I did this will all of my children. I would go to Wal-Mart or the Dollar Store and buy a lot of little cheap toys and trinkets and put them in a pillowcase. Everytime he or she went to the bathroom they could reach in and pick out a prize. They went every time and after less than a week were potty-trained and when the bag was empty that was it. This last year when I trained another one the lady at the check out asked my why I had so many toys and I told her what I was doing and she said "that is an expensive way to do it", but really $15 for a bunch of toys is the same price as a week of diapers and after that week I don't need the diapers anymore. Anyhow, I know it is bribing, but it works and you can't beat that!

most children achieve this at their own pace, but I have a few ideas that helped with my son. I made a game of it. I floated squares of toilet paper in the toilet and had he do "target practice" and if he hit the target then he would get an M&M. He thought it was cool and it worked. Another thing I tried, a kitchen egg timer. I set it for 1-1/2 hour and whether he had to go or not, we went. This got him used to going and helped him to remember. One very important thing to remember, do not punish him or make the child feel bad about not going in his underwear this will make him feel worse and make it harder. Instead, over praise him when he does it right. Also, my son really wanted the cool underwent (this was 20 years ago) like Heman and ninja turtles instead of the white cotton kind. So I told him he had to earn them by showing me that he was trying and eventually he got the kind of underwear he wanted. Just some thoughts. Just do not make this a big deal, because in reality it is not. He could live to be 80 years old, so just let him take his time. He will get it. Just make it fun and as stress free as possible and you will see resutls.

Hi there! I went through the same thing with my son a few monthes ago. He is the same age and the situation you described was identical to my son's. Okay here is what worked form me. I basically decided no more diapers or pull ups. My son would beg for them when we went to the store...I was firm in saying no. Then I started insisting that he wears underwear at all times. When he soiled them we changed them. Finally I think he realized that I was not going to give in and after about the second day of constantly being pulled away from whatever he was playing with to change his underwear he started to soil them less and use the toilet more. Honestly, I would sometimes wait if his favorite show was coming on or something to change him then...that way he was inconvenienced also. I would tell him during his protest that when he goes in the toilet that we won't have to change his underwear during Blues Clues. It progressively got better and was remedied within about 2 weeks. However, I was probably more busy washing undies than I have ever been...but it was worth it. I hope so much this will help. Good luck!

new to this board, just had to weigh in on the potty training issues. Lots of great advice here in terms of being patient, supportive, encouraging....want to add my personal experience as mom of 5, including a set of boy/girl twins. My oldest DS, 18, did not train till almost 4. This despite being in COTTON diapers, not pullups. Hey, stuff happens. My oldest DD, 16, trained herself at 2, kept herself clean/dry during the day for more than 3 months. Did such a good job that she got a UTI, and lost control, so frightened by this experience that she went back into diapers for another 9 months! Finally "clicked" at 3+. The twins, well, now you can see the differences between boys and girls, but SHE encouraged him (I have a great pic of the 2 of them sitting on the toilet, one behind the other, like they were riding a horse!) They were consistently clean/dry at 3. Toilet training is a process, I talk about body parts, body functions, things like up, down, clean, dry, wipe, flush....vocabulary and lots of demonstration (what's privacy?). My youngest DD, 4 the end of November, just trained in February. Yes, 4+. YIKES!!! the problem? My teenagers! they were way too interested in "helping" me parent her, and were way too heavy handed. Gave her something to rebel against. So she took control and decided NOT to do her business in the toilet! She was also more than a bit phobic about the whole bathroom business, must be a very big deal if EVERYONE in the house is so so so very interested in what was going on inside her diaper. My attitude was leave it alone, it will happen (so nice to have perspective that experience brings). We had to tone things waaaayyyyyy doooooownnn in order to get her to "chill" about this whole thing. At 3-1/2, I "encouraged" her a bit more...I put her diapers/pull-ups near the bathroom door, along with a big supply of underwear, lots of pretty underwear. Also a trash can. I told her, you change when you are wet, I am out of a job! She had to choose each time, diaper or panties. She consistently chose diapers, and changed, and put the wet diaper in the trash. I still had to change dirty diapers, but figured that even with trained kids, mom is still responsible to make sure that "clean-up" is done satisfactorily. At 3-3/4, I started having DD sit on the toilet in a diaper when she had to do #2, then I handled the clean-up. One day, at 4+, it just "clicked" and she did #2 WITHOUT the diaper.....and the rest is history. Toilet training is a process, she had to learn how to control #1 and #2, in the house, use a toilet OUTside the house (don't you just love using the bathroom at the supermarket, at the mall, here, there, everywhere?) and then night-time training. BUT because this one was so OLD, all these pieces fell into place within 2 weeks!!! Clean/dry both day and night! Lots of patience, matter of fact praise (hey, no one claps/sings, gives stickers, candies, etc when Mom uses the potty!). This too shall pass. In my experience, it seems that the bigger the deal is made out of this, the longer the process takes.
I saw this happen in MQ office while training. Supervisor was supposed to be training but
account was behind so she did transcription while she collected salary for "training" me. Of course I asked others for guidance rather than bother the furiously typing supervisor. I don't know if she cherry picked but she definitely double dipped into the MQ payroll.

