If her son swallowed pool water, then it's no more harmful than tap water when the ratio is done the way a pool should be. The only way he could have "swallowed" chlorine is if he actually meant he inhaled the dust, took a bite out of the block, or was directly in the line of fire while the pool was being chlorinated. In a public place, I wouldn't think they'd be doing that with swimmers present, and if you can smell the chlorine while swimming, that means there is a lack of it in the water. I certainly didn't mean for her to poo-poo him, but you'd think if it affected him to the point of danger, he'd have gotten sick long before she posted.

some people think that just because it is packaged and used almost on a daily basis, that it is safe. It is a harsh chemical and it is not surprising to me that it would cause hoarseness when swallowed. Just breathing it, for me, causes lung and breathing problems. He may be extra sensitive to it. Don't poo-poo is just because somebody else says "he is fine". It is a chemical...and if you don't believe me, swallow some yourself and see what happens...duh.

Thank you, everyone, for your opinions about the chlorine. Tate doesn't have a sore throat or cough, just hoarseness, and it is much better today. I think it was, as someone wrote earlier, the fact that he was having fun in the pool and yelling and laughing...louder than he would normally do. But I also agree with the people who wrote how dangerous chlorine can be, and I'm sure we've all been affected to some degree by the negative effects of chlorine in our swimming pools and even in our drinking water. Everyone have a wonderful rest of the weekend! It's very hot and humid here in Illinois. :)
Can chlorine cause loss of voice?
My 11 year old son came home from summer camp today with barely any voice left. He said he accidentally swallowed some chlorine at the pool. Should I call the patient advisory nurse? Is it something to be concerned about, or is it normal?
Bleach works but disintegrates it eventually.

Yup - once every other week, cleans the bathrooms from top to bottom with bleach (sm)
details my hard-wood floor, vacuums my stairs and dusts. Once a month does the tops of the ceiling fans and chandelier in dining room - $62.50/every two weeks. Well worth it! She even dog sits for us when we go away overnight! Nice older lady with excellent wortk ethic.
