QA didn't make the rules or change the rule. We have to learn 'em - SM

and re-learn 'em same as you.  We just have to take the heat from MTs when we do our jobs and enforce the rules.

first rule in riding school was: Learn how to fall...
no really. learn to tuck and curl up, and roll if you get bucked or thrown off. never ride alone.

horses sense fear; if you show it, or your voice even has one iota of fear in in, forget it, your horse will take control over YOU and have you doing what he/she wants.

use simple commands with a confident strong voice. show the horse respect and the horse will also respect you.

try bareback; it really gives you a chance to 'bond.' do you own the horse or are you just riding a different horse each time at a stable?

you need a relationship with the animal as well. groom them, show them affection, but NEVER let them have the upper hand.

when I first got my horse she used to throw me all the time. she would even throw her head so far back it would almost hit me. no one would ride her but me, but after a lot of time and patience (think of them as a 2-year-old child) they will come around. they need to trust you...

by all means, you must get right back on, if they do throw you or 'spook.' my sister had an ex-race horse, thoroughbred, who spooked at his own shadow, literally. I never did warm up to him, but he was like a one-person horse...

how lucky you are, I miss riding so much!
Yeah, right. You go change 'em. LOL
:)

I don't change the rules per post.
I've removed the name as we have policies for a reason. If I allow one person to bend the rules, then I have to allow everyone to.

Goldbird
wonder how they can change rules of English...

I mean, English is the language we're using, at least temporarily, right?

Compound modifiers - you mean such as:  second-degree burn or half-normal saline?  How can these be eliminated?

And by eliminating the 's' do you mean that 5-10 WBCs has become 5-10 WBC?

Incompetent team leaders who keep switching rules and make you

It is that "reborn Christian" thing where they go overboard and make new rules LOL

make a change
Girl, something is telling you its time for a change. I wish you all the luck in the world. CHEER UP, you have sisters out here, you are going to be okay and you ARE going to make it just fine.
You're going to have to make a change.

If you can try to work an hour or so earlier or later to get in some lines when her son is sleeping.  I find that if my children/DH are awake I want to be with them, even if just watching TV, so I'm more productive when they are sleeping.  If you think this new account situation is just a temporary thing and in a month or so you won't have to work so much then just have a talk with son and explain the situation and make an effort to spend some quality time with him.   Starting with any new account is takes a while to get productive, but if this new account is too difficult, ask to try another account or change companies.

I gave way too much to my job and not enough to my family, even though I had to work, I wished I could do it all differently.  My son has seen pictures and home videos of me hold him in my lap and reading to him and he can't believe I used to do that.  I allowed my work to take priority.  I can't go back and undue the past, but I've learned from my mistakes and working hard to correct things now.

Thinking of trying to make a change...

I've been working now for nearly a year.  Mostly I have done podiatry and clinic notes.  I'm thinking of making a change to radiology or neuro/phsyc.  Any tips on how to do this?  I know podiatry terms and rarely have to look anything up anymore, but there doesn't seem to be much work out there for the subspecialty.  Any advice would be great.  I've been applying to every ad I see, but no replies yet.

I know a lot of new MTs go into acute care, but I'm finding I am far more productive working with one specialty rather than acute care or clinic notes.

Any advice?  Thanks.

Oh, working in-office isn't an option because of where I live.

Love 'em or leave 'em
I don't have a real solution, but I have been known to log off of that account whenever I see this happen.  I then try to find work on one of the other accounts to which I am assigned, but there is often no other work available.  I conclude that the only choice is love 'em or leave 'em.  A private client might be nice, but that brings other headaches.
If U can't beat 'em join 'em
This is NOT the only industry that outsources and you are fooling yourselves if you think that it will stop.
Do it! Make the change! I've mentored a few AHP newbies &

As an SE, all taxes are taken out, but I am wondering if that is reason enough to make a change? sm
Company "A" is my first job being an IC and I am not sure I can wrap my head around why any employer cannot take out taxes which is not the case with many companies which offer you IC status. They tell us how and when to work. This IC job I have right now is no different than any job I have ever had with a hospital, but I think it is a rip off having to pay self-employment taxes. BTW, Company A is in the same state in which I live, so wouldn't be difficult to take taxes out of my check.
Do you LPN's on-call make around $50-60 an hour?!! Nice chunk of change! nm

I didn't want to make anyone sad! Like I said, sm
It is not everyday that I can do this. I have bad days too! I am fortunate right now, but I also remember, good things don't always last forever. I will take advantage of it while I have it.
She didn't MAKE anything SOUND like anything.