I don't know if you are already doing this or not, but the best thing I have found to potty train my kids is.....stop buying diapers/pull-ups. If you run out and you don't buy anymore then you really don't have a choice but to be consistent. Having nine pair of underwear on hand is what is recommended.
You can by the the toilet targets online for 5.95. They ARE helpful in making it a game. I always used the whole "Daddy is a big boy, don't you want to be like Daddy?" (works sometimes)
Make it a routine. Go every so often (timer), use the bathroom, flush the toilet, shut the lid, wash your hands, turn the light off, get your reward. Be consistent.
I have four girls and only one boy and my girls were trained by 2 years old with EASE - boys are much more difficult, mine anyway.
It's headed for the potty if anyone accepts rates like this. By saying NO sm
you make a statement and all those who say NO stand up for their rights of earning a decent wage.
3-1/2-year old still not completely potty trained...help
My son is 3-1/2-years-old and is not potty trained. Actually most of the time if we put underwear on him he will forget and use the bathroom in them like he does in his pull-ups BUT if he goes without any underwear or pull-ups he will go to the potty. Any clues? Bigger diapers are expensive and I really feel like he is lagging in this area. Thanks!!!!
I was soooo lucky... my son was potty trained at 2..
He had his 2nd birthday party on Saturday, and on Monday he started potty training. Never bought another diaper. Two weeks later, he was in underwear during the day. But, I took him regularly and monitored his juice intake. Thirty minutes after dinner was the last full drink. He would go potty right before bedtime at 8pm and maybe get a little juice if he asked for it. Since I worked nights, I would wake him up (or just take him sleep) to the bathroom at around 12am or 12:30am. He would wake up dry most mornings, but he wore Pull-Ups until he was about 2-1/2. He is 7 now and has an accident every blue moon, mainly because he falls asleep in bed without going to the bathroom right before getting in bed. Proud of him. Yours will get there too.

honestly, I am in nursing school and have lots of health care experience as a paramedic and medical assistant. I think you can relax and leave your family's health either in your mother's hands or their physician's...

Thanks for the walk down memory lane! I once knew a senior MT who originally worked off of WAX CYLINDERS ("by 1902 the brown wax cylinder was eclipsed by the molded black wax cylinder. A typical recording on a black wax cylinder was about 2 minutes.") At the end of her shift, part of her job was to scrape the cylinders clean for the next day's recording! I started out on noncorrecting IBM Selectrics and reel-to-reel tapes...then correcting Selectrics, but we had to make multiple copies with carbon paper and blue, pink, yellow, goldenrod, and white correction fluids...then the 1-line display Olivetti...then the Wang, Raytheon and Xerox behemoths. Also, I still have my original 1973 Sloane's Medical Word Book Now I use a highspeed internet home-based LAN with VOIP and a KVM switch...guess the only thing that hasn't evolved is the quality of dictation! Kudos to all of you MTs out there from this 30+ year veteran. We've come a long way baby!

