QA Pay Preference -- hourly versus per line? SM

I've been offered two QA jobs; one that pays $15 per hour and one that pays 4 cpl.  I'm told that I can make more than $15 per hour on production because you get credit for all lines in a report, even if you make only one correction.  So I figured that to make the equivalent of $15 per hour, I would have to QA 3000 lines a day.  So here's my question, is 3000 lines of QA in an 8 hour day feasible and is it possible to do more lines than that in an 8 hour day?


Both offer employee status, benefits, etc.  Benefit plans are pretty much exactly the same down to the same health insurance company.

I am checking into other options for transcription.  Can anyone tell me how to compare all of these types of lines & also payment per word?  I know companies use different scales, so I wondered how they compare.  I have been paid on a 65 character line with spaces, but I may be making a change in the future - don't want to get burned.

Hourly pay versus production pay
Are there any of you who made the transition from an hourly paying job to a production-based job?  If so, how did it turn out for you?
Gross line versus character line....Sm please

I am thinking of taking a job that pays by the gross line and not a 65-character line.  I have never worked this way.  Does this literally mean if there is one little word on a line you get paid for it?  I have not pinned her down on a line rate but I am just thinking I am going to be comparing apples to oranges and am wondering how to accomplish that.

HOURLY VS LINE

I disagree with the hourly rate.  I like to know that I get paid for the amount that I produce.  It would really be hard to regulate an hourly scale.  If you feel bad now how would you feel knowing that someone is goofing off or typing slower or whatever and getting the same rate of pay that you get?   I have a couple of subs and I know about how long it takes to do one of the psych reports but how could I know what that person is doing.   I really think that the hospitals/accounts would have a problem with this especially with us working at home.    Also how could we clock in and out at an hourly rate.  I am a pretty trusting person and trustworthy but there are times I stop and take a break and go to this board, etc.  That is why they went to the per line charge. 


And yes, I can do 2500 lines per day. For one account last month I had them keep track of the errors that they found and it was 5 out of 10,.973 lines for that month.  So I feel I do a good job but if I were to go to hourly I would lose money as with this account it takes me about 30 to 35 hours a month with delivery, printing, etc. to make $1100  to 1200 a month.   They would not pay me $35 to 40 an hour. 


 


Hourly or Per Line?
I personally would be willing to go back to an hourly rate and be a company employee again. I know I will never make the $22/hour I made in the 1980s. However, my daughter is a receptionist in a surgeon's office and she makes over $18/hour. I would like to believe that we would make at least an hourly wage comparable to that.

I know I would be willing to settle for $15 to $18 an hour if I was on the company payroll and getting benefits as the OP is.

Wonder if the local physicians think they are getting ripped off by the per line rate and would consider switching to an hourly employee on their payroll? I would like to think that. These are just some of my thoughts on the subject.
Hourly vs. per line
Hourly pay is better if you can get it, because you never know what kind of transcript you'll run into or number of corrections you have to do. OTOH, even though I am paid hourly to do QA I tell myself my "base rate" is 3-4 cpl and I monitor the number of lines per hour I average, just to keep myself on track and keep myself from wasting my and my employer's time on wild goose chases (I tend to be highly obsessive about finding obscure terms, and the Internet has no end!).

I would never accept less than 3 cpl for QA or editing, and would certainly try to secure more than that. JMO.
Nothing. Never take line rate for editing. Take hourly only.
You will never make any money by the line editing if you are doing true editing.
line versus report sm
There is just no way of knowing until you're there.  It's crazy.  I used to work for a company that paid by report, but they were all MRIs and specials.  Then I worked at Spheris for a few months being paid by the line and could never get my line count because #1 the platform sucked (copy and paste.. it took longer to save a report than to type it) and #2 I was getting a lot of short reports.  A lot of companies pay by the line on certain accounts and by the report for others. So you just have to try it.  If it's not working out for you after a month or so, it's time to look elsewhere.

Does anyone know how to compare a per-page rate versus a per 65-character incl. spaces rate?

I have never been paid by the line before, and I was wondering before I go any further, what would be the minimum requirement of lines per day for most services?  I want to be full time and have benefits.

