*not MDI-FL), Keystrokes, Silent Type, Phoenix Medcom, QT Medical, Digital Records, SPI, and eTransPlus.

Acusis was mentioned as a good one, BUT when I input "Acusis" into Google to find its site and also saw this one

http://www.acusisindia.com/AIP0302/Home.asp

I had second thoughts about applying.  I have already lost one good account to India, so I don't wish to go through that again.

BAD- Medquist, Ascend, Transolutions, Transcend, Healthscribe, Spheris, KJM Trans., SoftScript, Superior Global, OSI, Zylomed, Medvoice, A to Z, D&L Typing, MedWord, Precyse, MDI-FL (although MDI-MD has had glowing reports).

I can add my own horror story to the Bad List:  Voice Systems in Georgia.  Don't work this account if you ever want to get paid!  I worked for 3 months before I finally saw a penny, and that was only with multiple threats and refusing to type another word until they were caught up.  And they were SO DISORGANIZED that it was a NIGHTMARE!!!  It took weeks of small, incomplete checks for them finally to catch up with me, and the verbal abuse and language I got over the phone, fax, and e-mail were unbelievable!  Very unprofessional!

Thank you to everyone who answered me and gave me encouragement.  I have applied to everybody on the Good List but found out that I still have unsolvable connectivity problems with some of them, like Amphion.  We have high-speed business-grade satellite, but that is not enough in some cases.  And we don't have land lines, either.  We live way out in the boonies.

Still that leaves a few good choices, so I thank all of you!!!

Thanks for all the replies...VERY good advice...NM

Good question. Can't wait to read your replies.:)

I am in a similar situation.  I have no idea what to do either but don't want to turn either one away.  One I have had for 3 months but get paid equivalent to once a month which sent me on my job search in the first place.  Two of the jobs called me back and they both want FT.  One is more flexible and the work is easier but the other seems more reliable and answers e-mails right away.  They both have direct deposit which is huge for me.   The one I have now doesn't.   I am so confused.  Need to make a decision today.  Maybe we should team up?

Let us know how what you decide.  I will be checking back to see how things went.  Good luck.:)

good companies
what makes Proscript so great?
Just curious.
Good companies.
Stay away from Transolutions. They still use the DOS-based program to work in. They mail you 70 POUNDS of books and equipment and just finding a doctor in the books can take a very long time. They pay based on production, which they say gives you an hourly rate. The good paying hourly rates are nearly impossible because of the time it takes using the antequated system. The spell check is horrible, try an 1980s version. They give you more than one account (I had 3) and the QA varies from account to account. Once the regular QA gets done with you (that part wasn't bad), it goes to the head QA lady and she deducts for absolutely everything. They take off 0.25 just for where she feels a comma should be! My QA from her rated me at 88% and I swear to you it was where she didn't want commas and where she did. Absolutely ridiculous. Of course the lower the QA score, the less you make. They spend a tremendous amount of time trying to take from you. If you get a difficult account, which I had, nearly all ESLs, you are screwed because if you take the time to look things up, you lose lines per hour and lose money. If you don't look things up and send to QA, you lose money based on the number of reports you send to them. It's a no-win situation.

Etransplus has wonderful accounts, good pay, and good benefits, but you must be a self starter. There is little to no communication from anybody. You don't get reports back that you send to QA and ask for a sample. You don't hear from your supposed team leader at all, even if you ask a question. You don't get all the account information you need, so you really need to know somebody else who works there who can send stuff to you. If you can tolerate that, the accounts are great, little to no heavy ESLs and a good variety of work and so far no accounts have run low.

Transcription Solutions seemed like a wonderful company with good benefits; however, if you work nights, you still have to train on day shift. Would have liked to have taken this job but couldn't for that reason.

OSI or whatever they go by now, their QA is like Transolutions. Every QA person had their own way and it was not consistent at all.

Precyse has decent benefits and average pay WHEN you can get work. The few accounts they have run awfully low and it's hard to make a living.