Do you do radiology with a lot of canned reports? I do acute care, have been in this business for 30 years, have 4000 entries in my text expander, and a good day for me is 1300 lines. My fingers never leave the keyboard. I see posts from people like on this board and I wonder what planet you are on.
In the old days when we used DOS, I routinely did 2000 to 2200 lines, but with Windows, I have never been able to get beyond about 1400 lines.

I too am an old dog and got very tired of clients, especially hospitals, sending me their very worst, bottom of the barrel dictators, just because I got every word. They always dumped their pail on me as far as sending me the worst of the worst, the same with a service I worked for. Their excuse was "you're the best and you're the only one who can do them, so that's why we need you." Tired of that old line, but not much you can do other then complain in a nice way that you need a "mix" to keep your sanity. I used to get heartburn and headaches just thinking about how they could be so cruel. We also have a breaking point and a little break in between these guys and girls sure would be appreciated. Know how you feel, it's not fair.

Well it is about time for me to come into the digital world. I have ordered my foot pedal and going to try and get my accounts digital -- plus am picking up an overflow account that I need it for. Anyway one major question and bear with this old, old tape user MT. If they send me a voice file either attached or through an FTP and I download it, can I then also forward it onto one of my subs -- in other words is it like my chart notes files where I have the original and only a copy is sent to my subs or when you attach a picture you still have it on your computer. My reasoning/question is because if I need to check over a dictation after they have completed it, I will have a copy on my computer. Or can they go thorugh the FTP site, download the voice file also? Thanks for all your help. Like I said -- old dog new tricks.

The trick is sit down and type. I use ShortHand as an expander. The hospital account that I type for and make 11 cpl requires 1000 lines a day....I do this in about 4 hours, 5 tops. That is roughly 250 lines an hour and in 4 hours I've made 110.00. Then I work on my other account that pays me 10 cpl for about 2 hours which is another 50-60.00. Then I wrap up my day with an hour or so doing clean-up on the account that pays me 9 cpl. There is no magic to it or tricks. I might mention this is all straight typing as none of my accouts have gone to editing, even though one is going to in the next month or so and at that time for the editing part I will receive 4.5 cpl. The money is out there, you just have to work. No one is going to pay you to sit in your seat and surf the net all day. A friend of mine works on the same hospital account that I do and she types 10-12 hours a day and pulls in almost 5000.00 a month. It can be done!

I have seen a LOT of posts on here for people asking how to get their lines. Some are having trouble even hitting lower numbers like 1000-1400. I have been working for a long time on a little book of tips, "Maximizing Line Counts: 30 Tips in 30 Days." I started this at the request of my boss who wanted to give it to all existing employees as well as new hires. I am interested to know if there are any transcriptionists who would like to have something like this.

I've been at this for about 6 mos and have finally gotten to a pretty normal 1100-1200 a day linecount... But would love to increase that and the $$!!
Google Tricks
First of all, if you go into advanced search in Google, it gives you tons of "criteria" you can work with.
The asterisk "*" is the wildcard. If you were looking for a medication that was 20 mg, you could put * 20 mg into Google and it would start listing all meds that were 20 mg. If you put: No wheezes, rales, or *, Google would give suggestions on what would fit here.
If you are looking for an either or, the OR (capitalized) searches for both. Like "side effects, aspirin OR tylenol" This entry would bring up both.
If you type in "define: words" (two spaces after define) it will list all dictionaries the word is in. Google also has a calculator, does conversions, all kinds of things, just have to look on the Google site.

