Question about QA....sm

I will soon be the equivalent of a "QA person" responsible for editing and "passing down" the mistakes people are making. I'm interested in some more insight, from both MTs and QA personnel, regarding what makes an excellent QA person, what really works, and what definitely doesn't work. The person that does my QA now is awful. She just has no tact and is totally unapproachable. When it comes to QA and providing feedback, what works and what doesn't?