CBAY has what sounds like a good salary, but they are based on 65 cpl without spaces.

I'd like to know myself who is out there who has decent pay, good and consistent QA, and a steady workload.

As far as flexible scheduling, Transolutions gives you the option of starting one hour early or one hour late, but that's the extent of that. The others let you set your hours but you have to stick to them ridigly.
PLEASE, somebody, who ARE the good MT companies?

I have 20+ years' experience, and I am looking for a good MT company who will employ me full-time.  We are losing our current job because we just moved and our current hospitals can't work with our satellite connection (which is high-speed, business-grade Direcway).  We are suddenly without jobs and need help fast!

Who are The Good Guys?

Good companies
I think what it amounts to, is there people who like and dislike every company. In reality they all have good things and bad things and good people and bad people. I think lots of your success is based on your attitude. If you are a good MT you will have success wherever you go.

Are there any good companies?
That will hire new grads?  I've been an RN for 6 years and type over 100 wpm, but can't seem to get my foot in the door anywhere.  :(
Good companies for IC

I can recommend two companies - one is Keystrokes - check their feedback on this board, and the other is Global Transcription Network out of Arlington, Texas.  I do not know if GTN has a website.  I worked for them for about 10 years as an IC and enjoyed the flexibility, the pay, as well as the work.  I was given the opportunity to work on many different accounts and learned a great deal while working with them.  Most of the ICs worked on only one or two accounts, but I was pretty new out of school when I went to work with them and was eager to learn all that I could.  Neither of these companies off-shore their work.  Hope this helps.

Need the name of a FEW good companies
I have been reading this message board for a couple of weeks now, in preparation for going back to work as an MT. I have gotten some offers, but I'm scared to death to accept them for fear they are one of the bad companies, and if I do accept one, which one? I'd just like some names of some really upstanding companies for employees. Please help me, if you can.
any good companies????
I am looking for a good company I can stay with and grow.  I have 10+ years experience.
good companies to work for

Hi,

I am a recent M-TEC grad who is beginning the job search. Does anyone have any companies that they really like working for or have heard good things about? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Jen

Good companies to work for.

I have found Spheris to be an excellent company to work for.  They provide you with the equipment and with on-line paid classes to teach you their system.  The supervisors and help personnel are terrific.  You set your hours and can have as much work as you want without ever running out.  They have terrific benefits and fun things to do and an on line info system that teaches you whatever you need to know about medical transcription.  I have been self-employed, and have worked in a clinic for 15+ years and find Spheris to be the best of all.  Good luck in your search!

Good companies to work for
I disagree with Spheris being a good place to work. As a newbie, you should stick with a smaller company. Somewhere where you will get individual attention and not be lost in the shuffle of a huge company. If you are placed on the right team, you might be okay. If you are placed on one of the teams with incompetent managers or supervisors, you are destined for doom. Just my personal opinion.
There are good companies that do not offshore -hopefully will never have to.

What companies are good with newbies?

BTW, what R some good companies 4 radiology pay-wise? nm

MS Word platform--who are the good companies?

I have been applying for and training for jobs for weeks now.  I have been accepted by a number of top companies, but I have found their word Expanders to be a big problem.  I have trained on a couple of sites already and ended up turning them down because of this.

By now I have thousands of entries into MS Word/Smartype, and if I have to start with a new Expander without the ability to import my words, phrases, templates, etc., from Smartype, I just cannot afford the time for the learning curve.

The technical aspect of transcription has always been my weak point, so this is perhaps a bigger issue with me than it would be with others.

Right now I am willing to take even a mediocre line rate, providing it is an employee position with benefits and it is in MS Word so I would have some hope of making a living.

Is there any hope for me?  Does anybody have any good companies to recommend who work in MS Word?

We are at the point of losing our house and land.  This is serious!

Any good companies that will provide a free computer??

