Reliable Internet Service? Currently using Earthlink and very unhappy.

I've been using Earthlink as my ISP but this past year the service has gone downhill. I've been without service at least four times this year for anywhere between a few hours to a day. Plus all tech support is out of the country so you spend more time than necessary asking the tech to repeat the instructions. I'm looking at Verizon right now. Comcast is not recommended. Thanks

Reliable Internet Service
I also used Earthlink for a year with problems like yours, switched to Verizon DSL with worse problems, looked into Comcast, also in my area, which was highly recommended. I had to get rid of Verizon as I kept losing service, they actually blamed it on electrical appliances in my house (not true), so I switched to my town's local cable company, have no problems with that. I would try Comcast before Verizon DSL. It is really aggravating when you keep losing internet connections and after many calls they still cannot figure out why. Good luck.
reliable LD service
I am feeling totally frustrated.
I was using Vonage with little problems, but switched back to AT&T Call Vantage 'cause is was $20 less and I was supposed to get a second phone line. Well, never got the second line and I've had problem after problem. The main problem is with the Express Enterprise system that I call into "communicating" with my C-phone. Sometimes the call is disconnected. Sometimes it doesn't "hear" the key pad when I press the numbers (i.e. to sign off on a report). Sometimes it will suddenly rewind to the beginning of a report.
I thought the problem was on my end, so I shelled out $$$ to replace the foot pedal, headset, and C-phone ... nope, that didn't solve the problem. Called AT&T and they said the problem was with the DSL line. Had that tested and was told it was working correctly. Purchased another DSL modem (another $100) and that didn't solve the problem.
Called AT&T for tech support and they said "The C-phone is not supported." Well, gee, it was before!!!
Anyway, you can see why I'm grumping.
Is there *ANY* service out there which won't kill my wallet but won't give me the problems I'm having. Again, Vonage was pretty good, but it still was quirkly, and it cost $65/month. A dial-up service (www.onesuite.com) is terrific (no problems), but it's 2.9 cents per minute, which will be $200-300 per month. Don't want to spend that. And AT&T .... yuk!!!
I'm open to any and all suggestions. What's reliable without breaking the budget?
What is the advantage to having a book over using reliable Internet sources?
and yes I KNOW not to believe everything you google, but there are reliable sources. Why buy a book every year? Not arguing at all, just want to know your rationale. Thanks!
My telephone service is VOIP, but it s through my cable service, along with my cable internet. .
We have had VOIP for about a year now and I love it. I really can't tell a difference in traditional service, except the price. One of the best calls of my life was to Bellsouth to cancel our service!
No, you don't need their internet service, just
some internet service - cable type. I got all the equipment I needed from Vonage. Also their equipment is a Linksys - that's it. You just plug it into your cable modem, and my Vonage Linksys had ports allowing me to network all 6 of my computers at home. Prior to Vonage, I was only able to network 3 off of my cable modem. Its very, very easy to figure out. The only old down side used to be that you could not get all the usual features of 911 in an emergency. You would have to dial 911 and say your address. That has been rectified now in all areas, as far as I know. I also have a cell phone anyway, 24/7, so on the rare occasions that power has gone out, I use my cell phone if need be. I have never been so happy with a phone company - been with Vonage about a year now. I had tried them all, and been burned by all - Verizon, MCI, Sprint. I lasted with Verizon the longest, but again, I paid about $80 a month for their biggest plan - Freedom plan, with all unlimited LD, call waiting, voice mail - every bell and whistle one could get, and the bill always was $50 to $100 or more higher than promised. They would tack on all sorts of garbage every month. Finally got sick of them and switched to Vonage. It was scary at first, but so worth it. Again, when I work, they have a feature where you can set your phone to not even ring - just go to instant voice mail. You get an email that you have a new message, or your phone blinks and lets you know. You can go right in your email and look and see who the # is that called, so you know whether to listen to the message or leave for later. You also can access all your phone stuff thru Vonage.com. You can listen to your voice mail via your work headphones, or you can listen to the messages via your phone. Online, all your calls are saved permanently. I am just so pleased with them, though was very skeptical at first. They even have a new neat thing called a virtual phone or something, and its a screen you can bring up on your computer which is a big phone. You use your mouse to dial the numbers and just talk thru a computer microphone or headset. Its really cool. I don't need it, but it sounds like a fun toy!
Internet service
Was with Time Warner when brought out by ComCast. Internet service through cable fast but unreliable. Have been with AT%T for about a year now, a tad slower, but has NEVER gone down.
Internet service is not down.
They just switched to using a different cable for service and most service will be back up today. Since it happened at the end of their workday yesterday, it hasn't really affected too much.
Is anyone using the new internet phone service through
your local cable company or Vonage or something like that. How do you like it? Any troubles we should be aware of? Thanks for any info.