Where did you learn all these tricks?
I have the program and have really not got into it too much yet, but the manual leaves a lot to be desired. It is very highly recommended so I intend to keep on trying. I bought it about a year and a half ago, and admit I finally gave up and put it on the back burner, but I really want to learn how to use it. I will add, though, that I have had a lot of trouble learning the tricks with Word, since I am on my own and having to teach myself.

ok...so create autocorrect forced entries for words that often trip you up; if 'does' vs. 'dose' is a common error, create "doz" for dose and "duz" for does (or something that works for you). one of my common errors is 'doe shave' for 'does have'; so I created autocorrect 'doe shave' to be autoreplaced with 'does have'; i also created autocorrect 'dzhv' and retrain myself to use it. make sense? another proofing trick i use is to change the VIEW of a document during proofing; it's *amazing* how formatting and text errors "pop" when i switch from 'normal' to 'print' or 'outline' view...i catch things i would have missed had i not changed the screenshot. you can also use search&replace for common format/text errors; you just have to develop the habit of SAVE, SPELLCHECK, SAVE, CHANGE VIEW, PROOF, SEARCH/REPLACE, SAVE, COUNT, CREATE AUTOTEXT NORMAL (IF DESIRED), SAVE, EXIT, ADD COMMENTS, SIGNOFF...i think you'll see your QA improve =)
My tricks - sorry long post
I'm not an expert but this has worked for me.
Since I am the primary breadwinner of the household, I made the whole family a part of the budget process. We have two kids left at home (2 grown and gone) and I still manage to pay them their allowance (10.00 per week each).
How about we start there. I have a Chore Chart on a dry erase board on the fridge (so they see it every single time they hit the fridge) with the name of the chore written in permanent marker so they can't erase it, then put the initial of the one responsible for that chore that day. If, at the end of the day, those chores are NOT done? They get a black X in the box next to the chore. Only their initials are written in dry erase so I can change that around from time to time.
If they miss doing their chores 2 days out of the week, they get NO allowance. If they argue or procrastinate, that gets 1 check. If they get 2 checks by the chore, then that is the same as not doing the chore and they don't get the credit for it. Even if they eventually get it done, they still don't get credit that day because they procrastinated OR argued about it. Pay day is Friday.
Time is money people and I don't have the time to clean as I should, they are old enough, and they want money too. I don't give money for movies, candy, or trips to the dollar store. They now have their own and are learning to budget.
Sometimes I give them bonuses too for doing an inventory of the freezer, pantry, organizing the cupboards, etc... Helps us keep track of the things we have for the next step.
MENUS ~ If you get Woman's Day Magazine or First, or anything like them that have the monthly menu calendars in them? PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THEM. They can save you BIG $$ on your food bills.
My kids are horribly picky eaters and meal planning has saved me a lot of money. I now have them sit down with me, look over these meal planning calendars and see if it is something they would like. If they put it on OUR calendar, they initial it, and we make our grocery list. If the time comes for a particular meal and they turn their nose up at it, I send them to the calendar to see if they initialed that day. If they did.... Eat it! PERIOD. (by the way, I never put anything on the calendar that they don't agree with so, after a few months of doing this, there is never any more turning the nose up at dinner time - HA fixed their wagon!)
We also do a mass cook and freeze fest now and then. The kids get into it too. Very easy for them. THey are 12 and 13 so I have the meal calendar taped to the inside door of the pantry. When I'm working, they can go look and see what's on the calendar for that day, pull it out of the freezer, and put it in the oven. I have written the temp and time for each one next to the item on the calendar. Works out fine.
Power bills... Yikes - LIGHTS OUT. When I go to bed, every light in the house is OFF except the porch light, the little light above the stove, and the nightlight in the hall across from the kids rooms.
GAS- Holy Smokes. Up to 2.79/gal here now. No extra drives to here and there for anything. If you just want a cold pop to drink cuz it's hot? Make iced tea instead. Not worth that kinda money for a wasted trip to the mini mart. Just plan better the next time. The kids want to go to the pool or their friend's house... pump up the bike tire kids and grab the walkies. I make my kids take walkie talkies (Cobra brand 5-mile radius at WalMart for 80.00 and WELL worth it.)
One last little tidbit.... SAVE your receipts for EVERYTHING for at least 2 months then compare them after the end of that 2 months when you have learned to tighten up the wallet a bit and see the difference for yourself. Makes it really worth your while.
I have cut enough fat out of excess spending in the past year to put away 400.00 or more every month into a savings account that I can use for emergencies, vacations, whatever.
By the way... Would be a good idea to have a forum JUST for Budgeting and Money Saving ideas here wouldn't it. Administrators???? How about it?

