POLL: board games vs online games

Do you prefer online games or board games? What are some of your favorites? I just learned how to play Pokeno--it was fun. I love Scrabble, Boggle, Bingo and UNO too. Word games are usually fun online too. Netives has a marbles game that is sooooo addictive. Just mindless passing away of the time......a little downtime is good now and then though.

games
I play a "speed" game. I type as much as I can for 10 minutes, then I will go back and proof for about one minute, speed type for another 10, etc. I stop at least every hour for and make a bed, pick up around the house etc. Sometimes I take a break out on the patio with a tall iced tea or sometimes I take an exercise break. I simply cannot sit for eight hours straight. It is all I can do to sit for one hour!
games..
in my friends baby shower, we have to guess how many jelly beans was in the baby bottle. then we have to guess also, using a roll of bathroom tissue, how big her tummy is.
games
Divide them in two teams. Give them each a straw and marshmellow. Have them blow the marshmellow across the floor using the straw and do it like a race. We laughed so hard when we did it in my son's class. We used holiday marshmellows to tie it in with the holiday
However.....it's not always fun and games....sm
on these boards - be watchful and careful....many trolls exist here.....*lol*
Skip the games but here's an idea sm
My friend had a baby shower. The invite asked everyone to bring a pack of diapers to be entered in a $40 gift certificate for Applebees. She left with a HUGE bag filled with diapers. That was the game if you want to call it a game.
Internet transcription games
I'm looking for the game sites on the internet for medical transcription. I work in a hospital setting and when we don't have work, we are allowed to do crosswords, etc. on the internet. I know of the medword site - are there any other fun sites that anyone knows about that could be considered "educational" in the transcription field?
Games companies play
I live in a suburban area. You would think there would be no problem getting any kind of Internet service. Other parts of my town have DSL, but not the part south of a main road where I live. The phone company is embroiled in a dispute with the state's commerce commission about how much they can charge. The law says they have to let competitors use their lines, but they claim that can't charge the competitors enough to make it worth their while; therefore, they just won't add anymore DSL until they can charge what they want. They advertise their DSL like crazy, though. When you try to actually order it, however, it's not available in your area. Lucky for me, the cable company put in high-speed Internet or I'd be out of a job. Dial-up just wouldn't work anymore for Medquist's platform.
If a part of your town has service like mine does (just not your part), city hall should have someone who handles the franchise. If so, try complaining to them.
Games MTs play to stay in that chair
Hi people :)
When MT gets very boring (which is most days for me), I have a few things I'll do to keep producing. Will you please share any games you play with yourself to crank out some extra lines (something more than "I need to meet the bills, and that keeps me in the chair").
Here's mine. I hope these will help. Please share yours!
- Try to get the % keystrokes saved in Shorthand higher than the last time I worked.
- Keep a timer with me - transcribe 20 minutes, clean home for 10, transcribe 20, clean for 10. Not a very productive way, but I use this when I am truly climbing the walls and nothing else works. Sometimes if I'm on a roll and the 20 minutes are up, I'll just hit the timer again and go for another 20 before the cleaning break. The break gets my house in order (amazing what can be done in 10 minutes - folded laundry and dishes running and so on), gives my wrists a break, gets the blood flowing.
- I find the times I have the worst trouble sitting there and working are the times when it's been a while since I've been out of the house. Getting out regularly helps working go much easier.
- Sometimes set a goal of a specific amount 300 lines or whatever is a slight stretch but can possibly be reached in an hour, and aim for that.
- A walk to the mailbox or other light exercise can help.
- I haven't tried a regular exercise break in the middle of the day (say a 1-hour break to reenergize and really get a good workout in), but if that helps you I hope you'll share.
- Try to get to half of my line count by noon.
- Get done for the day in time to watch Dr. Phil as a reward. :)

No, I don't worry about stuff like that, as I said "mind games" - sm
They pull "your parents don't want you to see us" crap, trying to play the kids off of us and guilt us into caving in, and they put the kids down saying they can't do something because they are too tall, too short, too thin, etc. A person can do just about anything they put their mind to if they have determination. My one daughter, who used to love ballet, no longer wants to do it because grandpa told her she was too tall to be a ballerina (she is in 95th percentile for her age in height and weight, very tall and thin for a 7-y/o), which is a load of crap. So its little things like this that affect how they feel about themselves which I will not tolerate. They are the master of putdowns, I can see correcting a child if they are doing something incorrectly/wrong, but its how you do it...you don't tell the kid they are stupid or an idiot because they made a mistake or have a dream. My husband grew up with this pounded into him and does not want the same thing inflicted on his kids, hence the moderation in exposure to his parents...they know this but still they do it and still they nag to have the kids. He's has, in the past, told them pointblank that they will never get the kids, but its like talking to a wall. So I am not a neurotic worrying about too much playtime or staying up an hour late, etc. Just don't want any more emotional harm done.
I love baby shower games.
You can make a diaper out of a paper napkin. Whoever gets the "dirty" diaper (with peanut butter in it) wins a prize. Taste the baby food contest where everyone gets a dollop of several kinds of baby food on a paper plate, and you have to guess what's what. Pick the baby safety pins out of a bowl of rice blindfolded. Scoop the cotton balls off the floor into a bowl blindfolded with a spatula. The memory game where you look at a tray full of baby items for one minute, then write down as many as you can remember. All of the baby items go to the Mom-to-be at the end of the game. You can find cute little prizes at the dollar store.
The other poster is right. There are tons of baby shower websites out there to snag ideas from Have fun with it!