RE: Is anyone using the new internet phone service through
I have internet services and digital phone service through Time-Warner, and it is great!
Switching internet service
Cox just informed me that my monthly bill will be going up by $5 starting in October. Does anyone use NetZero or can anyone recommend a reliable internet service at a decent rate? My bill will go up to about $45/month.
Can you get Vonage w/out getting internet service? sm
If I can remember correctly, I was once told that you needed their internet service - which I do not need nor want - just want to get rid of my expensive land line.
Thanks!
Question for those who use internet fax service (sm)
I am looking into this and didn't realize how many different companies are out there. Who do you use, and are you happy with the service? Thanks! LLHS
Internet service question
I am going to be moving to an area where high speed broadband and DSL are not available - and the company I work for, as well as most other companies that I have seen on the jobseekers forum require one of these types of internet service - does anyone have any idea of how I can either get around this or of any companies that do not require these - and perhaps can use satellite or some other type where a "receiver" is placed on your roof that picks up a radio transmission. That is the only type service available there. I have heard from one Transcriptionist that said AT&T could perhaps install a "pole" in my yard for around $400 in order to get their DSL and I am going to check on that - but otherwise - I need help with this - and my options are running out. I have been an MT for 15 years and worked at home for most of those years - I cannot imagine doing anything else - but this move is for my husband's business - so I'm stuck as far as where I can move. Any information would be appreciated - either emailed or on this board. thanks

Broadband/Internet Telephone Service
Does anyone use a broadband/internet telephone service for transcription, such as Vonage, Covad, Lingo, SpeakEasy? I have a local long distance account and am looking into this type of service for a monthly flat fee for unlimited minute usage. Otherwise, the long distance fees would eat me alive. Any info on any company, good or bad, would help me tremendously in making my decision. I am researching several via the internet, but once again, any info would help.
Have a save and sane 4th of July!

Searching for Internet satellite service
This company looks they offer good service in our area according to their add but I have never heard of them before. Any news would be appreciated.
Internet service without land-line phone
I recently looked into this subject myself. If you have Verizon available in your area, you can purchase a plan at about $55.00 per month with a two-year contract. You will receive a card that you can insert into your laptop, which will provide you with unlimited Internet access at the speed of DSL. As far as I know, there are no other cell service providers that have come up with this type of card yet, but I'm sure it's bound to happen in the future. Another option is to purchase a satellite telephone and phone cards as you go along, but the cards are really outrageous in price. One last thing that I would suggest is that you phone cell providers in your area to see if they have any technical gadgets you could attach to the cell phone for Internet access. Many of the satellite phone companies have separate packages you can buy, which can be attached to laptops or PDAs. I also have a TracPhone, so I know it does not come with hardware that will do the trick.
Good luck to you in setting everything up. With the way that technology is moving, I'm sure there must be a way to accomplish what you want.
Does anyone know why some companies won't hire you if you have satellite internet service? TIA
x
As long as they have decent internet service there, you should be fine and if you use your laptop no
my laptop because it uses a 9-pin foot pedal and I havent been able to get an adapter that works. Obviously, most all laptops these days have the USB on them. What I have had to do is bubble wrap my computer (I have a small desktop and flat screen) put it in the suitcase and off I go. Also, doublecheck on your time change. I take mine to Hawaii and have to remember there is a 4-hour difference so you'd have to factor that in if someone needed you to do something a certain time. Just check on your internet service before you go etc.. I travel all over with my computer. I cant afford to miss work. Best of both worlds..vacation and work..Nothing is nicer than sitting out on the lanai in Hawaii with that gorgeous view i.e. sunset and working away. I mean I could be home staring at the four walls..boring...
Have had Hughes for 5 years (used to be Direcway) great internet service sm
but truly hate if I have any kind of problem and have to call in. Luckily that is rate to nonexistent.
Norton Internet Security 2009 and Service Pack 2 or 3??
I am having a heck of a time! I have Windows XP and just purchased Norton Internet Security 2009 for my antivirus, as my previous version is just about to expire. Upon installing it it says I have to install Service Pack 2 or higher for it to work. I never installed SP2 because I read that many, many had problems with it. Should I go ahead and download SP3? Is there anything I need to do before installing it? I'm thinking of taking the computer to a professional and having them download SP3 and install it for me because it makes me really nervous! Anyone have any experience with this? What should I do?
Thanks!
Thanks.. we love Vegas..get our rooms free and now you can pay like $10 for 24-hour internet service
Gotta love it.. Have fun on your trips too..
I was told I would dial directly into the system/Will I need to get dial up internet service?