Before you get too excited, most hourly QA jobs have a line count quota too.
so if you had trouble getting quota as an MT, it could be that you might not make it as a QA either.
I like what I have...Hourly PLUS incentive after a very easy to reach minimum line count.

You're expected quota depends on whether you are paid hourly or per line. SM

I'm paid hourly and I was told the requirement was 50 or more reports per day.  I've never worked QA per line, but I'm sure their line quota is pretty high, at least 2000 or better per day, as you get credit for every line in every report you QA.

Line rates gross versus 65-character

I recently had a call for family practice dictation and I offered 12 cents per line.  Have always charged by the gross line and was charging 14 cents, which I thought was too high, so lowered it to 12 cents.  However, the more I am reading I see that 65 character seems to be the way everything is getting billed.  I also realize at 12 cents per line I lose a lot going to 65 character lines. 


I also realize with family practice that they might have a lot of times where there is one or two words on a line and probably wouldn't be too happy about paying for gross lines. 


I guess I'm looking for advice on charging.  Is charging for gross lines unheard of anymore? I have already quoted the 12 cents, so that will have to be my charge.  But as far as gross or 65 character, I haven't been asked that yet but would need to have that absolutely straight with them before starting.  Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.  I know I'm a little behind the times and am trying to catch up and stay competitive also.

You don't get paid an hourly rate you get paid by line - sm
so because of how you are paid (not an hourly rate) you don't get OT, especially if you are an IC.
A lot of this is the vet's preference -
My current vet will do as young as 10 weeks if the animal is large enough. They also use laser there, which really speeds recovery in the females. I had my last female done at 4 months when she went into heat! The surgery is much easier when they are younger too. The little ones bounce back within a day. Good luck to you.

because I absolutely love it.  Been using it for over 3yrs.  Very easy to query the fields to change to correct DOS or patient if need be, upload statuses to use if info is not available.  I am so sorry you detest this platform...I absolutely love it.  As far as the ESP expander, adore it too.  Sure, I had to add everything from scratch but once you get through the major bulk of it, adding ones here and there over time is a piece of cake.  I even have complete reports including headers set up in my ESP files.  Some Expander programs will not allow that.  In answer to your question, no I have never used SmartType (sp?)...but I have no complaints with what I have now.  Guess it's all what you're used to and what you like your expander to be able to do.

Personal preference
I am a former nurse as well and I promise you that the CMT exam is not a speck compared to boards .. something I think I may still be traumatized by and it was way too long for me to feel that way!!  You are going to get a lot of negative feedback here and I can only tell you that as a nurse with really good experience and an MSN there was no real reason for me to take the CMT exam save for personal validation.  I think that if you work in a field and there is a credential then it is a personal choice whether or not you take the exam.  Many companies do pay for your CMT and will pay as well for you to do the continuing education to maintain it.  Additionally, promotions and the like are often given to CMTs first and I'd say mainly because it shows an employer you cared enough personally to validate yourself.  I don't need someone to force me .. it was driven by my own personal goals in this business.  I'd like to see people stop bashing AAMT because of issues that were not put into play because of AAMT but because of politics and big business squeezing for the buck.  I'd like to see people give each other encouragement and support, but women seem not to be able to do that easily.  I'd like to see this business shake itself off and start to live up to principles that make some sense too .. but I fear that my bubble has burst and still life goes on and we need to make a paycheck.  If you think you will benefit from taking the exam (if only personally) then just do it.
Headphone preference
I'm looking to purchase some new headphones and am not sure which ones to get.    Does anyone have a pair they really love??  Or really hate??  Do you prefer regular ones or noise cancelling??  Thanks!!!! 
Just a personal preference
I am not the original poster but some people just prefer to do certain types of transcription and it has nothing to do w/ being scared. For me, I prefer clinic notes b/c they are a lot more repetetive and so I find I get more lines with them.

