I have had 2 people working for me for almost 5 years and have to repeatedly check over their work. Should I get rid of them or is this is the norm.

I have to read over each report that they send me because of careless errors like putting the month of June on the notes instead of July. Of course, blanks are always going to happen from time to time, I realize that. I am referring to the careless things that happen with the incorrect spelling of medications, etc. Why I still pay keep them I guess is because I am too nice, but it is wearing off very, very quickly.

Yes I do give them very good feedback and every time these errors appear I am in contact with them all the time. This is an easy account with clear dictators and it is the same account they have worked on for some years so it is just time to do something. I have tried being patient, correcting, but I will do the next best thing and alert them that they are on probation; if they don't straighten out then I will either start deducting for these careless errors or lay them off.

Interesting post. I thought it was just me, after MTing so many years. First of all, i was told 30+ years ago to try and sit off-center from the keyboard and see if it helped my accuracy -- it worked wonders!! I tend to sit a tad to the right of it and angle the right upper corner of the keyboard up a bit too. I find i have less arm fatigue and less strain on my carpal-tunnel-feeling nerves to be closer to the board. Sometimes i even put the keyboard in my lap -- and it really does seem to help the comfort alot, just a bit of a bother to situate my keyboard when i get up and down from the desk tho. I also find, contrary to smart-people thoughts, that i do better with my keyboard low enough that my arms are not at right angles to it. we MTs are a bit finicky eh?
OMG! Pulling my hair out here! Venting...
I have an ESL who speaks very fast, but when I slow him down, he sounds like a very drunk ESL. He tends to speak rather softly until the last 3 or 4 words of his dicatation, when he actually speaks into whatever he dictates into and I can hear those few words very well. This guy has been a pebble in my shoe for far too long!

what a joke. you think you are superior but when i make $25-30 an hour with no sweat, no problem, no hollering, no pulling my hair out, and you are left hollering with BP in the too high digits, who is dumb? bwwwaaaaaahaaaaaaaa

Laser Hair Removal (for dark hair)
I've tried Epilators (basically an electronic tweezer) and wax, but nothing beats Laser HR. It's a bit pricy and takes a few treatments to be 100% effective, but definitely works.

It can't be fair to her that she does not know why you're treating HER like this. She's done nothing wrong. You need to tell her how you feel but point it to the fact that for your emotional health and safety you can't be in situations with your stepfather. Talk to her about keeping close to her without him and if she's doesn't want that, then you'll not be seeing her for awhile. I don't believe your mother is not strong enough to know the truth and it could possibly kick you in the pants in the end. It certainly may feel like a "darned if you don't, darned if you do" situation, but why make your mother feel that she's done something wrong, point that finger where it needs to be pointed, you're uncomfortable with him.
I say that about her being strong enough, but in an entirely different situation where my dad kept secrets about my brother, after my dad died my mom found out about these secrets which my dad felt she was not strong enough to handle, and it caused great harm to the relationship between my mom and myself. I can only hope that one day she can get over the deception that she feels we all pulled on her, even though it was at my dad's request because of her health. I truly wish I had told her a long time ago to save myself the mess that I deal with now by myself because my dad's not here to take the blame for us keeping secrets from my mom.
Why distance yourself from your mom without it being for the truth? Is it really not that important? You'll have to decide. My best to you and yours.

If US MD's were pulling stuff back into US pay would be going up. It's going down.
because of offshoring and because of other replacements for MT (VR and EMR), pay is going down. Face it. There are cheaper alternatives for US MTs. The quality is not as good, but it is good enough. Yea, yea, yea "lawsuits, bla, bla, bla." Nice theory but ain't happening.
My MTSO recommends not pulling up more SM
than 3 documents. For reports in storage, I found that's about half a minute or less total to pull up 3 of them individually, scan, and move on. Google searches somewhat more but not more than a couple minutes at most to find an answer or realize it's hidden and move on. The point in this case being that they want a conscientious effort made to produce high-quality documents with few blanks but haven't found it cost effective for us to spend more than a minute or two on filling a blank.
Timing an actual minute while you to a search is revealing; it's actually a pretty long time that you could be using to churn out...what? 160+ lines with the help of your expander?

to know the right thing to do. So many companies are unfair to their MT's, but is it right to dish it right back to them?
I would say it depends on how they treat you. If they are great to work for then be fair to them. If they are awful to work for then, well, use your best judgment.
If you do lower your rate just be sure that they understand this is your rate for THIS account of mostly macros. If they want you to do an account with straight typing they need to readjust.
Good for you for having high values in an industry that is getting more and more amoral every day :-)
Not difficult for you maybe
But obviously she wouldn't have posted if she didn't have feelings of uncertainty about it. I know when I have had to make a decision about something being right or wrong I find it difficult. You have a clear opinion on this, she didn't. I was just trying to be supportive. I WAS NOT making a blanket statement that it is difficult to treat a bad company badly, or playing the SAME GAME that your company is playing. Geez!!!!

it is also extremely depressing, or at least it was for me. I used to work for M. D. Anderson years ago and did a lot of Peds. Also, the protocols change faster than you can keep up with them so expect to spend a lot of time searching but internet would probably make it easier. Good luck and I hope you like it...somebody has to do it but not this body anymore.