Earthlink and AOL have the most
access numbers. I use Earthlink DSL and I get 20 hours of dial-up every month included. I travel a lot and it comes in handy. I was once in an area that didn't have a local number and used AOL and I had so many problems with it I had to swipe my hard drive. PeoplePC and Netzero I think are just dial-up, though they are supposed to have lots of local numbers.
Some transcription companies will not allow you to have AOL for work purposes, so you might want to check with your company before changing.
You can still use Outlook with other ISPs.
If you use Earthlink for your ISP read this.....
EarthLink to cut 180 customer service workers Work to be outsourced overseas
By BILL HUSTED The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Published on: 07/26/05
About 180 EarthLink employees in Atlanta will lose their jobs as the Internet provider completes a move to outsource customer service and technical support telephone lines.
EarthLink cut 1,300 call center employees in 2003 and another 1,300 in 2004 as it began farming out the work to call centers in India and the Philippines.
The latest cuts eliminate the use of EarthLink employees to handle customer calls, said spokesman Dan Greenfield.
The job cuts will take place between August and September. Greenfield said EarthLink would provide severance pay based on seniority as well as assistance in finding new jobs.
EarthLink will be left with 1,020 employees in Atlanta and 1,800 nationally.
Using overseas call centers instead of American employees saves money, the company said.
When the plan to use outside vendors was first announced, Garry Betty, EarthLink's chief executive, said the company was "making hard decisions that are necessary to ensure the ongoing viability of our company."
On Monday, Greenfield said that the latest cuts were needed "to allow us to compete in a very dynamic marketplace."
The overseas call centers handle both customer service and technical support questions.
Okay, everyone, I do have dial-up and it is with Earthlink, because that is all i can get here in my
They changed my access number and I now cannot stay connected - this causes my MT program to hang up and then I have to restart and it is wasting more time than I have! - But my sister has no problem with the same computer, access number, and provider.
I don't have this program, but I have Earthlink
and they have files for know spam and suspected spam. You can fix it where you don't get ANY e-mails except for people in your address book and then if someone not in your book wants to e-mail you they get an e-mail asking to submit a request. You can approve/disapprove any request. I don't use this option because lots of times worms/viruses will attach themselves to your addy book. I've never had it happen but know lots who have.
I do use suspected spam and so far the past 2 weeks it has caught 1569 spam e-mails, but it has left through probably 150 week. I used to have an unmoderated yahoo group and it would get spam posts so it got blocked, but most of it wasn't spam.
well my earthlink account has this...
nifty spam blocker. I used to have it on yahoo too. And you can block certain addressed so you don't even see them at all. Wouldn't it be lovely if this board had such a feature? She could post away to her heart's content and we wouldn't even have to see them. Ahh, one can dream......
reply to earthlink
Earthlink is a good ISP, and I believe they do offer dsl. if it is available in your area, I would upgrade. I have verizon FIOS (fiber optics) and I could not be happier! it makes cable and regular DSL look like dialup. I can download work in seconds. I downloaded an entire movie in just minutes. I suggest that you make a change. You will be much more productive and happier if you switch
Both Sprint and Earthlink have
"air" cards that allow you to go wireless provided you are in their service area. The service is about $50/mo I think and then you have to buy the card. I think the card is about $200, but they have deals sometimes where if you commit to 1 or 2 years that you get the card for free. You can probably go to the websites of both companies to check to see if you have service in your area.
We also have a service in my area called Clearwire. They have a modem that you plug into an outlet and you can take it and plug it in and get service anywhere within range. They have different levels of service, similar to DSL, where the faster the download the more the $$. I think the cheapest package is $25/mo. They may have the same service under a different name in other areas.
Stay away from Earthlink
I have been having major problems with not getting my e-mails. They just filter and delete as they see fit.
I have had Earthlink for about 8 years
with no problems. The filter based on your settings, which you can change at any time.
My Earthlink is goofy today too. nm

We have decided to add this to our current service not have a new service. It will be easier to sm
keep track of and will just be a different department.
It looks like we will work out details over the next 6 months, talking with community college program directors as well as a few of the distance-learning course leaders to work on the recruiting end.
We will train current staff to mentor if they would like to do so and want to work in the office.
We are still working on production requirements, goals to set, pay, benefits and other fine details but we have 6 months to get it all in place with three months to pull it together after that with a tentative start date of 09/01/06. We need to build the building as well, although that is already at the blueprint stage in a spot next to our current office.
We did not want to cause flames and bashing by listing the company name as there are always so many negative people on this site, but we are national with over 200 transcriptionists, located outside of Chicago (40 miles west) and have the best team of transcriptionists around!
We will have an "official" announcement after the first of the new year.
Thank you for all of your feedback and suggestions!
Who said I was unhappy?