I think that is probably client preference. I have
worked for different facilities and have seen them called both. I was taught that if a procedure does not involve actual incisions it is a procedure and if there is an incision it is an operation. But like I said, it is whatever the particular client wants.
coffee preference
I found Folgers Black Silk a nicer, richer flavor with using lesser amount.  husband is happy still (he drank coffee-flavored mud for years).  I would reduce the amount I put in the pot a little at a time until I reduced 4 spoons of grounds to 4 cups of coffee (small pot) down to 2 spoons of grounds.  He used to call it "sissy coffee" but he says it does taste better when I make the coffee.  Go figure... 
Actually, throw out the BOS and use the physician's preference.
I learned that disc is eyes, disk is computer disk, and disc/disk for back is up to the account preferences.  The doctors do not care what some stupid AAMT BOS book says because it's THEIR notes and they aren't regulated by the AAMT.

My cousin and 3 of her friends are stuck there. If he gave preferential treatment. THEY WOULD BE HOME instead of US worrying about them and not hearing ANYTHING from them.

By the way. They also called ahead before they left here Friday and asked their hotel if it was safe or should they cancel and rebook later. They were told to come on. They would be safe, this was nothing to worry about.

I have read that OTHER tourists were told the same thing when THEY called ahead before the hurricane to see if they should cancel and reschedule.

Get off your high horse and DONT comment on things you know NOTHING ABOUT!
Preference is split in my house
My idea of an Easter dinner is ham, mashed potatoes, and a veggie. However, my husband enjoys leg of lamb - YUCK!

I usually make him and the kids a leg of lamb and I make myself a ham steak.

I love Easter dinner. It is usually just my own family here at home - no going away and nobody comes over, unless it is just to visit.

I single or double as requested or to conform to a standard mode, even if I do prefer double for readability. The VR accounts I work on are set to single space. FWIW, typing single spaces is faster.

It seems to me I had to change a preference on Shorthand to prevent that...

but it's been so long ago I can't remember...I think it had something to do about the playback speed. You should mess around with it.


To change Operation Preferences


Choosing "Preferences" from the File menu brings up the Preferences Dialog Box.  Click on the Operation tab to access Operation Preferences.


Pause


Use this option to add a delay (in milliseconds; 1000 msec = 1 second) after a specified number of keystrokes.  This option is useful if you find that ShortHand is playing back text too fast for the target application to handle.



Verify Target Window Receives Keystroke


When this option is checked, Shorthand waits for a keystroke to be properly received by the target window before playing back the next keystroke; this prevents Shorthand from accidentally overrwriting text in another window.  The disadvantage is that, on some systems, this could result in very poor playback performance.  Unchecking this box causes Shorthand to playback Keystrokes at maximum speed without verifying if the keystrokes reach their intended target.  If you experience lost or transposed keystrokes, use the Pause option above to slow down Shorthand.


Question versus gross lines versus 65-character lines....

I have always charged or been paid by 65 or 60 character lines or per letter or space typed, but have never been paid or charged per gross line.


What is the advantage of this?  If I were to charge 11 cents per 65-character line including spaces, what does this figure out to for an average line rate and how do you do this calculation? 


I'm wondering if it is financially beneficial for me to bill by gross line or to keep it the way I have it.  I do know some accounts will only pay per 65-character line, as this was the deal my first own account I recently acquired.  They were adamant on a 65-character line, but didn't specify with or without spaces and I personally would never not charge for spaces.

A gross line is anything on a line is a line. A line set at 65 characters means it sm
has 1-inch margins on each side. The maximum number of characters on that line would be 65 and that includes spaces. If there is 1 character on that line it is a line.

A standard 65-character line usually consists of 65 characters with spaces unless, of course, the employer does not pay for spaces and then it would be 65-characters without spaces.

You can get an idea in the difference using documents you have already created, assuming you're working in Word. Simply open a document and check the properties. Click on the statistics tab and you will see the number of lines as well as characters with and without spaces. If you're currently getting paid by the line and a line is 65-characters with spaces, do the math and see how that number of lines compares with the number of lines in your stats.


One thing to keep in mind: if you have a blank line between paragraphs, instead of hitting the enter key twice, format your document to give the appearance of blank lines between paragraphs.

Hourly plus

A hospital where I worked long ago (in a galaxy not far away) had a hybrid pay system- a basic hourly rate plus incentive bonus for production over a certain amount.  I think this is the fairest way, because sometimes I'm fast and sometimes I'm slow, but I'm always accurate.  My first transcription supervisor back in the dark ages said "No one who reads that report will know or care how many lines you type per hour.  They only know what that report looks like".  I still believe that.