Awhile back longtime MT offered to share tips to anyone who e-mailed him/her. Has anyone heard from him/her on this as I have not. I've tried a couple times to contact him/her but have not received an answer or the tips, so I was curious if I was the only one who had not. I really was interested.

I have applied for so many at home jobs and have done endless testing (some very lengthy) and have not yet received any feedback from any of these companies and then they have more ads out for transcriptionists. I have 30 years' experience and have taught med term and medical transcription at the local college for 20+ years. What gives?

Anyone willing to share Emdat Inscribe tips/tricks?
I recently started working on the Emdate Inscribe platform. It is a little more cumbersome to maneuver than what I am used to, and I was wondering if any of you seasoned Emdat MTs might share any tips or tricks you've found to speed yourself up using this system? I've had a couple "glitches" with the function to look up/paste doctor names, for example, and not being able to close out the "prior transcriptions" box because there's no X! Not too much help from the MT company so thought I'd try here - any tips will be greatly appreciated, or if you know of any websites or other resources. You can respond here or to my email and thank you in advance!

Every company is different -- I worked FT for one as an employee but worked a split shift - sm
So I never took breaks. I would work 5 hours, break for about 4 hours then do another 3. Another company I worked for did not care what hours you worked (IC) but wanted a min. amount of work each day, 500 for PT and 1000 for FT-- BUT they paid you by how many lines an hour you put out, the higher the lph the higher up the scale you made per line in pay; they have since changed everyone to a flat rate with incentive. But bottom line, if you are an IC it does not matter what hours you work, though many ask for a schedule and ask you to stick to it, they just want you to meet line requirements daily, i.e. 1000 per day, 1200 per day, whatever it is.
I got up early, worked during naps, and worked when DH got home.
You have to be disciplined to make yourself work when baby is napping instead of maybe watching TV or doing housework, etc.
I might also go the route of having a teen come into your home, or either trying a mother's morning out program at a local church/daycare. I've been home since my youngest was born and he has never been in all-day daycare, but I did have him in a mother's morning out program 15 hours a week at a local church. It didn't help a lot with my work schedule because I had an older son in school and was a room mom and tutored other kids, but that might be an option. The only problem with the mother's morning out program is they are around other kids and tend to pick up every germ. I finally took my DS out of the program because he stayed sick. You were supposed to keep them off if they had green nasal discharge and I did, but no one else did. Every time I got him well after 2 to 3 days back he would be sick again. Other than that it was very good for him because he would not have had a chance to be around kids his age otherwise.
I just went through training and they
told me that MQ itself does not pay for spaces. I was trained on DQS and again it was told to me during training when I asked about that and the answer was, "No, DQS does not count spaces as MQ does not pay spaces."
?? I'm all confused now.