Are there any good MT companies out there that will provide a free computer and the software, supplies I will need?? I am a canadian MT living in canada. They also must hire outside the USA. IF anyone knows of such a company (that pays at least 12 cents per line too!!)- please email. Thanks!!!!!

A good MT is hard to find. Check back with those 2 companies

Thanks for all the replies. (sm)
I think I just might give it a try.
Thanks for the replies. I am going to bid on . . .
the CDs.  A note is on the listings that the key passwords are included.  :)  Anyway, thanks.  I think I want them and will do as suggested regarding HPI and other materials.  Our library said they don't have the program and have no plans to get it.  :(
Thank you for your replies.
I think I'll try the frozen peas and see how that works out.  It's not so much that the pain is excruciating, it's just constant and driving me nuts.  I have had problems for years with numb hands and right rotator cuff tear and bursitis, and now my right arm has to ache.  I had an EMG/NCV a few years ago that was normal - which baffled the neurologist since my symptoms had sounded exactly like carpal tunnel to him.  So I have lived 8 years with numb hands and 3 years with excruciating right shoulder pain, and I'm only 31.  The neurologist told me he didn't think it was the typing causing the problem - HUH?  I can't imagine what else it might be.  Anyway, didn't mean to write a novel.  Thank you guys so much.

It seems we applied to the same company and got the same replies. I didn't do anything about testing or replying to the email either.

I then got the same email you did about the position being filled.

Nothing like a form letter!
Thanks so much for all the replies. sm

I am going to see the doctor in 2 weeks for a consult.  I have been kicking the idea around for several years.  One month, it won't be so bad and I think, "I can deal with this."  Then the next few months, I lose at least 2 nights of sleep because of having to get up twice a night to change...stuff, and I think, "Why didn't you call???!!!"  And also scheduling my life around it and constantly counting days on the calendar, not exactly sure when it's going to arrive.  Last year, I got my period in the Atlanta airport on the way to Disney World.  I was crushed!  Also last summer, I knew I was going to get it sometime while at the beach, so got 2 months of birth control pills and took them continuously so I could skip a period, but the pill has a set of symptoms all their own for me!  So, it's definitely time to look into this more closely!

Thanks again!

Thanks for your replies. nm

Thanks to both of you for your replies :-)
I'm going to try out your suggestions and talk with my doctor also. Hopefully it will get better. I appreciate it!
Thank you all for your replies! sm
Thanks for a very interesting discussion. I wasn't looking for permission to make errors! I just wondered if people believed that MT errors are a huge danger to the patient. It seemed to me that common sense would say that there are more safeguards for the patient than a dictated note in the record. We should be very careful to make our work as accurate as possible, especially to avoid the cascade of misinformation that can follow a patient forever, as was pointed out in one of the posts. Thanks again, everyone for taking the time to respond with these excellent posts.
Thank you very much for your replies.

These help a lot! This is second marriages for both, hence why we decided on Vegas...no big wedding, but it has been years since either of us have been there, so we really don't have much to go on. We will be going the second week of June, so no BIG BLAST either, haha.

Thanks again!!
Thanks for the replies!

Thanks for the feedback.  I will just have to find one that has enough space for everything so I am not defeating the purpose of getting one!

          Thanks, again.

Thanks to all the replies!! :-)
Thanks again!
Thank you all so much for your replies. I am definitely
going to give it a try. I figure even if I graduate at 48, I'll still have a good 17 years of work ahead of me.