I never said that. The funny thing is, I am extremely happy at Medquist. I am a high producer too. So, don't act like you know anything about me. What I know about you is that you are pathetic and you are coming on here all day and night and harrassing people on this board. It is sickening. So, have you decided who you are going to be tomorrow? Or, isn't this about the time when you start posting things and then answering yourself? ROFLMAO. Can't wait. Everyone, please stay tuned for the show!
Maybe she was just really unhappy with where she was (sm)
Sometimes people just end up in situations where they don't belong and are miserable and have to make a change. I'm sure it's nothing personal against you.
another unhappy MT
I have been sitting here all night trying to find a solution to this very problem, like I have many nights for the last several months. I am considering going to nursing school and giving up MT for good. I have never wanted to do anything but transcribe, have over 20 years experience just like you, but the inhouse hospital jobs are gone, as are the days of getting paid by the gross line, this editing crap is the final straw, I can no longer recommend this profession to anyone. It's really sad that nobody values the experienced MT anymore, the ones who take pride in their work, really sad..........................my income has gone from a net of $1300.00 every 2 weeks to barely more than $300.00! My husband passed away not too long ago and I am on my own now, really scary.
Don't worry -- they are the unhappy ones...
doubt they will ever find satisfaction with their attitudes.
They should be pitied for their woeful disposition.
They are embarassing themselves.
unhappy with mq supes
I know what you mean. I don't need constant contact with my supe, but when my grandmother passed away, my supe didn't say anything about it, no sorry, condolences, or anything!
Oh lighten up, unhappy one
unhappy people
I agree. They could care less. There has to be an end game. Maybe they're getting ready to do the India thing.
I agree. If you are unhappy with your job
for whatever reason (lack of work, jerks in mgmt) leave it and find another company -- there are others. If you don't want to edit, opt out. If you don't like the new plan, quit. Life is too short to waste time worrying about what might be forthcoming on 10/1.
To unhappy MQ oldtimer
Line rates can be deceiving. I make 8.5 cpl now, made 10 cpl for MQ. I'm much better off emotionally, mentally, physically and financially with the 8.5 cpl.
So....unhappy MDI-MTs - any idea where you will
look if it comes down to having to find work somewhere else?
Does husband know how unhappy you are? SM
Men are dense. I'm not kidding. You have to beat them over the head for them to understand. I'm with the woman below who says it will be tough for single mother with two small children.
Encourage him to attend counseling with you. Some people will say it will not work, but, believe or not, most men are scared silly of being alone and will at least try to keep the marriage together. Good luck. I mean it.
some people are just so unhappy,
nm
I am unhappy about it, but those are the rules
No young lady here is happy about it. I'm tired of being called a lier. This was in place for years. My 40-year-old friend had to get one as she never had a license until now. I'm not crazy. I do not need help and I'm sick of being called a lier here. No, this was not in place when I was 16 and getting a perment to drive. As for my daughter being sexually active, she is focused on school and works from home typing phone notes for doctors along side me-- her choice. She will be starting a new job in the summer. She doesn't date and rarely goes out. So no, she has better things to do than screw around wth the opposite sex at this point in her life. Not all teenagers are bed jumpers. I'm not blind. I know some girls are, but she is not. I know her friends, they spend a lot of time together. Sex isn't an issue right now.
No, lots others unhappy here but
have more years than you and I work for lower wages but I am no longer having to provide for kids, etc. My pay now is not for every aspect of my life financially like it used to be. What I would say and have said this, if you don't make enough, if unhappy, things are not changing in this field, pay has gone lower over the years and you need to get more than 1 job to live on or move on.
They can say that, but I have gotten more reliable
information here than from my CSC, so what does that tell you?
I am a reliable IC, but I can say
where the MTSO promises work anywhere from p.r.n. to asking how much can you take on? I understand this business waxes and wanes, but sometimes it is just easier to give one IC one particular dictator to be responsible for and then if more help is needed ask if that IC has the time to help.
Another option is to make sure the IC is aware of how many minutes she/he will be receiving. I have had that happen as well where I thought I was getting say 15 minutes, and then was given 60 minutes. By the way, your higher pay rate is great because most small MTSOs only are willing to pay 7 cpl.
I like to learn accounts sometimes just to offer vacation, illnesses, etc. Please feel free to e-mail me if you are in a bind, and I can provide you with my resume. I have many, many years of experience in a lot of different specialties and am also flexible in regard to volume. I also tend to offer Sundays as an option since my work week runs Sunday to Thursday.
An IC needs to be reliable.
I had an IC who would have situations crop up throughout her day that kept her from doing the work that she accepted. I had to find someone else because she just didn't understand that accepting the work was her committment to doing it. A simple, "I'm not available..." is the correct way to handle the situation than just not doing the work and thinking an excuse would be make everything better.
not new or unhappy. having fun. wrong on all counts.
wouldn't want to be ya.