To tell you the truth, and I'm not dissing the trainers, but I really would be sure they are passing on correct information by asking your transcription supervisor.
When I was trained, they told us to disable some of the features of the platform, like the capitalization after the period and the thing that corrects your text if you type 2 capped letters. These are probably some of the best features of the program and I, nor any MT who wants to produce as much as possible, would dream of disabling them.
So... I really wouldn't put a whole lot of stock into somme of the info they give out. To be sure, get a second opinion. :)
You will need a LOT more training
than you have to be a successful transcriptionist, or even a mediocre transcriptionist. Simply from reading your post, it is apparent that English is probably not your first language. You will need to improve your English-language skills considerably before you will be employable. On the basis of your post alone, I would not hire you. I would not even bother to test you since you have so little training and your English is so poor. You need to take a GOOD transcription course, not something offered by one of the matchbook-cover schoools and certainly much more than you already have taken. Self confidence is all very well and good, but simply believing you can do something is not an acceptable substitute for good training. You do not yet have the skills you need. It is, of course, unlikely that you are going to believe any of this, so to satisfy your own curiosity, just start submitting applications to transcription companies. One or two might let you take their test. Your results should be an indicatino of just how far you have yet to go to be properly trained. Good luck to you.

I had on the job training. I trained for about a year. I am very lucky that I have a family member who is in the business who was willing to train me. She actually talked me into it. I have now been working for seven years as an MT for her and another company.
My DH is in training for this job.

Just another word of advice from somebody who has been there many, many years ago. Please remember that you send mixed messages when you switch back and forth from underwear to diapers. This confuses them. I did what this other poster did -- make it a game, praise, praise, and more praise. In the end, he will get the idea. It does take perserverance on your part. Set that timer and then have a race to the potty. The winner gets to use the potty -- and we all know mommy never wins this race. Good luck -- he will be fine.
Training at MT
So how do you know when you've received proper training? I have finished a program with a local college but when you compare the training hours versus other colleges its way lower? How can I be assured that I am trained enough to be able to do a MT job? Any suggestions????

That sounds wonderful. However, this sounds like something that the doctor would set up on his own. I am looking mainly for something I install on my end, train, edit, etc. from here. I have a small account with three people, and maybe a couple more coming. They would not want to be bothered with doing anything different on their end. I wanted it for my end to speed things up for as they expand so I can keep up.
But are you in training?
I notice the first poster spelled clarity as "clearity".... A very easy third grade spelling word. Are you coming to the job with experience of any kind or do they know ahead of time that they are training from scratch? Are the editors paid well?
Because training an inexperienced person takes a lot of time and sometimes it's not successful.
BOS training
About the BOS AAMT guidelines. I am relatively a newbie with 11 months experience. When I started with my first job and I had been trained like you said to strictly follow AAMT guidelines. But when I got a job oh was I in for an awakening. They wanted things done the way they had always been done and didnt go strictly by AAMT. The acute care account I do now is the same way. I have been penalized for doing things according to AAMT. But every company and client has their way they want things done and you have to learn to follow them. Little things like AAMT second edition says only use disk now do not use disc anymore. Well I got penalized for that. They want disc used when referring to the spinal cord no matter what AAMT says because that is the way they have always done it. That is just one example. But yes knowing AAMT guidelines is good but it doesn't always give a newbie the advantage.
As far as training, you get what you pay for.

Just to let you know - they will take you off of training before the two weeks is up if you don't need it anymore. Mine only lasted three days but I had overlapped training with my last two weeks at MQ, so when they told me I was off training early I told them I had to finish up my last two weeks at MQ and I could only give them 200 lines a day for the rest of the two-week period since I had made arrangements around the two-week training assumption. They were fine with that.

I have been doing transcription for 9 years now and am not making the lines or money I need to. Anyway, there is a local school I was thinking about going to that trains in coding/billing and they have placement assistance afterwards. I have heard it is next to impossible to get hired without already having experience in billing/coding. They do have federal loans/grants to help you pay for the training, but the costs is 7,600; seems awful high to me, but if they can get me a job paying better than transcription, might be worth it? Then again, I was thinking about just trying to get a job in medical records at a local hospital going in as a medical records tech. I know I must sound crazy, just trying to figure out how I can bring more money into my house. Thank you for any advice you can give me.