I would encourage you taking the course, but then try working in a doctor's office, clinic or private duty. Most definitely, not in a hospital.
I remember loving the course, but hating it when I got out into the real world.

It is very difficult for me too sometimes. So many tragedies.
It seems life is often so tough. My views and understanding of where and why we came from have been changing over the last few years, and I am having a very rough time trying to make some sense of it.

Just be careful about mentioning Wal Mart. It has kind of been a bad word lately on the boards. I do not shop there a lot because my husband is a firefighter in the union but I do not blame people for shopping there because we do have to eat.

Worked in advertising for over 8 years as a commercial producer, and it (my hair) had started falling out!! Got burned out fast! Also, this field was more conducive to raising children - no travel and I was home for them!

I got a wild hair last week and went and had my hair cut really super shirt in a chic style, so hair blowing in my face won't be a problem. I am so psyched and ready to go buy the convertible. Hopefully by Monday, I'll have it! :)

I paid 24.99 the other day + a $5 tip at Fantastic Sams - shampoo/haircut/style. That was last week. The cut was terrible, so I asked for a redo by another stylist - she did a great job - so I gave her a $5 tip - so in all - that would be $34.99. I always go to the beauty college to have my hair highlighted - $30 bucks - $13 for a machine facial and $15 for a back treatment - both better than a massage - being cocooned up in those warm blankets. Great.

I don't know if any particular field is more difficult
than the next, if all you do is type one speciality. I think ER and Psych are mentally hard because with ER a lot of the patients die and it is depressing and then psych is depressing because of the severe dysfunction of the patients and/or their families. Oncology can be depressing too cause outcomes are not always great and like the previous poster said frequent new meds.
I used to transcribe for a teaching hospital connected to a medical school and that dictation was very hard, much more technical than your normal hospital, lots more dictators too and a new crop every July.
It's difficult but necessary to be in control
Otherwise you are simply allowing little Hitlers to grow up and become *adults* - your job is not to be their friend, your job is to be their parent.
Why would you allow your kids to have friends that you wouldn't allow in your house if they were your friends?
Why would you allow filthy language, out-of-control behavior, and downright liars even on your property?

It is so difficult for MTs these days
With voice recognition, hospital cut backs, and companies overseas. I have been doing this 30+ years and have enjoyed it up until now. I can so relate with you. I have been looking at a company SilentType? Any input on them or any others who do not consider you an IC, I don't mind paying my own cable or DSL as I have that for home anyway.
It is difficult, I won't deny that.
I stretch quite often.
I take breaks, too, or I couldn't do it at all.
I won't be doing this more than about 2 years so I can hold out.
I'm not kidding though, I have to work hard and I'm not bouncing around like Tigger at the end of the day. I'm tired and sometimes sore. I can't make this kind of money from the comfort of my home anywhere else though!
Was very difficult to learn and there are
still some things I cannot get the hang of. But, it is the only Expander I am permitted to use so had to bite the bullet after resisting for a few months. Takes about three months go use it effectively. Try using it for a few hours every day. When you get frustrated, close it and type everything out. On short-fuse days, skip it altogether. Over a few months, with this method, you will begin to develop speed and each new problem will be solved one by one so your line count will not get suffer greatly. Using IT requires doing a massive amount of reading initially. But, I have to say, I love it now (and am still learning how to use it six months into using it).
Difficult to remember
I also have struggled with that. I have been trying to think of a creative way to remember, but I keep coming up empty. If you think of someway to keep it straight in your mind let me know.

Especially considering that Brad PItt - famous movie star - had the world by the family jewels with a beautiful wife, Jennifer - multimillion dollar mansions and $$$$ coming out the ying yang, yet he up and left it all to be with a woman who's a lesbian, Angelina Jolie, PLUS he adopted her two orphan children to boot, as well as knocked her up.
Now .... who do you think has more power over Brad - his mother or Angelina? Think about it, not that it needs a lot of contemplation...Angelina can do things for Brad his mother never can, if ya' know what I mean, which is why I told the original poster to LET IT GO because she's FIGHTING A LOSING BATTLE SHE CANNOT EVER WIN.
Radiology is not that difficult ...
it does take some extra study of anatomy, and a good radiology word book, and there are websites where you can learn a lot about radiology. I do both acute care and radiology, and I like both.
