Pay

cai did a fantastic job of laying out the different possibilities for line rate versus hourly rate.
That said, I think you also need to remember all the "fantastic" benefits you mentioned. Most companies you work for as an IC offer little/no benefits. If health insurance and paid time off is important to you, you need to "add" that into your hourly wage. And lets not forget your "great" boss. That is very important also. It can make the difference between a fun job and just a job.
I've also read where companies pay very low for VR and since that is 3/4 of you day, you could find your take home pay even lower if you were to have the same ratio with a company that pays by the line.
I too get paid by the hour. I know I can make more $$$ being paid by the line, I can do 200 lines an hour once I get accustomed to the account I'm on, but things like health insurance and paid vacation are very important to me. Not to mention no nights, split shifts and no weekends.
I guess it comes down to what you want/need most $$$, benefits and being happy with your current company.