Games like that are why I decline invitations to baby showers. nm

Skip the games - focus on the mom-to-be. I HATE going to those showers. nm

I found one site that had a picture but it's not his car. There are a couple of other games sm
there, though. It's www.gordononline.com/kids/kids.html. There's one picture to color but it's a sprint car. I hope this helps a little. I'm a Jeff Gordon fan, too.
My kids play in a church basketball league and I am going to watch their games today.
I am going to whip up a fabulous dinner (have no idea what though) and watch a movie later tonight with the family. Church tomorrow!
Would love to make time for an eyebrow wax and pedicure in there somewhere just to spoil myself a little bit - probably not going to happen though!
Bare Minerals IS available at ULTA online,Sephora online...(sm)
...and you don't have to sign up for a makeup "club," or anything. I totally agree with you that this makeup is great for all the basic purposes (coverage, lasting), but their slogan is "Makeup so healthy you can sleep in it." There is a delay in time between when you can apply your powder after moisturizer, but it is really worth it.
To go with your powder I recommend the "pump brush" offered at some of the cosmetic online stores. You fill the handle with your powder mixture (I mix two different powders, changing it up or down according to how much sun I've been getting) and the pump brush will distribute some to the bristles, tap and have at it! This is great for carrying it with you to minimize the loss into the lining of your handbag!
I cannot recommend Bare Minerals enough. I used to be a MAC convert, and have tried everything from Chanel to Maybelline--this product does not disappoint.
POLL
Ok, we know what we are unhappy about in this business. LET'S TAKE A POLL. In 4 lines or less, what would be your ideal Transcriptionist job? No flames please. Just list the important factors that would make you want to go to bat for a company. Include pay plan also. Thanks.
re:poll
Consistent, steady amount of work on the same one or two accounts, you know, the ones you know so well you can do them in your sleep?
Pay that makes you feel like getting up and hitting the keys each day.
For at home MT's, at least some feedback from office ie: what's going on, who's new/old etc, instead of calling in, asking for someone only to find out they jumped ship....ooops, I've run over my line allotment
Poll
1. To be treated with RESPECT and shown appreciation.
2. To work 1 account with less than 500 ESL doctors in order to have some consistency and become familiar with your doctors and then maybe be able to achieve your line count.
3. To be paid for your actual lines typed and not what they think you should be paid for.
4. To be informed of what is going on in the company by your supervisor or other higher up and not have to come to this board for information.
POLL
Curious as to what many of my fellow old-timers in this field may be telling the newbies and/or wannabies coming into this profession. Personally, I'm getting out. Too much disrespect and flat out ingratitude by the doctors and allied health care professionals alike. I worked so hard to get where I'm at, and have precious little to show for it.
Therefore, I discourage new people from entering this profession. STRONGLY! What do you say on the matter? Answer: (Your letter is enough on the reply.)
A. I strongly discourage newbies entering the field.
B. I somewhat discourage newbies entering the field.
C. I have no opinion. Too tired.
D. I say go for it, but feel sorry them.
E. I highly encourage them. Things will be well for them, and different but good.
Opinions, anyone?
That has nothing to do with the poll.
It wasn't meant to be democrat against republican or liberal against conservative. It was only a question to see what people would rather see their tax dollars spent on. Both parties pay taxes. I'm just curious as to what means more to people....taking care of those in poverty whether by their own choice or not OR taking care of those who are already wealthy and paying for things that we could not afford to have for ourselves like million-dollar pensions.
POLL - sm
Can anyone else not type well if their nails are long? I have to keep mine trimmed short....anyone else type better like this or does it not matter how long they are? Just curious if it's just me.

What would you go into if you left the MT field with this being your only skill, in your late to early 40s, and having a high school diploma?
poll
I really would like to know. I dont want to do this anymore.

I think you youngsters should go for your dreams, and do it now. I have been MTing for many years and my arms hurt so bad. I am tired of being jerked around, making less and less money. I'm an exM*er (you-know-who) - pretty much says it all. I now do VR for half the money. Been through court reporting school and even took flight lessons long ago (flying was just for fun - eh, don't care much for the justice system). Now going into coding. Can't wait to say goodbye to the MT business.
Poll
I went to court reporting school many years ago. My husband (at that time) paid for it. He also put me through flight school. Like I said, I do VR editing for half. I have no money. Just to be able to pay for coding school (I intend to go to Andrews), will be a struggle. No fun, but this is my reality. What to do? Suck it up and move on!
let's take a poll
I am ticked about something that I probably should just forget about and count my blessings. I work at home usually until about 5 or 5:30 pm. My husband comes home from work at 4 pm. He does not even say hello or give me a peck on the cheek let alone a hello smack on the lips. He thinks I should get up out of my chair and quick working for a little bit if I want attention. Anyone else in this same boat?
Poll
Why not compromise? He speaks when he comes in. You stop for 2 (TWO) minutes to respond and then get back to work. Both happy!

commercial where the woman was cleaning her kitchen with chicken leg, I have switched to using a dishcloth instead of a sponge. That was the most disgusting commercial .... Anyway, what to you all use? Cloth or sponge, or other? Just curious, as it takes time to get use to using something other than a sponge.