Your perception is warped.  YOU chose to interpret it in a different way than she intended.  That's your comprehension level, not her playing cards.  My goodness!  It must be lonely up there on your pedestal telling everyone how perfect you are.  Oh, you never made a mistake.  You made all the "right" decisions.  Blah, blah, blah.  You must be really unhappy and bitter if that's all you can do is tell everyone how great you and your life are.  What's the matter?  Husband cheating on you?  Erectile dysfunction?  Evidently, something is terribly wrong in your life, or you wouldn't be here preaching and condemning other people.  You would be out living your perfect life with your perfect husband and lack of kids.

Personally, I'm sick and tired of your crap showing up on these boards all the time.  I don't care if I get banned for telling it like it is.  It's worth it to not have to listen to you.  If we parents and single mothers bother you so much, why don't you find the dried up, bitter, old crone boards to hang out on?

and, i didn't make THAT much money nm
nm
Sorry, that didn't make sense! I mean
I put yo in the abreviated and replace with year-old. So then when I type 15-yo, it replaces yo with year-old and is perfect!
What didn't make sense to me is the first
woman was shaking in fear, yet this bomb is supposed to be so delicate that anything will set it off. You see her arm shaking. Then she pulls her hand out, and what? the other woman happened to put her hand in there and is now clasping the bomb! and shaking.

I didn't last til the end. It just disgusted me too much. Kudos to you for hanging in there. It's good when you've got a show you really like and look forward to every week, so if that's yours, more power to ya! :)
If he didn't tell her to make the macros
?????  I think this is just someone trying to "get back at a doctor".  I don't see the harm in giving them to him with a line rate charge.  But maybe I just live by karma and not using "revenge" tactics.  I believe if you are giving, then you will receive.  I am not saying offer them for free. I think I would charge a line rate just for going through the trouble of printing them.  I do believe that when a doctor dictates normals, they do belong to him and not the transcriptionist.  The Transcriptionist transcribes them.  He/she is not the "author".  It happens every day when work is outsourced.  The samples are handed right over to the outsourcing company with no charge.  The hospital/physician does not charge the outsource company for handing over the samples.  What if everytime we needed a sample to guide us, we were charged for that?  It is the same argument here.  The company I work for gladly hands over samples/templates to make my job easier, and they do not charge me for that.  JMO.  Maybe I'm just a realist.  I say be a better person and give the man the macros with a line charge assessed if that makes it more fair.  Is anyone seeing my point here?  There is something underlying in the "don't give them your macros", and I just think it is more like a way to get revenge because of the hurt feelings in the way that he may not need the typist once these are given.  I'm sure he's not looking for "the patient, follow-up, etc.".  He probably wants "normal" paragraphs that he has dictated as part of a report.  The typist is not the author of that, the doctor is.  JMO.
Didn't make much money. Worth it to go on?

I'm thinking of getting back into MT again after doing something else for 5 years.  I'm just afraid it's going to turn out like last time and seem like the money wasn't worth it.  I worked for a national for 30 hours a week and my take home pay averaged $800 for a month.  This was based on getting only 6 cpl back then.

Is anybody else coming in this low?  Did I pick the wrong company?  I could only average 125 lph.   I don't want to make the same mistake.  It just seems like luck of the draw as to what company to try to go with, especially with the IC vs. employee status.  I was an employee before.

I'd like some honest feedback of what is considered "low" income.  I know it varies a lot based on many factors!!!

I didn't post that but if I had to make a guess...

I would guess the poster meant that newbies always feel they have a high accuracy.

Don't be offended....if that is what was meant.

Ask your QA or supervisor where you stand.  At least you care !!!

Didn't make me cry but wasn't a breeze.
I studied when I could. After 30 years I think you'll pass.  Please let us know how you do and good luck!
I didn't make the statement that PCs can be bought in bulk
cheap to justify stealing.  I don't believe in stealing.  My mother actually trained me right.  I was just responding to the fact that the original poster thought PCs were so expensive, and she made it sound as if every MT was nothing more than a thief.  Sorry, but if I can buy a new PC with a printer for $349, imagine what a huge corporation can get 1,000 of those computers for.  They get price breaks.  And no, it does not justify stealing.  I think anyone who steals is pathetic.  Nobody has the right to take anyone else's belongings.  By the same token, I don't believe there are that many MTs stealing brand new computers and getting away with it.  I certainly never stole anything from an employer.
So glad I didn't bust my a^^ to make the 10,000 lines!!!!!!!!!

their employees ANYTHING?

junk for their ungawdly profits.