I always see lots of ads in my local paper for SLPs and after researching the job it is definitely something I would love to do. I do know I will have to go for my Masters as well which means I'll be in college when my kids are in college. Thank goodness student loans are considered *good loans*:)
Thank you all for the replies
I have heard that sometimes hospitals are hard to get money from at first, contract or no.  This is a very small hospital with three doctors dictating, so here's hoping the bill won't get lost between exchanging hands.  Thanks for the well wishes too!
Thanks for the replies.
I'll pass them along.
Thanks for all of the replies...sm

I do really need to see a PCP/psych because I haven't been to a doctor ever since my son was born and that was 4 years ago.  I am lucky now because I have no medical problems and have not had any my entire life but there is a long line of family history of cancer, cardiac problems, lung problems, etc....and not only do I want to trim down to help my self image but also for health concerns.  I want to be here a long time for my son and if I can lose now before something drastically happens then I will be okay.  I feel like there is something sabotaging my weight loss.  I have been buying the right foods, making sure not much bad food is in the house.  I guess it just takes time.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions.  Food is an addiction just like cigarettes, drugs and alcohol.  It is hard to overcome but we can all overcome anything that we really set our mind too and if we have support then that is even better!  Thanks again.

thank you for your replies...

Some of the things said have given me MORE cause for thought.

I did not want to start a school.  I would not expect to make a large amount of money mentoring.

I just can't seem to let go of the idea that there is a large gap between someone graduating from a training program and having the ability to start working, ESPECIALLY at home.

Again, thank you for your time.

Thank you for your replies
I checked out the Mohawk and will try to go with it.

Thank you all who posted!
Thanks for the replies
My BIL was drinking again today, thank goodness my SIL is sending him off, they are on the phone with all the family and getting it done!!! Praise the Lord. Thanks for the replies I know it sounds as if the kids are not taken care of in this but of course I did not give all the details on this board. Some of you may think "yeah right" but I did not give all the details about the kids. They are definately safe and my husband even said at the beginning "if I have to sit on my porch with a shot gun from now on he will not hurt these kids again with his drinking."
Anyways..thanks again for the replies and Prayers are being answered and he will be going to get help very soon!!!
Thanks for the replies
I got a vacuum yesterday, have been doing research via the internet for a few days as well as asking here. Thanks again!!
Thanks for all the replies....

Thank you to all of you for your replies. I really appreciate your insight on different thoughts to consider, and your experiences with children of your own, as well as the suggestions you made about keeping a food diary to track foods to try to find the culprit. It gives me some different thoughts to entertain as I have been driving myself crazy trying to diagnose the problem myself (even though I know this only makes the test result waiting process worse! lol)

Hopefully, it will be no big deal and he will 'outgrow' it soon or maybe even be put on medication to prevent it or something. In any case, I will keep you posted on the results of the abdominal x-rays. Thanks again for your support! :)

Thanks for replies!

thank you for your replies....
I agree with you both.  And yes, I did lose my PTO by going part time.  I don't understand how so many MTs can just hop around from company to company.  This is truly a hard decision with two hard to get into companies.  I guess subconsciously, I am leaning toward sticking with my IC job because that's what I know and am comfortable with.  But, I hate to walk away from the other one which actually pays better.  I forgot to mention the fact that even with working my IC job only, I will still be working full time hours and I have to stick to a schedule somewhat, but nothing like the employee position.  So, is it worth it to work 8 hours without benefits but with the flexibility?  Or do I need to buckle down and go where the money is......sigh.....more replies welcome!
Thanks to all for your replies. I - sm

am going to think long and hard on this this weekend.  Stability is definitely an important thing.  Money can be worked out to be about the same.  Flexibility is definitely important.  The weights are still leaning more towards the flexibility, just not enough!   Thank you all again.

Thanks for both replies
I think I'll give it a shot myself this year.  I was thinking I should do what you say, look at last year's and follow along from the accountant's forms.  Thanks again.  Hey - are you the same Patti going out dancing tomorrow night?  If so - hope you have a blast!
Thank you for your replies

Thanks for all the replies, everyone...

I think I am going to prepare myself to go back to teaching, keeping this job until I have a teaching job.  I could use the additional insurance benefits as well, since my husband's job provides really awful insurance, and I'd love not to have to work when the kids are on breaks.  MT has been a godsend while I was at home with a toddler, but now that the "baby" is in school... This paying later and later is just getting to be too much.  My parents won't be around forever to bail us out!

Again, I really appreciate all the responses.  You all are great!