Psychiatry is easy - ophthalmology, denistry and vet - hardest.
poll
Easiest: ER and psychiatry.
Hardest: Cardiology and anything by a mumbler or an individual with a REALLY HEAVY accent.
Poll:
It's whatever you make of it. I've known women who thought it was slavery, and ones who thought it was the pinnacle of their job life. It is what you make of it. Intensely personal experience. I've found that people who are true word geeks feel fulfilled by the learning experience. People who do it cuz they HAVE to, generally will hate it no matter what, because then it IS the equivalent of slavery.
POLL: What is your cat/dog's name?
I have 2 dogs, Bandy and Molly, and a cat, Katielynn.

All the posts about proofing as you go versus proofing when you finish got me to thinking. One poster mentioned something about having the TV on while working. I'm guilty of that myself sometimes. I don't usually keep the TV on my entire shift but I like to have it on part of the time. Usually toward the end of my shift I'll turn the TV to make it seem a little less lonely. I work second shift and everyone has gone to bed before I finish work. Sometimes I just like a little background noise. Unfortunately, sometimes something interesting will come on and I stop to turn around and watch.....sometimes too long. That usually only happens when something VERY IMPORTANT is one like American Idol. Eating is another habit I do too often while working. Or throwing in a load of laundry in the washer/dryer. Oh, and cooking. What else do you do while working? I know my wheels are always spinning about what else I need to be doing.....what to have for dinner.....what needs to be done before I go to bed.....what I need to do tomorrow..... Or cooking and talking on the phone, helping with homework, etc., etc. Let's not forget being on MTStars while working. LOL. These days it is hard to do just one thing at at time, isn't it????
ANOTHER POLL
What are your favorite TV shows? Do you have favorites that you will never miss? There are regulars that I tape daily/weekly (unless it is a rerun):
- Young and the Restless
- Bold and the Beautiful
- Grey's Anatomy
- Desperate Housewives
- New Adventures of Old Christine
- American Idol
- ER
- Scrubs
I also have other favorites, but I don't go to the trouble of taping them. Only so many hours in a week! Some of my other favs are the dating shows, Oprah, Tonight Show, Paula Deen, and those entertainments shows like Extra, etc.
POLL
I would have to say this week on this board the word "troll". Seeing that word so many times a day is getting on my nerves more than the posts the "trolls" post. At least what the "troll" is posting is something different to read. Of course, then there are a few other overused words/phrases:
- like
- you know what I'm saying?
- IMO
- cool
- actually
- basically
- brangelina
- jen and ben
- awesome
- most curse words
- to be honest......
- git-er-done (hate that one)
- how's that working for you?

Job poll
Same here. I was comfortable working for a smaller company until they lost the account I was working on. I was there for 2 years and happy for the most part. Since then it has been down hill. I have held a part-time job for the last 6 months and have tried others only to quit after a week or in one case a day. I have been taking a lot of temp jobs. I would love to find one full-time great job again.
Concerning the poll
This may an odd question but who do you work for? The last time I did QA I was paid $15/hr. Took a few years off and now doing MT/Editing work. I need to find a QA job again. Any suggestions?
MT Poll...
How many years have you been an MT, and what's your longest run at the same company....
I've been an MT for 11 years....the past 8 with the same company.
And its gonna kill you to post on the Company board rather than the main board?

cherrypicking co-worker issue (meant to post it on this board instead of MQ board) sm...
I need opinions please...I work on a very small account with just a handful of ladies. Because of the nature of the software (trying not to get too specific here) we can see who is working online and what reports they are working on in real-time...
We have one cherrypicker on the account. Instead of using FIFO method, she retrieves the reports by author ID - usually picking the better dictators of course. She knows I busted her and she did admit to it in on our work e-mail (not too bright) which I am saving just in case she gets out of hand - so far I'm still able to make money since really most of the dictators aren't bad.
But every night it's starting to wear on me since she's screwing up turnaround time. I don't really want to cause a big uproar being that it is such a small account and I need to work with her almost every night usually one on one.
What would you all do? I want to handle this as delicate and professional as possible because we can't really afford to lose anyone on this account. In other words, I refuse to stoop to her level by cherrypicking right back.
My boss has asked me several times why so-and-so does so much more than I do...I just bite my lip at that point but one of these days I think I might explode and just open up a can of worms....