Yes, but didn't your line count double to make up for it? SM
I love EditScript. My only problem is that--reportedly--the profit margin for the MTSO can be very low, encouraging them to send it offshore. Does anyone else have information on this?
If MTs didn't make mistakes or leave blanks,
-
Cherrypicking didn't make our line rates less -
the lower line rates are what started people c-pickingin the first place, so they could make enough each week to live on. Back when I was paid by the hour (and lots more than I'm getting now per hour, I did whatever came along. But I'm sorry, I'm not gonna GIVE an employer a chunk of my change for the 'privilege' of doing a 40-minute report by a gum-chewing ESL with static on the line, partying nurses, or crying babies in the background, that I just plain can't understand, when I have the option to choose something that is at least transcribe-able.
No offense, but your post didn't make any sense whatsoever.
Maybe you didn't explain it right, but I read and re-read and don't understand a thing you just said.
Two of the best companies I've worked for didn't make me test. Makes you wonder if...sm
these MTSOs that mandate so many "tests" aren't just trying to see how many actual reports they can get transcribed for free. I could understand maybe a written test and one very in-depth transcription test, but 6 is utterly ridiculous. I would have definitely passed on that too and then told the MTSO exactly why.
I'm sorry I didn’t make myself clear. As an employee I can only work 40 hours per week (sm)
Overtime has to be approved by manager. I have always been an SE and could work as many hours as I wanted to, such as when I had a day of bad dictators I could work until I got my daily line count. Just wondering if all states had this law. I am working in CA.
Even 4.5 is too low. doctors do not change - they still hem and haw, change, change stuff along wit
It is just not enough for the work. Speech is great on the wrists but you are not just reading what is typed, you are making a lot of changes. I have a hard time doubling a lot of days with all the changes I have to make. Just my opinion.
Don't change. I had to change back to cable. SuddenLink DSL stinks! nm

Change provider vs change to business plan

In your place, I would seriously consider changing providers if there were others available in your area, but I'd ask around about their service quality first.  It may not be any better.  If there are no other providers, then consider changing your service package to a business account rather than residential.  They're usually more expensive, but they also tend to get faster service if there's a problem.

Last summer, I had no electricity for 3 days due to severe storms, but there were some 600,000 in the same boat with me.  We just had to wait it out.  It's a downside of working at home.

change attitude, change life
The first thing you need to change is that defeatist attitude! I know that's hard at times like this, but that's when you need to most.
I won't go into detail, but my financial situation is also at an all-time low, we couldn't even exchange gifts., daughter in hospital twice, & no med insurance)..but then I heard about how much worse things were for others around me this season. Now I'm thankful instead!
Isn't that what causes 'em to sag?

You RULE!
What a win-win situation!

I wish the animal shelters took better care of our pets (since they are a part of the government and all). I don't know why those shelters smell so bad; the shelter in my county stinks so bad that you are constantly aware of it. Taking care of displaced or hurt animals should be a big part of their job, and they could take measures to ensure the animals don't get sick. I understand all about their being overworked, but then someone should report to the higher ups what is needed, and then there should be no problem meeting those needs.

In a neighboring county where I live, the public went toe-to-toe with the director over the animal division; demanding answers about the operations and procedures. (That director said he needed a new building, but the public thought the changes should be made in their operations and procedures.

When I want a dog, I always adopt (so far over the years I've adopted 2 beagles).

Nice post!

First rule of being an MT

That's what I was taught.  Everyone is in the same boat and has to take the bad with the good.  Refusing to do the hard stuff makes it worse for the other MTs on that account, and they will not appreciate it.  Until the problem doctors go poof and disappear, nobody has the right to say they can shove all the bad jobs onto the next MT because THEY are here to make money (everyone is, and someone has to type it).  And there is such a thing as Karma - one day you might log on to find ALL the work is the dictator you dread, because all the MTs that came on before you felt entitled to leave the crap work for YOU.  You really won't make any money on that shift, as opposed to doing a few bad jobs each shift.  So type them as you get them, like the rest of us.

If everyone got together and went to management about the problem guy, that's one thing (and yes, we all feel this way about at least one doctor).  Deciding you don't have to do it because you don't want to is quite another, and often grounds for disciplinary action.  Work is often just that, hard work, and with time and practice it becomes easier.  Nobody promised you a rose garden, challenges are what this job entails.

MY first rule, before being MT. is I have to
x
The first rule of being self-employed is that

you set your own line rate.  However, we all know that NONE of the MTSOs hiring IC MTs allow us to set our own rate.  They "offer" a rate, and we accept if it's OK.

I worked for a real cheapo doctor when I first started out.  He paid hourly and kept riding my backside to type faster because he only wanted to pay for the actual time dictated instead of the time it took to transcribe.  More than once I told him that it takes an average of 3:1 typing to talking ratio to get it done.  It worked out to be $.03 per line.  I dropped him like a bad habit.  He bounced through a few other transcriptionists who all quit on him before he wound up having to pay to outsource to a service.
